- I've loved Charles Gerhardt's 1972 recording of Korngold's gorgeous score since I first heard it in the late '70s. Here it is synched to the film for the first time ever!
Musical director: Leo F. Forbstein
Orchestrations: Hugo Friedhofer, Ray Heindorf, and Milan Roder

My favorite Flynn movie. Cinematic perfection from the musical score to the cast to the costumes to the screenplay. Only Olivia de Havilland is missing. However, Brenda Marshall gives an admirable performance. 👍
Papa’s favorite of all time. May his soul rest in peace.
Great movie and a beautiful score by Korngold...absolutely timeless...
YES!
Gerhardts recording of Korngold always seems the best to me
The Elizabeth court procession scene is magnificent. My favorite.
Much faster in the film than on this album! I really had to speed it up.
@@123boink You did a great job with it!
@@johnhannon SoundForge lets you speed up and slow down music quite a bit before problems creep in - it's invaluable in this kind of work.
@@123boink is that a real British royal fanfare or just made for this film?
@@michaelmaxwell1523 I'm sure all the music was written by Korngold.
Adore this movie!
Don’tcha just love a sea adventure… especially with Eroll Flynn as the lead..🙂
Amazingly clean brilliant sound. Superb exciting soundtrack. Thanks for this clip.
Thanks - more to come! Perhaps someday the NY Phil will play this with the film - they're doing "Close Encounters" next week.
Thank you for your reply. Much appreciated.
Thanks , Broadway Classics .I had this vinyl record when it first came out. The music is so Triumphant !!!
Thanks - it was my introduction to Korngold. Be sure and watch Part 3 - the ending REALLY needs the sailors' calls!
Best privateer movie ever made
Superb.

WARNING TO HOLLYWOOD - DO NOT REMAKE OR TOUCH THIS MOVIE. ITS PERFECT
Wonderful! What a great idea!!!
Thanks! Please also listen to Part 3 - I'm very proud of that one.
Dear Mr. Carroll - I’m trying to buy a copy of your book on Korngold and having it shipped to Norway. This however seems difficult, could you perhaps point me in the right direction? I’m currently preparing his third sonata, which is one of many «unsung masterpieces» In his production. Best wishes Christian
@@christiangrvlen7448 Dear Mr Grovlen, I regret very much that my book (in English) is out of print. Second hand copies are offered on Amazon & Alibris at present for about £100. Alternatively, it IS available in German translation on many retail sites including Amazon and even Ebay, and comes from the Austrian publisher Boehlau verlag (Das Letzte Wunderkind). If you read German, this would be the most cost effective option. I am sorry I cannot be more hepful. I am delighted that you are learning his 3rd Sonata, a wonderful work indeed. Thank you for writing.
4:46 Clearly, queens did their own dusting back then.
Good job.
Thanks.
Glorious days of music good scripts even if the books were very different.
And how the men were really full blooded men!
I'm an editor and film maker and wanted to do this for YEARS. I have all the later recordings of Korngold's amazing score. What is your process? Were you able to remove the original music from a Blu-ray rip? Did you just play it over top of the original? Very curious. Great work!
Thanks. I time stretched the original for a perfect match and then played them in synch, favoring the stereo recording. For the court entrance, I had to significantly speed up the Gerhardt recording.
@@123boink When I have time I would like to redo the sound design for one of your scenes since it sounds so small and tinny now next to that big beautiful music. Thanks for making this. : )
@@123boink Yes, I've been doing similar things to match 78rpm recordings to soundtracks of Max Fleischer cartoons that used popular songs. I was able to intermix the two in the process. While most did not need manipulation, my most recent effort required the altering of the pitch and tempo to match the soundtrack. And while it is exciting to hear efforts like this, for my taste much of this modern recording is too harsh, especially with the horns.
@@RayPointerChannel I love it.
Muy buen film, como obtener una copia?
Flynn and Curtiz made a great team.......even if they did butt heads more than a few times.
