-What tuning do you use on this pedal steel?
    - I’ll have two number 9s, a number 9 large, a number 6 with extra dip, a number 7, two number 45s, one with cheese, and a large soda.

I'll tell you what Robert Randolph's "secret" is, and it has nothing to do with his rig, his gizmos or his setup. The secret is HIM! He is a natural musician with incredible technique and a great ear for pitch. His demonstration of the ebow on his Fessenden is spectacular and, like all really great musicians, he makes it look EASY. What impressed me as much as his musicianship is the joy that seems to shine through in everything he does. Great vid - a real inspiration. Thanks for posting.

“Natural?” He worked hard to get where he is. He started young and was surrounded with musicians who brought him up in the sacred steel tradition and he’s talked in interviews about playing/ practicing 8 hours a day. That’s hard work.

Great video! Love how he says, "That's a secret, don't show that" but then lets the camera film it. Don't worry Robert, even if they see it & set their pedal exactly the same, they're not going to sound like you. I think someone could sit down and play your rig and they wouldn't sound like you. He invited my GF and I to hang with at a club but we didn't want to impose on him so we declined but he talked with us for a few and took some pictures with us. Kind of wished I'd taken him up on his offer so I could of picked his brain musically but we figured he'd be bothered all night by people so we didn't want to be those people but he's definitely a super cool nice guy!

If you have a pedal steel guitar and you want to experiment with the ebow you're better off if you try it with a lap steel bar (like the one R.R. uses in this video) instead of the much heavier, bigger, bullet shaped standard pedal steel bar. The light weight and the side grooves on the lap steel bar will give you much more control for those fast gospel style riffs. Oh yeah...and check out Home Depot for those brackets & duct tape. I'm gonna pass on the farts. My playing stinks enough as it is!
