August 25th 1988 - 33 years ago, wow... AJFA was released and it marked the birth of an album with amazing prog-like songs, complexity and all but basically no bass. And 33 years later people have access to the stems and a new world of possibilities opens up all of a sudden.
This is the last song on AJFA that I needed to remix to try and bring the bass up to a more acceptable volume. Not only that, I also EQ'd with FabFilter Pro Q3 in order to boost the low frequencies of the bass. Since Jason plays with a pick, I wanted to add body to the 50-200Hz range in order to make the song even heavier. I also tweaked fine Q bands to find his harmonics and make those stand out as well, that way both the low end and high-mids are covered.
With the isolated tracks, there are a ton of ways one can mix and tweak these things in order to change how things were placed in the sound spectrum.
To celebrate the 33th anniversary of AJFA, I wanted to have a little fun and pretend Steve Harris mixed Blackened, since Iron Maiden mixes have usually louder bass mixes, which I absolutely love.

It gels really well with the lyrics. 'The Turning Point' explores the destruction of the environment, climate change and species extinction from a "humans as endangered-animals" perspective, in order to promote empathy towards innocent wildlife.

It's not that good. Bass is too loud. Every 'remix' made by amateurs have the same problem.

great, but in retro spec,,, when i first heard And Justice back in 1988, we did nt even noticed the bass was missing,,, and it kind of defined the sound of this album ,,, it s like if my brain says it needs bass, but my heart love the original sound of the album...

This version is so much better as the original version. Justice was awesome album but if I could back then hear the bass like that I would even become a bigger Jason Newsted fan!!

Excelent! I love this version you did. But it doesn't sound too much like Steve Harris, there's no beats at the microphone and that chorus sound of the iron maiden bass! This version of yours sounds more like Jason Newsted using his pick and an amplifier with ampeg sound! But it so good either way, and justice for Jason!
Hi Ennio, I totally get what you're saying. My point with Steve Harris was that I began the mix by only having the bass fader up, everything else was muted. I remember Nicko saying that Iron Maiden is centered around the bass, it is the foundation, so I followed the same rationale with this song. Thanks for stopping by, cheers!

Now I get it. In this sense, you're right. There's no doubt that this mix you did is centered on the bass. And you did it very well! My first Metallica record was and justice for all, so it's a relief to me listening this record that practically didn't have a bass, with bass no, no needing for a Metallica remix or remaster.

Yes, this is the first I've heard with the bass sounding proper.
I have away the black album and haven't bought a metallica album since. Why? I guess because it never sounded that good for bass since.
Hah. This one really puts on display some of the timing discrepancies I've noticed on Jason's playing when listening to some of the backing tracks.
This immediately reminds me of Rust in Peace. Dave maybe on the egotistical side, but the bass is VERY pronounced in Megadeth.

Andromahlius, I got the lyrics from Metallica.com and it says "whipping", all other lyrics channels also say so. Flames sort of whip, they flicker and waver. I think fire will begin whipping up, people will be forced to to a "danse macabre", trying to escape in vain, but the world will be consumed by the fire and it will become carbon/soot (blackened). The bass is too fucking loud. It doesn't make aesthetic sense in the mix, since the original guitars are already eating up so much of the low frequency end. Their scooped EQ curve can't compete with the volume level needed to make the bass parts standout (since the bass parts are just mirroring the guitars 99% of the time). It makes the guitars sound tiny, and frankly the bass parts, while played like a machine, are fucking boring.
