  • Restored a very rusty cast iron teapot, that I will give back as a present to the lady who I bought it from who is also the 11th subscriber of this channel.

    Very cool, I personally would have seasoned the hole kettle instead of painting it. I a much bigger fan of the seasoned look.

    This is why cast iron is the best. It can almost always be brought back to a completely functional piece.

    I love cast iron. Your patience and thorough efforts cleaning the humidifier were awesome. I definitely would have preferred to keep the original patina, without the paint, so that it could be used again.

    I would have seasoned the whole thing because seasoned metal looks better in my opinion but it looked amazingly done

      @@CoolRestorations You set it on a old wood-burning stove or in front of a fireplace. Fill it with water and the heat of the fire will cause the the water to evaporate and humidify the room. Mainly people who don't want a bunch of electronic stuff use them today or off-grid people. The one on amazon in the link below is really similar to the one you restored.

      Humidifier These are for sitting on your wood stove to keep moisture in the air and they will always rust out. they are not for heating water for consumption- bad bad! you should rename your video.

    Very cool restoration, and I absolutely love the color green you painted it. Now that it's painted though, can it be used? Is it a heat resistant paint?

      Thank you! when I brought it back to original ower I told the husband that I would recomment keeping it just for looks (as a collectible)
      Because Im not sure the paint can take all that heat. When I was buying it, the lady said it reminded her of her grandma❤

    Very nice video, crystal clear on the process which is very nice. If you wanted to keep it the original cast iron finish is there a product you could clear coat it with?

    What did you use inside the spout to get the rust out and to grind it down? (Or did you have to grind it down?)
    I’m trying to do mine - which I unfortunately forgot to season before using the first time (despite the online warnings) - it’s insanely rough on the inside (the finish I mean) and trying to get the rust out of the spout is causing me the most problems… if I can achieve that I can season it properly and start humidifying my place with it on the wood stove.

      Wire wheeling a piece of cast iron is like refinishing a piece of antique furniture. You might personally prefer the new finish, but it is now worthless to collectors. Stripping rust by electrolysis or through weak chemicals is the way to go. Wheeling results in a polished, nonporous surface that seasoning can't adhere to.

    So I have one of these and I love it but, it keeps rusting inside. Do I need to re-season it? Does that prevent it?

      Maybe if you do many layers of seasoning it will rust less. It needs to be taken care of a lot.

      It was my first time, and apperently there are some things that professionalls dont suggest to do. 1. Is to put any paint on. 2. to avoid power tools. This was more of a show case project rather then something that will be used. Thank you, im still learning with every project that I do😊

      All enamel coated cast iron is decor. It's paint in your food and water Everytime. They should never be used for cooking or heating anything. Period

    So i have a cast iron tea pot that got (i guess) seasoned by some chocolaty tea. Now everything I make out of it tastes like chocolate. Is there anyway to 'reset' the teapot? Will that salt and lemon method work for returning my teapot to it's former glory? Thank you

    How did u clean the spout? What kind of paint was that? Did u use it immediatelyy after the seasoning? I found one like you have and just started cleaning it. Not real bad rust. Thanks

    I have the same one but the condition is better. I want to use it for tea. What good is it to paint it and put it on a shelf...can you use it for tea?

    You are a handyman but don’t know Japanese iron pot culture. Only 2 part you need to fix. One is handle, a Japanese iron tea pot handle must standing, the second part is clean inside,you already done it. But never take off antique Japanese iron pot outside cover, it is very special material never come back again.Wash it with tea,it will shining again.Thanks for the video.

      If the Japanese teapot is rusty will tea wash take away the rust? I have an old one, would like to be able to use, not just display.

      @@dogbiscuit1171 Tea helps, but it won't wash away the rust completely. Boiling water several times and vinegar will also help. Until the boiling water no rust appears, no rust taste.

      @@user-kv8oi2hx8x Thank you, will it take off the special coating if ketchup is left on awhile to clean the rust? How about wire brushes, too abrasive? I just saw something about a homemade electrolyte tub hooked up to an old battery charger, worth trying?

    Nice job, but you should not have coated the inside, oxidisation protects the kettle on the inside, so you get all the benefits and none of the rust, Still, a very nice job.

      I suppose what I am trying to ask is what type of attachment did you use on your drill, ie. what kind of grit? Also the spout is the narrow part where the liquid pours out.

    As bad as that looks I’m amazed that the handle didn’t rust out so I know this is stage 😂😂😂

      Handle is most likely nickel plated. The kettle had vinegar inside for long time that I put in it to soften the rust, I definitely over held it.
