Worked hard, payed rent, bills, food, etc, saved for a 50s tribute 2016. Worth all the patience, saving and effort. A special guitar, amazing bang per buck. Anyone sayin these are cheap and all that crap can try living on a real world budget, save for one of these and then get a grip on reality. These are fantastic guitars.

Indeed. Never could afford a true Gibson Les Paul Standard, but was lucky enough to have a little spare money when the 2016 Tributes were launched. Got the 50's Tribute (no High-Performance) in Honeyburst and love it a lot. Sounds great through my Blackstar HT-R1 Tan Bronco small stack. Working man's Les Paul, and found on Reverb that it sells used for more than it costed brand new these days. Not meaning that I'm ever gonna sell it.

    hello there captain n chappers
    scratchplates just look sad!
I love your channel, one of my absolute favourites on yt!
i would love a "history" type video/series, where you talk about brands history, materials and when and why things happend, its really fun to hear you talk so passionately about all things guitars and i think that would be great!
maybe you have done this, but i havent stumbled across any so i thought id mention it.
have a wonderful day fellows and do keep uup the good work!!

    anti scratch plate for life.

    • @Erukulon
      @Erukulon 8 років тому

+Anthony Benanti Personally, I think an ESP EC series is a better choice if you want no scratch plate and tbh, in every way really. For give or take $1000 I definitely have gotten guitars in the past decade I really would say are high quality than a Gibson of the same price range . Now that it's 2016, spending the amount of money for a new Gibson at what they cost, on top of the level of mediocrity their quality control has sunk to seems like the buyer hasn't done enough research into other guitar companies. I think a lot of people still believe Gibson is like gold standard of quality still where you can pick up pretty much any guitar of theirs and be confident it's going to great, which sadly is not the case anymore and every year they continue to cut more and more corners to where this year I'd probably think buying an Epiphone at half the price of a Gibson, and spending a bit of money upgrading it would be the wiser choice.
I'm really not trying to enrage anyone and if you like Gibson's and buy them, I don't judge. People are going to like what they like and they have that choice, however it bums me out that to me that within the past decade especially, Gibson has really seemed to have lost a lot of pride in their instruments quality and seem very entitled to charge an arm and a leg for anything with Gibson on the head stock regardless of it's quality.

It all really depends on how the LP looks as to whether a scratch plate would look good on it or not. I've got a 2014 LPJ Pro and a scratch plate would just look silly on it. In fact, on my guitar, the wear marks actually make the guitar look really cool too, same goes for my SG.

I'm guessing they put the p90s in the 60s model is because they used to put the mini buckers in a lot of the les Paul's in the 60s and a lot of people took them out and replaced them with the p90s because they sounded better and fit perfectly in the slot, Mike Ness of social distortion is a great example of this all of his les Paul's are 60s vintage les Paul with the pick ups swapped out to p90s

For those of you non-English speaking folks, the "scratch plate" he refers to is called a Pickguard.... Oh and before I watch, I LOVE my 50s T goldtop. Not being a wealthy guy, it's what I could afford and I don't regret buying it one bit. I think Gibson did a great job bringing its legendary quality to guys like myself, on a budget. These both sound fantastic especially with those Marshall amps.
As far as pickguards/scratchates go, it depends on the guitar. Some Les Pauls look great without one, some look odd without one. I think it depends on it's color, binding or no binding & is it a carved top or a flat top Les Paul.

I'm for the pick guard (scratch plates are fitted to Tele and Strat types). My right hand moves all over, but at times I steady it with the little finger on the surface - as did Gary Moore, amongst others. On flat tops like Strats, this is fine, but on arched/carved tops the strings are typically further from the surface, and the pick guard fills the gap. I agree they sometimes spoil the looks, but function beats form, always.

That first Paul that The Monkey Lord holds in his strong beefy hands is pretty farking gorgeous. In part due to its scratch plate...

Maybe I don't fee so bad for hanging on to my 2015 standard now. Also, I think this is the best video of you both playing great together.

You guys are great! I love these videos. I'm team scratchplate (although, I am a Fender guy AND an American so we call those Pickguards)

I like Rob's choices on this video! I like the 50s tone best. And I love the HP neck (tried it).

Great Job gentlemen. Can you add any commentary on the neck profiles? I am trying to find the holy grail 59 rounded profile, and pay in 1959 $. My wife overheard me watching one of your reviews and commented, "do you really take advice from these guys?". In fact, I find your reviews to be top notch. Now back to your full out assault concerning the scratch plate issues! ill be Switzerland.

for years you have been getting wrong guys. those guitars do have nitro finishes. they are non grain filled lower sheen nitro and are @ 1.5 mil thick as apposed to 6 or 7 mil on the gloss guitars.. all gibsons are finished in nitro lacquer ...

I prefer no scratch plate for looks, but I like the plate to be there when playing for my little finger to rest on.

Damn, is it just me or has Lee's playing gotten a lot better compared to some of the older videos? Not to say that it was terrible before but that opening jam was pretty nice.

PRO Pickgaurd. Big time. Give me a nice cream pickgaurd and zero pinch harmonics all day long;-) Side note to Rob: Challenge to do and entire video with no pinch harmonics at all. Can you do it;-)
