      Nate's Film Tutorials I agree & I’m headed for a C200, the C100m2 is my learning step. I shoot a lot of nature & wildlife & have already ran into an issue with the new camera. 8 bit banding in a clear blue sky gradient is driving my nuts, ha!

    Nice comparison between the two. I think the C100's AVCHD holds up pretty well and it's standard profile looked a lot nicer than the Gh5's cinelike d.
    Definitely pushing me in to the GH5S realm as for a lot of the events I cover, I worry about the ISO performance of the GH5.
    I'd love to see a video using both these cameras in an interview style setup with one as a wide and one as a close up.

    • @NatesFilmTutorials
      @NatesFilmTutorials  5 років тому +1

      Great suggestion. It does hold up! For ISO, I found while the C100 can go higher it’s not as detailed as the G7 or GH5. I may put out an ISO test, just for that.

      @@NatesFilmTutorials Now that is something that no-one has said before. 95% of the time when shooting with my C100 it's going into an atomos and retains about 1/3 stop more dynamic range and sharpness in the image. The knowledge that the GH5 also does that is very interesting. Looking forward to seeing the results!

    I love my c100 mark II. I have been using it as my A cam for weddings and events. I also use a GH4 for a B cam the two match up well using Wide DR on the c100 and CINE D on the GH4. I just ordered a GH5S to replace the GH4 as my b cam. In the future depending on how the GH5s does I may make it my new main camera and add a GH5 as a backup camera. What are your thoughts on the GH5s?

    • @grifster360
      @grifster360 5 років тому +1

      @@raksh9 I haven't done any side by side comparisons just yet. That being said I did use them both to shoot a music promo and wedding. After these two jobs I am leaning more towards the GH5S becoming my a cam. As far as compared to the GH4 it is definitely worth the upgrade. The things that I do still love about my c100 is the auto focus and the built in nd filters both come in really handy when shooting weddings. I will be adding more about the both of them on my channel in the future.

    You have filmmaking followers in Mexico. Question: What is the best zoom lens for doc-style run-and-gun with the GH5? Would you go Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 or Canon 24-70mm f/2.8?

      I use the Canon 24-70 f2.8. But to be honest Id say you're much better off with the Canon 24-105 f4.0 due to its built in image stabilisation and the fact that f2.8 is too shallow for run and gun work anyway.

      When I tested the C100 and compared it to the T3i which is pretty close to the 700D. The C100 is better across the board.
      Sharper, more dynamic range and low light. But the C100 is an older camera and newer cameras give you better quality. Something to consider even though the c100 has some great video features

      @@stefanthorndahl1666 It's 10bit in most recorders, but c100 only outputs 8bit 422 PsF so it's 8bit wrapped in 10bits. Using an external recorder, you gain about 1/3-1/4 stop more DR, it's not all that much and doesn't make a huge difference in the final image... but Prores/DNX are better codecs than AVCHD so it retains more data in the final output. That's the real advantage.

    I still use c100's a lot. In my testing, vs most of the other Canon DSLR bodies, the footage is far better. I also find, shooting 1080 on most other Canon DSLR bodies seems to be hobbled vs the AVCHD off the c100. Best results: c-log and sharpen in post. I have a feeling that Canon hobbles it's 1080 in DSLR bodies to make their 4k appear better. When putting up a 1080 image and upscaling against a 4k image, the 4k image is always going to yield more sharpness due to the amount of information. However, in down scaling to 1080 vs native 1080 on the c100, people have never complained and the smaller file sizes are a massive advantage in post. I also find, when downscaling to 4k, if the codec is weak, the strong codec of the c100 shows it's merits. When you put the Sony F3 against a lot of 4k cameras with a weaker codec, even the in-body 35mbit codec absolutely blows them out of the water due to the increased dynamic range. The F3 vs the c100 is no contest, it completely destroys it. When shooting F3 with an external recorder, at 4:4:4 10bit, the 1080 image looks far better than images I've been able to achieve out of most 4k DSLRs sans RAW. The massive 14 stops of dynamic range is more important than resolution imho, and yields an absolutely stellar image when upscaled to 2.7k (for projection) or 4k for TV. Absolutely nuts the image you can get today when you consider the cost, especially with the flood of DSLR bodies with hobbled footage vs the cost of cinema grade cameras. c100 mkI /w DPAF update can be found for as low as $850 if you hunt, the F3 can be found for as low as $700 if you really look+$400 for an external recorder that does RAW/ARRIRAW/Prores/DNXHD conversion directly in the recorder.

    • @pressreset
      @pressreset 5 років тому +3

      @@NatesFilmTutorials Sure. If you have any F3 questions, feel free to email. They are fantastic cameras. A hidden gem. Every DP I know out there who has used one sings praise of the image you can get out of it. I know multiple DPs who, when they started to get unloaded for fs7 and dropped in price to $500 were buying 2 at a time. The history of the camera is a weird one. To sum it up quickly as possible, basically, Sony worked with Panasonic to develop the Genesis in the alliance. That alliance broke, and Sony developed the F35, bringing along all the developments from the Genesis. The Cinealta line was 2/3 sensor before that, and didn't move to S35 until the F35 came out. In their efforts to develop a lower cost ($25k) cinema body, their team used body tech from the EX series camcorders and combined it with the backplane of the F35 to reduce cost. This resulted in a camera that has characteristics of the Genesis/F35/Arri. Sony realized that the camera was too good and would water down furthering their Cinealta line, so they quickly swept it under the rug and chopped off all further firmware updates pushing the f5 and fs5 to the front. F3 was supposed to receive a 2.7k/4k update but didn't so that it wouldn't impede the sales of f5/fs5. I know a number of people who purchased fs700s to go 4k and instantly regretted it vs the 1080 F3. All of which have reduced dynamic range and IQ by comparison. F3 appeared, then quickly disappeared within the span of 2 years due to this. Anyone who has owned or used one though will tell you that the image rivals that of Arri when used with an external recorder and is absolutely one of if not the best 1080 cameras ever made due to the cost ratio. Now we have Blackmagic, so vs some newer cameras it is starting to show it's age, however I don't hesitate to shoot F3 for many projects, even ones that require scaling to projection. I didn't renew my lease on the Varicam, because F3 frankly sees more use.
