Using the c100 mkii in 2020! Still my weapon of choice... they just need to unlock that 4K sensor 👍🏻🎥
Magic lantern??
I thought it was a 4k sensor? just downsampling to 1080?
Hey Ryan! Im planning to invest in a new camera.Should I go with the mirrorless route such as the a7s,gh4 or go for a c100. I really dont want to buy another dslr for video production but the a7s seems really intriguing. It would really help to know your take on this
Go with the gh4
If you haven't, I would suggest investing in audio, lenses and lighting instead.
Just a quick question: I'm going to be shooting with one of these for the first time and I was wondering if you could control the focus with the app, or will it require a designated follow focus device? Thanks!!
Which lens did you guys use for shooting the first segment when you were describing the new features about the c100 mll?
Quick question for you C100 with external recorder or C300? Which one is a bag for the buck in 2018
Love your videos! Very helpful and well paced.
I was wondering what your opinion was on budget cinema lenses (under $1k), like Rokinon.
I probably laughed way to hard at the "first things first I'm the realest" part than I should've :D gotta luv josh
Hey Ryan...would you go with A7S + Atomos Shogun or C100 mark ii (For Short films)..love to hear your thoughts !!
I'm looking for some less pricely than cinema lenses for my c100ii what should i get?
"I'll see you next time when I confront my dad with a crossbow" I fell off the toilet laughing!
Has anyone tested out the auto iris function for the C100 or C100 Mark II? Wondering if it is fluid like a video camera or "stoppey" like a DSLR
How do you feel about mounting a Sony AS200V to the mark I handle to capture slow motion vs spending the extra money on Mark ii?
Can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched this episode. Any thoughts of still getting a mk I to save money for glass and building a film production company from that?
I can't tell you how happy I get when I see a new video from you guys in my subscription box. Can't wait to see the new short. Long live Film Riot!
Im thinking of making a UA-cam show but the thing is im having trouble writing the script and the equipment. What should i use ?
hey filmriot is there a big difference in audio quality between filming with shotgun mic attached to the camera using a boompole or using a zoom h5 with shotgun mic and boompole? I can't decide whether to kill my budget on a zoom h5 or just going with the short film without one
Get a Tascam DR-60D instead of a Zoom H5, and yes, please mount it on a boom pole to get it as close to the source as possible.
Love the show been watching for almost 3-4 years OMG you have helped me so much !
Another great episode, can't wait to see the short.
Can you recommend an external monitor that would efficient on battery on a nikon battery pack
Hey Ryan! Can you teach us how to do a good Doctor Who regeneration effect using after effects? Also while you are filming on a curved dolly track going in a lot of circles (you can ignore the second part of you need to.)
Been looking forward to this video even though these cameras are way out of my league.
Hey Ryan! Do you know when the c100 mk2 will be officially out on the market to purchase?
Ryan: First thing first...
Josh: I'm the realist!
LOL! Josh is awesome! LOL.
What camera did you use to look at the new c100? Thnx
Probably the old C100.
i like how the last "do it" was all quiet haha
Not gonna lie, the thumbnail for this episode was pretty cool :D
:)
That's what made me watch it.
I want too see the Black Magic Ursa vs C100
NostalgiNorden
I never got why people disliked Black magic gear. I've shot on the 2.5k cinema and loved it. Although from what I've herd it was pretty bad before the firmware updates
*****
Addressing the batter issue. There is an external batter add on that is swappable and supposedly lasts for ~5 hours of continuous shooting.
Also I'm hoping the second iteration of the black magic cameras will be much better. This is their first attempt at making cameras remember.
Don't forget the crop factor on the Black Magic cameras. Makes wide shots a pain.
NostalgiNorden I've rented the Balckmagic Cinema Camera and honestly I was unimpressed. The image itself is fantastic, but the camera is such in a pain to work with. For quick run and gun style shooting, it's really not the best option. Can't speak for the URSA, though...
*****
I've never used the Ursa Either. How was it a pain. I haven't Used it enough too really say it's great or crap. All I know for sure right now is that I can get a better image from it than anything I've shot previously and the settings are simplistic but I haven't found them lacking... yet
how do you exit out of a menu in a nikon camera i know this is a novice question but please help.
Try hitting menu again.
I want to do film and some fashion photography portraits to be exact and some nature as well as Architecture so which do any pros here or advance recommend getting? Sony a7 or possibly a7s, GH4, or Canon 5D Mark II?
The 5d mark III is a portait beast
Jesus! The camera's that you named are all just the popular thing right now. Try DPreview.com. You can compare camera specs with each other. I highly recommend it!
TipToe Productions Ill try that site but i just mentioned these because ive heard good things about them same with some Nikon
If photography is where you're making your money, go with 5D MkII and put Magic Lantern on it. Otherwise, choose between the a7s and the GH4. Each have their pros and cons, so pick the camera that has disadvantages you can live with. Don't listen to other's bias (why I'm not telling you which I prefer).
Phillip Bloom has great, objective reviews of both the a7s and the GH4. I recommend checking them out before committing your hard earned cash!
Finally i have been waiting all day but its worth it. Thanks ryan
Which one has better hd quality? C100ii or 5d iv
One cinema lens I now dream of using - Leica Summilux-C 16mm T1.4.
Apparently one of the main lenses used in Birdman, sounds about right for the shots I'm thinking of, but just beautiful, that bokeh, those lens flares. Wow.
watched this at least five times while deciding whether i can stretch to a mk ii. Really informative, but damn the best part is the "I'm the realest" out of nowhere. gets me every time.
Agree with your take on this update Film Riot the feature bump as a package is pretty compelling though I was not uber impressed with the image quality on the newer camera as an "upgrade" to the old one... could be the old one was already pretty good. However, boy oh boya is the difference between the still photo glass and those eye wateringly expensive cine lenses clear!
Im thinking about getting either a c100 Mark 1 or a Sony A7sii.
I mostly do product shots and stuff like that.
KaamilAF c100 unless you need 4K or low light
Quick Question, What do you use to record Film Riot? Do you happen to have a behind the scenes video on a Film Riot setup and shoot?
NO! Don't do it. Is nothing sacred? You'll kill the magic. A more important question would be, will the MK III have 4K? If you ask Canon to to add it into the design, before they build a proto, perhaps they'll listen.
Ryan! Can you recommend any camera's that are good quality, but cheap? Like...under $1,000?
I've collected the set of Rokinon Cine Lenses over the last year, they look great and are super affordable. I'd recommend getting the Canon EF mount version though, because it can be easily converted to other camera bodies. If you get the M43 version, you're pretty much stuck with it.
Can you pleas do a how to falldown the stairs how to?
Thanks for doing the comparison. B&H has a huge discount on a C100 bundle and I was considering picking it up. Your comparison shots and information solidified my decision to go with the C100 Mark II instead. Gotta keep stacking those chips so I can pick one up before the Mark III comes out. :-)
I love the work you do
00:57 hahaha, love the video but this made my night 😂
DO IT!!
Very cool comparison video guys! thank you.
The c100 is AMAZING! But I'm on kinda a low budget, any cheap options for cameras? please reply!
I was wondering if you have ever heard of film connection. It's a film school that interested me but it sounds a little fishy. Any tips?
currently using a 600d. Should I save for a c100 mark 2 ($7000) or pick up a cheap c100 for like 3000?
Can you make an infinite zoom tutorial like Limitless ?
The original C100 has been my work horse camera for the past few years now and I gotta say Canon made the most perfect camera for my needs. Great ergonomics, great picture and quality! Fast and easy media for post work. The Mark II would be great to have but the changes don't justify the cost considering I already have a C100.
split screen for examples/comparisons please like a quick wipe because with the quick cuts i cant really tell the difference.
Hey ryan, i'm looking at getting the Mk II however do you think there will be a MK III anytime soon? as i think i'd wait for that? are we expecting a MK III this year do you know in regards to the canon dropping a new gen every 2 years. thanks.
+Komplete Carp i've googled all over the place, but can't find any info on this either!
+Andrew Tregoning mark 2 just came out, same with the c300. I highly doubt there will be a mark 3, as the mark 2 was only meant to fix problems with the mark 1. If you want something better you have to go to the 3 or 500
Hi Ryan, have any sense to buy a Canon C100 Mark II in 2017?
I'm tired of using dsrl's for video, but I'm afraid the C100's could be old technology and Canon may launches a new model with 4K this year. As I usually use it for live events, I do not really need 4K, but I do not want to lose money investing in old equipment. Thanks!
Does the mark 2 have black and white filming?
Post production color ?
Ryan when is the new short film coming out?
Great review!!!
Hi Ryan! And Film Riot! First of all, well, congratulations on all your work so far, this is pretty much a bible for me at the moment. Here's some question for you, kinda out of subject to this particular video: I'm thinking in buying an A7S or a GH4 - I know you "can't" decide for me so I won't even ask. I'm inclined to the A7S because on all my shootings so far lighting is the hardest part to get right. Then again, let's say I buy the A7S - I really want a GOOD lens that goes with it, and all my knowledge in lenses is Canon based (like the L series etc). Should I just buy an adapter E > EF and go with L series canon and canon primes or should I go with Rokinon Cine Lenses? You're saying that cine lenses are overall better - does that apply to Rokinon as well? For A7S?
So yea - question is = Regardless of buying a GH4 or A7S should I buy the adapter for Canon lenses or go with Rokinon Cine lenses? Since canon cine lenses are just not an option (too expensive).
Well thanks ey, keep up the good work
Also, since I'm entitled to ask "anything" out of you guys (why the heck not ey!) - if possible, in the future, give us some video of grading/editing some S-LOG2 files, particularly on skin tones, I haven't tried it yet since I don't have the camera, but wondering if my skills are good enough to get a good looking image. Specially since I come from Canon and well, canon has that "oh yes it already looks good enough" look.
Thanks again, HUGS!
***** Thanks for the comment. I have decided for the Sony A7S. Althought I'm still highly doubtful on lenses. I really want at least one quality glass and I want this camera to shoot video. I was thinking something like a Zeiss Loxia 35mm f/2 and a Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Sony E-Mount. I don-t know if cine lenses are better for moviemaking (in a DIY environment) than IS lenses... If I would go for the Metabones adapter EF to E it would be easier though, because then I could use my 17-50 tamron and get some good canon primes with IS. And I could still get rokinon cine.
Any help is appreciated but yea, I'm getting closer and closer to my decision... taking forever though ;)
There's another 4k option in that price range also - the Samsung NX1. It's well worth a peek, especially with the latest 1.2 firmware?
Your lighting is EXCELLENT.
What do you think of John and Craig (Scriptnotes)? And do you know any other Podcasts as good as Scriptnotes?
Hey I was making a movie for a film festival when I tried to make a charicter look as if he were falling from the sky could you show me a simple and cheap way to creat that
He Ryan what is the best camera to buy under the $450.
If you can spend a little more, I would recommend the Canon T3i.
I've been considering the C100, but after the announcement of the Mark 2 I held off. Think it'll be worth the wait!
Any tips for my first short film?
Don't make your film around your camera, Research location, budget for food, transportation, travel, etc. Make sure you have legal documents to protect you and those around you. When it comes to the tech, Ask your self as you read through the script, "what camera shots are needed for each cut, the movements, then based on that right down the gear (dolly track, steadicam, slider, jib etc. if needed). Lighting - this is of utmost importance that you have a dang good gaffer and electrician to ensure your lighting displays the best mood for your picture. See what your film calls for in terms of the look. This is where glass comes in. The right look for the right job. Shane Hurlbut has done extensive tests on different lenses. Ensure you have glass that matches your budget yet ensures you have your look. Lastly, choosing your camera. Shooting on a RED for the sake of shooting on a RED is not a wise choice. If you must rent, look at your daily cost of operation and data collection. Ask yourself if your story needs slow motion, does it need to have a particular look at night. What kind of color cast is required. All I will say is do not make your story revolve around the camera. The camera is chosen based on story and budget and feel. The right tool for the right job. Good luck
Eduardo Gonzalez Thank you!
I tee hee'ed when Josh said "i'm the realest"
That joke at 1:00 though xD
thoughts about a7s vs c100 for production?
The A7s sucks. It's just really great in low-light. But you can achieve better results (although not in 4k) on practically any given camera!
He will say the C100, but for me 4k is a real dealbreaker.
GH4 over both
+tiptoe productions Lmao not true. I own the a7s and it has superior quality with any lighting.
I own a c100, 5d3, and a gh4 and since I bought the gh4 I don't even use the other cameras anymore. I'm not a fan of the a7s and I think it's overpriced. If you're shooting at 10,000 iso then you aren't lighting right. Plus the colors are weird on the sony. That's just my 2 cents but I do professional videos for Ford so I've used just about every camera on a daily basis and I will say the gh4 is on par with a red epic with out the raw.
Great episode guys! :))
is there a site where i could pay monthly for the c100 ? thanks in advance
Its called saving up
Late response, but check out texasmediasystems.
How are you still able to afford a house?
BEST ADVERTISEMENT EVAAA!
Why would you use a prime over a zoom like these?
That's a mean hostess you got with you there
Ryan would a Nikon d3200 be a could first production camera?
Yes, but there are other choices which could be better.
If your new to DSLR film making then it's a good choice. It's one of the cheapest DSLR's that has reasonable quality and a range of features, such as an external mic input. Which some cheap entry level DSLR's don't have.
Paul Ocone ok tjanks for the help
Mitchell Thompson And thanks for the help as well what would the other choices be?
Ryan, I just received the C100 mii a couple of weeks ago. The ergonomic upgrades are great. One additional thing that I wish it had was an internal recording option that could do at least 8-bit 422 (50M) . With regard to the AVCHD and MP4 recording options, I wasn't sure about the differences in image quality between the two. I called the Cinema EOS support line and talked to a tech and said that the compression is different between the two. Technically, AVCHD yields a slightly better image quality, but it is a minor difference, and wouldn't be that noticeable, especially on the web. I've taken the C100 mkii on a few shoots, and have used both options for different reasons. Presentation stuff that is destined for the web, I use MP4. No more converting MTS to MP4... Yay! Short film type stuff, I use AVCHD. Haven't tried the external option yet.
7:24... I caught your GoT reference there... ;-)
Sony FS 700R ?
did you guys change your lighting for this episode? the lighting looks brigther, softer, and cooler now with the chroma behind vs before. or is it just me?
I love the image quality of the C100 as demonstrated on your UA-cam feature. Can you get this same look from the C100 Mk2? There are those who say that the Mk2's image quality is a bit more video-like compared to the more 'filmic' look of the Mk1s. When I saw the side-by-side comparisons (including yours) that some people have put up on UA-cam, the facial skin tones on the Mk1 seem preferably warmer to me in that sort of orange/red dimension; and, more generally, I could understand what people meant when they described the Mk1 as being more filmic.
The girl "Do It" is great!!. So is your info, thanks, you stop me from compromising for C100
WHEN IS THE NEW SHORT RELEASING!
When it's finished.
And as usual, Emily comes from out of nowhere. BTW Ryan, have you ever rented the Zeiss f/0.7 (Kubrick) lens?
definitely a bit of a miss not upping the overcranking. this thing shooting at 60p when the iPhone is shooting at 240 is a bit of an embarrassment. :)
You can't really compare those though. It's the same with megapixels. Just because my Xperia Z3 has 21MP and my a7s has 12MP doesn't mean it's embarrassing for the a7s because it kicks my phone's ass so hard I can't put it in words
I'm not comparing the two, literally. That would be silly. What I am saying is that the majority of pro-sumer and pro level cameras have made it a priority to offer slow motion and higher frame rates. If they are doing it in phones, in consumer cameras, in pro cameras and in camcorders with all manner of sensor sizes and pricepoints, clearly it is not a technological hurdle, it is matter of choice.
And that, is an embarassement, imo.
trevorpinnocky I understand that phones and consumer camcorders don't use higher bitrate, so them can handle more frames... with less processing work... But It would be nice to have the option of less bite rate and more frame rate!
I have the BMPCC and If the camera can handle 24fps RAW, I don't understand why can handle 60fps ProRes...
I really want to get into film making but this stuff is high priced, and where I live money is hard to come by.
You don't need expensive gear to make films. Go out and make something with the resources you have.
***** Lol, those are cheap for you guys but to me having $100 is being rich.
***** I don't think I have age, or my parents won't let me.
A great filmmaker can make a movie out of nothing. It's all in your head. The art of filmmaking is one that challenges your mind and pushes you to the limit. Sometimes shooting with a cheap camera will push you to get more interesting shots. Or if you have bad audio, you just take the audio out and creatively tell a story without any. You have to start somewhere and if you just sit around beating yourself up over how everyone has better equipment than you, then you aren't going to go anywhere.
I know hw hard it is. Do you have an iPhone or a smart phone? If so, you can shoot a short film with it. Another idea is asking a friend. If you do not have that (I know phones can be expensive. ) I would write a screenplay and get someone else to shoot it (network with other filmmakers) once you do that, you will have built a relationship with said film maker and in turn you can learn a lot from them and work on set wit them. Collaborating with more experience film makers , definitely helps. You might not be hands on, but you will learn a lot.
Who's hand was that ?
Ryan, Did you test out the duel pixel technology on the C 100 Mark ii? I have the Canon 70d. The touch screen with focus control has been pretty sweet, even with the Aps-C sensor!
P. S. You should make Josh di drag fir your next sketch! #toodles
Game of Thrones reference at the end ;)))))
I'm always happy watching Film Riot. Over five years of glorious education, laughs and entertainment :)
Hi if you want to sell it let me know thanks
Film Riot Please do a review on BlackMagic Ursa and compare it to C100 M2.
I was going to get one but holy crap they are like $5000 and you need a good lens. Would anyone be able to recomend any budget cameras (under about $700) Thanks!
The best camera in that range would be a Canon T3i. Invest the rest into audio and lenses. (However, you can always rent cameras, which is what the pros do).
Paul Ocone Would that be the 600d in New Zealand? Also if it wouldn't be a problem you could recommend some good lenses and mics. I don't have a very wide knowledge of good audio gear and I normally really cheap out on lenses. Thank you!
Stoopid Second Channel Yep that's the 600d. I'd recommend a Rode Videomic Pro. You could mount it on the camera, or boom it on a monopod or speaker stand and use the Rode CV1 extension to plug it into your camera (don't buy a cheap extension - they're more painful than they're worth).
Ryan what do you think about the new Rode NTG 4 and NTG 4+?
Look great!
Im deceding between the c100 and the mark 2 for my first upgrade from DSLR. Thoughts?
+UnratedAwesomeness I'm in a similar boat as you too. Gonna hold out till December me thinks
Its a great DSLR upgrade, it's very similar but way more professional, the image quality is great plus it probably works with your dslr lenses.
Francis Lavoie so you'd recomded this for someone who wants that extra strong 'punch' from a 5D in terms of image quality?
I know the ergonomics and other features are excellent too!
Yeah the image quality is by far better than any Canon DSLR
Francis Lavoie Awesome, definitely hoping to pull the trigger and get going with the camera around December time!
C100,send it to a special fan, a Special C100, a Special Challenge ? go go go
GAME OF THRONES...
Who is the little girl? She acts so well
It's his little sister. Emily.
She is really good!
When is the Monday challenge coming
No 4K :(
That's a spicey Meatball!
I'll be shooting an indie feature, but we have a very limited budget. What exactly are the advantages of the C300 or even C500 over either version of the C100? It's hard for me to imagine the huge leap in price being justifiable (I mean, a film shot on an iPhone was accepted to Sundance), but I'm open minded if any camera experts want to answer.
The C300 shoots with a better codec/bitrate, and uses CF cards. The C500 shoot 4K.
That camera costs more than my car.
Anybody know who Emily is in relation to Ryan?
Sister
Emily should be in more episodes!! she is pretty funny!! :)
I know next to nothing about cameras. But dang that camera looks awesome.
