As Colombian, I think they did a great job. First, there are a lot of women in their ranks (if you see other guerrillas), and they suffer a lot, due to they are enlisted (not necessary by force, but cause there is no option, because poverty, isolation and there is any option to progress), at a young age, they have to suffer not only the same training as any male, but also they have to serve sexually their superiors, they have to do abortions or be killed if they refuse. So, they got their mind far twisted than a male insurgent, and you can see that in combat or terrorist attacks. If you talk with Colombian soldiers ( I had to due to my job), they will tell you that women are the most sadistic and dangerous insurgent in FARC ranges (also FARC, is the most dangerous guerrilla in America). Moreover, during the combat in season 3 we can see that she was a "Pisa suave", that is an elite unit of the FARC, that are trained for stealth mission, they are trained to survive in the jungle at a young age, naked (cause clothes and shoes are noisy), no food, no water, only explosives and a gun called "Mata policias" or police killer, that shoots projectiles that break through Kevlar (as we see in the anime). The rate of mortality is very high, but the survivors are the deadliest killers in FARC ranges. Finally, she lives in Venezuela, the only place where an ex-FARC (because, nobody wants to go to Cuba), could try a normal life. I think that they did a great job about the background of Roberta, especially the disappointed about revolutionist Ideals and how they start to traffic drugs to generate profits.
After this ova, she became my favorite character because I started to realize how sociopathic (yes and cowardly) Revy is. You can choose to leave your past behind or you can choose to dive deeper and deeper into a place like Roanapur
Garcia and Roberta are like the anti Rock and Revy in that was. Garcia uses the darkness of Roanpur to save someone he loves, who's trying to, albeit violently, deal with her issues. Rock begins to use the darkness in spite of the people he could love, and Revy mostly stews in her own issues, refusing to do anything but, like you said, dive deeper
Black Lagoon is one of those shows , where there is a lot of (dumb) enjoyment on the surface, but with a genuine depth hidden underneath. Cool that you took us for a dive man.
Roberta is fairly similar to Guts. Had a horrible childhood, learned to fight just to survive(except Roberta learned to fight for a greater cause instead of a lust for battle), have a great tragedy happen to her and then instead of being there for the people she loves, she's too emotionally weak and goes on a rampage for revenge only to realize that what she should've done instead was to help the people she loves instead.
Honestly the most chilling parts of Roberta's mental breakdown is the soft, delusional kind voice she uses after extreme mindless violence to show how disconnected she is mentally from reality during her rampage.
Me too, that scene where she thought garcia wasn't real and he sat there in a nearly vegitated state destroyed me. The thought of having him see a person who he found peace and joy with witnessing that roberta herself has been taught to act horrifically/violently to feel validated and just, somewhat destroying his perception of the world destroyed me.
This really makes me want to go back and watch the show again. I never realized how dark Black Lagoon's story really was. I've heard people talking about not letting the past control your future but this really made me think about that concept in a new light. Thank you for making this!
No problem, thank you for watching and for the kind words as always : ) Provoking thought is almost indescribably important to me, to experience and to pass on, so I love to see that sometimes I can make it happen
Great analysis. That moment in the ending, when the wind flutters her left sleeve make me almost shed a tear every time - but still I'm happy about Garcia and Roberta. Her bloody path is finally over, and this is the beginning for a well-deserved rest and rethinking of her life. The past is in the past. Thank you for making Black Lagoon content in 2021 !
Thanks! It took me a while to take the ending as more than simple trick, but it really is something beautiful after all the bloodshed. That he was willing to reach in and save her, and even she was able to take that and move on
She became my favourite, right at the barfight. I still get teary eyed everytime I see that last shot with the wooden leg and the armsleeve fluttering in the wind. I once read a fanfic that said she refused a better prostetic in order to do penance, and I could totally believe that. Btw, my other favourites, in order are : Frederica Sawyer, Gretel, Balalaika and Shenhua.
I feel it's likely should would have chosen an inferior option. A reminder that the work of her body is done, now its time for the work of her mind and emotions
Amazing analysis. I always thought Roberta's blood trail was going to be a prequel of how Rosarita became Roberta. What the OVA actually was was very impressive. Your breakdown of Roberta's character was magnifique. Can't wait to see more character analysis
I always figured it would be a separate story about Roberta as well, so I never watched it on my first pass of BL haha. Thank you for the kind words : )
To add my two cents, I also think the appearance of both Garcia and Roberta are also mirrors of Rock and Revy. Garcia looks as if he were a younger Rock, but with lighter hair in contrast to Rock's darker hair that signifies the dark path he's about to set himself on. Roberta looks like an older and composed Revy, showing that while both are quite violent, one is better at hiding what they truly feel. And to add to appearance, Roberta's appearance also shows her growth: mainly the glasses. The lens can be seen as what she tries to make herself believe to be fact - that being the Lovelaces' happiness and purity were the only thing she strived for and could accomplish. Notice how when we see her with the glasses when she kills the US hitmen, it's under the illusion that she thinks Garcia wanted to revenge. Then when she doesn't have them on and Garcia sees her kill Alberto, that could show the "purity" she saw in Garcia is now gone, even when she had the maid outfit on again in the jungle. Lastly in the final scene, she no longer wears those glasses because the illusion she made for herself is now gone and she doesn't need them anymore. My apologies if I'm ranting and it makes no bloody sense, it's late at night for me lol
@@ProfessorViral Would you consider covering Rei Hiroe's Re:Creators? He may not of been the Director for the series but he was behind the original story with Ei Aoki being the Director. This series seems to fall beneath the radar when it has one of the most compelling plots to a Anime. The series follows a high school student who becomes involved in a battle between several characters from manga, anime, and video games who somehow appear in the real world. The interactions between the said creators of said characters & their characters who have now manifested into their world is enticing & at times deep rooted. Another consideration I'd have for you is Witch Hunter Robin. It's hypocrisy & flawed ideology really reminds me of Psycho Pass. When you are punishing people not for the crime in and of it's self but for the potential to commit a crime. It's a seemingly unending loop. I've seen you've tackled Psycho Pass so thought you might enjoy this series if you weren't familiar with it or if you were might enjoy tackling & covering a rather old series.
Garcia and Rock being similar but went in different directions. Never thought of it like that before. I was kind of picking that up on your analysis, but just clicked when you said that. Curious to see which character, from Black Lagoon or any show, you plan to analyze next.
Honestly, the Garcia Rock parallel has been in my head for a while, but I never quite had the right moment to cover it fully. I thought about it here, but Roberta ended up giving so much detail I couldn't cover more Rock as well and have it be under an hour between the two videos! 🤣
Yeah, Rock is failed to choose the world he wishes to live in and to be taken seriously by the dead, and is disillusioned, but Garcia is still pure so Rock, in not wanting history to repeat, chose to push Garcia out of the Twilight, and thus saving him the agony of failure and disappointment, while damning himself to be nothing but a blank round, Once fired can never do any real damage.
@@alzingafagan7501 Garcia is a Teenage Kid that grew up around Violence and Chaos and had taken a Fondness and Liking to the Head maid Roberta, he was oblivious to her Past, but even once he found out about and saw with his own eyes the Environment she came from, He got the Courage to become a MAN and THE MAN for her, he and Rock figure out how to Break her and he successfully does that and SWEEPS her off her feet. I didn't think a 15 year old kid could Woo a Milf Maid like Roberta exactly 20 years his Senior, but he Did it. Completely Swept her off her feet. My guess is that when he saw Roberta dry humping that FARC Lt, he probably thought that he's was about to be Netorared, but to his complete surprise, it was a Ruse. She Violently Murders the Lt and DECRYS her LOVE and Loyalty to Garcia while doing it. I believe Garcia realized there, that he could become a Man and could marry her in 3 years that she wasn't going to be banging some Evil Mercenary and Cartel.
I can't help but love the shot comparison between Garcia and Rock. Whenever we see them together it is usually Rock whose face is obscured in shadows, while Garcia's (even when he shot someone) is bathed in light.
Thanks for all the effort to analyze one of the most enjoyable anime's I've viewed. I always enjoyed the characters search for individual meeting and purpose in an essentially Nihilistic world
Thanks for giving me a deep dive into my favourite show of all time every time you make a video about it. Always pointing out new things to me, I never thought of and even putting it in perspective of historical events (Part 1). It's always a pleasure.
Thank you for giving such a great insight on this anime. I've had this anime on my watch list for the past 2 years and just started last week. It's been a ride watching it so far!
I'm incredibly blown away with the content you provide on your channel! Just stumbled across this after rewatching Black Lagoon, I'd like to give a recommendation of an anime/manga and a character within it, I'd love it if you could do some analysis on the anime/manga of Monster and in particular, Johan Liebert!
Thank you! I'm glad it's been enjoyable for you. I for sure have to watch Monster some day, I just need to get ahead a little bit to account for the longer episode count, but I've only heard good things about it!

I think it is very fitting for her, but I wonder if we are like that deep down and it's only brought to the surface, or if we exist without darkness, and it's imprinted on us over years. Of course, then you have to wonder where it started as well
I just watched Robertas blood trail and man it was a blast especially with Rock and how he acted along with Balalika Revy and Roberta it really feels kinda tragic with all of it really!

Thank you! I have thought about some of the other characters, although I don't have anything definite as of yet. There'll be more in the future for sure though!

The Anime is definitely more poignant for the loss and damage sustained by Roberta.... But I'm a sucker for the Gal and want her to be more intact, so I prefer the Manga outcome as I am exceedingly biased Lol ^_^
Awesome video, a great exploration of her character and the themes of the show. One thing though, do you have a take on García Kissing Roberta at the end? Since It was on the lips and they both blushed I've seen many different opinions on the fan base. Thanks in advance.
Thank you! : D I don't have plans for Eda at the moment, but I think she's one of the characters I could work on if we get more additions to the anime. It feels like there's a bit more to her I need to see still
@@ProfessorViral yo man I know this is a roberta video but have you ever thought about why revy decides to put herself in the role of rock's gun? Or his protector post season one. I had a thought a few days back that maybe she's doing it to prevent rock from having to pick up a gun on his own, kinda stop him from having to kill anyone, in which case maybe that's a sign that she has never really given up on him possibly not stepping into the darkness since she tries so hard and has gotten hurt over protecting him, also ever thought of analyzing the manga? The arc after roberta's blood trail is actually very interesting and there's a character that can be an actual rival to revy romantically speaking
If you have the chance, can you maybe talk about lotten the wizard? (From the same anime) I know he's an unpopular character, but it would be pretty interesting.
Its a lot like real life. Most people wear personas, making you look one dimensional to everyone else, but under the surface everyone has depth and complexity. I think thats the charm of the characters.
I legit became sad and bothered when i knew what happened to roberta on her blood trail, i mean i know how that felt, lost and all, and when she got fucked up i legit shed a tear for her, wishing that she survive. But yea finished it, i was somewhat happy.
Just finished watching roberta blood trial and was confuses..this helped a lot man..still his left arm was working well but i understand that this might be like your idea went on how he now need to depend on instead of being depended on...but still..what was the plan of chang and eda,was it not to eliminate the americans so they wont screw wich their business,so why did everything seemed to turn at the end like chang wanted???
They wanted the Americans to escape after going through hell so that Roanapur would stay a secret from the wider world. A dead American squad draws attention from the people who won't ignore or profit from it's drug trade, and America would be forced to act where they ignored it before
One of my motivations for analyzing others stories is actually so one day I can try to write my own. I have rough ideas now, but nothing much as of yet
In the end I'm glad Roberta found some form of redemption something I would've like to see with rock and revy. You can't change the world or what other people around you choose to do but you can change yourself with what you choose to do with your life. Either keep running around in same degrading circles you've always known or try to find a new lease on life and make something good of it.
I agree, im relieved that Roberta sorted out her past and was able to move on, and since the series isn’t finished although it may not return but if it does I would love to see Rock and Revy find and way out and may it be cringy but go somewhere together and live happily with Revy leaving her past and all she’s known to do what’s she always wanted witch is to live normally, and Rock realizing that the path he is following leads to nowhere but disappointment and sadness Ultimately not being able to do anything which is shown throughout the show. However I don’t know how they would put this into play but I see it for me the best truly heart warming ending that show could have for the two
@Gregory Jones Its weird because after Roberta's blood trail the manga's momentum hits the breaks and the next couple arcs way more light hearted it's kinda jarring.
I haven't taken a full look at Garcia specifically to say. It's one of those things that feels out of place, it could be something about how he views love, or simply down to him being shot and knowing there's no guarantee that he'll live
Into older chicks? Honestly I don't know why, but I guess it's a form of acceptance of who she is and who she was. I believe the best comparison would be when Rock told Revy to give the kids a show and she shot the cans they set up with her Cutlass, rather than one of their toy guns.
Why is it that Hispanics in anime are used as lessons to be learned that they never seem to have dreams of their own and how far they go to achieve someone else’s like a dog just an observation
I think every character in Black Lagoon presents us with a lesson to be learned. Some do get to be more outside of that though. I'm just a white person on the internet, so its best for me to differ to the people these things effect, because they know first hand. So, I'll trust that there is an issue there, and keep it in mind for future characters
@@ProfessorViral ik I’m late to this but if u haven’t read the manga yet man she’s unstoppable and terrifying from what I’ve heard. Terrifyingly enough to be nerfed and rebooted to have limbs missing in the anime. Apparently unlike the anime she was unscathed throughout her entire run and was a life threatening challenge to Revy in the manga.
I dont get why this scene is sooo ped0philic. ..😮😂 why would young master kiss the maid...im so confused... The codependecy of the romanian twins is much understandable than this
I think it was to snap her out of her crazed state, or assure her in some way that he still cares for her. The most important part is that Roberta didn't return the kiss or anything, she just looked surprised.
@@raidencele4492 the snap back to reality was the little kid performing a sin by shooting the gun while she doesn't know it's a blank. That's all that was needed. But looking at Japan and usual animes that dabble in pedophilia....I'd say the intention wasn't pure. What are the chances it is? cmon now. It wasn't needed. Besides that Black Lagoon is great other than that one clip.

Awesome video, a great exploration of her character and the themes of the show.
One thing though, do you have a take on García Kissing Roberta at the end?
Since It was on the lips and they both blushed I've seen many different opinions on the fan base.
Thanks in advance.
awesome Roberta videos they made me love her character even more. do you plan on doing a video on eda too??
Thank you! : D I don't have plans for Eda at the moment, but I think she's one of the characters I could work on if we get more additions to the anime. It feels like there's a bit more to her I need to see still
This is awesome! Please do one on Edda of the Ripoff Church /CIA
Thanks! I have plans for a couple characters next, but I may do a video for her someday!
Great video! I love your Black Lagoon videos, they're the best I've seen on the subject.
Thank you, I'm glad you've been enjoying them!
On point once again 👌..well researched and presented second part..masterpiece..
Thank you! 😄
Persona can wait, this is way more important.
Ayyyy 😎
The best anime written character ever.
17:48 OMG i didnt had see that way YOU ARE SO RIGTH , she is the only one
HOLYYY MOLYYYY
I wish black lagoon make season 4 or Movie
Hopefully one day we'll get there. Things are slow, but eventually it seems to reason they'd adapt the manga again
People love the *crazed* purple haired chicks.
Based on the number of requests for these videos, I can confirm this statement haha
If you have the chance, can you maybe talk about lotten the wizard? (From the same anime) I know he's an unpopular character, but it would be pretty interesting.
I'd probably save him for a side character video, but I will likely do that at some point!
@@ProfessorViral cool!
Every Character seems so 1 dimensional on the surface but each have deeper motivations underneath.
Yeah, I was surprised that there was so much put into even side characters
Its a lot like real life. Most people wear personas, making you look one dimensional to everyone else, but under the surface everyone has depth and complexity.
I think thats the charm of the characters.
Just a question, but who is Roberta meeting at the end of the ova?
She's meeting the family of the Japanese businessman that she killed, the one she has hallucinations of
Bloodhound? More like the Terminator
Okay there Rock 🤣
Idk Garcia and Roberta will work
Adult and a 13 year old
I legit became sad and bothered when i knew what happened to roberta on her blood trail, i mean i know how that felt, lost and all, and when she got fucked up i legit shed a tear for her, wishing that she survive. But yea finished it, i was somewhat happy.
Bs on lost leg and arm. Eye wound but not destroyed.
She's seen at the end of Blood Trail missing both and with an eye patch. Maybe the eye is fine, but she lost both limbs
A dead American squad draws attention from the people who won't ignore or profit from it's drug trade, and America would be forced to act where they ignored it before
Servent of death.
When are you gonna do a deep dive of "Gangsta"?
I actually forgot about that one, but I remember it being mentioned in the comments a lot. I'll keep it in mind!
@ProfessorViral with all the analysis you do, do you see yourself writing anything of your own?
One of my motivations for analyzing others stories is actually so one day I can try to write my own. I have rough ideas now, but nothing much as of yet
@@ProfessorViral I'm looking forward to reading anything you publish.
Why did he kiss her though?
I haven't taken a full look at Garcia specifically to say. It's one of those things that feels out of place, it could be something about how he views love, or simply down to him being shot and knowing there's no guarantee that he'll live
I'm not sure if this is all of it but I assume to calm her down, and that she is still accepted/loved by him.
Into older chicks? Honestly I don't know why, but I guess it's a form of acceptance of who she is and who she was. I believe the best comparison would be when Rock told Revy to give the kids a show and she shot the cans they set up with her Cutlass, rather than one of their toy guns.
Not excusing him but teenagers do some dumb stuff sometimes. Especially with their crush🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
It's shame that Roberta didn't join the lagoon company. Garcia and fab can go to America to live happy life. Go school year's later married.
Do you reading the manga of black lagoon 🤔
I haven't yet, I'm speaking only on the anime here
@@ProfessorViral can you talk about in Manga please 🥺
Besides that Black Lagoon is great other than that one clip.
mmmm rubertuhhhhhhhhh
But why tf did Garcia kiss her?
I think the simplest reasoning is he was fighting for what he loved; a contrast to Rock whose started to fight against what he hates
First
this is a factual statement
Best straight shota movie ever
Why did he kiss her? Nobody knows lol
It does feel like the most off note of the whole thing. Maybe to showcase maturity? But I can't say either
