Which tower is for my carrier? How do you find a cell tower? Which way should I aim my antenna? These are all questions you may have asked yourself.
There are a number of reasons why you might want to locate a nearby cell tower. To aim your outside antenna if you're installing a cell phone signal booster. So you know which side of the house has stronger signal and can place calls from there. These are just a few reasons.
There's an easy way to find a cell tower through a free app called Open Signal. Open Signal is a great app for Android or iOS deices and best of all it's free!
With Open Signal you can find a nearby cell tower, see your signal level, view all nearby cell towers on a map, do a speed test, see coverage maps for all carriers and even check your data usage.
I'll show you how to find a cell tower using the Open Signal app and run through the other features as well.

Just now finished installing WeBoost. 4 LTE bars. FB, and Google load fast, real fast. For 8 years we had 1 bar or no service. Today we used OpenSignal App to find the cell tower. My wife and daughter are amazed and so am I. I give WeBoost 5 stars, AAA+++ rating. My advice: Carefully follow the instructions, DON'T get frustrated and leave OpenSignal a bad review and threaten to return WeBust to Best Buy like I did. Stick with it, take a beak if you get frustrated, and you will be happy and feel a sense of accomplishment when finished. We love our new WeBoost!!! I wish I could post a picture, but I don't know how.

Great instructional video. Too bad the current release of the app no longer matches the video. Aside from the speedtest, I found the app to be useless. I installed it to get info my local towers and signal strength. The current version displays a "Beta" banner on the map and never loads local towers, and the signal strength compass points in the opposite direction of the actual tower.
For Android phones, Network Cell Info Lite lacks the map of local towers that OpenSignal *used* to have. But at least it identifies the actual connected tower and provides accurate info on it.

I am in a rural area between Valley Mills and Clifton, TX. I had to turn off wifi and two or three other things in iPhone settings for OpenSignal to work. OpenSignal instructions has nothing about this in their instructions. Once that was tweaked it works great. I will do a review on WeBoost once installed and used for a few days.

OpenSignal guesses which cell tower your phone is connected to. It appears to pick the closest cell tower used by your provider, no test of signal strength, no test of the cell tower's ID. Right now I'm sitting 6 feet from a new CellSpot and to which my phone is decidedly connected, the CellSpot is new and is not in the GPS data base of cell towers. Yet OpenSignal still insists I'm connected to another CellSpot (or booster) a quarter mile away because it is the closest on the basis of registered CellTowers.

This app does not work, the pointer points one direction - turn the phone a little and it points a different direction. Map dosnt work most the time, and signal strength is so/so. I found the strongest tower by other means and the app pointed in the other direction. I even talked to a weboost tech and they said they stopped using it cause its unreliable. Not sure why this vid is still up. I found a net site that lists all towers by carrier, I get the address of closest tower and then enter that into another net site I found which will give me compass bearing from my location. That seems to be working well.

Took your advice. Downloaded OS. Is it possible to switch GMS towers on your phone to get a better signal. I have two GMS phones and OS points in different directions on each phone?

I’m guessing the pointer issue is due to it only pointing at cell or Lte signal. I was told some towers only house either cell signal for calls or Lte. If that’s the case the app needs a huge update.

The closes cell tower is straight south. The signal shows straight north. Does not make any sense. I'm trying to use an external antenna to boost the signal or the quality. I was told opensignal only shows 4G coverage but it shows the percentage of 5G, 4G, etc. Why would the signal be stronger away from the closes cell tower?

Clicked on Operator Tab and the only choice was "Show All" and "Apply" There are no distinct Operators such as AT&T, US Cellular, Verizon, etc. like his shows. I keep getting the "Select Operator with the arrow button" & the "Apply" button - but no operators. SOMETIMES I get a message: "Oops. Something went wrong. We can't download information about carriers right now. Please try again later." I did. And I did. And I did. And I quit. ...

Ill be trying the app. As a network tech, I quite often need to find the closest tower for a carrier other than my own.
As a network tech, it makes me laugh seeing the demo on an iPhone. Everyone I know in the field carries Android. This is for a litany of reasons not the least of which is the problems with it failing to join secure WiFi networks and reports that it will share wifi password information with your friends.
Any comments about reliability? Seems people in older versions say your product isn't reliable.

I got one of the home booster kits and performance is great (had just 1 bar without even a 1x, now have 4g between 1 and 3 bars (can stream 1080 videos easy)) but reliability is poor. Once a year it just stops working...BUT so far i just call em and they send me a new unit for free (twice now)

This app does NOT have a dial pointing to your nearest tower. Maybe at one time, but don't expect anything like that in the current app.

Have used this app many times on different devices and it DOES NOT work reliably. Tried it recently AT the tower I receive my signal off of and this app reported signal coming in exactly opposite direction.

I just downloaded OpenSignal app on my Android LG G6 phone. If you click on the cell Tower Tab (The triangle shaped Tab pointing Up at the bottom of the screen shows you the direction of the tower you are using. In my case, it seems to point in different directions, all the time. May be it is because I am inside my house, and they are reflexion of sognal. When I am outside it seems it points more constantly in the direction of the tower I am supposed to be connected to. Is this the correct tower ? I do not know.
Network Cell Info Lite shows me a different tower that I am connected to. Which one is wright ? I do not know.

    Opensignal is useless junk.
Go to opencellid.org and find the nearest tower. The location will not be exact, but it is usually close enough to get you pointed in the right direction. OpencellID.org will find just about any cellid you will encounter, although it tends to show them scattered about the area of the actual tower location. If you go to the exact location plotted on the map, don't expect to find a tower there - but it will typically be clearly visible from there.

shit app. Downloaded it to find out which carier had the strongest signal for my location, but instead the stupid thing keeps showing only my own connected network provider. Which defeats the purpose of my use of the app.

    • @TheAKtracks

That's because your phone will only communicate with your service providers towers, it has nothing to do with the app.
