Question for ya i haven't been experiencing the grinding but when im trying to put my 2000 ram 2500 into 4 high the light on the dash flickers is that just the sensor sticking or is there another issue? 4 high dose work but that light makes me think its going to jump out of 4x4
Brother this is the hardest site for sure to order parts from can't never find the parts that I'm looking for instance that transfer case locking ring kit I've tried everything to search for it and gives me nothing for that it gives me a freaking locking ring for my ⛽ tank lol bro maybe you are to make video for us on how to order parts brother because I'm telling you this ain't the first time that I tried to order parts from y'all and always get discouraged and end up ordering from Amazon because that's super easy don't understand y A 1auto ain't the same . I've would sure like to get of hold of that locking ring kit because I've got the exact truck you got on your videos that ,96 dodge ram 1500 4x4 ,and I'm trying to up grade it also but again can't get the parts that I need . but I tell you brother your videos are on point I've learned a lot watching your videos especially on my 96 dodge ram 1500 keep up the videos 🙏
2500 second gen PIA noise coming from behind the transfer case to some where in the rear differential. Looked at everything and could find nothing. elevated the truck and ran it up to 30 mph then went to every bearing with a stethoscope no bad bearings. I live in the high desert in the rockies. I had recently replaced the U joint at the differential. 6 months of this is driving me wild. At times the noise would not exist for days. It came I had to replace the carrier bearing. When putting it back together I checked to see if any of the needle bearings had fallen down. What I discovered was that new universal joint was defective from the factory, all of the needles had flat surfaces some where on them. replace that joint again--This cowboy is in love with his pick-up again.
My snap ring came out of the slot on my output shaft (rear). I was able to pull the shaft back and the ring snapped back in and the end play was gone and everything is hunky dory smooth again. This video gave me the starting point, and enabled me to be able to fix my transfer case easily. Thanks a million for the vid.

I let out an audible "whoa!" when you showed that snap-ring upgrade. My plow truck is a 96 too - might just do this in the spring to prevent the problem. Excellent vid.
Thank you for creating this video, I call this, finding the Gremlin. It is to hard to determine if it was coming from the transmission, front axle assembly or gears because once the noise starts and it sounds like gears digging to deep into each other, the noise would go away again until you hit a pothole causing the noise again. I am sure this is my problem especially if you say it happens a lot with this type design. Thanks again.
Do you have the part number for that upgraded ring? I have a 2000 3500 4x4 and the grinding started this morning intermittently so I think the shaft if free floating
My problem is that the transfer case ( 95 manual shift link in floor) grinds if shifted l while running. Kill engine. Shift to neutral and it shifts smooth. Start engine and transfer case is engaged and stays?? Shift link adjustment?? Or synchro prob?? Help?
Any experience with the BW4407 from the mid 90's Ford F250's, F350's? Mine has grinding scraping sound that is intermittent, happens mostly on accel, decel. I've tested every combination of selection (range, mode, with/without driveshaft) and there are only these conditions where I see NO symptoms: 1) 2H, hubs free... 2) Front driveshaft removed.... 3) 4L is perfect. I removed the t-case and disassembled for inspection and found: bronze flake in oil, broken range fork insert, range fork from a BW4406 (not correct part number). I inspected all parts, minimal slack in chain no evidence of rubbing (sprockets are bronze), a little sloppy but undamaged planetary, oil pump good, main bearings all good. Maybe this just all is worn (its a reman unit). Super frustrating, doubt its a pinion issue (diff), that feels fine has normal preload oil is awesome. Ive never been able to determine if the 4406 range fork is acceptable in the 4407. It seems right (?). Reman company must have put it in there. Documents definitely indicate different part numbers for each type of t-case. I never could find a 4407 range fork.
Great vid and thanks. Know my cad vac is no good but thought the noise was transfer case. Will tidy that up. That silver soup just inspired me to make a sign using magnetic letters. Pour the customers fluid across it and if enough metal is present, the letters of "its hooped" will darken. 😁
I’m getting the same noise here in there on my 2009 F150 four-wheel-drive I thought that sound was coming from my rear but then I got the rear completely done and I’m still getting the same sound
Gentle man you don’t mention any spare parts number or the one you Have upgrade Or even you don’t put a link where to buy this upgrade part from your website or any other website so please please specify next time for the Spare parts with guidance from work to buy thanks again it was a very good video
That broken lock ring and noise from the T- case is a huge red flag ! I would pull that case out and either rebuild it or replace it ! It will most likely fail soon !
Cool. I have 96 dodge ram1500 4x4. I heard some noise from transfer case for two week cuz I wasn’t sure what it was. I check fluid in there and barely have it in so I added to it. Some of it goes away and little smooth but still makes noise. I’m not sure what to do cuz it does leaks.
I have a GM NP241C transfer case it is making a grinding noise at the rear of the case. I took off the cone and the clip is still there in tact and shaft if not loose. Fluid was flushed no metal shavings. Filled it up and still making the grinding noise. Mostly when coasting on the freeway any idea what it may be? Thank you for your time
+Raven Rivera We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
Would this happen in reverse? When I put it in reverse and give it gas it seems to pop out of gear and stay grinding. Is that the same problem? New transmission as well so it's gotta be transfer case I'm guessing
Does this apply to an 02 Silverado Z71 with automatic trans? Mine just left me stuck at a gas station and having to get towed home with a similar issue. It was running fine all day then when I was pulling away from the gas pump, it made a clunk and suddenly started a terrible grinding noise and completely lost power. My heart went up into my throat and several naughty words were verbalized almost as loud as the grinding. I was able to get moving again but it would consistently lose power and start grinding after about 10mph. And grinds immediately when putting it in reverse without even giving it any gas. Sorry about the long comment. I'm just really bummed out and hoping I can save myself a lot of time and money getting my transmission rebuilt or replaced. Please help!!
Help! 1995 dodge 1500. It would crank but not, replaced the rotor started up. Couple of days later it moves 5mph. Thinking cat. converter or transmission. Not sure your thoughts
Hi, I have a very strange situation where only when I slow right down to crawl speed like when stopping at a toll booth I get a very heavy clunking sound and I can feel it through the car but once I start to move again there is no noise or vibration. It is a 2001 Ford explorer Sport Trac 4x4, do you have any ideas on this problem.
Thanks my 95 dodge making this noise and took apart my drive shaft and transfer case line you did and it was broke . Now can’t find the ring . Know we’re I can get one ?
My truck is a 92 k1500. It rides fine in 4wd, but when I go to put it into 2wd it shifts in then around 10-15 seconds later the light comes on as if it’s in 4wd. If I then try to drive it in “2wd” it grinds, but not a steady grind. It speeds up when as the vehicle speeds up. Any possible explanations? I swapped the transmission to a 450 turbo s, if that means anything.
okay ... I am not that smart but where did you describe the part number and name of the 'snap-ring upgrade' you showed in the video. I've got a 99 Dodge and it's making the precise noise yours made before the upgrade. Please .. where can I purchase that snap ring upgrade ??
www.drivetrain.com/parts-catalog/transfer-case-replacements-and-parts/transfer-case-saver is where I finally got the tool shown in the video as a replacement snap-ring substitute.
I'm getting a hard grinding and shaking noise when i installed a new FRONT drive shaft, cause the front was missing on a 2005 ford explorer xlt. What can it be? Any suggestions?
NOT ONE PERSON COMMENTED ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF RUST ON THAT TRUCK, how lazy someone has to be not to keep it clean undercoated and all bolts greased with anti seize grease,,, I even use it on my brake bolts wheels and so on and bolts never got loose
So I’m getting my transfer case replaced the transfer case has 53,000 miles, After replacement will my car mileage change or how would I know that my mechanic put in my transfer case with the 53k miles on it ?
@10:15 All these metal debris that are on the transfer case where are they coming from? Does that determine a problem in the actual transmission? Thank you
I have a 96 z71 with the stick in the floor and it grinds really bad when you try to put it in 4wd or back into 2 wd I usually have to cut the truck off to put it in 4 wd and cut the engine off again to put it back in 2 wd ....would that snap ring have something to do with that too?
I have a chevy 1500 tahoe ls that make a grinding scratching noise only while pulling off from stop after bout 2 or three times of doing it it goes completely away dose this aplly to chevy also?
Hi ,I have a 2015 cheverlet silverado Lt 4x4 and it also makes that grinding noise but it also goes out too every time it starts to grind .there's no drive for about 2 to 3 seconds and it comes right back
Driving a Ford Ranger Sport 2011 4x4. When I put it in 4x4 and drove, the truck jolted at certain speeds. It almost caused me to spin out or fish tail the back end of the truck. I do hear a bit of a grind or hum. Has to be transfer case? Fluid.
+Jason Cherry We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Would like a part number for the upgraded snap ring....your 1A auto store doesn't stock it, you haven't provided info to others requesting the part number. Is it some big government secret or just a bait and switch?
I have a 2000 ram 1500 5.2, 4x4 and have basically rebuilt the front end (some of your parts) including the the steering gear box. I have a lot of slop in the steering. I replaced everything on the engine side pertaining to the steering column . In short i need the cab side steering column. Do you sell this or know of someone that does? Thx for your time
+Ronin Thanks for checking us out! We do not currently offer the steering column for this application. You may want to search further on Parts Geek or eBay, thank you!
Question: faulty transfer case may cause no reverse working on 2 wheel drive ?? I have a expedition and runs good forward but reverse not good and it's wet of oil
Would this only happen at WOT and hear changing by chance. My 21 Rebel makes this sound when I do an ice WOT sounds like it’s breaking through 5 then dot. Hear it. Makes the truck embarrassing to drive
I just got a 1989 Chevy k1500, one day I switched it into 4wd and it made a bad deep whining and *THUNK* noise. Now I switched it back to 2wd ever since every time I drive the truck and start to slow down it makes the deep whining noise and *THUNK* and jults the truck forward. Anyone know what’s wrong?
I had a problem in my 2000 ram 1500 when I put it in 4x4 there was moaning sound and it darted from left to right while driving and made a knocking sound and it was scary as heck on icy road so I put it back into 2 wd and it was fine.
It started all of the sudden after driving threw some very deep snow just a day ago. So if the noise only presents itself under load and taking your foot off the pedal the noise stops I should start at the snap ring?
I know that we want it to be at OEMspecs yet what are they for those of us that have a manual that skipped that part... as all Haynes manuals have nothing on transmission or transfer case repair.
Hey nice video, I have a hummer h2 2006 when I accelerate it makes those kkkk grinding noise, would this be the same case? Another question from gear 1 to 2 it slips some time. What would be the problem? Please please advise 🙏 thanks.
+melskullz1 Thanks for checking us out! We do not currently carry the upgraded item but you may be able to locate on eBay searching for a transfer case split ring retainer upgrade kit. Hope this helps you out!
With that being broken would that cause the 4x4 lightt to go off and on in 2wd while driving? I've been hearing that same noise and couldn't quite figure out what was causing it. I replaced the actuator yesterday but still hearing the grinding noise.
Say I didn't catch it and kept driving months and months. Is it possible I come to a stop sign and my truck just locks up. Not roll past a feet in any gears. My truck been in shop over a month now and still no answers! The 1st shop I took it to said it wasn't the case or spider gears so I took it to a 2nd shop that rebuilt my transmission cause I had warranty 5k miles ago. But I haven't heard anything they just keep telling me they don't have time all they know is it won't roll, well that's how it been since I brought it a damn month ago! No way they that busy if they can tow it in a hurry! Idk what to do or say at this point.
+T V Thanks for checking us out! We are sorry to hear that you're having this issue with your vehicle. We would not be able to diagnose this as an issue like this will definitely need the vehicle there to look through everything. It may be best to have another mechanic try to take a look at this.
There is a chain that slings the oil within the case. No pump. That stuff normally won’t move once it’s installed. In you’re worried about it just let it set up overnight before you fill it. It will be good and cured by then.

Do you offer that lock ring for a 1998 suburban transfer case?
I have a 1998 Ram 4x4 laramie. And i searched your site and couldn't find the upgraded snap ring. Any links to it?
+Xamplez.Ke Thanks for checking us out! We currently do not offer this for your vehicle. You may be able to find these locally or further online.
I had a problem in my 2000 ram 1500 when I put it in 4x4 there was moaning sound and it darted from left to right while driving and made a knocking sound and it was scary as heck on icy road so I put it back into 2 wd and it was fine.
I have this same issue but truck doesnt move at all snap ring or is it totally hooped ??
It started all of the sudden after driving threw some very deep snow just a day ago. So if the noise only presents itself under load and taking your foot off the pedal the noise stops I should start at the snap ring?
I have a 1997 Dodge 1500 4x4 and I cannot locate that one part to replace that c-clamp in the transfer case
I know that we want it to be at OEMspecs yet what are they for those of us that have a manual that skipped that part... as all Haynes manuals have nothing on transmission or transfer case repair.
where did you find the upgrade part that you installed??
That's a great thank you
Anytime 👍
Very nice video ,thanks

Will that collar work with 2003 dodge ram 1500
Where can I find this part? I can't find on the website
Is there any video for a 2003 Chevy 2500
I have a 85 k20 suburban with a np208 that's grinds like this in 2wd and 4hi but drives fine in 4lo. Could this possibly be the problem?
What was the problem?
How do you change it on a 2014 GMC that you can't open up this same way
Hey nice video, I have a hummer h2 2006 when I accelerate it makes those kkkk grinding noise, would this be the same case? Another question from gear 1 to 2 it slips some time. What would be the problem? Please please advise 🙏 thanks.

+melskullz1 Thanks for watching. Buy the part in this video on 1AAuto.com: 1aau.to/c/261/a/transfer-case-housing
Can you please tell me the name of that part. Thank you
+melskullz1 Thanks for checking us out!
@@1AAuto I'm gonna wait to hear what the mechanic that the warranty is under says.
Not concerned with that rtv getting into the case and clogging the pump? Heard that’s a common issue among home gamers
There is a chain that slings the oil within the case. No pump. That stuff normally won’t move once it’s installed. In you’re worried about it just let it set up overnight before you fill it. It will be good and cured by then.
It would be nice if you said what the torque weight is as you go.
+Q Allan Thanks for the feedback! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
Could this fixing work on my 2003 Chevy avalanche?
