Oh also meant to say - THANK YOU for repping both intensive & extensive reading. I feel like sometimes they're pitted against each other, but I think they both have such great benefits for different situations. I love both, it just depends!

In school and university they forced us to write down words even with extensive reading. But when I stopped doing that and just looked up the meaning of the word every time, even if it was the same one, I remembered so many words! Authors tend to repeat many words throughout the book many times. Each time you look them up helps you remember

I reread Harry Potter in English. I don’t know how much I would like in Brazilian Portuguese (I’m learning now) but reading in the original version was amazing !
Dobby in Polish (my native language) is called Zgredek. Reading in English was definitely great for me as a fan of HP and for my language journey :)

Im reading this book in Portuguese too. (PS. and have the Podcast online) Because book for learn Portuguese in Czech are horrible. I used Assimil in German, Colloquial in English and then Schwedisch mit System in German. Now I have book Portuguese Em direto /but for B2. - it is too difficult/ I hope HP help to overcome the level B1
Do you have any recommendacion - can be in German, Spanish or in English?

@@janamelicharova7172 I understand your situation! It’s impossible to find books to study Portuguese in Polish, especially for Brazilian version. I’m lucky enough to live in Brazil :) I’m here for one year, and of course the lockdown and being at home slowed down my progress.
I use Gramática Ativa 1 and d 2 for grammar. I use Brazilian version, but there is also European. I like to use also ‘Falar...ler...escrever...Português’. I have a student book and a workbook. The student book itself has a lot of exercises and audio! Titles I mentioned are just in Portuguese. Teach Yourself Complete Portuguese is in English. It’s rather easy, and I guess you would be board since you are at B1 level. If you want to can find me on Instagram: aldona.anna.yt There we could exchange emails, and I could send you some pdf I have for studying Portuguese. Beijos 😽

For extensive reading, I just keep switching the content so more common things tend to stick faster, mainly acquiring "raw" vocabulary through mass exposure. At the moment I do this for Sorbian and it is a really fast approach (I maxed out at ~1000 lexical items per week when learning Russian, this week I did ~500 for Sorbian) but it's very exhausting. I think of it as a parallelized approach, learning lots of vocabulary by learning words somewhat slower but in mass and through mutual relationships. Each new text is repetition for old texts, kind of recursive.
For intensive reading, I read few texts as thoroughly as I can, i.e. over and over, even beyond memorization, really appreciating single words, grammar intuition, atmosphere, sentence topology etc. Currently that is kind of what I do for Latin, reading De Bello Gallico over and over (one chapter I already read and a new one each day if I manage) and Saxon.
For both I use LWT which allows me to add translations and other info for difficult words and automatically create flashcards for them.
I view both techniques as to points on a spectrum and try to slowly develop from extensive to intensive when actively learning.
My book recommendation would be "Jäö oder wie ein Franzose auszog in Hannover das 'raanste' Deutsch zu lernen".

I think Harry potter books are great tools for learning foreign languages and I think a good approach is to slog through the book intensively looking up a lot of words and then reread the book extensively lookng up very few words. The extensive review solidifies new vocab.

I think I might try what you talked about, with the intensive reading for vocab for a bit, followed by extensive reading:) even if it's just a page a day!

Graded readings are wonderful!! There are so many editorial houses that publish a huge variety of graded readings directly for language learners. I absolutely love these. Specially for a2 to b2 levels, they generally include audiobooks to learn pronunciation as you go reading, some glossary pages, sometimes a few exercises... Check black cat-cideb, at least for italian they are wonderful. I use them for my intensive reading, as i read the chapters again and again, making notes on any prhases that seem interesting and new vocab and so on. Tjey are also short enough to work though them quickly so that you are still encouraged to read them again and again, but long enough that you're actually interested in the development of the story. For my extensive reading i DO read Harry Potter. But it may be just because I love it so much! For italian I also recommend "io non ho paura" and "in altre parole". I chose this way of studying before I knew there was a name to this. Just to point out how a natural approach this is!! Of course everyone should accompany this with working the grammar. And finally this may be just for me, but I've noticed i get better results if i work in only a language at a time.

I appreciate that, when introducing the idea of reading content at the appropriate level for your abilities, you acknowledge the fact that reading an appropriate level book might simply be unpalatable because of the subject matter. There were so many times where I've encountered people giving advice like "go watch Peppa Pig in your target language", or something along those lines, where I've immediately been turned off from the approach because I simply did not care to read the suggested content. What I did end up doing to get over this hurdle is also not something I would generally recommend to everyone, but it worked out for me: I picked up the first book I wanted to read that I felt would be fairly easy but also wouldn't make my eyes glaze over and I just slogged through it. It was a lot of work and at first I felt very discouraged, but, at the same time, I could see that I was making progress quickly so I stuck with it. It took me 1-2 books before this became bearable and I felt like I could make progress at a somewhat reasonable speed. Once you get to that point where finding compelling and comprehensible text is actually possible, I feel like the rest is just a matter of sinking hours into it.

Thankfully I can find tons of audiobooks right here on UA-cam and then listen to it as I do my chores or am headed somewhere and that helps me also to improve my listening skills in that language along with learning new vocab and learning something useful since most of books I listen to are about self-improvement or my personal interest like astronomy or history

I started my German with a two volume (each 1000 pages) book of (1001 Nacht). I had read it in English as Arabian Nights during the years I was learning English.
It started it out mostly as an intensive reading. After I solved the main grammar issues I kept at a semi intensive way.
But recently I'm doing it as an extensive way. It's much better since I have more chances to see the same words a few pages later in other contexts. They seem to light up in my head as I see them more than once in the same sitting.
At some point I plan to start reading the same books in Arabic. I ordered it in 6 volumes. And I have some basic knowledge in Arabic. It'll be a lot of fun. But in German I'm only on page 760. I have 1300 more pages to go. This has been going on for 3 years. I wasted some time with trying other ways of learning through other un-interesting books. Always fell back on this one. I also listen a lot, and recently while shadowing.

Reading was the biggest contribuition to my English learning. I did have the advantage of English having many common vocabulary with Latin though. I've read mostly articles and things in the internet, but no novels to date. Right now I'm reading the bible in Russian, and surprisingly enough the vocab is not too difficult. Slapped a bunch of monolingual dictionaries on there (the chances are bigger to understand at least one definition) and just download ebooks that are interesting. You can also look to see if there are any sites that specifically sell Portuguese books, I've found a few sites like that for my target languages! If you have a smartphone/ereader/ipad you could also look for e-books in Portuguese, I find it a lot easier to get PDFs or ebook versions of many books instead of tracking down a physical copy.

I don't like picking favorites, so I'll give a recommendation for a book I loved reading recently: What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours by Helen Oyeyemi (English).
Prior to December 2020, I had only tried intensive reading in my target language, using picture books, articles, and song lyrics. In December, I read two books for Spanish learners and a graphic novel. Then in January I read another book of short stories for learners. Now I am reading short stories with parallel text. I love reading in English and being able to read in Spanish is thrilling.
However, I can never decide whether I want to do extensive or intensive reading. I always read aloud, but I don't think that matters in terms of extensive vs intensive. I have a hard time continuing without looking up every word. Thanks to your video, I now realize that I need to choose different techniques for different sources and stick with it. That way I can get the benefits of both extensive and intensive reading.
I'm planning on starting my first novel next month, so I can go into it with the plan to read extensively.

I don't know any Indonesian so I can't unfortunately, if anyone ever wants to contribute them I'd be happy to add them.
For now slowing the video speed down and using English subtitles may help a little.
      Sorry!
