- On tour last year I scored two Marshall JCM800 Bass speaker cabinets to go with my JCM800 Bass Series 100W Model 1992 Amplifier and 50W Model 1986 Amplifiers. I hadn't had a chance to open them up and verify the speakers inside until now.
It was very cool to see all the original matching 15" and 12" Celestion Sidewinders inside these cabs and in great condition.
I've also modified the heads to be a little more practical and much more versatile. The mods currently consist of the addition of a pre-phase and post-phase inverter master volume. The pre-phase master volume is also on a pull switch that engages some extra gain to get some great distortion from this beast.
Fast forward about five minutes in if you just want to hear the amp and not listen to me ramble on!

Oh hell yeah. I'm not even a bass player but I love some marshall goodness. Those guys that ran bass through Marshalls all sounded killer - Lemmy, jack Bruce, the dude in free... The list rocks on

I've had one of these since 1995, played 500+ shows with it. Never really understood much about amps so I turned everything on 10, left it there and went for it. Love it.

I haven't seen one of those heads, but I have the 4-12 Sidewinder ported cab dated 1989 with bass series speakers.
There is also a guitar Sidewinder series speaker that has a different surround on it for six string lead guitar.
Apparently, this was Celestion's version of an EV speaker. I also read that guitar players love those 800 bass speakers for tuned down stuff. What I'm curious about is how many albums that we've heard that the Bassist used these speakers and amp on?
Johan Segeborn used one of those 4x15" Cabs on a JTM and it sounded unbelievable. Best cab I've ever heard on a guitar
That's a very different animal. I have some 4x15's here but they are all early 70's and have different drivers than the JCM800 Bass Series cabinets. The 15's in these have sidewinders. The model 1979 cabs had G-50M speakers until the late 70's and then they went to a 100W driver. Thanks for watching! Those are all great cabs!
Damn, that rig sounds killer. The mods make this thing so much more useful. I used to run bass through my old 1980 JCM 800 1959 model. It worked great. Running it through a cab rated for higher wattage soaked up enough of the power that you could dial in some grit at an acceptable volume. I basically just treated it like a non master volume SVT.

Bought this amp 10 years ago, used it as a guitar amp, but was never really satisfied with how it sounded. Switched to a Peavey JSX, but always wanted to add a bass amp into the mix and run it in parallel with the JSX to get a beefier sound, and wanted to sell this amp and buy an Ampeg, but now watching this video, it might have been that I just never had the chance to crank it. The master mod could actually make all of this work. Thank you!

Ohh man, this goes back to sick goth music from 80ties with The Mission, The Sisters of Mercy, etc. back and the bottom end just rips everything in pieces. On the stage this must be a challenge for the guitar to cut through unless mid-range / treble voiced Marshall's are used to. This such an amazing amp and playing. Congrats mate!

I almost think it sounds better on the recording than in the room. Usually with guitar amps I have to do a little high passing and cut some of the boxy sounding stuff out but I tracked both of these cabs with a flat EQ and they sound great. Thanks!
I was bands in the 80s and we played Marshall' JCMs, but way back then, we just played through stuff, not like today where everyone breaks the amps down to component level, and obsessed over the specs (which is cool, but we did not care). It's funny because we did crank them (this was the hair metal days) and we played larger venues. There were days our amps (and us) sounded better, which might have been dirty power or voltage fluctuations. But those were awesome amps. I actually switched to a Hiwatt 100W head and used a DOD 'American Metal' box (those were awesome), chorus, flsnger, echo, etc. Nothing too fancy. Those were fun days...

Nice rig! What a monster sound! I would bet that every Guitar player who sees and hears that stack wants to plug into it and dime that fukker, cuz that's a bullet-proof set-up for a rhythm guitarist rig, too. I also play Marshalls, but my rig is a little bit different. I have a pair of JCM800 Bass Series cabs that are Model #1553, making each a 300w. 2x10" & 1x15" set-up, and I run them with the seldom-seen Marshall Integrated Bass System rackmount heads, which I am lucky enough to have 3 of, 2@ Model 3540, (circa 1984/5), which are 400w. and 1@model 3560- (circa 1987) 25/50 Silver Jubilee Series 600w. These heads are some of the most versatile ever produced from Marshall as each head basically has 2-200w. or 2-300w. amps inside, Like an A/B or L/R set-up, great for bi-amping. The heads all have MASTER volumes, crossover range adjusts, XLR-D.I. outs, effect send/recieve loops, plus a bunch more features, BUT...One of the BEST features on these heads is they all have 4 speaker outs-2 for each of the A/B sides, which makes running stereo a whole new experience, know that! Any one of these heads into these 2 cabs makes for a rig that has that "Rip-your-face-off", demolition quality that us Bass guys love! I'd say my sound is alot like a Grand piano being played with sledgehammers: Clear as a bell and thunderous as hell! Thanks for showing us all what you are leveling neighborhoods with!

I have this amp which I rebuilt into a lead series. I was so confused back then because it was labelled as "1992" model which the same with the jmp super bass. Mine now roars as a modded Jcm800 lead spec

I use a marshall major stock 1978 bass head circa 1972 through 2 tall 2x15's....epic sound with my precisions, jazzes and ricks.
I had Marshall Major 200 Watt head it actualy put out 300+ watts hard to find them also the HIWATT 200 Bass heads
Great head, highly underrated. And the mods are fantastic, they seem to make it way more versatile! Btw, can you please give me (us) some tips on the mods? Like the pots values for the pre- and post-PI MV, and what does the gain mod go (changing the value of the resistor in the cold clipper?). Want to try them soon on my jcm800 1992. You need to try the 2001 bass head actually part of the jcm 800 range but it dose not say it on the panel it’s only in the first catalog . They were 375rms but have features the 50 and 100 base heads did not have. The 2001 had split channel which was foot switchable, send return, Di, master volume and compressor. Interestingly it had std output sockets and looking output sockets. The mains lead was also locking on the amp. Marshall could not supply me a spare mains lead 12months after purchase. Most 2001 have had the amp converted to a iec mains socket it dose not fit properly and looks odd.
The down side of the 2001 was only 8 or 4 ohm output, the weight and cost full price was around £700 in 1983, I got my unit new on sale for £300 I believe it had been discontinued hence the price. I made the mistake of selling it. Later I found out less than 100 were made. The std 280w 4x12 cabs could not handel the power, I should have bought the 400w 4x12 cabs but at 18 I did not know mutch on the tech side. I replaced it with a Jubilee head and matching 2x15.
In 86 the valve bass amps were replaced by the Ibs range, then in 87 the jubilee Bass range. The DBS replaced the ibs and Jubilee bas range. The Vba 400 valve ran along side the DBS range for a while and was cheaper even though full valve.
I bought a Jcm800 Bass head and sold it, it’s not a patch on the 2001. May be it’s as you point out it’s non master volume, I was also disappointed with the Vba, I was expecting a up to date 2001 with the Vba, I prefers my IBS 400 head to the Vba
The 2x15 cabs for that matches the Jcm 800 valve is quite rare, there was the Ibs version which is a lot more common. They look very similar.
The bass/treble knobs on these are actually a baxandall active tone stack, so the bass and treble knobs can actually boost or cut.
I play mine through a 1937 2x12. No mods on mine. The slope control is a great tone shaper
i'm more familiar with more modern bass rigs but it sounds like a mix of ampep and hartke but with a way more organic frequency response. Killer toness, playing andd knowledge.
Nice review man, do you have a schematic of the mods that have been made? Our bass player is about to buy that model and it would be nice for our band to do that mods because you need to crank it up to get good tone 😁

I own a peavey 5150. Saw your repair video. I love my Peavey. I had it since my teenage years. How ever it nolonger works. It turns on but no sound.

The 12" is definitely a guitar speaker, it generates a lot of distortion in the bass range.
The 14" would go lower, and have thigher/cleaner low range if you add a 5" pvc plumbing tube in the "vent" to lower its tuning frequency. Probably between 6-8" inch long. It will help its power handling too
Sidewinder speakers were made with both cloth and paper cones. Paper cones were for guitar, cloth was for bass. Just figure out which you have and you’re solid.
No, port tuning does not change frequency in relation to depth. Surface area matters, on paper and in real life. I have spent some time irl testing this, but I guess that you should do your own research if you want to dispute my findings and the published work of others.
@@hoboroadie4623 Sorry, but you're wrong. At fixed vent area, and volume box, if you add depth to the vent tube, you lower vent frequency. It's basic bass reflec box tuning, you'll find the équations in the Dickason book, you may also simply use WinISD software. I did a lot of my own research : I'm a professional speaker design and build, owning my company.

You would think that with all the walls of Marshall Amps in the 80's and 90's, that there would be tons more of these so that a whole band, bassist included, was playing Marshalls.

They were using guitar amps with bass speakers or even guitar speakers and the tech would replace them if they were blown out :D it was rock 'n roll, not like todays when you are told: you can do this, you can't do that.

I have a jcm800/100watt bass amp, can it be moded for a Lead to use with electric guitar for 80's rock tones? Right now it is great with pedals.
Yes it can but the PCB's are not identical. It would likely be easier to replace the circuit board. Although I would advise against it since the Bass Series amps are rare when compared to the availability of Lead Series amps. The front panel controls are very different between Lead and Bass versions also so the front panel would no longer make sense.
Hey would you consider making some high quality IR captures of these speakers? I’d fork over some cash to get some authentic IRs!!! Sounds so good.

Hey man I love your channel....you know about an older peavy 4x12s cab with aluminum dust center covers with black dots in the center?....is that a good cab?. I can get it for 100$. Any advice will be well received man. I know you know your onions!
Not sure but ask the seller for pictures of the speakers. Avoid cabs made from MDF. The rear baffle being MDF is ok though. Some older Peavey 412M cabinets had Celestion G12K-85 speakets that sound great.

I never would mod my stock 1981, model 1992. The 15" sidewinder cab sounds tight. If you have the wrong pickups in your guitar I could see a problem. Pre amp pedals take care of needing to mod the amps.
The goal here is to push the preamp gain stages into distortion without clipping the phase inverter. It's not physically possible without reducing the signal level between the preamp and PI. No pedal can do that. The modification is done by lifting one leg of the last gain stage coupling cap and wiring in a pre-phase MV. No permanent alterations have been made and it can be undone by any competent tech in under 5 minutes. Thanks for watching and keep rocking that 1992!
