- Is cache "cash" or "cashay"? Anyway, here I take a look at the all new 2020 version of the Nintendo Super Mario Brothers G&W.
Let's strip it down and have a quick look to see what it's like on the inside.
Hope you enjoy!

I still have the classic blue Mario game-watch from the 80's, this vid threw me all the way back to my childhood. 🍄
I like the way it's set up inside - it seems like a throwback to back when our electronics weren't designed to be immediately thrown away if you had any issues.
I know what you mean! 👍
@@StezStixFix I found this video because I was searching for teardown videos that actually showed the front side. I have one of the original Game and Watches, so I was curious.
This may be a toy in both senses of the word, but at least it doesn't try to reinvent everything we liked about the original, unlike the TurboGraphix Mini....
Agreed, It's nice to see it remain true to the original.
@@StezStixFix I think I'm the only person who likes the fact they didn't try going full custom on the inside, since this means they can crank out other releases easily (like Zelda next year), and it gives people so inclined an opportunity to load other games into these once they figure out how to open up the firmware.
been waiting for the teardown thanks! thumbs up!!!
No worries, thanks Kyfeam! 👍
Thnx a lot man for bid, it was interesting to know what’s inside this new plastic little box from Nintendo 👍
Thanks man 👍
dude how did you hit 50k subs so fast. I swear you were at 45k like….3 days ago? amazing and congrats
Good Stuff! Thanks for sharing this info!
Thanks Rad! 😊
Yet another absolutely amazing video.
Much appreciated, Bird! 🙂
@@StezStixFix no problem I'm happy to support you
If I see this correctly, the USB Connector has only traces connected to get power to the board - no data.
Hacking should be possible with the JTAG port but not without opening the Device.
Yes, I think you're right. I would like to have another look and see if I can follow the traces, but I only remember seeing 2 or 3 coming off the port. Undoubtedly deliberate to minimise hacking, like you say. But, I'm sure someone will find a way!
@@StezStixFix Well apparently someone hacked it already yesterday with the Pins traced from the Processor to the JTAG-Like internal connection.
@@sh4dowde already lol gotta love it
stacksmashing on Twitter, he also made a Video: ua-cam.com/video/Rsi8p5gbaps/v-deo.html
wow seeing these takes me back to being in infants school lol
Was hoping to see what model the screen was as I saw someone talking about cracking theirs. Otherwise great video, thank you.
Thanks! 😊 As far as I know, the screen is 2.4" and made by Innolux. Not sure of the model number 🤔
I know that this system is just emulating 3 games but it is still impressive hiw nintendo were able to cram all that tech into a small game and watch shell
Yes, it certainly is. Its nicely built too, feels very solid and you can tell the quality is good.
they could cram a lot more, there's raspberry pi's that are smaller than this that can hold a lot, but it's obvious they got the cheapest/minimal hardware to efficiently do what it needs.
1:33 they forgat the stand :( how you suppose to watch the watch :D LoL
Yeah, that did surprise me. I would've thought that would have been something they would put in.
Maybe they didn’t want people laughing at it because it would probably be the same style as the Nintendo switch kickstand
Yeah, not really nice if you want to display it somewhere, or even use it as a clock.
There was a similar handheld console that had little controllers i had one, cant say ive seen anyone with one since was similar to this one only it had two chorded controllers
I'm impressed with how elaborately built this is for its price point! I wasn't expecting it to have so many discrete components, and the replaceable battery is great.
Yeah, it's nice that it has a few components from the Switch inside. The speaker is the same too. For the price, like you say, it is very nicely put together.
@@StezStixFix now we can scour eBay and Craig's List for cheap drift-afflicted joy cons to keep around for spare batteries for our Game & Watch! ;)
😁 Yep!
I’d like to see if the scream could be used for other things like mini computers etc
I didn’t know you had a g&w original mario bros game systemwith you
It actually belongs to a friend, but I think he's forgotten about it! 🤫 I fixed it for him and I've conveniently not returned it yet 🤣
Thanks for doing this tear down, I picked up mine yesterday too but my tri-wing's were packed away in my Nintendo box.. I am actually surprised (although i shouldn't have been) that this is just using an emulator and not a custom SoC.. Theoretically this is totally hackable but I don't have enough knowledge to do that myself. Having the screen and an off the shelf arm processor could be really interesting for Nintendo fan boys like me
Yep, apparently it's already been hacked, although I'm yet to see exactly how. I'm sure details will filter through in the coming days.
@@StezStixFix Oh cool.. Yeah reading the rom or getting specs (drivers) to run screen is all ya need. Then should be able to reburn ROM but the better mod would be attaching extra storage. It wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo used an open source emulator but who knows.
BTW that first chip in ya video that you didn't recognise was the power control chip for battery etc
Yeah, I thought it was the power chip when I was editing the vid. It's right next to the battery, but I couldn't find any information about the chip online. Hopefully they have improved the stability and it won't fail if you plug a standard USB cable in!
2:23
You didn't grab the schroom...
Sacrilege!!
You wouldn't have died 20 seconds later..
To add to this, This Does Not Compute's teardown revealed the screen to be made by InnoLux, and most likely a 2.4" 480x320 unit.
Good info, thank you! 👍
1st class video to watch thank you take care kind regards from me kenneth
I just don't understand why nintendo didn't bother to design this game and watch super mario bros. after the actual game and watch version of the game or at least include the game and watch SMB rather than that ball game. i think the box for the original game and watch version looks nicer as well. kudos for having the original, complete with the box.
Yeah, I totally agree. Seems like a wasted opportunity really. 😔
Cool video and usb-c is great.
Yeah, it's nice to have the USB C port. Hopefully less chance of it getting damaged, but we'll see how long they last...
@@StezStixFix we will see in the future
Awesome
Thanks Geek! 😊
Darn, you didn't lift the membranes. I'm wondering if it's possible to replace the A/B buttons with plastic instead of their rubber. If they're attached to the membrane, no go.
Aagh, sorry! Ill be taking it apart again
soon no doubt. I'll take a look 👀
This Does Not Compute did in his video
Did you get the Zelda one too?
I was expecting one big epoxy blob.
🤣 It was very close to that!
I got my one the screen broke can you give a tutorial for that?
How do you disconnect the. Battery do you lift up or pull it out I'm confused
It lifts straight up from the board. Just needs a bit of pressure.
Such a pity it doesn’t have a kick stand. I ordered mine with the intention of using it as a bedside alarm clock.
I agree. Seems odd to exclude it, and I can't imagine it saved them more than a few pennies per item in manufacturing costs. I'm guessing some kind of aftermarket stand will come out for it. I think the screen times out at about 3 minutes though, and i couldn't find an option to change that, so to use it as a clock, you would have to press a button to wake it, to see the time! 🤷
Actually, I wonder if the screen stays on if it's plugged in though. I'll give it a try!
I wonder what it can actually do. Can it hold more games? Run 16 bit games?
Yeah, would be good to know. In theory it should be able to handle more. Keep an eye on stack smashing on twitter, he is almost there with breaking in to it I think.
I literally in the past 5 minutes just bought one from fleabay and then I see this video 😁 I paid $75aud for mine, sealed in the original box 😎👍
Speakers are also the same
For switch
Yep, well spotted! 👍
thanks for taking it apart! :) I wonder is there a way to put more NES ROMs inside, it is emulator right ?
Yeah, I'm pretty sure there will be. It has been hacked already, apparently. But I'm yet to see anyone explain how, so I'm sure it'll be out there in a few days!
@@StezStixFix NICEEEE ! :) I am keen to see this done ! Thanks!
I'll definitely be giving it a go!
@@StezStixFix 9:15 I am guessing that those empty holes near the soldered speaker wires are for JTAG for updating or modifying the software :)
Yeah, thats what I thought, although I'm not 100% sure. They are definitely test pads of some description, so you're probably right! 🙂
Hold the "A" button on the clock screen 😉
Hm the speaker in it is the same as the Nintendo switches too, interesting
Yep, well spotted! Looks like it will be easy to replace parts if any fail! 👍
This is what you came for 4:20
Oh by the way, like when you compare it to the original.
I got a good collection going and the Super Mario Bros was the first one i got to start my collection.
It would have been cool if they put that in as the third game instead of ball, but I assume it would probably be more work to reprogram that game in, than ball.
I mean, technically they just got all the Game & Watch games emulated on MAME, but that would mean you'd need to program an emulator if you went that route.
Yeah, it would have been a nice touch. Will be good to see how much capacity there is once it's been fully hacked. Keeping an eye on stack smashing on twitter. Looks like he's managed to dump the flash, so progress.
@@StezStixFix I've seen. It seems like there's not much capacity. 8MB I believe. Nintendo used really trimmed down hardware for this, to save money probably.
We could probably still put NES roms on it though.
8mb sure isn't a lot, but again that's probably deliberate.
@@StezStixFix It's still big enough for a few NES roms. I think the largest official games only go up to 1MB.
Just depends on how much room everything else takes, as well.
Thank you for the video. Does it have components made in Japan or they are all made in China/other Countries?
Thanks Alex. I didn't spot anything made in Japan. The Switch components in it are primarily made in China, although they have moved some production to Vietnam. The screen is made by Innolux, which I believe is in Taiwan.
@@StezStixFix thank you very much for your kind and detailed answer
@@StezStixFix What do you mean with "Switch components"? Does the Game & Watch share some components with the Nintendo Switch or is it the name of some kind of electronic parts?
The battery is the same as in the Nintendo Switch Joycon, the USB c port and the speaker are identical to the ones in the Nintendo Switch console. 👍
@@StezStixFix thanks again
Much better quality than the Chinese version. The game will glitch in those, and the controls are not consistent
It ain't cashay, that's for sure!!
Well, It is in my house.
@@StezStixFix dictionary.cambridge.org/us/pronunciation/english/cache
🤣 I'll let my house know.
mine broke, it screen is busted, buying a new one of amazon because they still have them (edit: i had it for 4 days, buying a case for it to be more careful)
Yeah, they are still available. I don't think they were as popular as Nintendo thought they would be. But, good news that you can get a new one! 👍
@@StezStixFix I found out because I got the g&w (the one that broke) at target in April 2nd
the screen man, take a look at the screen
It's an Innolux ZJ024NA-17A 👍
@@StezStixFix thank you, I found it a bit ago though through trials and tribulations, my screen broke, but didn't to fork of 40 something to repair it, thought I'd just plug in a new screen, couldn't figure out how to purchase one from Innolux an caved and bought one from Walmart.
@@joshuadavis785 Yeah, I think you can pick them up from China through Aliexpress or similar, but haven't bought one myself.
@@StezStixFix thanks
Hmmmm
Well stack smashing has already hacked it!
Wow, really? will have to check that out!
@@StezStixFix Google it, it's not on his youtube channel yet though.
all ready been hacked to play rom
Yeah, I believe so. Will be giving it a go once details are out. 👍
Dude mine won’t hold a charge. It sucks.
Really? First time I've heard that happen so far. Could be a dodgy battery. You can try and pick up a replacement out of a Switch Joycon and swap it out, should be fairly straightforward. 👍
@@StezStixFix that’s my exact plan my friend. To Nintendo’s credit there is zero info on that happening too. I figure it’s a battery because when plugged in it works. It just won’t hold the dang charge.
Awesome. Let me know how it goes! 💪
@@StezStixFix will do! I have a tiny tech flat head screw driver. Hopefully I can open it up with that instead of buying a new whatever bit that is
@@simplyshane6477 You may be able to, it's a Triwing bit. If necessary, you can pick them up pretty cheap from eBay!
Finally I´m the first!
Haha, yes you are! 😁
try modding it 😀
Like number 69 noice! Lol
Noice! 😆👍
Pronounced the same as cash.
😊 thanks! I'll remember for next time! 👍
I can't get over something that small having a 32 bit processor :)
I know! It's pretty crazy 😊
@Crest - BarcrestPlayers I found one, the NXP MC68HC812A4 MCU - not sure what that would be used in though.
