c100 mki is still a fantastic camera. Especially for the price. If you look around, you can find them for under $1,000. Sometimes in the $700-$900 range. I use my c100s all the time. Quick tips: Set button 7 to AF lock. Then you get 1shot, and lock/unlock on the grip. So, you can point the camera, flip lock on/off and stay locked on the subject. Then, when you flip it back on, it will track the center point again. When recording in cinelock/c-log bump sharpening in post slightly. WideDR is the most popular to shoot in. Pick up a Ninja 2 for super cheap, and you get 8bit 422 in a 10bit 422 wrapper. Ninja 2 can use cheap SSDs or cheap spinning drives for ProRes / DNXHD at bitrates of 200+. Thx for the video.

@@DRACOFURY Well.. you should've asked the owner whether the camera had been upgraded or not... it is very clearly written out by Canon that the C100, C200 and C300 mark I needs that upgrade as separate.

This camera doesn't get nearly enough love. Whenever it's brought up in any of the "which camera should I buy" threads, I often see people say there is no real reason to own a c100 in 2019, when there are more feature rich cameras available with similar or lower price points. But for many of the reason you mention in this video, the c100 is probably one of the greatest "your first pro-grade camera" options out there.
My situation was almost the opposite of yours. We had been using a c100 as our main cam for about 5 years, and then only recently picked up a GH5s for all it's cool b-roll capabilities. I always liked my c100, but I don't think I realized how amazing it really was until getting the GH5s. Things I love about the c100:
    The Batteries
They last waaaay longer, load directly to the back of the camera (so you don't have to unmounted from a tripod), and give you a remaining battery minute count. That last one is huge. I got so used to knowing exactly how much battery I had, that the battery bar on the GH5s is just such a big step down.
    The Buttons
The C100 has dedicated buttons on the camera body for a TON of features, and you are able to use most all of them regardless of whether you're recording or not. I know you can assign buttons on the GH5s, but some things (like turning on a WFM) can't be done while recording.
    Built-In ND Filters
One of the single greatest features a camera can have, and HUGE reason that this is a great entry-level camera (specifically for one-man-band situations).
    Dual Card Slots
I know you said it's more of a luxury, but being able to dual record (giving you a backup real-time) is such a nice feature. And it's a more feasible option than on the GH5s because of....
    The Codec
I had no idea how efficient the HVEC codec was before using the GH5s. You can record for days, and storage/backup is sooo much easier. And while it often get's knocked for bitrate, it still produces a phenomenal image that is more than good enough for anyone in the "which camera should I buy" stage of their careers.
    The handle w/strap
I don't go handheld often, but man do I love the security of that handle strap. I always feel like I'm going to drop my GH5s
    Sound Options
You mentioned how great the XLR hookup is, but I also can't stress enough how great it is to be able to tweak sound options (like volume) externally on the camera, without having to go into a menu.
I get that each of these things may seem small on their own, but as a total package, the C100 does a lot of things to make your life way easier on a shoot. If you're looking for a B-roll camera to shoot travel vlog footage, than no, it's not for you. But if you primarily shoot corporate talking head, this is such a great choice. I could talk about this camera for hours.

I picked one of these up about a year ago as a departure from DSLRs and an entry into a pro camera meant for video and couldn't be happier. Every camera has limitations and they all perform differently from one another. But, this camera shoots very well and ergonomically, it's so comfortable and easy to use. And you the shooter are the main ingredient.
The only goof I've had so far was with the ND dial being right where your left hand would cradle the lens, I hit the dial slightly and a filter bracket appeared in the shot. It took me a minute to figure out what the hell was going on in my frame and it "ruined" a little of the video (can be cropped out, as it was very minimal). But now I'll know what it is if I ever see it again.
Other than that, such a wonderful camera. VERY affordable and something that will get you by for several years, so you can invest in lenses. Great review, Wyatt. I agree with all of your points.

A very well balanced review Sir! I use the C100 since the cinema line came out. I agree with all the pros and cons you mentioned. Now the AVCHD issue. If you record on SD cards, I second what you say. I use an ATOMOS Ninja Blade as an external HD recorder and this actually gives me 422 HQ footage, which contains way more data and better picture quality. This also solves the flippy screen issue, because I can turn the Ninja Blade every way I want it to. But one has to have in mind that one minute of footage generates about 1 to 1,5 GB of data. Another thing you mentioned is also very important. The cinemaline is depending a lot more on perfect aperture, exposure etc, than other cameras. One really has to dig in the videoscope settings that are very well embedded in the system. Also a big thing that many people forget about is to let the camera run 5 minutes to get working temperature and then do the ABB (automatic black balance). This really reduces noise in any dark and black parts of the footage. Especially for outdoor footage I recommend to shoot in cinema log and native. Both settings offer a lot of dynamic range options, which imho stand out if one uses the camera-log profiles in FCPX. I had great success with cinema log especially shooting live concert footage. The C-Log handles the different lights on a stage very well, especially when you have to record from far away with a tele. Keep the good work coming, Cheers, Marc

I bought the c100 a year ago based on the same decision (having a great Cam-A for interviews)
Another benefit is A LONG record time and 6 hour battery. if I needed to record for an hour or 2 for speeches (as most DSLR cut out after 20-30mins).
School Plays, presentations for corporates, wedding speeches... you need this.
Here’s also an important reason I bought this camera. To have hands on practice if u needed to hire a c300, c500 in future for a job.
The layout and ergonomics on the c100, means that when/if I got a bigger commercial job that specifically needed 4/6k or 12 bit ... I could hire in a higher spec unit for the shoot. If you didn’t have practice on the C line, you would need an extra day or 2 camera hire to work things out.

I just bought a C100 as a single camera to shoot a podcast, and to shoot stuff of my new nephew and other little life stuff. I couldn't be more happy. Its a camera that I've wanted for years and was stoked when it started dropping below $2000. I know for the money I could have bought something like the Black Magic Pocket 4k, but idk I've just always been in love with the C100 and shooting 4k just isn't something I really care about all too much tbh.
Great review of a camera that in my opinion is still a really good choice of a camera in 2019 especially for the price

Still really happy with my C100 M2 - generally agree with your observations, though I still feel the C100 M2 is what the C100 M1 should have been. The ease of use, ND filters, good audio, small file size to me balances out the HD only 8-bit 4.2.0 codec. Still grades well and is a workhorse. He didn't mention overheating especially when shooting 4K in a DSLR! C100 has cooling fan that is a huge plus - shoot forever without overheating.

This is a very good review from someone who really understand an image. Too bad most videographers are only into cold specs. I shoot with the C100 in 2019 for Rai, Italian public broadcaster. I used to have a Sony A7S but the C100 is so much easier to shoot with on documentary style works. I only miss the full frame sensor. A full frame C100 Mark III with HD 4:2:2 and slow mo would be my dream camera (I don't need 4K).

    • @Kaboom1212Gaming
      @Kaboom1212Gaming 4 роки тому

The image is so clear and clean too since the c100 uses a 4k sensor and then downscales the footage (as you probably know). I'm currently able to use a C300 Mk.ii and I would like to buy a c100 for personal future use. I would highly recommend the c300 if it's in your budget because even if you don't need the 4k, the c300 can still record in it which is a plus for non-informed clients who want 4k just because they think it looks good.

      @@tristano1984 Ah I see.
I have used the c300 for handheld stuff, it is very well balanced. But on longer shoots it does start to weigh on you I would agree. Plus the Optical Stabilizer in the 24-105 I use can only do so much. IBS combined with lens is definitely the way to go for handheld as you probably already experienced with your A7S.
Lack Full frame is a downside. The C500 does have full frame but we are way out of my budget at that point.

I know this is a bit old, but hope dies last. How do you handle the 25pf format of the camera? It writes in progressive mode but in an interlaced wrapper. This affects the video quality, it looks pixelated. One way so far was to deinterlace it with handbrake (or any other similar software) which takes some time (and is counterproductive if time is not on your side). Another one is to define it as a 4K video file (in Avid) and then stretch it. This seemed to do the trick (and to be a quick and simple solution) although it seems the picture gets a bit softer this way. On Apple there was this software called clip wrapper that was simply changing the file's marking from "interlaced" to "progressive" as quick as you would copy the file from one drive to another. Is there anything similar on a windows system? I'm sure others will appreciate any good suggestion for a fix on this. Thank you!

Love mine, found on eBay with zero hours, $1100. The Zacuto z finder and bracket is a must have, and the wonderful Canon glass you can use! Even the cheaper L f4 lenses are still amazing in low light. I do not have dual pixel and shoot the same way, manual focus, or one shot auto if my lens is not a manual lens - not too much run and gun. The optical viewfinder I liken to an appendix... I am looking at a location camera and want the super 35mm. Canon color is amazing. Sold. I use allot of Sony but its color is wonky on a good day. Canon does just so well. I mostly will shoot on balcony shots with a longer lens but not nuts because I capture the full stage. Low light performance is important to me. 4K UHD/DCI is nice but not a deal breaker if I don't have it. My a6400 has that, but do that too long and overheating is an issue, and the 1080p is not quite up to what I was looking for. I like the EF glass catalog too. No interest at all in a PL mount. I am so close to getting a C100, it is all the camera I could ever need. Need vs. want and no I am not made of money but I get it right the first time. I have had Canon's before and was happy. I don't know how much the dual pixel AF is and don't know if that matters if I manual focus anyway. The waveform is a must. I am glad this camera has it. The big sensor gives options smaller ones don't especially in lower light. You convinced me on this one. First review I have seen where it is an honest, not hyped opinion on your use case and workflow and what someone might need to look out for. I am not a cinema shooter either. I don't want a tiny sensor. So this is it. Nice work on your video.

Maybe a stupid question: Most people use an Atomos recorder to get the Prores 422 output, I get it. But can the same results be had by downloading the 4:2:0 AVCHD from the SD cards in-camera, cut the video down to the meat and potatoes without any modifications in Final cut X, and save it (Convert/output) to Prores 422 HQ in the "Share" final output? No one seems to be able to confirm this process. Sure would like an honest answer from someone who knows this workflow. Thanks.

This may be a dumb question. I apologize If so. But I have a Canon 70D and I love it. I've used it alot and i've bought additional ef-s lenses for it. Does the c100 use EF-S lenses without having to buy an adapter??

Yes, the EF-S lenses will work on the c100. In the internal settings, there's even an option to "turn on" the EF lens compatibility, meaning, it crops-in slightly to avoid any vignetting with wider angle lenses.

If i am recording 2 hour long lectures in church and school settings with low light, which camera would you buy: C100 or G85/G5 I am afraid if I use the Panasonic it will overheat. What do you think? thanks in advance.

Craig Holliday You won’t have overheating issues with the Panasonic, however, you’ll probably be better off with the C100 for the low light, better battery life and XLR inputs for better audio.
