I'm a retired old school steel picker but I REALLY appreciate someone taking things to a competitive level and thinks outside the box with an open mind. If the steel guitar profession is to survive we need many more players like this, It's great to see someone introducing the steel to a more rock n roll funky modern metal sound, Thanks Robert, from older Nashville picker, I tip my hat to you.
@@americafuckyea2789 I saw him with the Family Band back in 2005 and he was insanely good, he's been playing since he was a child he was in his church's band.
Just starting to play and the possibilities are really limitless. In another video he talks about how sacred steel really emphasizes the blues but there’s also jazz, ambient, rockabilly, traditional country, Nashville country, Bakersfield sound, the Dutch steeel movement…the way it’s set up makes chordal patterns really easy without having to manipulate the frets with your fingers or even move the bar. Add in pedals and knee bars and you can get all kinds of tonal changes, including what I understand is the unique ability to change two elements of a major chord, in different directions (ie one stays the same, one goes up in pitch, the other down). Incredible instrument.
This guy is from the outer space. Incarnation and amalgam of Hendrix, Sun Ra, Don Cherry, Charlie Parker and Little Walter. Mr. Randolph you are a king, man!
What would happen if it was longer only 1 or 2 strings and covered the same range had all the effects built in (no reaching to the floor), volume pedal built in to the steel-bar, and infinite sustain (like an E-bow), was portable including battery and speaker? I know, I've got the only one. And it plays with one handed. Not being a guitar player my right hand is far better than my left. Instead of picking I hammer on, or the built in "e-bow" does all the work. It's like singing with my hand. No fret marks or guides, just listen and play. When I saw the late Colonel Bruce Hampton play at our local brew pub LBC, I was inspired by his playing. One day I searched how does an E-bow work? They won't tell you but so many pages later I knew and hacked it together. I like to call it portable Pink Floyd! There is a video or two of it on my channel [echodelta9] more to come. I haven't seen only heard Robert Randolph on the radio. David Lindley got to try it out when he came to town. Years of hearing the blues and Floyd shape my style as well as the ambient and electronic scene.
That would be because Pedal Steel Guitars come standard with 10 strings. Robert has had pedal steels in the past with up to 14 strings and some people said the above.
There called Universal steel guitars. They are both the E9th neck [top] and the C6 neck [bottom] piled into one neck. This steel is a double neck guitar meshed into one neck. They have been around since the 80's but traditional pickers feared the unknown territory of them. Jeffrey Newman swore by them, Paul Franklin is not afraid of them but so few use them. Julian Tharp played Jazz on one for a while.
Pedal steel guitars are wonderful instruments that no one wants to touch. I guess unless you can stumble around a stage, flailing your hands around a low-slug flying V so it looks like you're wanking, rockers aren't interested.
anyone here familiar with pete drake? i know any artist of the '60s is liable to be shrugged off as 'stupid' or 'boring' by large numbers of self professed musicians who are focused on remaining relevant today, but what that dude did over 50 years ago is far more inventive than this guy (of course it was applied to soft folksy music of the day)... i mean he invented the "talk box" (concept developed by alvino rey &luise king... drakes design was later used by peter frampton, jeff beck, etc) to get more control out of his instrument... sorry, but if robert randolph was playing at a local steet festival id keep walking...
Yup, I know him well "Sneaky Pete" was his pet name. However I do admire Robert for expanding the instruments typecast. Narrow minds are the steel guitars biggest threat right now, The roberts of this world are the only hope factories will keep producing them. If they get popular in the rock and roll world the prices will come down from competition in the building markets. Just think of a sudden demand for a million more steels in one year, yeppers that is what rock fans can do to a new fad. Have you priced a new steel lately? There all hand built because the demand is not enough for a large essembly line. I'm looking forward to a big price drop on these guitars thanx to the roberts ion this world.
Totally agree Cowboy. Robert is getting it to the masses. I wish some Chinese factories would knock out some low budget pedal steels. They would be shite but at the same time look at how it works in the guitar world . People buy crappy Chinese guitars to get them into the instrument and then end up with Strats and Les Pauls when they go tone hunting.
"Robert Randolph has consistently pushed the boundaries of what the pedal steel is capable of." you mean made it sound like a cheap guitar with raised action played with a slide? neat.

cowboy6591 I do have tears!
It also had a nice classic metal vibe. Reminded of black sabbath-warning in some spots.
Was not expecting him to shred like that....
The10000lbGorilla .....Me too!
Very proficient player. Clean but dirty. Love this shit. Wonder how long hes been playin.
@@americafuckyea2789 I saw him with the Family Band back in 2005 and he was insanely good, he's been playing since he was a child he was in his church's band.

Pitch shifted delay seems to only sound musical on pedal steel.
INSCRITO NO CANAL,,,SO SUCESSO.
Wow.
And this is why I can't hear any more. I'm always cranking it up. Great sound.
Sounds like Prince with the wah.
Fuck that sounds cool

How come lap steel guitarists get to play a 10 string guitar and not get crap like, "too many strings", "it's a bass", etc. #Djent #ERG

Atif Mansoor He actually used all 10 strings.
I think this is just a joke guys...
Awesome. I just threw my guitar out in the street
For fucks sake... Ripping.
Well fuck

Sacred steel sucks
portuguese
bosta=shit
grande=big
What’s the point? Just playing blowing licks at home. An overdose of nothingness.
He's a great player but the first tone sucks to my ears
oh i dig it

i guess OP just wants pedal steel to die out, huh?
@@cowboy6591 sneaky pete was a different guy from a later era. his name was Pete Kleinow who played on country rock stuff from the late 60s and 70s
"Robert Randolph has consistently pushed the boundaries of what the pedal steel is capable of."
you mean made it sound like a cheap guitar with raised action played with a slide?
neat.
lol. And who are you?
Humes McKenzie Haha, I don't think you have a clue as to what your talking about...
Wow.
