  • Doing intensive reading is another way to increase your vocabulary base, improve your language structures, get better reading skills, and perhaps learn something new! It is the companion to extensive reading, which is much easier and faster, but greater in quantity.

      You can do either, or! If you want to really focus on pronunciation and voice inflection, reading aloud is a good idea. But keep in mind that if you focus on pronunciation, you will not be able to also focus on the meaning as well if you are doing intensive reading. Our brains are not designed for multi-tasking.

      @@doveimillennium9001 It depends on your goals. If you want to be able to read and write Japanese, it will be slower, but better in the long run if you learn kana and kanji. If you only want/need to learn to speak, then it is faster in the short term to use roman letters... (but you will have to take a step back later to learn reading and writing).

    Hi, Morksensei! How are you today? Can you explain to me the meaning of the last part of this sentence? "For a moment, a phrase tried to take shape in my mouth, and my lips parted like a dumb man's, as though there was more struggling upon them than a wisp of startled air." Thanks. Ch.

    • @morksensei
      @morksensei  2 роки тому +1

      ”...as though there was more struggling upon them than a wisp of startled air." - very literary! Basically, the narrator is saying that it's just air around his lips; his difficulty speaking does not have so much to do with the physics of pronouncing the word. But he/she imagines it must be more than the air (which is surprised (startled) that he/she cannot speak) because it is hard to account for the difficulty in speaking. Does that make sense?

    1). According to Brown (1989), Intensive reading “pays attention to grammatical forms, discourse markers, and other surface structure details for the purpose of understanding literal meaning, implications, rhetorical relationships, and the like." He draws an analogy to intensive reading as a "zoom lens" strategy.
    2). Long and Richards (1987) stated that “Intensive reading is a ‘detailed in-class’ analysis, led by the teacher, of vocabulary and grammar points in a short passage
    3). According to Scrivener (1994) “during Intensive reading activities, the readers closely read a short text, intending to gain an understanding of as much as detail as possible”.
    Question: Can someone assist me with the number of pages of these quotes stated by the above-mentioned scholars from their respective works?! Thank you in advance!

    • @morksensei
      @morksensei  2 роки тому +1

      #2 might be from: Long, Michael & Richards, J. (1987) Methodology in TESOL, Boston: Heinle & Heinle Publishers. #3 looks like it might be from here: Scrivener, J. (1994). Learning teaching. Oxford: Heinemann Publishers (Oxford) Ltd. #1 has stumped me....It could be from an old edition of Douglas Brown's "Teaching by Principles"... It was shocking to me to find how many people online make a reference to to Brown's quote without also giving the full reference! I am not surprised that you are frustrated, Fisnik!

    When I am watching an english video non-stop while reading english subtitles, Am I doing extensive reading and listening at the same time?

    • @morksensei
      @morksensei  Місяць тому

      Interesting question! If the level of English is relatively easy for you (and it should be, for any extensive reading or listening!), then having subtitles (assuming they are correct and well-synched) will probably make listening easier for you if you want to improve your listening, or reading easier for you if you want to improve your reading. There is nothing wrong with this approach, but I would suggest that you focus on ONE. If you want to improve your listening, ideally you don't want to have to read subtitles to understand, right? If you cannot understand without the subtitles, then the level of listening might be a little too difficult to be called "extensive" listening. Does this make sense?

  • @alwaysuseless

    I think this would be a better video without the background music. It's distracting, and because it's distracting, it's also annoying. The video on extensive reading didn't have background music. Consequently, it was much easier to focus on what you were telling us. I assume you can't edit out the music. So I hope at some point you will simply redo the video. Thanks.

    For intensive reading, I prefer to use audio. I like it very much. Now we can easily find the necessary material for such work. I recommend using such an "algorithm". I found it on the Internet. A Proven 6-Step Approach for Improving English Listening(and Reading) Skills
    ✅ Step 1: Listen to the audio without reading the transcript
    I suggest only taking a small part of the listening and working with that. The objective of this step is to check how much you understand just by listening without reading the transcript or subtitles. Repeat up to two to three times while taking notes.
    ✅ Step 2: Read the transcript
    In this step, you are not going to listen. Rather, read the transcript of the audio you have just listened to. At your own pace, check how much you understood. Look up and take notes of new words and highlight the parts which you understand while reading but didn’t understand while listening.
    ✅ Step 3: Listen using the transcript
    Next, listen to the audio again while reading the transcript. The point of this step is to focus on the parts which you didn’t understand and evaluate why you didn’t understand. Was it because of the vocabulary? Was it the speed, the accent, or the connected speech? In this step, you’ll be playing, pausing, rewinding then playing back again. Your aim is to identify what you didn’t get when listening to it, and understand why you didn’t understand it.
    ✅ Step 4: Listen without the transcript again
    Now you are going to listen back again without the transcript. The reason for this is that you want to identify how much you understand now that you have completed steps two and three. What can you understand now that you couldn’t in step one? Are there any parts that you are still struggling to get? Identify why not. On the whole, you should understand the audio a lot better than the first time around.
    ✅ Step 5: Take note of the new vocabulary and review it
    An important factor in improving listening is to increase your vocabulary. The more vocabulary you have, the greater understanding you will have. Store the new vocabulary and review it. Choose a time in the day and stick to that time every day so it becomes a habit.
    ✅ Step 6: Listen Back to the audio 2 or 3 days later.
    Finally, after a couple of days, listen again to the audio. The reason for this is that your brain needs a bit of time to process the new information, and it is also a reviewing exercise that helps you remember new vocabulary and language. It’s also a good way of measuring your development which helps to boost confidence.
