    I like how effectively you spend time there and focus also on sustainable harvesting of fireweed, spruce tips or pine pollen. Wonderful to watch. Always pleasant to see what you cook, too :) Looking forward for the next episode.

    Thanks for the info on the fireweed! Glad to see randy doing good and out picking. Alec, I'm sure glad you got away from that bear. You guys are an awesome group, watching out for each other. Got 60 pounds of Naturals this weekend in 30+ year logging thats just getting back to its Natural state. Stay safe and can't wait to see next weeks video!!

    Thanks for showing the edible fireweed. Wish I would have known about it when I was in the Yukon.

      It’s common in BC as well. Such an abundant plant, especially a few years after a fire as you see in this vid

    I've been making Ivan chai this season when I've been finding fireweed. Absolutely amazing how it goes from smelling like spinach when fresh to smelling like black tea.

    Do you ever ferment your fire weed? I prefer it fermented and I mix it with fermented blackberry leaf. Makes a fantastic dark tea with really nice flavor.

    How long does it keep fresh? Also, could you blance it and freeze it? Eating like frozen asparagus but keeping leaves?

    • @northernwildharvest
      @northernwildharvest  6 місяців тому

      If you keep it cool it will last up to a week fresh. Yep you could par boil and freeze but hard to do in the bush. My favourite is to bruise the leaves, ferment them and then dry them to make ivan tea.

      @@northernwildharvest Could you make it into like a kimchi with ramps or something?

    • @northernwildharvest
      @northernwildharvest  6 місяців тому +1

      Alex, one of the people in the video actually made some bush kimchi using fireweed, in one of the episodes from this series. It could be done a lot better in a real kitchen but it was still really good.

    Just a quick question. Do you test your bear spray every once in a while/keep it primed? and do you also have to update and check your bear bangers also?

    • @northernwildharvest
      @northernwildharvest  6 місяців тому +1

      Bear spray has an “expiry date” which I watch for but I doubt it actually goes bad. If the can is fired off in any way then I will no longer use it. The bear bangers I go through fast enough that it hasn’t been an issue but I carry 1 charge on my person and 2 more charges in my packboard when I go deeper in.

    Is there a taste difference between grade A and grade B, or is it just a visual difference?

    • @northernwildharvest
      @northernwildharvest  2 місяці тому +1

      A grade morels will generally have a better texture and will be cleaner. If you just want the flavour of morels and don't need a nice-looking mushroom in your recipe, then I usually use morel powder personally.

      @@northernwildharvest thanks, I ordered the whole morels for my sister who is an amazing cook and the powdered morels for my self, I do a lot of microwave things! Scrambled eggs and powdered morels with butter on sourdough toast is amazing!!! Not microwaved, stove top cooking, also adding the powder to my instapot bean soup was wonderful!
