- Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Michael Lee Firkins Licks From 1992. As I mentioned in the video, I was honored to meet Michael and write a feature lesson as a tribute to him in Guitar Player Magazine last year, so this lesson was fun to put together and long overdue, as I've had a lot of requests to feature him and his fiery playing, so here we go!
The licks and ideas shared in this lesson came from some live footage of Micheal in Japan from 1992, and really capture some great phrases and ideas to explore, including a tasty bar dipped pentatonic phrase, a bluesy wide intervallic idea, a crammed melodic phrase, a shredtastic climbing legato run, and much more!
If you're a fan of Michael's playing then you know what's coming in this episode, but if you're new to him and his music, get ready - he'll blow your mind and tear up your fingers trying to emulate and play like him. He's a one-of-a-kind musician and one of the tastiest players on the scene.

Probably one of the most underrated guitarists of all time, he should be a household name.
I’ve been friends with Michael Lee for 30+ years and he is as real as you can get. Grateful, humble, respectful are what you from him before his talents. His enthusiasm is infectious as is his music. I appreciate your kind words towards him. Many THANKS! He’s definitely deserving of them. Positive Vibrations…
He was one of the most innovative guitar players that I can recall and I still have the same disc from 1991 That's crazy I'm always playing that.
Awesome lesson, tasty licks. MLF and Greg Howe kept things funky, bluesy and swinging just when we were drowning in The post Yngwie neoclassical players
Greg Howe the truest of true masters approaching Holdsworth fluency. Free from genre constraints. Possessed of limitless ability.
MLF is amazing! A true standout from the Shrapnel era.
I love that first album 🎶🎸
Yeah me too!
The 1st Firkins album blew me away too. Space Crickets/Rain In The Tunnel/Deja Blues are some of the best instrumental tracks I've ever heard. Guy is so original in his style and blending so many different genres of music.
Dude, I love Michael Lee, but, my man, you really know your teaching skills, mil gracias 🙏🏼
The laughing stacks lick was one of my favorite MLF licks. He made the guitar sound as though it was laughing. Truly brilliant!
I remember hearing about Michael Lee Firkins from a Van Halen interview. I figuered if he could impress Eddie he was worth checking out.
MLF and Greg Howe were a breath of fresh air for me. Was obsessed with neo classical shred for a long while.
Intervallic Phrase is Nasty!!!!!
I saw him with the Jeff Beck tribute yesterday and it was Amazing! Michael was always melodic, accurate, intense! Great show!!
Thx for this short lesson, I will work...
Fabulous lesson!! And Thank you for helping spread the word about michael lee Firkins!!! Exceptional musician indeed!!!!
I’ve been a MASSIVE MLF fan since first album came out. Don’t get me wrong, the other Shrapnel guys were great, but Michael really stood out and sent my playing in a whole new direction.
This guy can play any lick that anybody has played apparently? I think I know why he has never gotten famous although he should be. He has an insatiable appetite for new material and his brain probably produces massive amounts but it’s not enough! Dude you are fantastic thank you so much.
that second lick explain a great part of the mystery for me !!many thx for that one cheers!
Great lesson thanks. Michaels debut album was one of the best to come from the Shrapnel era 👏
The 90s had so many great guitar players who put out some phenomenal work that got overlooked as the grunge movement infested the airwaves.
Hey David, thank you so much for this great episode on MLF! His debut album made a huge impact on me back in the day. Your channel rocks!
Truly the golden era of guitar technique development.
Sick!
Yes Sir...that howling Iguana is a badass to the enth degree🤘 Thanks for this gem Dave, what a great surprise and another sweet trip down memory lane...
I had no idea who he was but I'm glad I decided to go ahead and watch because you're right. That was jaw-dropping
Great player with exquisite phrasing. I have all his older cd’s from years ago.🍺’ski great job!
Michael's bar dips were to mimic the sound of a slide. Crazily accurate.
I remember him at Gearfest and he was playing at Headrush. I was there with Ibanez and I walked through to play my Jem through a Headrush board. I was shocked to see himas well!! Before he started, I requested Cactus Cruz.
So creative and bluesy. First time I heard him
I remember his first record it blew my mind I tried to get my cousin to listen to it my cuz played songs like Birds of Fire at house parties in the late 70's but he was tired of guitar soloing and was just into writing alternative pop, so he wouldn't listen. MLF was and is amazing, and his first record the songs were great imo. Great video David.
Before following your channel I thought I had listened to all guitar players worth listen to - how wrong was I! And now I can even play some riffs and licks of those players!
Such a great player and an original sound for a Shrapnel shredder. I still love it.
Great lesson. Highly underrated player
Great lesson! You are good👍
I've been lovin' his stuff since 1990💜
Jrome W Sac Ca
More of those cool 80s players, please!!
Nice one David almost forgot how good He is 👍
ohhh awesome love the laughing stacks lick! thx!
Killer TFA! Was also blown away by his debut album. Amazing and different technique.
I am so glad I found this channel!
Nice work. MLF’s stuff is not easy. He’s amazing.
Great lesson Dave. love Firkins. He has always been one of my favorites, but doesn't get the love he deserves. Nice to see someone acknowledging him.
Firkins is one of my favourite ever players. Rain In The Tunnel is a song I can listen to over and over.
Legenderry demonstration as always! I tip my hat to you
Pretty killer licks.... Dig it
Another Great Lesson Dave-Now I know what he was doing..Thanks-Still listening to MLF 1st CD...Hope there is a (Live) Gearfest next June..Can't beleive the # of Great Artist I've seen at Gearfest Clinics and the Outdoor Pavillion..
Absolutely loved MLF. When his first album came out I wore it out. I was like a freshman in high school and he stood out like no other. The way he slid into stuff was like 🤯
Sad to hear Dusty Hill passed away 😢
Rest in peace dusty hill, its sad zz top is over.
Pointless anecdote time: Despite watching Mr. David Brewster for years, my guitar playing buddy still doesn't associate the name with Late Night Lessons. We'll be talking about the artists, the licks, specific episodes, etc, but he somehow refuses to remember the names "David Brewster" or "Late Night Lessons." At some point, his memory got altered in such a way that he has to make sure I'm talking about the same guy by doing a very specific impersonation where, like Shaggy from Scooby Doo, he says, "Hey man..." Mr. Brewster has never talked like Shaggy from Scooby Doo nor has he ever even said those specific words together on camera, but for some reason, my buddy Corey Keith (he might read this comment) insists that "awesome guitar player with the hat and the posters on his walls" is a Hannah Barbara character.
another great one !
Michael Lee Firkins is one of my absolute favorite players since the first record and an inspiration since then ...still an unbelievable great first record ....thanks David , very cool :-)
MLF Is a monster player but to be honest I forgot all about him. Haven't even heard his name since the mid to late 90's. Very Cool licks. Thanks.
Nice T- Shirt ...I love Sweetwater !
I bought Michael's first album when it came out and the faux slide stuff blew me away. I liked him best of all the Shrapnel guys. Solid lesson, Dave.
Thanks!
That last lick sounds even better with the band. A good player plays with the band, not just crazy fast shred licks.
That second riff is amazing
Hi,I'm learning Jonas Bryssling, he's my favorite player.
Not very well known but, he's very interesting player to check out.
I find him super challenging ,Kevin Heiderich does some playthroughs of Spawn of Possession of which he (Bryssling)is the writer of some great music, check him out.
Thanks for making this, great video.
Was so excited to finally see a lesson on this man! Gonna be working on these concepts!
At that time in the early 90s I'd always imagine how cool it would have been if he was the lead guitarist for the Black Crowes , i feel his style would've been perfect for them
First heard about him in an early copy of Guitar Techniques in the UK. Enjoyed this lesson Thanks 🇬🇧😀 and another thing …….Bernie Torme 👍
Just read about Dusty Hill ~ another one gone to Gods House Band RIP Dusty
I love MLF! His debut album was my best friend for quite a number of years although he would come out later and said he hated the sound and his tone. I'm sure all his fans would disagree with him. Oh and who can forget that candy apple red Yamaha Pacifica?
his coolest was by far the Pacifica Tele
Perhaps his stint in Japan was initiated by Yamaha, just an idea though. He sported their new models at that time. I heard about him doing a clinic near where I live around that time.
bro your Strat stays in tune good when you use your whammy bar. Locking tuner? Or no??? Great fun lesson brother, thank you & rock on!!
There’s a guy can’t recall his name but you can find them if you look it up he does a rendition of 24 Grand Ave. on his piano or keyboard is freaking amazing
I found him you've got to see it
Alejandro Gomez 24 grand avenue except Michael Lee firkins
I covered Rain in The Tunnel, Deja Blues and Saturday Night in my channel. Love MLF!
👍
I agree with all comments....LOVE MLF!!! But what happened to him? Where is he and what is he doing!?! We want more MLF!!
Bad-ass musician.
Rain in the tunnel
Cool lesson
I’d love to see a lesson on some Aussie bands like
Radio Birdman
Screaming Tribesmen
Hoodoo Gurus
The Hitmen
Vs Spy Vs Spy
The Angels
Baby Animals
Screaming Jets
Skyhooks
Midnight Oil
INXS
Hunters & Collectors
You must have really loved having the phone conversation with Michael Lee Firkins. It seems that Michael Lee Firkins habits are shifting into different positions that are the next scale degree higher. I like how Randy Rhoads would shift into different positions by using the last note of one position as the "common note/pivot note" and shift into a different position by going into a different mode or scale, its an advanced level that people overlook about Randy Rhoads about "shifting into positions" maybe you can make a video lesson about that. Yngwie just made a new album for you to make a new yngwie lesson 2021
I thought you were gonna play that Yamaha Pacifica shown in the beginning
huh- using the V-amp head now... do you gig with that? sounds great although some would turn up their noses at it
How about a lesson on extended fret guitars?
Skill level lesson: Master.
Not for the nimbled fingered, and not 1 down like!
just heard ZZ top Bass player Dusty has passed away....sad days.....
I'm from Omaha..."lesser known"? Lol If you're a boxer Terrence Crawford is lesser known? 🤣
