She can actually sing 2-3 notes at the same time (polyphonic singing)!! It’s actually crazy!!
I had no idea!!
@@jessicasopranonotes Tara Simon in her reaction knew it was made famous by the Tuvan Throat People
@@paulmorris8762 What she does is different from what they do, although 2 notes can be heard from both. Their sound is more like a bagpipe, where one note is constant, while the other note moves around! Layla moves both notes. Although she's not in full control of them both! Sometimes she can even get 3 notes to come out! A lot of people say what you said in your comment, but truthfully it's not the same thing! The only similarity is that you hear 2 notes!
The thing she did with her voice at the end was actually her! No engineering. She’s able to sing two notes at the same time.
Search eg for polyphonic overtone singing by Anna Maria Hefele
@@tilz5299 or throat singing from africa, asia and the artic circle
@@tilz5299 It is one way to do it but not at all what Lalah is doing in this video ; the timbres of the two techniques do not match. There's one guy with a tutorial on what she's doing (and reproduction of the sound) but I still don't know what's happening and I can't find what he's doing either, it's definitely super hard to reproduce.
@@lonewaer Sounds interesting, do you have a link? Yes, it sounds a bit different, I attributed that to vocal colour :-)
@@lonewaerit’s actually a super popular technique in the beatbox scene! Some masters of it include Two.H and Stitch definitely check out their GBB 2023 wildcards
Skilled, soulful, and fearless. Lalah's the truth.
SInce you liked Snarky Puppy, and this live format, you'll enjoy this: [ ua-cam.com/video/L_XJ_s5IsQc/v-deo.html ] live studio session of "Lingus". No vocals in it, but wow, it's special. Of note #1: Guest drummer (Larnell Lewis) subbing for their regular drummer - Larnell learned the song that day while on the flight over. Of note #2: Guest keyboard player (Cory Henry) who does the big solo... think of him as the Lalah Hathaway focal point of the performance, and just as mindblowing. A must-watch/listen.
Lingus is AMAZING!!!
Larnell was a guest and learned 6 of the 8 songs on the flight. He had played Lingus with the band previously, though. Corey was not a guest but a "regular" member at that time. As regular as anyone during that time.
Snarky Puppy is comprised of around 20 people at any given performance, though commonly touring with slightly smaller, around 13. They have a large roster that comes in and out to help with timing issues with the individual's other projects. They do occasionally bring in things like strings for album recordings, but for the most part, if you tour or record with Snarky, you're considered "family". Their last album brought in many of the members: they were using 3 kit drummers and 3 auxiliary percussionists at one time.
New sub here, "Soprano Notes"... and I'm not going anywhere, lol! I appreciate the way that you dissect, if you will, the universal elements of great music (. _ .), aside from your own classical background of music! The nose knows... and (in your case, the "ears hear" clearly), those elements of art and music which matter)! 👏🏾👏🏾 Thank you for your "reaction offerings" to us... in the expansion of our own musical tastes and acumen! 🎼 🎵 😁
Thanks you @rumseyh you are 100% on-the-mark as to how I’m feeling about this review. I’m adding this channel to my Amy Nulty, 12 tone, Adam Neely, and Charles Cornell notifications.
Snarky Puppy is my favorite jazz band of the whole world. I didn't know Lalah Hathaway and thanks to you, now I do. More songs to add to my jazz playlist. That being said, I'm officially addicted to your UA-cam chain from now on.
You should check out the Family Dinners albums! Snarky Puppy brings in friends and collaborators to sing and/or play covers with them. This song is from Family Dinner Vol. 1.
Cool analysis, examples on point.
She can sing the overtones in her voice, and it is a rejoicing of one of her songs, "Something" from her early career. Snarky Puppy rejoiced it and invited her to sing it.
The original song is:
It's Something - Brenda Russell (1983)
Also, Lalah had done the song (Somethin') in her 1990 album.
The Snarky Puppy version is a totally different arrangement of the song.
Wikipedia says:
"Snarky Puppy is sometimes referred to as a "collective." The band's current roster boasts about 19 members, and well over 40 musicians have performed with the group over the years and through the group's 14 albums."
The group was originally a 10 person band, but expanded over the years. Basically they'd play with someone, and if they vibed, they'd keep in touch.
I always enjoy just seeing musicians nerd out with each other 😁 how can she sing chords?!
Hi Jess! It’s been awhile since I commented. Just life. But I still watch all your reactions lol. Wanted to comment that there is a YT interview Lalah did with New York Vocal Coaching 2 wks ago called “Overtones & Polyphonic Singing” where she talks about her ability to do what she did in the Snarky Puppy video.
She says she doesn’t call it a skill (says it’s a quirk & that she’s an alien 😂) & doesn’t call it polyphonic or throat singing. It’s something she says she discovered she could do when she was 12 or 13, but couldn’t figure out how to use it or how to practice to make it better. Says there’s no one for her to go to to help her practice it. Only recently for the 1st time can she change the pitches & intervals.
Interestingly she says she went to an Ear/Nose/Throat dr who put a camera down her throat & she watched it while she did it. She says while vocal cords vibrate together when u sing tones, part of her chords stay together & the other part moves.
So that is how Miss Lalah herself explains what her instrument does. 😊
As always, thoroughly enjoyed this reaction! Looking forward to your next one. You take care.
Welcome to the Snarky Puppy rabbit hole… enjoy your stay. I, too, would LOVE to be a recording guest for one of SP’s recordings… even moreso to go back in time to when Corey Henry (keyboards) was still with the band.
As far as other songs, may I humbly introduce you to the Jacob Collier rabbit hole… start with “The Flintstones Theme”… JC has won a grammy for each of his first 5 albums.
Oh, Jess! HI!! Nice video... but Lalah Hathaway can do polyphonic singing, which would have allowed you to double the length of this video trying to explain it... lol. Okay, edited to correct: Fairy Voice Mother is the one who reacted to this and replicated it somewhat... but Elizabeth at TCV breaks down another video and explains exactly what's happening... Also, Snarky Puppy is great, I sometimes put their whole concerts here on youtube on for background music... Great reaction, though!
I also play Snarky Puppy's "Lingus" album from time to time but I can't have it in the background when I'm watching on UA-cam. I follow so many of the mannerisms and interactions between the players and the reactions of the audience that I always end up watching virtually everything, every time!
Thanks a ton! I definitely agree the video would have easily been twice as long had I caught on she did polyphonic singing lol
Fairy Voice Mother goes into more depth on this technique in her discussion with Stitch who uses it in his beatboxing.
That song came from her first album which I purchased as soon as it hit the shelves
As the daughter of Donny Hathaway, she clearly has the genes to be the exceptional singer she is! I love this song!
Thanks for posting--introduced ME to Snarky Puppy, too! 14:04--opera and classical musicians, take heart! As Barry Harris pointed out, "jazz is just the continuation of classical music". His teaching/workshop videos are mainly from a pianistic point of view, but I think anyone studying improv will be able to take something away. I love the expressions on his students' faces here: ua-cam.com/video/G1siDXQ92Nw/v-deo.html
The latest Snarky Puppy album (Empire Central) won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album 2023. They call themselves a "collective" not a"Band." There are 23 or so members of Snarky Puppy and 19 of them play on this particular album: 3 (yes 3) drum sets (yes at the same time), 3 guitarists, 4 keyboard players, 3 percussionists, 4 horn and woodwind players, a jazz violinist and the leader who plays electric bass and bass synth.
Learning improv liste to a singers singer. Lalah, and Sarah Vaughn you'll get it
Bobby McFarin comes to mind. One of the greatest live singers I've ever heard.
This is a cover and I love the original, but they did it justice. The original is “It’s Something” by Brenda Russell from 1983. I still play the original!! ❤️❤️❤️
layla has been singing it for years, I believe she actually recorded it also
Btw. This is a cover of Lalah’s original song ‘Its Something’ from her 1990 self titled album. She is a true gift.
That's a cover of Brenda Russell 1983.
Except for the background singers, they're all SP with the Bassist Mike League at the helm. And once you see them live you're a devoted fan for life.
Damn, I'd never noticed the very faint drum hits during the first few seconds! Amazing catch.
So, yeah, this song is a cover, but it's also heavily reworked. Snarky Puppy usually rehearses their songs, then play them a few times to a studio audience, improvising every solo, and then choosing one take to put on the album.
If I remember correctly, when they're about to record a new album, they sell tickets to the recording sessions, but those are very few in comparison to an actual concert, by nature of the relatively small rooms they record in, and usually sell pretty fast. Their last album was released in late 2022, so maybe they'll start working on recording a new one soon-ish.
Lianne La Havas! Bittersweet, a Colors Show! pleaseeeeee ❤
Snarky Puppy: There are no vocalists on the song I'm recommending (LINGUS - 35M views) and I'm not concerned with whether you react to it or not. Do it for yourself. It's a 10 minute piece so I'm providing a 2nd opinion - a reaction exclamation by MrLboyd who begins... "Wait, I think this may be too much for me to handle. This is one of the best things I've ever heard in my life. I'm mad that I even listened to it.....I'll never get this experience back...I'm going to listen to this probably 30 more times before I go to bed tonight." His testimonial is directly linked here: ua-cam.com/video/ry6TkxgT6nk/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared&t=823)
They keyboard soloist featured in the 2nd half is Corey Henry. The keyboardist sitting beside him who isn't featured but genuinely shows awe and support for Corey's performance is named Shawn Martin. Shawn, who been Kirk Franklin's musical director, has five Grammy wins independent of Snarky Puppy's five Grammy wins. This ensemble's talent pool is so deep, Grammy winners can take a back seat. Or, as did happen on this recording, a replacement drummer (Larnell Lewis) can learn all the music on a transatlantic flight when an emergency kept the scheduled drummer from participating.
polyphonic singing is common with Tuvon (?) throat people tribe
That was Family Dinner Vol 1 and yes you can purchase ticket to go to the recording session which is usually done over 3 nights, 2 sessions a night where the artists record their songs. There is also a Family Dinner Vol 2 with about 10 to 15 guest artist. The musicians playing are all part of Snarky Puppy with the exception of 1 or 2 musicians. Unfortunately not sure when or if Snarky Puppy will be doing any more Family Dinners, but their last album was also recorded before a live audience, also their earlier albums/CDs were before live audiences in a studio …
What a cool concept! I had never heard this before.
🔥🔥
You have to react to Faouzia Fur Elise live. Pppllleeeaaassseee!!! 🙏😉
Rainbow "Stargazer" ..REACTION..
you need to listen to Dirty Loops
That was voice singing two notes at the same time. Polyphonic singing (ua-cam.com/users/shortso9pwTQ1OBoU?si=WXfucxuxsgRCCr7f)
Jess, I'm hoping you will react to Haley Reinhart and PostModern Jukebox covering "Don't Speak" by No Doubt. Thank you very much.
Have you seen the video of her, Casey Abrams and a few other people performing "Hit the Road Jack" live on the sidewalk outside Room 5 (sadly long gone favorite small listening room in LA) after a "Monday Monday" performance (each artist performs three songs, hosted by my friend Joel Eckles, who was just with her on tour).
Hello! May you make a react vidéo of Billie Eilish performance at the oscar 2024 ( What was I made for) or 2022 ( no Time to Die ) please ?
No strings,no effects. Just her voice. Many beatboxers use similar techniques. Dont try to understand it, and most of all, don't presume this is done witch some kind of engineered effect from some technision in de back.
Have a look at the beatboxer in the link. Stitch is one of the users of a similar technique of singing.

I guess you have to sing a bit - jazz means you have to show who you are - it was enjoying, thank you.
Wow! If I could only pick ONE word to describe that, it would be... dissonant. I have heard OF Snarly Puppy, but I've only listened to one piece, but was not thrilled. This was MUCH better! REALLY nice instrumentals all around! Lalah does a fantastic vocal performance with a very difficult piece! Not everyone (even really GOOD singers) can pull of scat that well! As a former trumpet player, I love the Harmon mutes! Great all around!
You have to hear their What About Me? project. They are amazing!
Overtone singing and its a cover of one of her early songs.
It’s polyphonic splitting, different from overtone singing.
Ok, but that sounds horrid
This was fun!!!. If you want more, kinda Jazz Fusion, i would suggest "Dirtiy Loops - Next to you". I think you will enjoy it a lot.
Check Jacob Colliers Bridge Over Trouble Water … Snarky won a Grammy for Something w/Lala Hathaway
She has a couple amazing songs with Joe Sample that are SO GOOD!
This is really something ! I've heard that she was taught this ceremonial singing technique in an African tribe.
THAT'S HER VOICE
She sang chords! Wow
NO! Sweetie everyone of the musicians on stage are actual active/regular members of Snarky Puppy. All of them in this performance and others not in this show are members of Snarky Puppy.
The majority of the musicians on stage went to college together in North Texas and co-founded Snarky Puppy with the Michael League.
There are over 25 members of Snarky Puppy. They're more of a jazz orchestra than a band.
