    That TRD oil filter looks like an AMSOIL filter and they are priced about the same.
    On my Tundra I use the standard Toyota filter and change the oil at 5k intervals. I've put over 250,000 miles on each Toyota I've own using this practice, without any oil related engine issues.

    Standard oil filter and change your oil every 4-5k miles and you ll be good. Dont believe all the 7-10k mile oil change intervals. Real honest toyota mechanics say 4-5k

    • @DB-qm4jx
      @DB-qm4jx 5 місяців тому +1

      If you love your truck. Then yep exactly! 4k-5k is perfect. I rather do sooner at 4k than 5,001. I also do test my oil, BUT why start any type of wear when I want to keep the reliable for 20 years

    • @alexs825
      @alexs825 4 місяці тому

      So you’re using intervals based on conventional oil but full synthetic is specified. Obviously won’t hurt but there’s no relevance there since the oil is fundamentally different

    • @DB-qm4jx
      @DB-qm4jx 4 місяці тому +2

      No , I'm using intervals based on science and a schedule. The science part meaning I do oil analysis with a TBI number.
      The schedule is at 5000. The reason is oil analysis takes time to come back. Which means if I tested at 5000 and waited a couple months I could already be at 7000 which is when wear could already start to take place.
      We all know that around 5000 is when oil contamination begins to supersede its retention ability.
      Give or take depending on your environment, your engine, and driving habits.
      Conventional oil it was 3000 miles is what they told you. It could've been more it could've been less depending on all those factors.
      But it was generally safe to say you're only gonna keep your car for 10 maybe 15 years. So that worked on conventional oil. You also did not have hydraulic lifters or hydraulic actuated valve adjusters.
      Nowadays our engines have all of that plus we can drive our cars 10 , 15, 20years plus.
      Kind of like I get to have a dozen Twinkies per year . And only have two that means most likely depending on other things I eat Isse and everything else I probably will have lower cholesterol in 10 years which means my heart will probably last longer. If I have 24 Twinkies per year which is the equivalent of going 10,000 miles on my car. I probably will shave off the significant portion of my life in the end. I noticed the problems in the next decade or so most likely not but towards the end not only does it wear me out it significantly creates a lot of other problems besides my heart or in the case of my engine my lifters or damage. Not to mention your timing could go out from wear.
      I would say it depends on how long do you want to keep your car. It's all based on science not just some arbitrary time and numbers. But if you take the averages of what we know you've pretty much configure 5000 is safe. 6000 or 7000, probably safe too. But if you tow take a lot of short trips. Live in a cold environment, drive hard live in a dusty area. so on and so forth the oil becomes safest to change it 5000. That is why I change mine at 5000 it makes it easier to keep track of gives me peace of mind and I still send in for my analysis and TBN number.
      I hope that helps you friend

    • @alexs825
      @alexs825 4 місяці тому

      @@DB-qm4jx there’s a lot of evidence contrary to your claims of “science”. If you’re sending oil tests and they say you can’t go 10k maybe it’s because you tow or have something else degrading it. Lots of short trips so it never cooks the moisture out live in a humid climate. But that’s specific to you so a blanket statement isn’t relevant either. There’s 1.5 million mile Tacomas on 10k intervals. It mostly is driven by what makes the owner feel good about it not science

My current wheels are P265/55R17 Firestone Destinations, a boring street tire. My thoughts as a mechanic of 20 years on oil changes is “ Oil is cheap, engines are not “. Change at minimum 5k on Full synthetics and 3k on the Dino sauce. Seen all makes and models last 300k with frequent oil changes on the original engine. Love Toyotas because very simple to maintain with no real huge issues usually. And the 4x4 fluids stay clean even at 300k with fluid changes every 50k or even 100k.

      You’re starting off with a clean slate..my best advice for you is Don’t buy anything until you sit there and think it through on how you’re actually gonna be using your truck (overland, mall crawler, light adventures…etc). You will save so much money by just doing yourself that alone. A lot of people start off by keeping it simple (cheap lift & rims/tires) but then they start getting addicted and buying the more expensive stuff and redoing their setup all over again. As for spacers…they have a bad reputation for mainly 2 reasons…people like to go cheap and buy the Amazon special and they don’t properly torque&check their spacers. Don’t be cheap on something that’s holding your wheel on while you’re going 60+mph🤦‍♂️. Either buy spidertrax or bora spacers and make sure they are hub centric, also buy the ET lug nuts

Towing things to travel around…may wanna look into upgrading into a big brake kit (for safety reasons) stoptech or power brake. Then look into aftermarket bumpstops to help prolong the life of your shocks and it makes the ride a little smoother…a brand like durobumps should do. I’m only a year older than you😂. The trd oil filter does look better but when you install nobody will see it so why pay double for a trd when the regular oem works the same

    I've said it before and I'll say it again. Go TRD if your Toyota is an actual TRD but OEM Toyota is high enough quality so unless you have extra money to spend it's not necessary to go TRD.

    • @miiiikeeed

      A TRD is a basic Tacoma with more options. Only real big difference is the locking differential between models. I went with SR5 and saved about 5k. If i want a locking differential i can install it and still save over 3k. TRD is a name that makes you think you're getting more but you're not.

    • @87teggy
      @87teggy 2 місяці тому

      @@miiiikeeed would you buy TRD parts for your SR5 Tacoma? And what if you got your hand on a TRD Pro for cheap, would you replace any broken TRD parts with TRD or Toyota OEM or aftermarket? Personally, I wouldn't waste money on TRD parts unless it's a real TRD Tacoma. Keep it's value up.

      @@87teggy Everyone has their own way how they see things. After being a car mechanic on the side for years, airplane plane mechanic by trade. I would not give a warranty for non oem parts. The reason other places give warranties on their work is because they get a 5-dollar sparkplug their cost but charge you 20 for it, so if they due warranty work their still ahead of the game. I didn`t do that to people. Just me, I don`t see the extra value in buying a trd. Maybe if you saw my truck, you might see what I'm talking about. It was bought with the predator edition on it with TRD lift kit. It's a 21 4X4 and i got it for 37k and its still worth 37. Me, I`m too cheap to buy a pro and if you get a TRD off road loaded you`re almost at a pro and isn`t it about a 10k difference.?

      @@miiiikeeed yeah I know what you mean. It really does depend on the vehicle. I'd never put overpriced TRD parts on a non-TRD. It's just a waste of money. I'd put TRD parts on a TRD Pro, anything else I'd put Toyota OEM or even cheap aftermarket if the car's a high mileage beater.

      If you go online to your closest Toyota dealer and order the parts online and then pick them up, the price is reduced allot. You will see another price that has a lined threw it, that is walk up to counter price. I got mudflaps for 65.00 and TRD washable air filter (k/n style) for 55.00. wiper refills for 8.00. Just bought new instrument cluster lens for 30.00 cause mine was cracked and scratched. I believe those prices a very reasonable. A lot of people are not aware of the reduced prices when you buy direct online.

    Honestly, I can’t think of a single TRD part that is worth the money. Better off buying aftermarket.
    Oil filter: get a Wix XP
    Intake: use the K&N (not the filter), and it isn’t for power. It’s for noise and to save space in the engine bay by getting rid of the resonance chambers
    Exhaust: just keep it stock. V6 noises are not good
    Skid plates: take your pick of aftermarket
    Wheels: again, take your pick
    Just my opinion. Love the vids but people usually buy the TRD stuff because of the badge

    I seen a Project Farm vid. showing that the K&N filters let in more larger particles than the OEM air filters.
    + it's more maintenance to clean & re-oil those K&N. No thanks. Stick with the plain air filters and protect your engine.
    In another vid. you showed your truck weight on a scale. Ideally you would want to lower your gross weight rather than making it hundreds of pounds heavier.
