    It’s a constant source of irony to me that Hollywood, in its hypocrisy, will praise a woman for being strong and denounce a man as toxic when the actions of both were exactly the same.

    • @zztopz7090
      @zztopz7090 4 роки тому +43

      Their actions are not the same. Strong men of the past were flawed, but decent, while strong women today are angry bullies.

    • @gfwinn
      @gfwinn 4 роки тому +40

      @@zztopz7090 I was attempting to highlight the fact that certain hypocritical people will say that some actions are "strong" or "empowering" if a female character does it, but will denounce those same actions as "toxic" or "problematic" if done by a male character.
      Here's a perfect example: I'll give you a scenario with all context clues regarding sex of the characters removed any you'll try to figure out if they're the actions of a "toxic male" or a "strong woman."
      Character A meets Character B. Character B makes a few reasonable and non threatening statements to character A about their appearance, probably intended to defuse the situation with humor. Character A assaults Character B, steals from them, and leaves with no apparent repercussions. Is Character A a "Strong Woman" or a "Toxic Male?"
      The correct answer is yes. Those are both story beats that perfectly mirror each other taken from the 1984 Sci-fi / Horror classic The Terminator (The scene where he beats up three street thugs and takes their clothes) and a deleted scene from the 2019 film Captain Marvel (where she crushes a biker's hand for telling her that she should smile more, and steals his motorcycle).

      @Bryan the Figure man I don't disagree with your initial statement at least. I'm talking about those in charge of media who know this isn't how the world actually works or should even work yet are attempting to brainwash people into accepting it. Those are the hypocrites to which I'm referring. They want a populace that doesn't think for themselves and will simply accept any narrative given to them. Problem is people are pattern seeking creatures by nature and if the patterns they see aren't reflective of the narrative BS being foisted upon them they have only two options go further down the rabbit hole of cognitive dissonance, or realize they're being lied to.

    Picard is on a deperate mission to reach a girl before the Rolumans find her.. while the Romulans know exactly who she is, where she is, heck she's on a Romulan borg ship sleeping with a Roluman spy. but hey, Picard needs to go do some chocobo farming before the Romulans find her. Great plot.

      I, for one, hope that SOMEONE will pull the franchise out of the shitter. Just like Star Wars does, they need, dare I say _require,_ their own Kevin Feige; someone who has the necessary vision that these kind of shows depend on to have a consistent and, more importantly, _lasting_ impact. Both Disney and Kurtzman/JJ/Bad Robot/Secret Hideout/et al have acted like their respective productions were essentially MadLibs, where they just inserted names and jargon into scripts that are basically simply Young Adult drivel (emphasis on the simple). I just don't see people revisiting these shows, either rewatching them or doing "deep dive" retrospectives on the issues they tackled, years from now, let alone decades. Yeah, I will say it, the old shows are dated and many episodes where they tried to make a point really failed. But there is, or at this point was, a heart and soul to them, not to mention some amazing performances by several of the actors that is completely missing from what is on display today.
      And I know this might already have been said, but while I'm all for "strong female characters" Disney (i.e. Kathleen Kennedy) and Kurtzman - N - Crew have done a HORRIBLE job of portraying them. Either A) they surround the female lead with overly dumb or over the top chauvinistic (or both) men or B) they basically put her in roles where a 250 pound man would normally be comfortable, not to mention actually believable. Or in some cases both, like Michael Burnham. It's sad, really, because just like boys, girls need good role models, too, but they won't find them in today's Trek. Instead, they get someone who is belligerent, obstinate, violent at times, and apparently just does whatever the fuck they want regardless of whatever kind of command structure is in place. Oh, wait a minute. They are routinely dropping F-bombs now, aren't they. Well, put that point up on the bit board, too, I guess. :/
      You know, Trek _used_ to inspire kids to become astrophysicists, doctors, scientists, and, yes, even engineers (thanks, Scotty!), but now Trek actually makes you _more_ dumb when you watch it. They are making the same mistake the movies ran into. That being trying to turn it into action shlock. Yes, Trek can certainly have plenty of action and fights/battles in it, but it just isn't made for that. It wouldn't have lasted as long as it has it it had been that way in the beginning.
      Sorry this comment got so long. It's just that there's so much wrong and when I get going... ;) I actually told my friends that I would avoid watching anything about Trek until I heard that it was finally OK to watch again, because I realized that it's actually starting to make me a very bitter person, which is something entirely very "un-Trek-like". :/ However, I just can't resist The Drinker's charms. :P In the meantime, I guess there's still The Orville. ;) I now leave you to get back to whatever it was you were doing. ;) Take care, all! :)
      EDIT: Small grammar FU fixed

      If you want swords in your sci-fi, you need to set things up so it's reasonable to use them.
      Oh, everyone uses energy weapons and you can make 'scattering fields' that negate them beyond point blank so people use melee weapons/bayonets? Okay I can buy that.
      Oh, no one has developed energy weapons yet and kinetic negating shielding is cheap and effective so people often have to fight hand to hand to get a slow blade through the shield? Sure I can roll with that.
      Oh advanced nano-tech ubiquitous in the atmosphere sucks up any energy beyond a given density to the point that gunpowder and steam engines can't work here? Guess that explains the bows/crossbows and melee weaponry being common.
      Oh, personal cloaking/jamming tech has gotten so far ahead that it's essentially impossible to spot your enemy outside of melee range if they don't shoot first, so doctrine is to melee 95% of the time to not get instantly shot by your enemy? We can work with this.
      But you absolutely NEED to have a justification.

      Kurtzman has a very limited vision. He doesn't understand an empire encompasses many worlds from many different systems, that the federation is hundreds of species, that food and entertainment is unlimited in star trek and so people live their lives seeking fulfillment and knowledge, and doesn't grasp the actual size of the galaxy and how even going 10x or 1000x the speed of light would still take many years to traverse. It's really heartbreaking to have such a wonderfully philosophical and curiously scientific universe get devolved into dumb action setups, bad jokes, identity politics, and barely veiled current political topics addressed clumsily. It also doesn't help that we've seen this kind of crappy politicization of multiple former geek properties in recent years
