Today I'll be visiting the Corryvreckan Whirlpool, often considered to be the British Isles' most dangerous waters.
On Scotland’s west coast, located in a narrow strait between two islands is The Gulf of Corryvreckan, one of the most treacherous stretches of water found anywhere around the British Isles. When there are the right tidal conditions, it becomes the third-largest whirlpool in the world.
During certain tidal conditions, the Corryvreckan Whirlpool can reach speeds of up to 8.5 knots (about 10 mph or 16 km/h) and can produce waves up to 9m high with its roaring sound heard miles away.
The Corryvreckan Whirlpool is most impressive during spring tides when there is a New or Full moon. At these times there is the biggest difference between low and high tides which amplifies the strength of the currents, making the whirlpool more powerful and dramatic.
Will I survive going inside the dangerous Corryvreckan Whirlpool....?

WHO AM I?
If we haven't met before... Hi, I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!
P.S. Some of the links in this description are affiliate links that I get a kickback from.
Would you take the boat trip inside the Corryvreckan Whirlpool?!
Here's the link if you'd like to try out Shokz headphones for yourself: shokz.cc/RuthAisling
Large whirlpools are also known as maelstroms apparently.
@@duncankilburn7612 Interesting, looks like a difficult word to try and pronounce 😂
No! 🐔😆
@@duncankilburn7612 I think it's a Norwegian word but I'm not the world's greatest linguist so might be completely wrong.

Another great video Ruth, you are the best for showcasing these Scotland tours. 😀
Thanks so much Duncan, this trip was so much fun! Have you done it?
@@ruthaisling Definitely one for my to do list, along with a full scotch whiskey tour and Loch Ness.
Ruth, one of your very best videos! So much rich content, so much personality infused into your work,,, thanks, from the U.S.!
Wow, thanks Doug!
Hi Ruth thanks for the video. This was very interesting and hearing about the whirlpool was great, can only imagine how dangerous it could be if anyone was caught up in them. 👍👍👍👍
I wouldn't like to be in a rowing boat!
Love your videos! Really look forward to them every Sunday evening. Reminds me of my younger days in Scotland - great times. I think all videos should be narrated with a beautiful soft Scottish Edinburgh lilt- look forward to the next one as ever.
Thank you so much. Makes me so happy to hear you enjoy the videos so much!
These are The Isles I didn’t get to see while living in Scotland! Beautiful! Thank You for your time!
Love Islay and Jura! If you get the chance to visit sometime, I recommend it!
Best vlogs of Scotland Ruth love the Captains Accent we understood what he saying Mahalo
Thanks Edwin!
What another stunning video. Brilliant scenery, brilliant content and brilliantly presented. The videos just get better and better.
That's so nice of you to say, thank you!
What a treat it is when a new video of yours arrives!! All thoughts of holidays abroad are banished after watching you showcasing beautiful, wild Scotland :)
I had a dram of Ardbeg Corryvreckan while watching your episode to celebrate your experience. Great video today. Cheers to you!
Haha brilliant, I've yet to try that one, how is it?
@@ruthaisling it’s my favorite offering from Ardbeg. It’s has like a peppered steak taste from the smoke that changes into a coffee and black fruit finish. It’s very very good. I definitely recommend trying it when you have a chance.
@@dmrich920 Ok I will definitely look for it next time I am in a whisky bar, thanks!
Once sailed through Corryvreckan. Our speed increased from 14 knots to 22 knots whilst caught in the tidal flow. Then going against the flow it decreased to just 11.
Very good to know, that answers my question in the video haha!
That’s a good hike Ruth 7 miles, right now I am two weeks into recovery from a knee replacement op. I hope to be out walking in the near future , it’s nice to watch you out exploring our beautiful wee country ❤️
It was a long one! I hope your recovery goes well and isn't too long!
The scenery is so stunning! Thanks for sharing Ruth
It really is, especially when the weather is nice!
Another fabulous video
Thank you so much Melanie!
Oooh how lovely! Can’t wait to see this. I keep checking UA-cam to see if you’ve posted another video and this evening I’m delighted to see one!! 😃😃

Hello Ruth, you know what they say "never under estimate the power of water" a very interesting video. You were very lucky that ever thing worked out just right for you, I had never heard of this Whirlpool until to-day. Regards. Andrew.
I'm glad we were in that powerful boat!
The reason almost all of rural Scotland is not covered in trees are herbivores i.e. deer, sheep, rabbits etc.
What a lovely trip. This is the best wee spell of weather we've had all year! Seeing the dolphins was such a surprise and a real treat too.
It was so lovely and very unexpected, I was caught out getting sunburnt haha! Seeing the dolphins was. so amazing!
Sunburned in Scotland and in September..almost sounds like an old myth!

Hi Ruth, it’s only me, thank you for putting up this Vlog/video so quickly after seeing your one yesterday ~ as you know I love your channel and I get to go run parts of Scotland that I know now I will never see - I love your content and your filming and photography is great - I hope you have a good week - sending loads of love and hugs as always ~ Xxx Xxx
Hi Louise, thanks for your comment! I'm so glad you enjoy all the video. I hope you will like this one and seeing the dolphins!! They are SO cute!
Loved it! Thanx Ruth, what an adventure, beautiful scenery and wild ride! You are truly fearless, I would have been sooo afraid 😂
Haha, I think it was a good idea not to watch any videos of being inside the whirlpool before I went on the boat!
Awesome thanks Ruth.
Thanks for watching Sean!
Another 'dramn' fine adventure, Ruth !
Keep them rolling pkease !!!
Thanks Andy!
Just beautiful, thank you!
Thanks Vicky!
Ruth, what a brilliant trip this was sharing Jura and the whirlpool. I never knew of this place before. I always learn so much from your channel, and wish my Dad (who would now be 98 years old) was still alive to learn with me. Good luck with your travel group - I wish I could have signed up - but hopefully the next trip! Have a good Sunday...aka Nancy Alison
Thanks very much Nancy, no worries about the group trip! I'll be posting lots more videos her eon UA-cam for you to enjoy. It's so nice you have connections to so many places in Scotland!
My ancestors are from Jura, this is a real treat to see your video.
Oh wow! Did they leave Scotland for North Carolina? I read a plaque at the beach there last year about how they loaded the boats which left for North Carolina. I suggest you to watch the other video I made about Jura so you can see the beach, maybe that’s the exact point your ancestors left from!
Great video!!! The whirlpools were so amazing!
Absolutely!! It was so amazing to be up close!
Wow! Wow! Wow! What beautiful scenery and adventures! You go girl!!!!
Thanks so much!
Amazing video, amazing country thank you Ruth , Brilliant as always, the whirlpool looks amazing too .
Thanks Irwin!!
Another great video thank you? Those whirlpools looked amazing 🙏
Thanks for watching, they were so amazing to see up close!
You make the best videos! This one was so informative and interesting!!❤
Thank you so much! ❤
The reasons for there being no woodland stem indirectly from the Act of Union. 1. The huge Caledonian Forest was gradually cut down to provide timber for the wooden warships of the growing 'British" navy, not just timber for the actual frames, decks and planking but also for the masts and spars, etc. The trees were cut and floated down rivers to the coast. And of course the British navy was huge. 2. Following the Jacobite risings we had the clearings. The indigenous people and their ragged cattle were cleared from the land to make way for sheep (which eat the tops out of young saplings, and for sporting estates for the new rich (industrial revolution) - they paid gamekeepers to annually carry out planned burnings of the hills and moors to provide new growth heather for grouse to feed on.
Thanks for sharing more details about this topic.
Ruth, Another brilliant video.
Thank you Ian!
good video, liked the way you explained how the whirlpools are formed.
Thanks!
A wonderful video and I love your enthusiasm for telling the tales and history of your adventures... keep them coming. PS I laughed that you managed to get a Wee Dram into this Vlog.
Haha I didn't even know there would be any whisky involved, it wasn't planned!
Great video Ruth! Weather looked fantastic! 🌤 along with the whirlpool, 🌊 you sure get your exercise as well, you don’t need to anything else 🏋️
Haha it was a decent hike and took me about 9 hours in the end with all the filming! I was a bit tired after that 😂
@@ruthaisling wow 9 hours! ⏳That’s definitely good for your health 👩⚕️
@@TerryCristopher Haha yeah quite a few stops and chatting to people too 🤣
I absolutely love your videos. Thank you so much!
Glad you like them!
I've done that walk and can highly recommend it. Very few people who actually live on Jura have been to the very north of the island.
It’s a wonderful walk, long long way though!
Another whirlpool that is more reliable as it happens on the Flood and Ebb tides is the "Falls of Lora" at the Conell bridge near Oban where the Loch Etive fills and empties, Jimmy Kilcullans boat the "Charna" sunk at its mooring in Loch Etive. His dive boat took us to just about every island on the West coast, even out to St Kilda, Ruth you have to go out and give it a try, for one of your vids, don't forget your seasick tablets though, you might get a lift out when the "National Trust" go out to do work in Village bay.
Thanks for sharing about the Falls of Lora. Please keep an eye out for my next video... I have a feeling you might enjoy it! 😉
Wow, that looked amazing. I was lucky enough to travel to Islay and Jura many years ago. I now want to go back to do that boat trip.
I totally recommend it. I guess it's difficult to plan with the weather but if you can, try and go!
Wow, you were so lucky to be there at the right time to experience this phenomenon, it seems incredible, what a great experience 😅
It was so lucky! My friend from Islay told me about the trip and I looked it up and there was a 3-day window with spots available so I booked it!
A beautiful hike and so glad your boat trip worked out. You Are braver than I; not my cup of tea at all. Still, a fascinating place with a storied past. Thanks for the lovely trip. :)
Thanks Eric!
Amazing video,love watching it.
Thanks so much!
I was there thursday on a trip, there was a pair of white tailed sea eagles over the corryvreckan when we were out, we all got great weather on the west coast last week!
Oh wow, how amazing! 😍
Well done Ruth, you are brave, no “Stugeron?” Hoho. That was a good hike as well, no wonder you had that fantasist sandwich! Great content as always, very interesting👍👍Cheers Mike🥃🥃
Haha no I don’t take any before this trip! I asked on the phone when booking and they said people don’t usually get sea sick 😊
This whirlpool was featured in an excellent 1945 film called "I know where I'm Going" starring Wendy Hiller and Roger Livesey. Great movie. This might be a great title for your travel vids!
Oh interesting, I must give it a watch sometime. Thanks for sharing about it!
Hi Ruth that was really great
.
Thanks Kevin!
So beautiful x
Thanks for watching! ❤️
I love these videos. We don't have many places to walk in Malta
Oh really? I've never been to Malta, but I heard you have nice food there!
Banging
Fantastic Ruth. I come from the area, the Coire Bhreacain is not to be messed with in bad weather.
Have you ever heard it roaring?
Yes it's possible to sail through the Corryvreckan, you just need to allow for the tide times, sailed by the Corryvercreckan quite a few times but I've never needed to sail through it.
Good to know!
Amazing 😊 Lucky with the weather 😮
So lucky! My neck and arms were not enjoying the sunburn afterwards though haha!
Sweet Ruth..such a nice accent.. always a pleasure 🎉🎉
Haha thanks!
@@ruthaisling my sister lives in England..and i will never go back ...but Scotland and Ireland...mucho Bueno.... The best thing to come out of England was Austin Powers..
And that was actually part Canadian 😁 Cheers from Florida
Good to see Shokz spend the money they make on their headphones on one of my fav UA-camrs :) I have the OpenRun in red. Great set.
I love them! Been using them so much ❤️
Have you ever been on the PS Waverley? It's the last sea-going paddle steamer boat and its amazing. It goes from Glasgow Clyde to various locations, including corryvreckan :) I think you'd love it!
No I haven't! Thanks for the recommendation, it sounds amazing!
Went on Waverley through Correyvrekan in May and it was pretty lively. It depends on tides and wind so not always lively.
I had sailed through the Corryvreckan quite a few times when diving around that area, and when on our camping trip in Norway we made an excursion in inclement weather with my wife. I decided to visit the second best whirlpool in the world the " Mailstrom" supposed to be a lot larger than the Corryvreckan, we stood on the bridge looking out at the whirlpool in the lashing rain except it was the smallest tide of the year and, to be honest, I could pee faster.. DOH!
Oh wow, that's a shame the second biggest whirlpool wasn't performing on the day you visited! 😂
Cool, Ruth! Thanks for showing!
Thanks for watching! ❤️
Breathtaking and so beautiful! Thank you for your wonderful videos! You're so much fun to follow! Your lovely 'afterglow' tells it all. Such a brave adventurer you are Ruth! So sadly romantic learning the legend about the Viking prince dying there trying to win a princess' heart. Sniffle, sniffle.
Thank you so much! I do wonder if that legend is true!
@ruthaisling Chivalry seems to be a thing of the past. Maybe why it interests me so much. Such courage and determination. And, you seem to have that in common with the young lad! You're amazingingly brave to me.
I'm currently reading a book called The Lost Rainforests of Britain by Guy Shrubsole. There are only a few small areas left and five are in Scotland, in a cluster about half way up the west coast:
Ballachuan Hazlewood, Argyll
Glen Nant, Argyll
Glasdrum, Argyll
Lost Valley, Glen Coe, Highlands
Ariundle Oakwood, Highlands
Technically a rainforest is where plants grow on other plants but not as parasites and despite the small amount left pretty much all of Western Scotland is shown on the map in the book as a suitable habitat for them.
Aside from all that, most of Britain was covered by the Wildwood from the last ice age until a few thousand years ago when those awful humans started chopping them down. Almost all of our "natural" landscape is actually artificial including what we think of as untouched wilderness.
That sounds like a very intersting book, I'll try and get a copy of it to read, thank you so much for sharing more information about this. It's a question I keep seeing come up in the comments.
So very cool and yet so dangerous , great stuff.
Thanks for watching Glen!
Equally beautiful and scary! I would love to visit your amazing country!
Hope you can visit sometime!
Wow! You are a real trooper 🎉🎉 No way I’d be that close to the whirlpool 😂
Haha it was a bit scary but also so exciting!
Really interesting!
Glad you think so!
Hello Ruth, very interesting video with amazing views to the whirlpool Corryvreckan, Thanks, do you know that there is also a Whisky from Ardbeg called Corryvreckan? Enjoy the Sunday evening.
Take care Uwe
Someone else commented about it, sounds great. I'll give it a try next time I am in a whisky bar. Have you tried it and do you like it?
@@ruthaisling Yes, I like. I’m a fan of Islay Whisky. You should also try the new one from Ardnahoe distillery. I like too. Cheers or better Slàinte Mhath

Thanks a lot 😊
Never go on a "Three Hour Tour" at sea if there is a chance the weather getting rough! This probably applies to whirlpools during calm weather as well.
The skipper is very experienced! I'm sure he checked the weather carefully!
@@ruthaisling As long as the Skipper does not call the first mate "Little Buddy" then you should be OK...
Brilliant another Ruth upload 👌, i heard that the lack of tall trees generally across all of 🇬🇧 is mainly due to the demands of the British Navy, as well as land clearances for agriculture. Eg, the Royal navy at its peak of Sailing wooden built fleets were using mostly lumber from Canada 🇨🇦 and the 🇺🇸, because we'd run out already. ❤ 🐬 your channel 😊 👣
Interesting, thanks for sharing more information about this!
Incredible!! Hold on! 😊
I was holding on for dear life haha!
Morning from Hawaii that was a good video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice video, as always! If you would like to know how it is sailing the Corryvreckan, you should read Björn Larsson's "The Celtic Ring". A wonderful thriller happening at and on Scotland's coasts and waterways.
Given the fact that the author is sailor, you will get a quite realistic impression.
You will love the book, promised!
Wow, sounds brilliant. I will look for that book. Thanks for the recommendation!
you haven't seen anything of it, got the dinghy from easdale , there where whirl pools just like plug holes 30 feet in diameter and the pilot took us round the edge, you could look down into it!, just love Scotland
Wow sounds so scary!

Did you try the whisky on the boat Ruth? I love Islay whiskys.
I so wanted to, but had to drive after!
You can sail through provided the tides are right but many yachtman including me take an alternative route.
Would you go round the side of it or avoid it all together?
You can get a boat from Oban to see them, I was going to do it one day but the girlfriend wanted to see seals instead so we went to seal island
I hope you managed to see some seals 👀
