Bruce - any chance of a new instrumental solo album? Some of the tracks off the last couple albums have been mind bogglingly good. Giving Up The Ghost, Akiko, Leap of Faith - these tracks are amazing at so many levels. You really know how to craft some outstanding music.
Bruce is the man. I was extremely fortunate to have a couple private lessons with Bruce while attending GIT 88-89. I still have his hand written notes from the lessons.
My best friend from high school and I had the privilege of meeting Paul & Bruce in '85 in Hollywood. My friend and I traveled out to Hollywood for the summer so he could attend GIT. I was able to take a guitar lesson from Bruce and fortunate to have him get the band to autograph the Street Lethal vinyl album for me. Will never forget going to watch them play on the strip at the Whiskey or maybe it was the Roxy or Troubadour. A memory I'll always cherish!
Thank you and you're totally welcome! Bruce is such a monster player, I felt I had to include him in this series. Such a brilliant player and so few people even know who he is. : ) Take care and stay tuned for more lessons and material!
I absolutely love live albums. and yes grew up listening to Racer-X. Bruce's solo is super tasty and loved All the solos from Paul, Scott and John as well.
I got to see Bruce play live twice in Fresno, CA back in the day! Once with Racer X (my fav all time concert) and with The Scream, still have the poster all the band signed.
Thank you! That silly little lick helped me get a better grip and feel for sweeping and I've shown it to a number of students over the years and it helped them too. It's funny how something little like that can really help. : ) Thanks for watching and for this comment too!
Bruce has always been a beast, So are you man, you are an amazing guitar player, thanx for all these lessons, im learning alot and i thankyou , i really aprecciate it.!!!!!!
Late Night Lessons i saw them at msg in the theater, front row 20 ft from the pa pointed directly at my left ear. Still to this day i have tinnitus in my left ear from the set with paul and bruce, was worth it though!
I had the first live album on vinyl. I remember waiting for it to arrive and being so stoked when I heard it. I didn’t hear the second one until recently. I loved the Scream album also.
I always get a lot out of your lessons . it's great how you choose some cool licks and break them down. if I'm wanting more the recommendations you give are helpful and it's good to figure out some things on my own after you've gotten a good kick off started. thanks so much David.👍👍🤘
Big, big, big “LIKE” for this video! (and ALL of your videos!) I was blessed to attend GIT in ‘89-‘90 and Bruce’s ‘open counseling’ sessions were by far my favorite and most memorable times that year. I even got to sub for Bruce’s regular guitar tech for a show at the Troubador that year. Unforgettable experiences. Your way of demonstrating and explaining even complex techniques and applied theory is spectacular. Thank you for sharing all this cool stuff!!!
Many thanks for this one. I love all the background info and stories you include alongside the actual lessons and performances themselves. Bruce is one of those players I listened to back in the day and then sadly kinda forgot about in the years to come (I'm sorry Bruce lol). Thanks for reminding me what a brilliant player he is. Def going to revisit his work and these licks now (to the extent I'm able hehe; practice practice practice).
This video is excellent. I always loved Bruce's playing (probably more than Paul's), only because of how he combined shred and blues. Props to you for being able to play those licks so fluidly. Corabi and Bruce were a great combination with that Scream album. Where there was more blues, but always had hints of shred in there. Great vid!
Racer X was by far the best shred's band that ever came out, very melodic and cool songs, Gilbert and Bouillet being the best shred's duo that ever played, in my opinion. I love all their albums, wish they would get back togheter for another record.
I'm so glad I came upon your channel. Amazingly, I'd never heard of Bruce Bouillet. He's phenomenal. I like Paul Gilbert as much as anyone and his technical ability is something to be highly respected as well as his writing but I have to say, after listening to Bruce for the last 3 hours, I like his music better. He too is a technical wizard but what's more impressive to me is his phrasing and harmonic/melodic content. He played a lick or phrase that caught my attention more times than I can remember. I can hear him using harmonic minor and melodic minor modes so creatively. Thank you so much for turning me on to his music. I can't wait to start ripping off his licks...
This is the kind of message and feedback that I LOVE getting. Thank you so much and it makes me feel great to expose some folks to a few lesser-known players. Bruce really is a monster and while I'm a HUGE Paul Gilbert fan, I'm also an equally as big Bouillet fan. When I learned that Paul taught Bruce at GIT and then gave him a gig in Racer X when he needed a guitarist blew my mind when I first heard that story and learned the tale. I was like "Paul taught him and then EMPLOYED him? No way. That's too cool!" : ) Thanks again and ROCK ON \m/
Bruce had started taking lessons from Paul at the time he was looking for a good second guitarist for Racer X and Paul was amazed that this unknown kid could keep up with his licks, sweeps, etc. and so invited him to be in Racer X.
Dude! I can't believe Bruce saw your vid and commented!!! That's awesome. You've arrived my friend!!!😜🤘🏻🇺🇸 keep up the great work Hoosier! Woody Woodpecker 😆 that's great! Taken me way back!🤓
Your channel is definitely in my top three... Ty so much for this Dave. Wish I had some tabs on this. Incredible work... I always loved racer x since I first heard them... Remember the old ibanez promo ads with racer x and the neon color guitars... Oh the 80s lol
I bought that live album the second it came out and Bruce's solo blew my mind! I've been practicing it for the last 25 years haha! Thanks for the help!
Dave Brewster Rocks!! Definitely sharing this on the Facebook Racer x group!! Bruce!! Hope you guys can get back together as Racer X for a comeback one more time.. people would turn out I’m sure..
RacerX!!! Yes. That band inspired me to learn guitar. Don't get it twisted....I can't play for shit but both Bouillet & Gilbert made me want to play. Many thanks for the lessons.
My first exposure to Bruce's playing actually wasn't with Racer X, but instead with The Scream. That "Let It Scream" album just smoked with massive-sounding guitars, bass and drums. Credit where it's due to Eddie Kramer for his excellent production work on that album. Bruce's solos on that record were a tasty mix of shred, bluesy feel and vibrato.
Dude. I automatically knew you would show that first lick. It blew my mind too. All I can think of is New York skylines and for some reason Spider-Man.
I thought it was a shame he was overshadowed by Paul. Paul's a beast, but Bruce is very accomplished in his own right. I loved the Scream album....showed some blues-hard rock flavor on that. But both Bruce and Paul were SCARY in RacerX. Thanks for this lesson David \m/
Racer X rocked and thank you so much! : ) I think/feel that Paul had an opportunity and it just happened the way it happened. It wasn't quite the way it was originally planned, much like The Scream and John leaving for the Motley Crue gig. If everything had played out differently, Bruce would be well-known and as Paul's equal. Take care and rock on man\m/
@@LateNightLessons watched your Ritchie kotzen video too killer choice and one of my favorite players as well would love to see a John Sykes blue murder appreciation type of lick lesson keep up the good work
The string skipping shapes are Paganini inspired. The string skipping is the only way to play them. For example, a two octave major arpeggio would be 1(1)-3(1)-5(2)-1(2)-3(2)-5(2)-1(3). Paganini skips notes in this arpeggio. So it is 1(1)-5(1)-3(2)-1(3). String skipping is necessary. Tapping can work as well. Paganini rips through all the inversions like this as well. I can barely play them, the are freaking hard. Thanks for the video, Bruce is a player I will never forget. I stole some his stuff and played it at blues jams in Stormy Monday on those changes in that tune. The old guys I was playing with at the time almost had heart attacks!!!! The 80's were an amazing decade for hard working guitarist. So much fun!!!!
Thanks so much John! I used to date a classical violinist and she and I would constantly jam and trade notes. She was really into Paganini and Bach and we'd always get stuck on some wicked arpeggio or melodic line and have "near-arguments" about it. I hate to admit it, as I don't really miss the relationship, but the musical jams and music-related arguments were wonderful! : ) Take care!
So good to hear someone talk with such passion about this amazing solo of Bruce's and his playing in general. I remember listening to this back in the day and feeling like the only person in the world who appreciated just how good it was! Your playing is immense, I discovered you recently after watching your John Norum video. I'll definitely be subscribing! Another amazing guitarist of this era who I think is desperately underrated is Mark McGee from Vicious Rumors. Check out his solo on the track Children, sublime!
Thanks , I always wondered how they did that .. I saw a Bruce vid a while back giving lesson to a student ..I can't find it anymore but as I recall he has some really cool jazzy stuff . I sure wish that someone would put it up again
Dig this lesson!! Really good stuff!! I saw Racer X at the Omni, in Oakland Ca., which is the clip you use for that first arpeggio. Great show!(I have pictures of it somewhere) Also got to see The Scream in Austin Tx. The cool thing is that Bruce’s tone on The Scream album still sounds like his solo tone on “Live Extreme Volume 2”.
I think of that lick as more Phrygian Dominant. Gm harmonic minor starting on D. It fits perfect and Paul and Bruce were big Yngwie fans back then so it seems appropriate. Just my 2 cents, although Paul was my teacher back in '85 when I lived in LA, I used to got see Racer X all the time back then. Great times. Cool lessons BTW.
Brilliant lesson thank you, would love to see you do a lesson on the intro licks to Sacrifice and maybe some Michael Lee Firkins sweeps off his first album 🙏🏼
I have always been of the mindset that Bruce's solo from the live album was so much more enjoyable than Paul Gilbert's. No disrespect to Paul, I mean, come on! But Bruce's musicality is just off the charts here. Flawlessly executed!
Bruce's Solo has always been one of my most favorite guitar pieces ever. It's right up there with Eruption. The only guitar solo I like better is from the Hear N Aid - Stars song, but that is like 20 people so, yeah... 😎
Great vid as always! Would love to see a video on John Sykes. Or an Uli video would be great as well! Keep up the great work. Been turning a lot of my buddies on to your great work here.
Brilliant lesson - been going back to this several times - and a big Thank you David for introducing me to The Scream ( how did I miss them??) bought the album - remastered version has a few extras - what a great album - love Bruces playing and Johns vocals are spot on.
Thanks again Richard and yeah, The Scream rocks. I'm glad to hear that you checked them out and became a fan. They didn't last long, but that album was really solid. : ) Thanks again and take care! Cheers!
Thanks I've been burned out on everything Neo thrash THEORY ETC looking searching then I discovered him the movie THEY CALL ME BRUCE should have been a documentary
Man this is amazing, i always want to learn this solo but i have never found any tabs. Please make one or make a video teaching how to play that solo. Thanks so much
Loved Bruce's order of control album, released years after all the racer x stuff and it's good, so much so, I wish Paul Gilbert had gone down that route for his solo stuff. Its a punchy, shreddy feast
Cool I remember Bruce great player . Could you do a lesson on I'm the one VH . I would like to hear your take on it its a shuffle masterpiece . No one ever plays the riff or solos right either I'd like to see what you come up with . On of the best guitar channel on UA-cam by the way . Stellar .
We grew up in the same time period and apparently dig all the same stuff. This is so cool and I'm from the Midwest as well. Sure do miss the old days. Glad I found your channel. I already said it, but check out Harry Cody (Shotgun Messiah) Second Coming album. He is in my top 5 guitarists and your style is similar.
just realized the secondary dominant lick at the end, where you are playing the chords, sounds exactly the same as the pre-chorus to Motorman - 2-for-1 in this vid :)
Thanks for including me in your series, it brought back some great memories....You play the phrases better then me.!!!! Keep up the great work.
Wow Bruce - thank you so much!
What an honor!
I feel like framing this comment.
: )
Take care!!!!
Bruce Bouillet Bruce you are not only a great guitar player, you are a class act in every interview, podcast and even this reply!
Bruce, thank you so much for helping to write the Gospel of Shred. Your playing and recordings helped to inspire so many.
B.B. you're a great inspiration.

“Bruce’s Solo” one of my hands down favorite moments of Racer X ever
Bruce's work on Let It Scream is OUTSTANDING!
Cool video, I saw racer x at the Reseda Country Club back in 88, 89 blew my mind and my ear drums.
Was there too, front left Paul' Side!! Best shows, best memories!

Very cool of Bruce to give you props for what you're doing. You deserve it!
You are an amazing guitar player. Glad I found you. I'm in a rut. Yes, even after 40 years I'm still learning.
Great job! Bruce is one great player!
Bruce is an absolute beast on guitar. Awesome lesson

Rock on and thanks for watching!
The Screams debut was superior. Well so was racer x for sure
I saw them so many times back in 86-88. L.A. fucking didn't know what they had, but some of us did and we were there, all the time🎸😎🎸
Yes, Bruce kicks ass! Love Racer X and The Scream, thanks for the lesson!
Bruce`solo on extreme Volume is kind of the holy grail of shred guitar
Thank you for this!!! Bruce’s solo and John’s bass solo are the highlights of the album for me.
I had to give this a like before even watching because anything Bruce does is badass.
Explaining sweep picking by using the Woody Woodpecker theme is a pivotal moment in guitar history.
Glad I found this channel. Subscribed.
Thank you!
That silly little lick helped me get a better grip and feel for sweeping and I've shown it to a number of students over the years and it helped them too.

The Scream album was a favorite for quite a while. Need to get back into it now...
Bruce is amazing. Saw him with paul on g3, and they just killed it. Shame that people dont appreciate talented musicians anymore these days
That G3 tour was really good and it was great finally seeing them play together too!

A vid on Bouillet? Dude, that's serious. BB is no joke. I remember seeing him in SF. Crazy shredder.
Great lesson 👍🤘
I remember this incredible BB solo, very bluesy and different from PG. My friends and me were transcribing it like crazy ! Great video man !

Those sweep sections are insane and would make Gambale blush (a little bit - haha).
And thank you so much!

Such tasty shred.
I totally agree.
Racer X were just on fire and killin' it the entire time.
Musical flamethrowers.

@@LateNightLessons no disrespect to Bruce but I prefer your playing of his licks. The live footage had that nervous overly aggressive feeling.
Man you are great. I still hope we can tie up one day (buddy from Vincennes). Be cool to hang out and sponge.
Loved Bruce's order of control album, released years after all the racer x stuff and it's good, so much so, I wish Paul Gilbert had gone down that route for his solo stuff. Its a punchy, shreddy feast
His approach to modes is COMPLETELY. Different. One Bad mutha
Thanks again bro and I'll see what I can do with that request.

\m/ ROCK ON \m/
just realized the secondary dominant lick at the end, where you are playing the chords, sounds exactly the same as the pre-chorus to Motorman - 2-for-1 in this vid :)
