I'v purchased three old Police 870's this year. All manufactured in the 1980's when Remington still made good firearms. All have rifle sights, extended mag tubes and sling attachments. Good bluing and no rust, furniture is good with light battle scars.

I ran the Mossy500 or 590 before I lost them on that lake trip. That's one reason why I kept wood furniture.

About five years ago I picked up a pair of 870P Magnums from the PA State Police for cheap. No barrels, a little banged up, and very dirty. I figured I'd mess with them later. Recently we (my 18 y/o) treated one to gently used wood furniture took off the Surefire light that it came with and went over it all. Other than a +2, it looks new. My boy (and I) are really proud of it. The boy has a hard-on for original, while I love the totally tacti-cool look. Cody at VC has it in his shop now getting the machine/smithing work done. Can't wait to get it back. Cody is a cool guy!

This is the first I've heard about a Vang Comp barrel optimized for Federal FliteControl - "..they have one better for FliteControl..." (around 3:36). I'm only familiar with the back boring and porting Vang Comp has been doing for decades. I'll ask Hans or Cody as I'm certain I'll run into both of them in the next few weeks. I would call Hans right now if I wasn't certain I'll see him in person in the next few weeks.
I have an LE trade-in Wingmaster with the full Vang Comp treatment - back bore, ports, sighting system, Cerakote. My experience with a Vang Comp barrel and Federal FliteControl, both 8 (LE13300) and 9 (LE13200) pellet loads, is that the FliteControl pattern is larger beyond 10 yards versus the pattern of FliteControl alone in a regular cylinder choke barrel. The FliteControl wad is slightly negatively impacted by the opened and longer forcing cone. The FliteControl wad seems to pattern better with fixed cylinder choked barrels than it does with fixed improved choked barrels. Chokes tighter than cylinder seem to deform the wad cup and FliteControl's technology to get a tight pattern is the wad cup. I have 4 870's to use for side-by-side comparison.
It's been my experience that a Vang Comp barrel with regular Remington Managed Recoil 00 buck (RL12BK00) performs pretty close to a cylinder barrel using FliteControl.
As always, every shotgun is different and you should pattern your guns with your chosen ammo and I've done that extensively so this is my experience and my experience alone.

John, I had the same result with my “non-optimized” VCS 870. With FFC 8 or 9 pellet OO, it patterned just as tightly as Royal Rio, Remington, S&B or any other run of the mill OO buck. I patterned at 5-10-15-20-25 and patterns did not exceed a 12” spread even at 25. Good to know I won’t need a FFC optimized bbl, as I know FFC doesn’t always pattern as tightly in a standard VCS bbl as one would like.

To render aid to a family member or other innocent party? To be able to put both hands up and show responding LE that you are not a threat? Any number of reasons. Use your imagination. Real defensive encounters don't always stick to the script we have in our heads.

Actually no. I might suggest you read Mr. Ayoob suggestions on not tricking guns out for self defense as it pertains to court room appearance. Second, go look at waterfowl guns from the last 40 years. Other than guys shooting snow geese, they have limited magazine. This gun does not look “identical to grandpa’s duck gun”. It’s a great shotgun, but it has been souped up and it doesn’t look like a duck gun. No offense, just difference in opinion. And, my plain Jane 870 patterns the same as yours with that ammo. By the way, enjoy your channel and thanks for doing it. I think you are giving too much credit to the wood stock. :)

LOL I am a MAG Deadly Force Instructor, MAG40 graduate, and have asked Mas about this ON CAMERA. You're wrong. To the average non-shooter, this looks EXACTLY like Grandpa's duck gun. To an actual hunter, who knows and understands firearms, it looks ever so slightly different. Who will be on the jury, exactly? What are the chances that the DA is a firearms enthusiast, exactly?

Look, I appreciate all your class room achievements. But, you aren’t the only one who has taken classes. I appreciate the “academic” aspect of this conversation. But my opinion, is that it’s a nice shotgun. It’s also on the line as far as firearm that has been enhanced. Yes, good questions. And, if you are ever in an actual shooting you don’t want to give the DA or jurors any “ammo” against you. Just my opinion...and remember the old saying about opinions...your own included. 😂
More importantly, I do hope that your son is well and finally has that shotgun in HIS possession, so that he can protect himself if he ever has to. I believe you said Virginia. Lots of bad DAs there and rough areas too. Did some time in the Army there...some bad places indeed. Anyway, Christ’s blessings to you and yours.

Self defenders need to stop worrying about how their weapon or choice in ammunition will effect how they might be percieved if they have to defend themselves in court. Worry more about your knowledge of laws in your area and get professional self defense training.
