Marillion still put constantly out new music until today with this line-up meanwhile more than 35 years with the "new" singer Steve Hogarth Incredible stuff, watch the live ones from their Channel! Won't regret it! Cheers😊
Thanks for the reaction! Over 40 years of Marillion to dig into. Don't stop here! "Sugar Mice" with Fish is great, and "Easter" with the current singer Steve Hogarth is also wonderful!
Fish's painting was inspired by 70's one from Genesis Peter Gabriel, as Marillion is a Prog band, in fact one of the Neo Prog trend in the 80s. Fish quit the band in 1988 to ahve a nice solo career until now, as Marillion had its own nice career with another frontman till now. Fish's lyrics are so rich that many of his songs are studies in GB at school. I spent 2 nights with him in the late 90s, as he was a friend of a friend onf mine who was roadie for him. An interesting guy indeed, check his latest album Weltschmerz, a pure masterpiece.
There are actually two songs here from the concept album Misplaced Childhood. If you were impressed with the guitarist check out the entire album sometime. It is mean to be listened to as one multipart piece of an acid trip. This live version doesn't fully give the brilliance of the Gilmoresque quality and tone or Fish's vocals that at times reminds of early Gabriel. Well worth an entire listen.
From ChatGPT: The face paint in this instance was tied to the persona he embodied in Misplaced Childhood, the band's 1985 concept album. The album explores themes of love, loss, innocence, and the passage of time. Fish's theatrical use of face paint and dramatic gestures reflected the emotional depth and narrative of the music. It helped visually amplify the character he portrayed, adding to the concert's immersive atmosphere. In interviews, Fish has mentioned that his face paint and costumes were inspired by performers like Peter Gabriel from Genesis, who also used theatrical presentations to communicate complex stories in live settings. For Marillion, this performance style reinforced their progressive rock identity and created a memorable visual impact for audiences.
At almost six-feet-five he struck a dominant figure, whose choice of face paint, initially to mask his own on-stage insecurities, helped make Marillion stand out yet further, and the band opted for stage effects and early costumes to strengthen their identity. “You had a six-foot-five singer, and I painted my face because I was shy,” explains Fish. “It was a mask that I put on that enabled me to go in front of an audience.
I see that you have done a second reaction to Marillion. Their catalogue is so rich and deep that I hope you keep exploring all the way up to their most recent album, An Hour Before It’s Dark, which is fantastic. ADDITION - Fish’s real name is Derek Dick
Marillion are fantastic. He was heart broken over his girlfriend and his friend gave him LSD to snap him out of it. As he was tripping he came up with the concept album "misplaced childhood" " another album is" thieving magpies"which is also a very good album. Please do more
Fish is for me one of the best vocalists that ever existed. And Marillion one of the best bands. The second song (after Fish hung microphone up) was "Lavender." Two of Marillion's most beloved songs. Fish's real name is Derek Dick.
You should really listen to the entire album. I found the album by accident a few years ago and it's shot up to my top 5 now. It's a concept album where all the songs are one long story and it has this cool ethereal sound
There was a New Wave of British Progressive Rock scene and Marillion were the ones the industry decided were the band to get behind, although arguably Twelfth Night were better. I love them both. Other great bands included IQ, Pallas, Pendragon, Solstice. Many of the bands from that scene are still active (including Marillion) although obviously some have changed line ups.
Peter Gabriel, of Genesis, Michael Stipe, REM, And, David Bowie, All wore Facepaint, similar to FISH. Marillion are still going strong, with a newer Vocalist. Keep Rocking 👍 Ronnie SCOTLAND
Personally, I find Fish's vocal approach to be sub-standard, to be kind, for an internationally renowned band, but I don't want to generate a debate. It's just my taste on a subject where fans can and do hold different opinions. I love the Marillion of Steve Hogarth, but will readily admit its a different band with him writing and singing the newer songs, and people, including old Marillion fans from the Fish era, can reject it as not really their thing anymore. A lot of fans can love both eras. Not me.
Thank you, Mr. Wizard. It really grinds on me that Fish fans insist his version of Marillion was progfabulous while the Hogarth version is pop pablum when it was Fish at the helm when the band was putting out their string of radio hits.
Boy, this took me back😊
Great song choice and reaction 😊

Heard this song one time, in 1985 in high school, and decided on the spot that I’d name my child Kayleigh. A decade later I did just that!
Fish one of the greatest storytellers always nice to attend his concerts even in modern time.

They should react to the Peter Gabriel era of early Genesis with Midnight Special Live. To see how inspiring Genesis was in the 70s. 😎👍🏼

This is from the way-back machine. Haven't thought about them in a while.
Check Neverland (live), one of the best songs I ever heard (and I heard many ...)
Please try some Pendragon from England also
Good.
Try some Fish solo music, Garden of Remembrance is a fantastic song with a beautiful video
Genesis disciple ❤

1985
album version is better though
Kay Leigh is the name of fish's ex girl friend
Ma no, dovevate ascoltare la versione dell'album 😓
They were about as prog as ABBA.
