  • The 15th and final show in my Jim Perry tribute is the final episode of "$ale of the Century" from March 24, 1989. Aside from a few things here and there, Jim pretty much retired from television after this. Overall, a great career for a great man. RIP, Jim.

In the last episode of Sale of the Century when Jim Perry said "in our next show it'll go to nothing for the "Instant Cash", there IS no next show for that because it was the LAST episode of Sale of the Century. Rest in Peace Jim Perry, and live long and prosper.

"$OTC" and "Super Password" were both canceled on the same day. "Card Sharks" was axed a week later on CBS.

This was Summer Bartholomew's last TV appearance, not counting guest appearances on talk shows

Should have brought back Lee Menning and Sally Julian for the finale.

Much of the original airing of the finale was not seen due to an NBC News special report on the Exxon Valdez.

This is why I canned the GSN 3 years ago, I switched from satellite to my cable company Mediacom, 1st time I had Mediacom, they had GSN, and the 2nd time I got Mediacom back (before i got Mediacom back, I had heard they took GSN off) I said to myself, thank God I dont have GSN anymore.

The hosts podium are in different directions, on different game shows. This game show had the podium, on the left side, as well as "The $25,000 Pyramid", "Bumper Stumpers", and "Spinoff".

Bit of trivia... this episode aired two weeks after the final episode of Jim's other long-running game show: Definition, which he hosted for 14 years.

The following week, Frank Jennings was on Card Sharks during the final week (he was one of the ten business executives)

The producer or whoever's in charge of sound effects should have had the sirens (or whatever those winning sounds are) going off for their last goodbye. It would've been fun just for kicks.

I'm somewhat disappointed with the way the show ended. Yeah, there was a Big Money Game win, but I felt they should have had the final episode play for the car since it was never going to be offered again. Also, the final Instant Cash should have been for $5,000 instead of $1,000, probably to entice someone to go for it one more time.

At least they had an ending. Press Your Luck ended their run with no ending (which is a huge insult, IMO.)

It's a crime that this program went off the air. It did lose something perhaps when the end game shopping element went away. It's a shame they couldn't incorporate the winner's big money game into the shopping element for the end game. After 1989, the major network daytime game show genre all but died. Let's Make A Deal and Price is Right on CBS, but they are not the same anymore, way too many commercials :-\

How could they incorporate the winners big money game into the shopping element?

The current credit crunch here is terrible. At least the ones before 2012 was reasonable.

That is a much better quality copy of the final episode. They did the same as "Super Password" which were both series finales. WNBC-TV (channel 4) at the time ran this final episode due to breaking news of an oil spill while interrupting the show.

10:35: The infamous AFL/NFL question! As a matter of fact though, in terms of football, the AFL did merge with the NFL in 1970, four years after the announcement of the merger.

And BTW, I hate the credit crunch that GSN did. Thanks to Buzzr, they showed the same final episode with real credits. Here is what "$ale" should've ended with the real closing credits to the "$ale" finale.
