    Ok so as Kevin Kleinrock…I can say I didn’t expect to be sent THIS 15 years after the fact. And, I’m genuinely blown away by the accuracy of the piece. The ONLY thing that didn’t go down quite as it was laid out is that Mike Johnson from PWInsider called me to give me the news prior to running the story. But accurate, Mike knew from an inside MTV/Viacom source before any of us at WSX or Big Vision were told. Thank you for this incredible piece.

      I liked it. But the MTV crap about not 1 punch or chairshot is crap. We should've seen the occasional wrestling move or hold. If only for a touch of narrative. But I understand that it wasn't your fault. I consider myself a fan to this day. (Btw, didn't MTV understand that ANYTHING done on WSX could be replicated, if only in a modified version?)

    • @kevinbve
      @kevinbve 2 роки тому +21

      @@jackmackakaheavyguyhaiku545 the logic still baffles me to this day my friend. Like a kid can’t find barbed wire or thumbtacks. But, we had to work with what we were given. Houston Curtis, Big Vision owner and the man responsible for WSX even happening thanks to his connections at MTV and his belief in my idea, has all of the master tapes BEFORE the MTV edits were made and I can only hope that one day he chooses to release them on BluRay or stream them because it would be a very different show. If you watch the WSXtra matches on the DVD set, you’ll see matches edited like actual wrestling matches - some really great wrestling on there.

    MTV did host Sunday Night Heat from 2000-2003. I always though Wrestling Society X was MTV's delayed way of getting wrestling back on the channel.
    But I loved WSX. It was my introduction to so many indie wrestlers who would become my favorites over the following years. I loved Colt Cabana's Matt Classic gimmick.

    The career of Ricky Banderas in America is so weird. Dude held basically every major title in Lucha and then comes to TNA for like two weeks, has a match with Abyss, goes to WSX, goes back to AAA and WWC, then returns as Mil Muertes and completely reinvents his career.

    I have the dumbest nostalgia for this show. I realize that it was wrestling junk food with all of the nutrition cut out (storytelling in-ring) and all of the sugar ramped up (high spots/hardcore craziness), but it also came about at a time where I was just starting to learn the names and reputations of some of these indie guys. Once every few years or so I'll go back and watch as much of the show as I can push myself to get through on UA-cam, if not just for appreciation of what it left in it's wake with Lucha Underground and other crazy cinematic wrestling concepts. The commentary was bad, the musical acts and matches rarely got enough time, and some of the concepts were beyond silly, but it was my first glimpse of the Colt Cabanas, Matt Crosses, Scorpio Skys, Joey Kaos's, Tyler Blacks, and Jimmy Jacobs's of the wrestling world. It's nuts to think all of these years later that some are still among my favorite wrestlers.

    Awesome video, I love that this little time capsule now exists on youtube.
    It didn't even last 9 episodes here in Australia. From memory it got 2 or 3 weeks at ridiculous times and then it was never seen again.
    Still, it was a chaotic trainwreck that I could get behind, and I ordered the DVD set with my next highspots order.
    Here's the thing - this video says you only got to see the ep10 exploding cage match if you bought the DVD. Even then a lot of us didn't get to see it. That episode was all screwed up on the DVD. Highspots replaced it, and the replacement had the same problem. At that point they said there was no point replacing it, as about 75-80% of the DVDs all had the same technical issue.

Fondly remembered guys like Tyler Black, Jimmy Jacobs, Jack Evans, Ricky Banderas, Vampiro, Scoprio Sky, Teddy Hart, Joey Ryan, etc. Exciting action (well, most of the time) but too many silly FX, match stipulations, no continuity, etc. Dig the underground vibe and some musical performances (like Zakk Wylde). You made 1 mistake. Before Wrestling Society X, the last time pro wrestling was on MTV was actually 1999. When WCW and MTV teamed up to create SnowBrawl and BeachBrawl.

    Heat was aired on MTV from 2000-2003. So no, there had been plenty of exposure to modern wrestling for the MTV audience. Seems like a major oversight for a wrestling channel!
