Beiderwand on the Drawloom

- Beiderwand is a traditional textile with a long history - and I learned a lot about it when I was preparing my first Beiderwand project for weaving on the drawloom. In this video I discuss my understanding of the structure and how I set up my loom to weave it. Matters arising (such as Beiderwand's place in the family of lampas weaves; variations in setup; and design considerations) will be discussed in a future presentation, after my brain has stopped hurting.

i know i'm a little late to this little party, but i gotta tell you i love your videos :) your confidence and curiosity have finally got me saving up for a floor loom so i can try out all these cool things. your diagrams and draft segments are the main way i'm coming to understand both things out in the wild, so thank you immensely for your explanations!

I am also glad to hear I sound confident ;-) I do hope you take the plunge. In the next week or so I plan to be putting out a simple recipe for damask table mats, intended for new drawloom weavers or folks who are curious about pattern possibilities on a smallish number of pattern shafts. @@DuellingRabbits I do have a silly question: is the console bar for the draw cords mounted crooked? It seems very much like the left side of the bar is mounted higher than the right side O.o
@@VVDCS Well-spotted! You are absolutely right. Geometry. The pattern-shafts are attached to the pull-handles on the console from front-to-back and left-to-right. So the shafts at the back are attached to handles on the right-hand side of the console. To pull them up high enough (given the greater distance to the front of the loom), the handles need to come down further - hence the downwards slant on the hook bar. This is easier to show than explain: it's demonstrated in Part 4 of 'Weaving a Drawloom Project' - start at around 12:55.

I can't wait anymore, I have modern loom and table loom, but drawloom offers other possibilities.

I take your point - on its own, the statement does sound kind of absurd! In my defense, rigging a drawloom is such a production it makes sense to put on as long a warp as the weaver can stand, which in my case usually means 8+ meters. On my rigid heddle loom ... not so much.

Well, it's a bit cramped in the loom room - but there might be space in the drawloom extension to spread a sleeping bag.
