I love how for the final week, the crew set up the car area with basic treatment to indicate they were moving out. That’s awesome that they showcased their last week by putting the effort into the prizes instead of staging.
When this originally aired on the East Coast, it was preempted by an NBC News special report as John was about to play the bonus game. 35 years later, I finally got to see the final outcome.
Kind of sad to this version of Sale of the Century come to an end. It had a very good run on NBC. (6 1/4 years) Basically, it fell victim to talk shows and syndicated programming. Game shows were going out of vogue fast in the late '80's/early 90's as much as variety shows went out of vogue during the late '70's.
So too did cartoons on Saturday mornings; NBC was the first to wind down on this when the 1991-92 season ended. CBS I believe ended their Saturday morning cartoon block when Garfield & Friends was canceled in 1995, which left ABC as the lone holdover until, finally, The Bugs Bunny & Tweety Show met its demise in 2000.
@@ClassicTVMan1981X Thank God for retro channels such as Get TV, Me TV, and BUZZR that airs classic reruns of cartoons (Me TV), and game shows (BUZZR).
When I first saw Jim say that the Instant BArgain will go on "the next show" to "nothing", I both laughed and cried at the same time. I also think John should have won the car automatically and been allowed to go for the $50,000. Should've ended it BIG.
Many great memories of watching SOTC when I had off from school back in the ‘80’s, as some have said on here, times were changing back then for daytime television as now in the 2020’s, it’s mostly talk shows and reality shows on weekday daytime TV, the only daytime game show now is Price is Right, and not much soap operas anymore either
When Temptation came on in 2007, I really enjoyed that one too as it was the SOTC in the 21st century with a little different twist but only lasted for 2 seasons
Exxon Valdez and its Captain Joseph Hazelwood, Second Mate Lloyd LeCain Jr., and Third Mate Gregory Cousins. There was a lot of blame shifting in that. It was a real mess. Dawn soap would be a benefit of this as they would show that they could use it to dissolve the oil on birds.
@@millenniumman75 it moved to CBS would return to NBC in 91 then was cancelled for good in September of that year. Super Password ended on that day as well and Scrabble would end the following year

So the real reason for Sale of the Century's cancellation isn't because of the Winner's Big Money Game. That's fine. But it was due to the low ratings. Well, I think NBC and Reg Grundy Productions did try their best to boost up the show's ratings.
Because they were playing up the fact that the show was ending and they were using moving supplies as set decor. It's similar to the series finales of many scripted shows where the characters move away and the last scene is often the empty set without furniture or anything.
The final week may soon air on BUZZR. They had an all Sale of the Century Black Friday marathon and all 7 shows of their final undefeated champion Darrell Garrison, which includes the first 3 days of the final week.
There’s always a feeling of enjoyment with Reg Grundy game shows. A strong bond of family between cast and crew. Well done everyone
The big two were $ale and Scrabble...all broadcast in a 10.5 year period.

Must've been hard to do that again, since Jim did that with Card Sharks in '81.
In the same studio as well
BUZZR finally aired this finale on 6/28/2022!
Now they’re replaying the 1988 episodes.
When this originally aired on the East Coast, it was preempted by an NBC News special report as John was about to play the bonus game. 35 years later, I finally got to see the final outcome.
The last shot with Jim and Sean Perry saying goodbye at the end. 🙏🏻
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't forget Jim's wife/Sean's mom, June.
Loved those instant bargain clips.

they should have given John the jeep as a bonus even though it was their final show
So NO ONE is gonna bring up the fact that the champ's name was JOHN RAMBO????
And the final amount won was the same as the scrabble finale: $6,000

Truly a fun show which should never have changed the format of the end game.
im saving this one
Stay tuned for Classic Concentration next on NBC
The Valdez accident!!!!!!!

Buzzr aired this final show where it has the Fremantle “Coffee Shop” logo.
I see "Wheel Of Fortune" on one of the screens on the top right of the control room.
Rolf Benirschke - it would follow suit later in the spring of 1989.

A report on that oil spill cut into the final bonus round and goodbye segment on the East Coast when it orginally aired.
I remember that. I also remember being very pissed.
I also read somewhere that the special report also preempted Game 1 of Classic Concentration. Thank God BUZZR AIRED IT in its entirety.

You could've named the title of this video "sale of the century series finale". Series finale means the ending of the show.
Imagine if the other contestants didn't make it to the bonus round should got the prizes from the shopping spree of SOTC
Next Week To The Last Week Of Card Sharks
On CBS Daytime
This was such a great show, but it was no match I guess in the end going up against “Family Feud” on CBS.
One final balloon drop
I wonder how much money in cash and prizes the Winner's Big Money Game gave away throughout Sale of the Century's entire Winner's Big Money Game era.
Why was this show cancel?
1. Scrabble takes over the 9a time slot and 2. Days of Our Lives gets the morning time slot replacing Super Password to make way for a new daytime drama called Generations as of Monday, March 27, 1989.
SALE OF THE CENTURY and SUPER PASSWORD Were Cancelled, to Make Room for NBC's Newest Soap Opera, GENERATIONS
Late 80s to about 1998, game shows were in massive decline because of talk shows and other competition.
So the real reason for Sale of the Century's cancellation isn't because of the Winner's Big Money Game. That's fine. But it was due to the low ratings. Well, I think NBC and Reg Grundy Productions did try their best to boost up the show's ratings.
@@jerrywright4886 i feel its been done on purpose cause of the president of NBC dont like game show and was desperate to get rid of em
Why did they basically tear the set down already? Seems rushed...
Because they were playing up the fact that the show was ending and they were using moving supplies as set decor. It's similar to the series finales of many scripted shows where the characters move away and the last scene is often the empty set without furniture or anything.
GameTV will air the final show in the future since GameTV now has this show. Too bad, we didn’t have it here in the US, because it’s only in Canada.
Not anytime soon as it began with episode 58 of the synd version
