I've never done any soldering and I got a cheap $10 dollar soldering kit on Amazon and with the help of this video, I totally fixed my 2004 Corolla clock, thanks so much for the help!
I realize that this is an old video, but I wanted to post this comment for others who may be experiencing this problem. I have a 2005 Corolla CE, and my clock was exhibiting the same behavior. I attempted to perform this repair, but the problem still existed. I noticed that when the weather was cold ( I live in PA), the clock display would work, but as the vehicle interior warmed up, it would go out again. Yesterday, I had the console apart to evict a dead mouse, so I pulled the clock and took it into my shop. I powered the clock from a bench power supply by connecting +12v to pins 1 (B+) and 4 (ACC), and 0V to pin 2 (E) of the 4-pin power connector. I used freeze spray to isolate the faulty component, and I found that diode D1 (located next to the connector; it is connected in series with the ACC pin which enables the display when the car is on) was the culprit. Since I did not have any surface-mount diodes, I replaced it with a 1N4148 diode, and it has been running well since yesterday. I plan to put in back in after I alleviate the putrid odor from the mouse carcass, but I suspect that it will operate correctly from now on. Just food for thought if the above method does not work for you.
Thank you so very much! Just did this myself to a newly acquired 2003 Corolla and... IT WORKED! (Out of curiosity, I asked the parts department at the local Toyota dealer how much a new clock costs... Brace yourself... $510!!!) So grateful to you. - Dave (Jacob's dad)
As for Toyota parts , asked for the price I thought they were reading off the parts' model number.. nope the guy said that was the price I said, thank you, and hung up !
I bought a $12 soldering kit on Amazon, fixed the clock following your video and just saved me the cost of a new clock for my 2004 Toyota Corolla. Thank you!
I was looking for something else and run into this video. I decided to give it a try my clock had not worked for a couple of years, and now I got it back... Thanks for a great video
Excellent video. I did a replacement in 2016 on my 05 Rolla and without a good video I had to consult a shop about how to get the panel piece off. Those top two clips can be a challenge. Plastic pry tools help. That time I sent the clock in to be repaired, ebay $20, but had to wait a couple of weeks to get the return and take it apart again. This time, before I saw your video, I found one already rebuilt on ebay for $30. With your help it was installed in all of 20 minutes. Now I can solder the previous one and have a ready back up. Thanks a lot for a clear and easy to follow video.
I have a 2002 model (seems these were only introduced to US in 2003 but were around for 18 months or so before that) and the clock is still going strong! But I'm well prepared if the worst should happen. Great video, cheers.
Thanks for the video. Fixed my 2006 Corolla clock. The hidden screw under the control knob was key. Toyota likes hidden screws and bolts :) I bought the car new in 2006, it's got about 280000km on it.
You don’t need to add solder you can just apply heat from the iron on the joints. This does work. Takes about twenty minutes to do the whole job start to finish. Great video and info.
Thanks great tutorial. I was able to fix my clock after purchasing a soldering iron in just 20 minutes. Lol, looks like you also broke the top right tab on the center console just like me. Now I don't feel so bad. Glad to see your Corolla is still running. Purchased my 2008 corolla last year used with only 80K miles, hope it also lasts 250k.
Hi guys same issue i encountered,i went to my friend mechanic and ask him about this about, and he said that test if the power connection is working and he test it for me and he said that theres a power to the connection, should i do thesame thing put a little bit soldering lead to that 5 resistors?Coz when i bought this car,i noticed that my clock is not working and i am trying to figure out why,one more thing i went to auto wrecking and found same clock and hook it up but didn’t work i had a feeling that its not working too.
Another great video. I went to the pull a part, got a clock from a newer toyota, paid $4.00 and with you coaching me again it's working again!! Looking forward for more videos!!
Your tutorial is awesome. Detailed explanation. I'm having the same problem and you're right Toyota dealer is asking me to replace the whole clock. I am woman and handy. I think I can do that . Pretty easy. Thank you.
Good video. Remember to plug clock in and test before putting all panels back. I had fixed mine about 7 yrs ago but it went out and had to do it again recently. You can use an ohmmeter to check which resistor is the problem if you reworked all of them and it still doesn't work
Todd, thank you so much for this video. I have the same problem with the clock in my 2005 Corolla. Sometimes the clock works and sometimes it doesn't. I will do as you explained and showed here in this video. I am a pretty good handyman if I do say so myself. Cheers!
Am I the only one here who has a board covered with conformal coating to protect the board. It's not possible to reflow the solder joints unless you first remove the conformal coating.
I know you post this video 7 yrs ago but I was watching you now 08/11/2023 because I need to fix my clock at my 2003 Toyota Corolla and I would like to purchase the same soldering kit you have, I like the handle and the plastic cap in the top of soldering, so please let me know where I can purchase ? Thanks.
Great instructional video. I have the same problem with my clock in a 2006 Toyota Camry, and you have given me the confidence to do this repair myself. Just one one question is it really necessary to disconnect the battery or fuse. Thanks
Just thought to let you know, I have repaired my camry clock and working as good as new. My 2006 model was different in that I only had to remove the air con control trim and the radio trim. The clock unit itself with the speed alarm was different to yours, but very straight forward. Thank you once again.
This method worked for me, clock is working again, unfortunately I broke 1 top clip both bottom clips and broke the whole panel in half trying to get it out, it really didn't wanna come out, but after putting everything back together you can really tell.
I have a 2003 Toyota Carola, and the passenger square is pushed in on the dash under where the stereo is. All I have to do is push it in, but I can't get to it because of the pace plate on the front. Do you have a video on how to get in the back without taking the dash apart? Or any sudgestions please?
@@ToddsGarage I just started doing it and they are tricky to get at. I found out the hard-way thinking they pulled out from the front- they twist and come out from the back. Plus trying to find good LED's for them is hard to do as well.

Hey man, thanks for the tutorial. I was wondering if you had any videos or walkthroughs on how to fix the storage box doors that are underneath the clock? I know the top door has a Dorman kit replacement, but I haven't found anything online for the bottom door.
Hi and thanks for watching. I don't have any videos on how to fix the storage box doors that are underneath the clock. Sorry and hope you are able to get yours fixed.
Merci pour votre générosité de nous éclairer sur ces différentes réparations que nous pouvons faire nous-même grâce à votre expérience. Alors je vous remercie. Alain Vautrin.
Hi Jonathan, Thanks for watching! It is hard to say without being able to take a look at it. This is one possible fix but there could be other things wrong as well. Thanks for watching and I hope you are able to get it fixed!
Is it absolutely necessary to d/c the battery like you suggested? I remember I installed a cd player and did not d/c the battery (I think!) Thanks for posting this video. It's really helpful!
Hardly necessary. When you pull the white and black plugs off, those plugs are female, you won't short them by touching. Not sure they are hot even, because the clock goes dark when the ignition is off.
Your solder did not flow onto the parts properly because there is a plastic coating on then. Either skip the solder and just heat the old solder joints or remove the plastic before you solder.
@@ToddsGarage My respects to you for still responding to people to this day from a 5 year old video. You also helped me out with this common clock issue on my 06 Corolla. Thanks!
Yours is probably like the Australian version, looks the same but the clock is LCD and the backlight bulb blows, T5 apparently. Seems people replace it with an LED T5. Don’t know why they use a different clock module in the USA version, seems odd to design two different ones 🤷♂️.
