- My guest today is British journalist Poppy Coburn, an opinion editor at the Telegraph and also at the Conservative Reader. We spoke about Poppy's investigations into the so-called 'charity industrial complex' and what that tells us about how power really operates in contemporary Britain. We also spoke about the emergence of a new Right wing sensibility among zoomers, and how that will manifest itself long-term in politics.
In the extended part of the episode we spoke about the failure of conservatives to contend with Islamism, and what impact the attack of 7th October is likely to have on British politics.

17:32 Power plays in politics
23:55 Zoomers
31:10 Difference between Zoomers and Millennials

I work in a research centre and much of our funding comes from organisations such as the Wellcome Trust and Paul Hamlyn. None of our research leads to any meaningful outcomes (besides 'this topic needs more research') and the allocation of funds is both extremely opaque and increasingly politicised. The kindest thing I can say about what we do is that we are high-status benefit cheats, it's just that no one complains because no one knows we exist!
Thank you for your service.
Many “research” centres function just like this. Essentially just glorified funding skimming operations with little or no actual benefit to anymore but administrators and a handful of employees. The proportion of research organizations with meaningful or useful output is surprisingly low in general, especially in the social sphere.
This always existed, but is now increasingly just large scale activist welfare with even more corruption than the status que waste.
''High -status benefit cheats'' are, of course, the absolute very last thing the UK NEEDS for goodness sake & yet here we are, they're not just alive & kicking but simply flourishing & mostly paid for with hundreds of millions of pounds of taxpayers' money & talk about rubbing our noses in it!!!!
@@Jules-Is-a-Guyand thank you for yours.
I had just finished reading the Running Grave.
Can't believe she's only 23! Very eloquent with great insight, puts a lot of older 'more mature' commentators to shame, makes me excited for the next generation, great episode 👍
Poppy is so lucid here and is a great speaker - a great way with words. Wish she was in government now when we need to move the needle quick.
Great to hear an articulate smart young person that knows how to speak and respond with intelligence and knowledge. Great debate
This whole conversation gives me actual hope!
Really interesting topic!
Hanania covered similar things (but with a focus on the US) in his book "The Origins of Woke"
😺
What was so good about this conversation is that it was 99.9% UK focused & which for me was only a good thing, simply because it's very rare for a conversation like this to do so & what usually only ever happens in 99.9% of these type of discussions is that the talk moves pretty quickly to what is also happening in the US & mainland Europe & of course that is normally perfectly fine, as there can be a lot of commonality across the board, but of course, there are still indigenous UK relevant issues that all too frequently don't get debated.
@@frankbrennan1619 That could very well be Frank but as a denizen of mainland Europe (which is a big place with lots of countries and very different countries at that) I'd certainly like to hear more about what is going on in my country, France. I just can't find discussions of this caliber here. The French have kind of dropped the ball.
@@anomietoponymie2140 And why is it, do you think Anomie, that you can't find discussions of this calibre taking place in France & which does surprise me?
Those evolutionary counter-opposed groups are common in the US too. A guy named LL Nunn started one in the US in the 1890s to support technology development. It has evolved into a social issue think tank and academic institute -- the Telluride House, at Cornell University. I always wondered if poor old LL was turning over in his grave.
Fascinating discussion, ladies; thoroughly informative.
Oh my, my eyes first misread the Zemmour right and I nearly fell off my chair!! Video again 🥰😍🤩
This is an intense (informatically) and interesting conversation, glad to find your channel.
Thanks so much for an interesting discussion. I really enjoyed it.
KEEP up the GREAT work!!!!
It becomes more and more apparent that the coronation of Charles was a missed opportunity for a Conservative Royalist coup detat. England needs a Napoleon.
Great analysis from Poppy
Poppy should write a book called Dissecting the Blob.
Poppy sounds like she's read The Populist Delusion 👍
Louise likely has also.
I knew that all charity was a scam since I was around 17 years old. Nobody could ever tell me what the actual effects were or, if there were any, what it had cost to achieve them.
Full video is back! 😀
Big fans of both of you.
It doesn't matter what the public think, it doesn't make a difference to Westminster.
They are meant to be servants, not tyrants. WTF went wrong.
The masses are thoroughly defanged and the elites aren’t afraid of any meaningful consequences.
A paper both of you might like is "Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups, and Average Citizens" by Martin Gilens.
He looks empirically to what degree it matters who holds what opinion for it to affect policy changes. As you note on the death penalty issue, there are a number of issues where the wishes of average citizens and what is actually implemented by the governments they elect diverges dramatically
Thanks for the reference
Yes, that's a classic.
Worth mentioning that its findings have been disputed by some subsequent papers (and those criticisms in turn disputed by Gilens and Page). There is a bit of a debate about it.
@@jenniferlawrence2701 Hmm, good to know. What papers should I read?
This was a really interesting episode! I have to say im relieved that the zoomer generation is less snowflakey and gushy than us! Otherwise things would get really bad!
Good work
Thanks
Jimmie Saville used his charity work as a shield.
Great discussion.
My only gripe is the constant reference to the false left-right dichotomy and thinking in labels. A difficult habit to break, granted. It keeps most people going around in circles, imagining there is a fundamental difference in Westminster and thus enabling the media to funnel the masses into fake tribalism : the narcissism of "small differences" one might say.
I think you're on the money when you focus more on the corporate element of the hierarchy - which is where policy frankly emanates. In short, the robber barons and moral busy bodies joined forces.
The Gordian Knot of our predicament can't possibly be unraveled unless this is recognised, but from what I hear you're definitely on the right path.
Cheers.
I love joking about the left right false dichotomy with
Conservative think tank: Capitalism rule and small government is great!
Me: so hookers and blow?
Conservative think tank not like that! Can't cut the financing to fake prostitute cops and drug agents!
very cool interview but please explain some of the terms next time. I dont know what cameroonism is and I cant spell it properly to Google it
We live in a post-neoliberal world.
My dear you came back.😢
I missed you so much
I recently saw you on Peter bhogasian show i really enjoyed
She; pretty, and smart and has a british accent , good enough for me.
This video gave me hope for the future of the rightwing
Take no prisoners, show no mercy lads
On we go
God I love this dialogue! Thanks. Just want to point out the essential reality of the 'third sector' in stable and progressive societies, and the fact that it is banned in dictatorships and theocratic (muslim) societies. The problem seems to be a colonisation of certain third sector groups which are dubiously called Charities because they are campaigning groups by this wave of Woke activists bent on decolonising the West. They have found the soft underbelly of society, and both business leaders and political leaders have grossly underestimated the primal power of civil society, which in any humane society takes precedence over commerce and the state. But these millennials have injected politics into that free space of human values. The Zooners will have to change that. Do Not Blame or Dismantle Civil Society! In doing so you will undermine the very foundations of society!
Nice to hear Pareto and Mosca mentioned.
Totes.
23:30 LP makes an interesting point here, I'm not sure whether I agree or not. I've tried to criticize her for indulging what many would consider soft authoritarian tendencies, but from a broader perspective, it's possible that everyone has become increasingly authoritarian as our politics have become more tribal. Not to be pedantic, but I probably don't agree, mainly because the implied definition of "authoritarian" in this context seems too robust, or the connotation too broad. I think it might make more sense to argue that Conservatives have become more authoritarian, Libertarians have become more anarchic, Liberals have become more Machiavellian, everyone's leaning on a dumb caricature of what are supposed to be their politics, we obviously have an unhealthy sociopolitical mainstream culture.
Well firstly, we no longer have liberals in the UK, but instead only very rich & very posh '' illiberal liberals'' with their luxury belief systems bestowed by their wealth & educational status & there is literally nobody more less tolerant & authoritarian than this particular cohort & secondly there's no true & proper ''old'' left or right anymore & as completely evidenced by both the main two political Parties merging into an undistinguishable oneness when it comes to nearly all economic & social issues, although we do have the total mendacious absurdity of both the extreme hard far left & the very rich & very posh illiberal liberals continually castigating the current so - called Conservative government for being ''far right'' for goodness sake!!!!
@@frankbrennan1619 All Louise, Poppy and lots of ppl are talking abt is mainstream Cronyism. Of course I basically agree with what they're saying, but it's the wrong conversation. Our political system is broken now, and parties don't represent constituents, nor anything at all, and are for sale, (same in US) are very redundant observations.
We should be talking abt what comes after this, what kind of governance we should have, or parties, or juxtaposed beliefs, for when reform takes place. A lot of what I'm hearing is, the mainstream is cynical so let's be cynical, abandons principles and discourse so let's do that, when all else fails ppl are still competency-based, so let's be ruthlessly competency-based. Soft authoritarianism is taking over, so let's completely lean into that. Why do they have to go along with this? Why is the way they think shaped by the broken mainstream? Why can't they hold the line, and maintain their principles in the underground, and wait for the day? Louise's latest album featuring Poppy thus has too much of a mainstream formulaic pop aesthetic, 2/4 stars.
I often mock it with
Holy man of the right wing: There can't be sex workers, muh Christian purity morality!
Sex negative leftist woman: There can't be sex workers, it is all exploitation!\
Then they form an unholy allaince.
@25:05 I agree with her. Women are very good chameleons, for survival reasons. But I don’t know about modern girls being likely to flip very strongly in this climate. I think we tend to have friend groups with different types of people that give a certain exposure to the needs and feelings of different demographics. So idk. There are different influences at play. 🤔
A very interesting young lady.
Nothing is what it seems, and, everything is exactly what it looks like.
Its good job powerful corporations and multinationals dont have any influence on government then we would be in trouble. Oh hang on a minute.
I call it "Oligarchy of the elite donor class."
I'm trying to find the link to the Owen Jones' referenced in the video but can't find it. Does anyone have a link?

None of these new dissident political movements in the west will have any substantial impact, whether it be the various flavors of right wing dissidents or the socialist left. The UK is a declining client state of a declining global hegemon and its politics will reflect that for the forseeable future. Managed decline necessitates managers, and as of right now the managerial class is socially progressive liberals. The economy of every western country will continue to grow at slower and slower rates as growth is no longer driven by large scale market expansion but increased financialization and commodification of the few not yet commodified aspects of life.
Instead of contracting social housing why shouldn’t it be expanded. The real issue in housing is the town planning act. If there was a swell in new construction the amount of social housing increases whilst simultaneously reducing house prices and thus rents. It would also create more jobs and be a useful boost to the economy.
With the imminent collapse of globalisation and most integrated economies globally. Couple this with automation, most young or even older professionals are really going to struggle way more than they are now.
I am noticing that a few women are gradually starting to get close the basic reason the male inflencers are so appealing.
The likes of Tate look like they are having fun. This is so appealing for men. But women generally don't get this.
Video!
17:10 I would be more receptive to what Louise is saying here, if I didn't already know that her proposed alternative is a next-level Nanny State.
Do you have some links to illustrate this?
@@mirkomeyerhoff2700 Lol trust me, Louise absolutely insists that everything icky must be banned, and bans must be enforced by a friendly Police State.

@ 6:55 Thi system is not new.
A straight line can be drawn from such groups, through "Community Leaders" of Multiculturalism back to the Imperial administration of the British Raj in India.
It is almost a template for nepotism, corruption and for tiny groups to wield disproportionate power.
A moustachioed Wolverhampton MP of the late 1960s drew attention to this, but what was probably his most important warning was overshadowed by some of his more apocalyptic statements.
In the US, these are Super PACs.
NGOs like Jewish Philanthropies and Catholic Charities do the legalese for the southern border staying open.

Maybe we could just call them "Modcons" a mash up of modern and conservative lol. Instead of the "New Right" I mean.
We already have a term for that. Neocons.
@@Locke350 Neocon is pretty synonymous with warmonger which the young New Right is not.
I call the neocon "Capitalism, unless sex and drugs."
Hi Louise, Audio note: I notice your mic’ing setup is picking up an awful lot of mouth noises (plosives, sniffs, ‘esses’, lip smacking, etc.)
Take a look whether your mic has a pop filter - this will greatly improve the listening experience for listeners.
Alternately - It may improve things to play around with mic position in relation to your mouth. Even a small adjustment in mic position can make a big difference.
Good luck!
You look beautiful Louise 😄
Self Esteem is from Rotherham, so middle class Londoners at least know someone from there. But she's not going to mention it because bye bye music career...
Edit: says she's from Rotherham
Bring jobs back to the UK .... mines, factories, sweat shops, farming etc.... most problems will sort themselves out. All this talk of the new age woke left, right whatever is just a consequence of people not having life fulfilment.
My old GenX ears just couldn't handle all the "likes" in this conversation. Like, literally, every sentence, like contained a like.
Also Gen X. Try as I might I can't take in what she's saying.
She is way wrong about liberalism and foreign aid/foreign investment.
Ever heard of the British Empire? What does she think that was? :D
i am genuinely not trying to be funny or edgy or whatever. But has anyone actually read the party platform of a certain mid century german party?
if you are done being post-liberal atleast read it and we can obviously do without certain outcomes etc etc but you should atleast read their platform i think people will find it shockingly apt
if the german is too spicy then check out post civil-war spain
Holy shit.
Yes, I have. Strasserism is better than the Austrian Painter, though.
Nice one Braverman you've got people happily promoting the Nazi's manifesto on UA-cam comments

@@RCCarDudeWell said.
Ariel Pink is looming over your shoulder Poppy, let's be friends.
Louise perry you keep bringing in people from the right on your podcast. The fact that you don't interview people from the left lessens your credibility and makes you look biased. A lot of feminists like myself wanted to listen to you because you would talk about things that the left wasn't willing to while at the same time not outright support right wing conservative views.
