I am an 82 year old white guy who never considered himself at all racist, but have become, i think, more so in the past couple of years given the actions, “leadership” of black groups and the Democratic Party - we must all be going crazy. Listening to you, your show, its direction and guests is bringing back my former sense of balance. Thank you

Loury, Rowe, and McWhorter once again bring the most substantive discussions of these complicated issues. Their contribution to our thought and analysis of black American thought, politics, and public policy is indispensable. It is a privilege to be able to listen to their conversations. The effect of these conversations will be much greater than any of the three can imagine. What I admire about John McWhorter is he is unwilling to demonize his opponents, rather, he tries to understand them. He is not trying to be self-righteous; he is trying to get it right. McWhorter is relentlessly intellectually honest.

Someone has said this before me: Dr. Loury is fantastic at summarizing (steel manning) the other side. When he does this, it is extremely important because it compels the panel/guests to answer and hopefully answer to a legitimate criticism of their own position. Only those committed to finding a good path forward could be amenable to this.

He is good at doing this regarding the left wing, but the more moderate positions amongst the Democratic Party he seems to neglect. It's like he became disillusioned of the progressive left and now feels that the right is the only appropriate home for him. One example is him referring to Obama as "socialist," then modifying his description later but not fairly representing Obama's views, which tend to be quite centrist on many topics.
Choosing to ignore obvious signs of improvement. So true. Not only is it not correct n not helpful,I've yet to hear how even if we had agreement that there wasn't a plan that would make anything better. Ian Rowe is a school board member in my town. I had no previous awareness of him beyond that but I liked what he said during his campaign and gladly voted for him. After hearing this conversation, I realize how blessed we are to have him.

This was one of the best shows of all. Ian Rowe is so spot on. Please note the other cities like San Fran that have changed so much like Seattle, Portland, Austin, Mpls. And Chicago. BLM brought harm to some of these communities and Sharpton was in the thick of it all, and yes for money and spotlight not progress. We all need to keep up the fight. Thank you for such enlightenment.
I have listened to talk radio for decades. There were several popular local talk show hosts out of San Fran. The one late night black guy was very liberal, and when I heard him bash Sharpton, and Jackson, I figured, wow, for him to bash them they must be baaaad.
Everyone around me thought they were great.
I listen to Brandon Tatum. He is a kick. I am more lib, not Christian but he is so honest, down to earth and that is so refreshing.
I always say ... when white people speak on these matters, I first present to them the facts.. if you would had delt with your white racism, and police harassment we would not have these issues.
I saw Dr. Kendi speak at the Unitarian Universalist Association meeting in Portland last year. He said nothing. Not just nothing I could not predict, but nothing. Many words, no meaning. It is a shame.

As I listen to you, I energized and encouraged even as I recover via retirement from the ever more woke public education system that I escaped. My hope is for my young adult sons who are in a public university. I pray that they don’t succumb to the doctrine of despair and victimhood that is so often promulgated in their school.
The reason why your show is so popular is easy to answer.
It’s because you all speak to truth and reality.

Ironically, the Guardian newspaper had an article today on how things weren't really that bad in San Francisco. Even though they admitted practically everyone who lives there disagreed. It was like the Monty Python Dead Parrot skit.

The end of this podcast was really inspiring. People need to realize they control the direction of their own life. Even if there were outside forces trying to stop them, in the end, each of us have the ability to overcome whatever is in our way
I'm a white woman, 71 years old. A nurse, retired. I've listened to you three. I'm sitter here in Southern Appalachia. Looking back the War on Poverty I believe , it helped people in some ways, it hurt in others. I've got a lot out what you all are saying. I voted for Obama the first time. I sat out the 2012 election. I was a born and bred Democrat. My daddy was a coal miner. I know the Democrat party has left me behind. I'm not a Republican. I think of myself as an Independent. Maybe I'm just too old. I seriously think that women are going to lose their rights to the transwomen. This is happening so fast.
They already are. I too left the democratic party. I am a independent. I voted biden but sat out of trump clinton. I think this country is in trouble and it cant continue like it is. The negativity and tension are intense

The great Dr. Martin Luther King famously voiced his earnest prayer "I have a dream that one day, my children will not be judged by the colour of their skin, but by the goodness of their character ". Let me explain something to you, since you don't know any better you're from the UK.
MLK was not the de facto black leader, he was a civil rights activists in the South. Not all black people followed him.
Especially in the North and eastern cities.
And what do you mean his works. Do you understand one of the reasons why Lyndon Johnson enacted the 1968 Civil Rights Act. Was because every single city in the United States was on fire when MLK died. There were riots all over the United States.
In fact, going back when m.l.k. was alive, in the 1965 Watts Riots. Every single black person that was at that meeting with m.l.k. argued with him and did not like his nonviolent stance..
And finally. Before m.l.k. even started in the Civil Rights Movement. Mlk was talking about being violent in the very beginning, he was talked out of it by Bayard Rustin..

What an amazing conversation. Everyone is great. Really enjoying listening to their guest Ian. This is such a needed conversation before our nation falls off the cliff with self induced injuries that will destroy our country and divide the “United”States of America that has always been a melting pot. But there is so much anger over past transgression and the media and politicians are all too eager to fan the flames of divide. We can’t go forward by looking in the rear view mirror.
We need a leader (and a Media)who brings pride back to the country, with a vision for our nation that builds us back up instead of turning us against each other and tearing us down.

Just focus on the Triumph. If we remember in the 1940's Japanese American's were kept in camps in America but you never hear from a Japanese American on that as a hold back in their current condition.
The Asian culture focuses on Family, Faith and Education which are the pillars of success.

Behind the raised fist of Malcolm X was the universal message that any race can embrace - educational achievement, avoidance of drugs / alcohol, wholesome food consumption, and being a role model father for your children. If he were alive today he would not only be deemed to be unworthy of a race spokesperson - he would be shouted down and deplatformed….

This was an amazing discussion. I've just watched it for the second time!
I was a professor at a University program designed to help primarily African American students earn a college degree. The program's primary narrative was that as a black American you are a victim, in fact your victimization is inescapable because it is preserved in your genes. As a biologist I strongly assert that there is no such thing but what shocked me the most was the utter commitment to this victimization narrative. In the end despite being given everything for free, including tuition, books, laptop, breakfast and lunch, tutors, counseling, etc, students for the most part performed poorly and the program is a failure and only persists for political reasons and because it pretends to succeed by having abysmally low academic standards.
I built a lab and hired students to work with me. Just about every one of those student went on to graduate and is now professional in the sciences. However, I dared to question the victimization narrative and was shown the door. I left academia.
What this program demonstrates is that even when you remove all the barriers, if you continue to foster a culture of victimization, you will fail, or worse, you pretend to succeed.
Excellent explanation of your experience and it just adds proof that the victimization is fed via propaganda media, no one has to eat it but they never stop pounding it into everyone's minds and it eventually wears most people down to anger[of any race]

You make a great point. Nothing is more disabling than victimhood. People perform best when they are challenged. Oppression did not stop Jewish or Chinese achievements. But victimhood rhetoric causes people to stop taking self responsibility for their own excellence.

I think most people are motivated when they hear a positive testimony and hear about progress. The current rhetoric "tears down" rather than "builds up". We should be edifying one another, not tearing into one another. Wagging a finger and shaming someone does not give good results. Sharing ideas, walking beside one another, and motivating one another to step up to the next level is how progress takes place. THANK YOU to each of you. Keep up the good work!

The woke religion has a different explanation for original sin. They claim it has no supernatural origin, but exists only in certain people, due to the color of their skin. This is clearly a religious claim and it’s appropriate to reject forced compliance on those grounds alone. But having the backing that it violated the tenets of Christianity is certainly another excellent avenue to combatting it

As a black male, I am completely agreed with your line of thought, for I am voicing it to whoever will listen. What I don’t think you get is that intact families, low crime, self-reliability, self-responsibility, high academics, and patriotism are left values as well. In this complex world, all is not binary and ideas can fall across borderlines. These attitudes must be sermonized to us from the left by McWhorter types and not from the right, because, owing to history, the words, “conservative” and “right” send us scrambling.
Well said. Glenn’s opinion on Clarence Thomas is just too hard to swallow, though. I am a fan of the show, and it is refreshing to hear differing thoughts from good people.
I think they are generally speaking about self anointed black leaders who "speak" for black America. NAACP, Kendi, BLM, Sharpton. In the case of BLM they explicitly advocate for the end of the nuclear family. BLM and each of the other demonize law enforcement. Ian said it best, it's the well intended but grossly misguided policies that are holding back progress within the black community. I believe generally speaking whether you're "right" or "left" we want the same thing. Success of all. Unfortunately it gets hijacked by elite folks who don't really want that. The real question is HOW do we get to where we want to be when most people agree on the goal.
I agree with you that a lot of left-leaning people hold those values, but I believe the woke-wing of the party does not. They want to destroy the nuclear family and destabilize things so that they can gain enough control to remake the country. Well meaning liberals who support intact families, low crime, self-reliability, self-responsibility, high academics and patriotism need to stand up and not let them.
High academics is definitely not anything the left wants, they want regulated ignorance, and no in-depth knowledge that might challenge their ideology, just look at the educational system at present, the level of knowledge of students has never been so low.

This was one of the best episodes of the Glenn show I have ever seen. I have some thoughts on the final question raised by Glenn.
I think there are a couple of significant differences between Barack Obama and Clarence Thomas, apart from ideology. Barack Obama is a politician. He is flexible. He is someone who is comfortable (or at least willing) to temper his positions to make them more politically palatable. For instance, Obama was opposed to same sex marriage right up until the point it was safe for his position to “evolve.” He is also an excellent public speaker. Say what you will, but the man can give a speech. He appears to be comfortable living his life in public.
Clarence Thomas on the other hand is a much different, much more private person. I don't know him personally, but did get to speak to him briefly when he gave a speech he gave at my law school. This was in 1997, more than 5 years after his vicious confirmation fight. It was obvious from some of the things he said that he was still angry over it. For instance, during his speech, he said he wasn't allowed to believe the things he believed because of the color of his skin. Up to that point, there had been a tendency for Republican appointees to the Supreme Court to move toward the center over time. For instance, compare the early opinions of Justice O'Connor and Justice Kennedy with some of their later ones. But listening to Justice Thomas speak, I recall thinking that there was very little chance he would moderate his positions over time. He wouldn't want to give his critics the satisfaction. Justice Thomas has demonstrated that he is not willing to modify any of his beliefs in order to be more popular.
One of the fundamental difference between how the public sees President Obama and Justice Thomas is that Thomas generally speaks through his opinions while Obama speaks by speaking. As a recovering lawyer deeply interested in constitutional law, I find it frustrating that the news media, not to mention the public, only seems to care about the outcome of a case as opposed to the reasoning behind that outcome. Add to that the general left wing bias of the media that results in numerous stories about Justice Thomas' heartless rulings. So most of the public doesn't hear the reasoning behind his rulings. I think that to many people, Justice Thomas is just a Black man that sold his soul to heartless Republicans and doesn't care about other Black people.
There is another difference between Barack Obama and Clarence Thomas that might explain some of the differences in how the public sees them. In the early 1990s, P.J. O'Rourke wrote an article titled “100 Reasons Why Jimmy Carter Was A Better President Than Bill Clinton.” One of those reasons was that Jimmy Carter had a much nicer wife. It has become increasingly clear over the last couple of years that Barack Obama has a much nicer wife than Justice Thomas. Until the very end of the Trump administration, I wold have said that Obama benefited from the high regard the American people have for Michelle, but that Ginni didn't detract from how the public saw Justice Thomas. Well the public other than racists that objected to his marrying a white woman at least. That is no longer the case. By embracing the stolen election nonsense, Ginni Thomas has made it easier for Democrats to argue that Justice Thomas is all about achieving conservative results rather than following the law and constitution as he understood it. It has also probably made the damage from the allegations that he has had an improper relationship with billionaire Harlan Crow worse than it would otherwise have been. But that story is still in progress. Still, I would advise anyone who has a spouse on a short list for the Supreme Court to NOT pursue a career as a political operative.
