Contrarians! Show idea! Bands that reference themselves somehow,Iike when Zep put out a song called Houses of the Holy although they already had an album by that name.

I am surprised no one brought up Dokken and the endless battle between Don and George + Jeff/Mick. Did it improve the work or just create excuses for not being able to weather changes in the music industry.

Great topic, if possible see if this theme could be extended to Parts 2 & 3.
    Thank you very much again.

Competition is good in almost any context. But I don’t think actual conflict ever helps. Lots and lots of bands simply don’t get along so the odds are darn good that if you really like an album you can point to fighting, but that doesn’t mean the goodness came from that, it almost surely came in spite of that. And there are just too many examples of bands who get along great that make great music. In fact, most bands get along best early on and deteriorate from there and most fans also generally prefer the early catalogs of bands. So I just don’t see any argument that it’s better if there’s conflict. As a Rush fan I sure never wished for them to hate each other to see what it did to their music. The guys in Pink Floyd were at their most peaceful during the Dark Side recording. They all contributed and got along great. The flip side is The Final Cut. There are just too many examples like that to offset the argument, I think.

Which Van Halen "book" is being mentioned in their statements. I love and have read "Van Halen Rising", but I think this one must've covered more or the later part of their career.

Personal conflicts and ego wars make worse albums. Artistic conflicts can make fascinating albums when the band members are mature as long as their are not "too many cooks spoiling the broth."

After a certain point in this discussion I felt like everyone should have started to fight and curse and then The Contrarians hire a therapist 😂

When bands really hate each other, they don't exist anymore

I think 1984 by Van Halen was a great record that rose above the acrimony behind the scenes. The negativity that went on didn’t affect its power.
The Elder by KISS... they weren't in a great headspace. Ace made 0 effort to participate in person or argue with Gene and Paul about the quality of the music and direction. That said, even if Ace went all in, the album would likely have still been a commercial dud.
