Ok, Ashley...so once you go down the Snarky Puppy rabbit hole there's no coming back up. They're a musical collective originally from Texas and they also have their own groups and projects individually. Mike League (the bassist) founded it 20 years ago. Last week I was again at their annual music festival in Miami. After one of their sets, I asked him between all of them and their collective works, how many Grammy's are on the stage. He told me north of 70. For "The Puppies" this song was their first.
🧡 She is Donny Hathaway's daughter. Your face when Lalah did the split vocals was priceless! Snarky Puppy is a great musical ensemble. This collaboration won them a Grammy for Best R&B Performance in 2014. Tfs!
Her name is pronounced Lay-La, her father was one of the greatest vocalist of the 70’s died too young, I’m sure before your musical journey is done on your channel you will have heard Donny, he’s going to be requested,
@@TheOfficialAshleyReacts You may know the Christmas song "This Christmas" by Donny Hathaway. Hang all the mistletoe, I'm gonna get to know you better. This Christmas!
Her Father was soul singer Donny Hathaway, who was a great singer himself. If you want to hear where she got the voice from, react to "A Song For You" by Donny Hathaway. He also was the first to sing, helped write, produced, and arraigned "This Christmas".
Lalah Hathaway has a wealth of talent that I just love. It’s wonderful to see your reaction. This gives you pause in so many ways. It’s twisting and turning with such beautiful surprises. I enjoyed you, Ashley. Her range is incredible.
Lalah is the daughter soul legend Donnie Hathaway. She has an extensive catalog of her own but hearing her dad's song, "A Song For You," will give you insight of what she was raised up around
yeah Snarky Puppy is amazing, and Lalah is otherworldly. The famous one to react to is Lingus (from the We Like it Here session), but I also love Shofukan and Sleeper (man plays hosepipe) from the same session. Those are 2013. For one of the latest ones you will absolutely love for the change-ups, Trinity (extended version) should be on your list.
A decade later people are still checking out this awesome performance. I love it! 🔥🔥🔥 Lalah the GOAT! It's dope to hear rap artists discovering and sampling her music. I love to see Jasmine Sullivan giving Lalah her flowers. It's just awesome!
Snarky Puppy won a Grammy for this performance featuring the great Layla Hathaway. Layla's dad, the legendary Donny Hathaway, sang, in my opinion, the greatest love song ever written, called "A Song For You," You should definitely react to that song.
This selection shows her versatile ability, but I love her straight up singing ability, especially when introducing het to the first time listeners!!!😊
Kenya Hathaway is the first Donny Hathaway daughter I heard singing. Kenya is on Lee Ritenour's OVERTIME DVD (2005). She was singing "Is It You?" with Grady Harrell.
Ok, stumbled in here because I just subscribed to your channel. This is not the common stuff we're fed! Gottit! And at a late hour in my neck of the world, this was just great art!
So, Snarky Puppy is an instrumental band, currently with almost 20 members. They have two collaborative "Family Dinner" albums, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, in which they invite a bunch of musicians to play cover songs with them, and most of the songs in those albums feature singers, such as Lalah. "Something" comes from Family Dinner Vol. 1. Brenda Russell is the original performer of the song, and the original is also amazing, albeit completely different.
If you look in the comments of that video, all of the members of Snarky Puppy performing are listed. For SP, this was one of the first of many live performance to a small audience videos; the audience are on wireless “silent disco” headphones which are catching all the sound from the mixing board. Snarky Puppy themselves all met at Northern Texas University (formerly North Texas State) which has been a Mecca for jazz instrumentalists for decades. Welcome to the SP rabbit hole; enjoy your stay.
I LOVE Lalah Hathaway (Donny Hathaway's daughter) and this video is slamming. She's one of the only people in the world that can split her vocal chords and harmonizing with herself.
There's a band from Switzerland, discovered by QUINCY JONES that you need to react to: Dirty Loops. Look up the song called "Hit Me". I want to see that stank face that you made again!
Amazing comments, there is an abundance of knowledgeable people here. You may want to check out Robert Glasper and Terrace Martin as well. Snarky Puppy has some great video performances here on UA-cam from the album "We Like It here". Check out "Lingus" with amazing performances by drummer Larnell Lewis and Keyboardist Corey Henry that are truly amazing. Larnell Lewis also collaborates with the band Ghost Note on his song "Change Your Mind" on the Ziljian Live Series (Showcase for Drummers). There's a performance by young talented drummer JD Beck that is pretty cool. I've rambled on too much!! lol Enjoy the music..
Hi Ashley, your videos make me so happy. I was wondering if you would consider doing When the Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin. Is there a way that I could sponsor that?

Donny did not write "A Song For You", a Leon Russell tune, covered over 100 times by many artists, including the late, great Donny Hathaway.
“Lingus” by Snarky Puppy is a must hear!
