NBC Late Night-era Conan always felt to me like it was Smigel’s own show as much as it was Conan’s. Even when he was no longer a regular writer, a lot of the best gags felt like something he wrote.

Robert Smigel should be a big star for his comedic brilliance and wit. It's not like he hasn't had a good career as a writer. I'm sure he's done fine and for all I know he's probaly quite content, but he surely deserves much wider recognition. Another similarly less known but absolutely brilliant comic that I can think of is Josh Robert Thompson who was on the Late Late Show.
The first time I saw Robert in person with his hand up Triumph was as devastating as finding out santa wasn't real. You kinda already know, but breaking the illusion is ruff.

He just never turned it off, even off-camera. Seems like Robert Smigel does the same, and just becomes Triumph. It's an amazing skill!

Triumph has always been my favorite segment of Conan's. He never fails to make me laugh harder than I ever tend to and seeing how much he kept Conan in stitches, it's obvious he's always been the best. I hope I see more of him someday.

OH MY GOD!! It's hysterically funny on so many different levels. When they started doing this on the original show, I just thought it was so stupid. But Robert Smigel manages against all odds to me it great!! I've seen him do it at award shows, in street interviews, on Hollywood Squares, in one on one interviews,.....It always seems to land hard.
