Alright here's the requested RTX 4090 laptop GPU vs RTX 4080 desktop GPU comparison! ua-cam.com/video/z2531DDo55w/v-deo.html To everyone asking for all sorts of different random laptop vs desktop GPU comparisons - I can't do them all as dedicated videos, but there will be one big video comparing almost all RTX 30/40 laptop and desktop GPUs in some months time, just takes a LONG time to collect all the data (25 games, multiple resolutions, more than 30 GPUs)
you can do the most requested one though. Looking at a huge number of graphs at the same time would make it way harder to analyze how much faster a certain GPU is compared to another. You can also just compile results of the desktop 4080 and laptop 4090m and show them to us with a voiceover. You don't need to re-test them again since all benchmarks are already done.
@@JarrodsTech yes, read the comments to this video and to 4090 vs 4090 comparison, lots of people are requesting it. Even more than I expected. Since 4090m and desktop 4080 are based on the same die, that's what a lot of people(if not most) want to see. As for price difference - a laptop will almost always cost more, that's just the truth of life.
I only mean to compare Laptop 4090 with Desktop 4080, because theyre the exact same chip. But i guess for taht could also just look at the power graph of the 4080 desktop lol
To all the people who want the laptop 4090 to be compared with the desktop 4080, i totally agree with you based on information's sake. But those saying that this video comparision is not fair are absolutely wrong as this is what nvidia themselves did to confuse those unaware buyers. If this is what they wanna do, then this shall be what they get.
It's not exactly to confuse the customers, yes it looks that way. You will still get the advatages of a 40 series card in a mobile variant like DLSS 3, except the reason they have degraded the performance is for thermal reasons, laptop's thermals haven't really kept up with the amount of power the newer NVIDIA cards is asking nowadays (a 4090 asks for 450 watts, no way in hell you're going to fit that monstrosity in a 16 inch or even 18 inch laptops). Laptop designers need to design a new thermal solution to make it possible, or NVIDIA needs to design their cards to be more energy efficient without degrading performance.
Exactly, that would be a more logical and interesting comparison. We already knew the naming is irrelevant and I don't need to watch the video to know that the desktop obliterates the laptop 4080. What would actually be interesting is comparing the most powerful laptop to its nearest desktop equivalent based on the specs (not the naming)
true, RTX 4080 Mobile is using AD104 that is also used by RTX4070TI and RTX4070 desktop variant. RTX 4090 mobile is using AD103 that is used in RTX4080 desktop variant.
Dude modern day laptops are nuts... Of course the desktop is (almost) always going to come out on top, but you're looking at a totally acceptable competitor at 1/8th the size factor (including monitors, keyboards, etc for the desktop.) and half the wattage. Desktops are always going to be the "way to go" in terms of raw power (and usually price), but damn have these laptops come far.
Yeah I don't think direct comparisons are that useful coz laptops and desktops are basically two separate markets. High end Desktops are for people that want the absolute best possible set-up, upgradeability, and space is not an concern. Gaming laptops are for people that travel or have multiple places they stay in, but don't want the hassle of moving a desktop everywhere.. they'll sacrifice some performance and upgradeability for convenience.
@@gman7497 Bingo. If you have a big screen TV or gaming monitor to game on... well... what is the point of a laptop. The 40" to 75" monitor isn't portable, so you might as well put a PC under it. Likewise, if you want a portable device, why lug a big gaming laptop around when a tablet, Surface, or light laptop is fine. It takes an odd use case where you have multiple big monitors/workstations to plug something into and yet need to bring a device between them. Business travel for someone needed a powerful PC is more common, but that kind of graphics is typically overkill.
And then when you're at home you can hook it to an external monitor and plugged that monitor directly into an EGP u enclosure with minimal performance hit using your laptops CPU Indecently have a docking station with full powered desktop card when you're at home... By I used QHD monitor and like new do 4080GPU spend 7052 a $100 on the EGPU and I don't know maybe a 150 on a power supply... Now you're literally within 5% of the desktop card and then can unplug and be at 25% of the performance while on the go...
@@BW022 your point completely misses gaming laptop target market. I'll be always pro desktop just because, as some mentioned, you always can get the best power at the best price compared to laptops. However, I'm right now in a point of my life where I move every month between two houses and I won't probably live in the same city for more than two years or so, also my next job will ask me a lot of travelling probably. Therefore, I want a powerful gaming pc, but I can't get a desktop that could last me 6-7 years like the one I had until now if I need to move and travel so much. In the future if I settle down somewhere? okay, I'll make the best desktop I've ever had, but right now a good laptop that's powerful enough to be able to play everything at max at least at 1080p for the next 4 years or so will do fine. So I think this is the market of gaming laptops and you ware missing all the big picture
@@McBreak332 Sorry, I'm honestly not understanding you. * You move between two houses. That's rare, but ok. Do you have a big TV/monitor at each house? Do you own two houses? Seems like an extra PC would be cheap in comparison. If you don't own them, how do you travel between them? You can put a PC in a car, even pay extra for a smaller PC. If you fly... PC is cheap vs. plane tickets. Travel I can understand, but moving between to fixed places doesn't seem to make sense. Even at work, I don't play that game -- I keep a PC at both places rather than carry a laptop around. * Desktop not lasting. And how does a gaming laptop solve that? They will be obsolete long before a desktop, less upgradable, far more expensive to replace, and far more likely to break (drop, screen, keyboard, battery, etc.)
Totally agree.. Also please compare these two: "X13 Flow with XG Mobile 3080" vs "4080 Laptop" aka Mobile ...many of us are considering cheap-ish 3080 while in stock (or used)
And because the laptop 4090 is the true successor to the laptop 3080. NIVIDA moved the naming scheme over one notch in the laptops to get people to pay more for less. That's why you can get a 4090 in a laptop this generation but you could only get up to a 3080 before.
It would be interesting to see comparison between 4080 desktop and 4090 laptop as they have very similar chip. Also NEO seems to be quite poorly cooled by air as most other 4090 and 4080 laptops don't hit temp limit on GPU, though they are much louder
The desktop version is basically as big as the laptop itself. I'm not surprised by the difference in performance, or rather I am but in favor of the laptop version being so tiny yet so performing with reasonable temperatures
well. The cooler size has benefits of lower temperature and hence lower noise. So for desktop I actually prefer largher cooler for desktop use in exchange for lower noise, which is very important for the actual expericence, especially with a good pair of speakers.
@@tomtang8708 A desktop pc is better for many reasons and I personally prefer it. I'm currently using a laptop because of my job and I have to move often otherwise a desktop would just be better. Quiter, cooler, more performant for the price, if you want to upgrade something you just have to buy the single piece, and last but not least, you can build it however you want and specifically to your needs
Laptop version would perform much better if NVIDIA wasn't so cunning and had put the same die and vram as the desktop version. If they did, the only difference between laptop and desktop would've been in TGP.
Hey Jarrod, - thanks for all the reviews. Most helpful. I just picked up a new Legion 7 Gen 8 with the 4080/13900HX, 32GB DDR5-5600 etc, and can validate that the 1% lows are just awful on this machine. The occasional stutters are absolutely crazy-making, especially since the average is so good. I can't figure out exactly what's going on. I. even under-volted the CPU to ensure no thermal throttling, so it's not that. Compared to my 13700K+4090+DDR4 desktop it's a much inferior experience just because of those 1% lows. Do we have any idea what's going on here?
Great comparison. I think including the avg energy cost comparison would show that the laptop really is a eco friendly solution in the long term. That desktop build is going to draw around 700w at best, whereas the laptop is around 330w max.
I think the more relevant comparison is the laptop RTX 4090 which is basically the desktop RTX 4080. I'd like to see what a top-TDP system like the MSI Titan can do, and then a more thin and light mainstream offering like the Razer Blade or Zephyrus M16 can do so we have some ranges to explore.
I think these videos that call out the lameness of the same product name across laptop and desktop are important. I’d like to see same chip comparisons. So a laptop 4090 and desktop 4080 for example.
I still think it's easier to upgrade a laptop because it's easier to sell as long as you take care of it as compared to upgrading parts per piece off of a desktop. But hey everyone has their own preferences .
I fully agree with you. I keep hearing about how PC is upgradeable, but it's not been my experience. CPU on my desktop died 2 months ago - it was Core i5 6600k. But I can't install a new CPU on that motherboard, so I have to replace it as well. Turns out it's hard to find a mini ITX motherboard that fits in my case with Noctua NH-D15, so I might have to get a new CPU cooler too. I'd be happy to swap GTX 1070 for a newer GPU on the occasion, but find me one that provides at least +50% FPS while still being 2 slots and not taking more power, because so far I was running 450 W SFX power supply perfectly fine. Looks like I need a new case and a new power supply then. I guess I could keep my DDR4 RAM, but perhaps if I'm already replacing the entire PC then I should go DDR5? So the only component of my PC that can be re-used in a new PC is the NVME SSD drive.
Hey Jarrod, how good are those TRACER VII EDGE I17E LC 17 laptops from cyberpowerPC? They seem to be cheaper with the new 4080m, 4090m gpus and they are also water cooled. I couldn't find any review of them.
to me personally nvidia is just borderline scamming people by naming their mobile gpus like their desktop gpus. theyre factually not the same products. bring back the "rtx 4080m" or at least max q naming scheme or people will trust you less year by year. if the laptop 4090 ist weaker than a desktop 4070 something is REALLY wrong.
Suddenly I miss the days when NVIDIA used MaxQ to designate the laptop version of the cards. At least it was clear to average customers that the desktop and laptop graphics cards were two distinct lines of products.
The difference in power usage means ill be sticking to laptops, i’ll just make sure i watch your video reviews before i buy another, although i really don’t need one right now, so it’ll be a while. Maybe when the 50XX GPU’s are out or my current one breaks.
Hey Jarrod, any update on when your deals website will cover other regions? I don't know what's going on with the market but it seems like whenever a tech UA-camr shows awesome Newegg/Bestbuy laptop deals for like 2,5k$ they are like 4,5k€ in Europe...I thought the whole world is getting hit hard by inflation but I guess Europe is even worse off...or something weird is going on with dealer pricing over here. Kinda ridiculous, anyway would love to see your website cover more areas soon TM.
I got the Asus Strix G18 4080 about 3 weeks ago for $2499 ($2749 after taxes 😡) and it's a beast. Cyberpunk 2077 1080p and 1440p Ultra RT just kills it with no stutters and it barely gets warm. Thermal Grizzly liquid metal on the cpu and gpu makes a world of difference. I haven't run any benchmarks on this one myself since there are a ton of those videos, but worth a look.
Hey I'm also planning to buy the ASUS ROG STRIX G18 RTX 4080 Varient But I have seen that alot of people having the issue of Screen backlight bleed And coil wine So Can you tell me that is there Type of Problem with yours Like screenbleed or coil wine
@@PUBG830 I don't have coil whine with mine I don't think, I have tinnitus so I may just not be hearing it, but my fans so far hardly ever come on past the slowest speeds (except in Stranded Deep for some reason). As far as the backlight bleed, I haven't noticed it, however the backlight is super bright. If your browsing a page that has allot of white on it, it's way too bright. Sorry can't help much, I'm old, blind, and hard of hearing lol.
Jarrod we already know the naming is irrelevant and I don't need to watch the video to know that the desktop obliterates the laptop 4080. What would be far more interesting is comparing the most powerful laptop to its nearest desktop equivalent based on their specs (not the branding). The Laptop 4090 and desktop 4080 have the same core count and silicon. It would be more interesting to see how much the laptop 4090 is limited by its lower power draw and any cutbacks to the chip design such as fewer RT cores and how much is the discrepancy with ray tracing enabled vs pure rasterisation performance.
You can see the comparison of these cards at notebookcheck (UA-cam removes the full link), in general 4080 laptop is faster in some games, slower in others. Same for benchmarks
@@DeepInsideZettaiRyouikiif your buying/building a pc with that much value, your going to be in a financial situation where you aren’t too worried about power bills. Lol.
My question is: Can a 4080 liquid cooled laptop provide a better visual experience on a 4k LG C1 OLED TV than a Xbox Series X when running upcoming games such as Starfield, Diablo IV, GTA VI, etc ? I mean, is it worth ditching XSX for a laptop or just stick with it for gaming a get 'random' heavily discounted laptop for portability and AutoCAD/Solidworks workloads ?
No doubt a laptop with 4080 offers a better visual experience using the same screen when compared to a Series X, the XSX is comparable to a laptop with a RTX 4060 at best.
I know it's too much work, but I'll just throw it out there -- at least highlighting and pointing out the median when you do the multi-game fps comparison at different resolutions might be more valuable than focusing solely on the average. The reason is that there are a few outliers that are affecting the average noticeably enough that the average is not necessarily as representative of the difference as the median would. Anyway, this is a dumb comment, but i've been thinking this each time I watch one of your videos (which I love, BTW; i watch them all), so i figured I would mention it at least one time.....Have a great weekend man.
About what I expected. Given the 4090 mobile is around 10 to 15% faster than the 4080 mobile, while the 4090 desktop is around 30% faster than a 4080 desktop, it makes sense that the gap between a 4080 mobile versus desktop is narrower than the gap between a 4090 mobile versus desktop. It would be interesting to make a comparison between the 4090 mobile and the 4080 desktop or the 4070ti.
Honestly, should compare laptop 4090 with the desktop 4080, judging based on everything, iam guessing diff may be around 20-25%? As if they couldnt put the chipset according to name for laptops as well.. so stupid and sneaky by Nvidia
rtx 4090 laptop vs the rtx 4080 desktop would be much more interesting as they're both ad103. I think in that comparison the laptop would look much more impressive.
@Captain_Morgan Yes it would. The higher the clockspeeds are, the less energy efficient a chip is, and the lower the clockspeeds are, the more energy efficient it is. Look at a 70 watt RTX 3060 - it still has about 80% of the desktop 3060 performance - because it has more cores, despite working at just 40% the power limit.
@@TabalugaDragon yes, they used a 1 tier down GPU chip for each segment for laptops. On top of that each chip is "nerfed". Why not used a nerfed Ad102 for 4090 laptop / nerfed ad103 for 4080 laptop etc... At least it's the same GPU chip as its desktop counterpart.
@@hardwarevsgaming if by "nerfed" you mean "downclocked with the same number of cores" then I agree. Cutting down the cuda core count is always a bad idea, as seen on the laptop 3070.
Why do people care about laptop / desktop comparisons?!?! If you want a laptop, you are gonna get a laptop regardless If you want to play all the latest games at the highest settings, you are gonna get a desktop. It's a pointless comparison. Comparing a 150W GPU with a 300W GPU is laughable.
It's kind of a 'for science' comparison (that he has done for a couple gens now). The scope of the video wasn't to prove what gaming laptop enthusiasts already know or to rant about the naming, it was just to show people the actual performance between the two closely named products so that you can help yourself and help others that might not understand the difference. Agreed that 'what desktop model does this M model compare to' vids would be interesting, and plenty are also asking (nicely) for that, so maybe team JT will do those.
"Comparing a 150W GPU with a 300W GPU is laughable." yet at that difference, a laptop 3070 ti was only 17% slower on average than desktop 3070 ti. Laugh as much as you want, but laptops still perform really well, even at much lower power limits.
Hello Jarrod! What about a video of 4070 vs 4080 laptops, but just with the dlss3 and/or FG also enabled. So we can see if the difference after those options are still pretty big, or if those options reduce the gap between both. Thanks as always!!
Great comparison video. Thanks a lot. I am missing a benchmark where you undervolt the desktop gpu till it’s nearly drawing as much power than the mobile does. Would be great to see how they performe with similar power usage.
For a laptop with a 4080 GPU, it's more powerful than the desktop options you suggested for artificial intelligence tasks. However, considering the energy consumption, let's calculate the electricity cost difference over 3 years. Assuming 250 watts for 8 hours of operation daily equals 2 kilowatt-hours, which costs about $0.6. Multiplying this by 300 days a year and 3 years gives $540. Considering the likely higher energy consumption difference, a laptop's total cost over 3 years becomes comparable to that of a desktop
It would be more interesting comparing 2 GPUs with the same DIE: 4090 Mobile with 4080 Desktop and undervolt the Desktop GPU to be close or match the 4090 Mobile in powerdraw.
Was looking for videos about RTX 4080 Laptop, clicked on this one and saw you wearing the t-shirt of my favourite band. Instant like! Also, thanks for the great video :)
It is quite interesting when you think about it. Of course, there is a big difference between laptop and desktop and there will always be. The question is if it will matter for so much longer. Today's laptops consume 175W of TGP. I recollect that high-end desktops in the Pascal-generation were about the same. Other features makes the difference smaller. So laptops aren't that much worse. They are about two generations behind, sometimes less, which is impressive, because who wouldn't prefer laptop gaming if not for the perf difference and the upgradeability? The problem is that nVidia now charge outrageous prices for their mislabeled cards and AMD isn't putting up a fight. Only two years ago, at the mining boom, you got an equally performing laptop for the same or less. Not anymore. Still, and people will get angry with this opinion, I foresee the laptop market taking more market shares at the expense of desktops. Maybe tablets, mobiles or consoles will gain. I don't know. I only know that hobbyism isn't a sellying point anymore. How many end-users run Linux? And it is a fact that the laptop format is way more practical.
Hey Jarrod, I really enjoy your content! So, I have a question: Are you planning to do a comparison of the 4090 vs. 4080 vs. 4070 vs. 4060 on the XMG NEO 16 platform ? Also, will there be a bigger NEO 16 Review coming any time soon ? Thanks (:
I dont get the point of these videos. When Jarrod asked we wanted to see true equivalent comparisons, like 4090m vs 4080, 4080m vs 4070 ti etc. We already know, other than the name and transistor tech/design, mobile and desktop dont anything else in common, because ngreedia doesnt give af about giving a proper naming to mobile, like they did for 2 FULL GENS. If someone gets fooled expecting the same hardware that's also their fault (alongside NV). It takes 20 seconds to google the specs to understand what you get...
yeah I mean it's not like the laptop 4080 is literally called "RTX 4080" just like the desktop version. Yes it has officially "laptop GPU" but I've seen plenty of times not only laptop manufacturers but online shops completely omitting it, making it look like a DESKTOP 4080, just with lower power limits. So after 2 gens of using desktop chips in laptops it's reasonable to think Nvidia is continuing this trend.
Please compare same laptop with internal Rtx 4080 and when it's connected to external desktop rtx 4080 via USB-c. I'm curious if it's worth getting any laptop that can better utilize the external rtx 4080 graphics than internal one and get that one for gaming and 3d modeling at home.
like an external gpu enclosure? if so I wouldn't recommend it. the gpu will have worse performance due to bandwidth constraints and the enclusure can be expensive
I was thinking about getting a gaming laptop because it was cheap, but I changed my mind after I saw the more affordable high-end gaming desktop. Plus, it is also last longer and upgradeable than the gaming laptop. Furthermore, I know that gaming laptop is portability, but that is only advantage of it. I can't wait for my gaming desktop and big screen monitor!🤩🤩🤩
We have come to a point of laptop are cheaper than a desktop I would love a comparison of these two: "X13 Flow with XG Mobile 3080" vs "4080 Laptop" aka Mobile ...many of us are considering cheap-ish 3080 while in stock (or used)
Wow, so that means that this RTX 4080 laptop (not sure if you tested on water cooling, as most laptops don't have that. ALmost no one will buy that) would be about only 5% slower than my huge RTX 3090 desktop.... that hurts considering how much money I spent on that card (almost a new laptop), the RAM, motherboard, CPU, all the water cooling.. Edit: I guess you did test it with the water cooler. I would only use that at home and I will likely not have it at all. For work, I just use a Macbook Pro M2Max that I got given. Sounds like it's not worth building computers anymore which it pretty sad.
Could you include the external GPU to comparison too? I mean having ultra portable laptop + eGPU how will it perform comparing to desktop and gaming laptop. Also in terms of price
No external Gpus work as well as having it internally connected via a pcie. USB4 just can't keep up, the most you can use is a 3060ti, above that and you'll be paying for no extra performance.
Dude stop!!!!. We know the SKU of the 4080 laptop is based on the 4070ti Desktop. The DO A TEST BETWEEN THOSE!. We know Nvidia is screwing with the naming. We know the 4080 desktop will be faster, DUH! Waste of a video. A Good Video would be against the actual desktop counterpart, in this case is the 4070TI. GOD these reviewers keep making the wrong comparisons. We already know about the 4090 debacle, and the 30 series also
It's kind of a 'for science' comparison (that he has done for a couple gens now). Considering the laptop version has 12GB VRAM, and the desktop 16GB, your intuition can kind of guide you on how the laptop version will perform compared to the desktop.
My hot take: Nvidia should've named their 4090 laptop GPU as 4080 instead since the performance difference isn't far off with the 4080 desktop. It will save them from the "not really a 40*0" cycle.
3 months later in my country, there is MSI with their 1970 USD converted, 12900HX RTX4080 selling here. It's probably a bit weaker than the model you shown here but the price difference is massive. I'm definitely getting that laptop since it's so much cheaper now
I am very impressed woth how close Laptops are actually getting to desktop performance, i remember just 10 years ago, a gaming laptop was not even close to a realistic option but now im considering a gaming laptop for when traveling with work
To be fair with the RTX 4080 laptop, it's faster than the last generation RTX 3080 desktop GPU. So can you bring or stuff your desktop with RTX 3080 into your backpack?
I mean idk, a 4090 desktop still has issues with running 60 fps on games where absolutely everything is maxed out on 4k res with ray-tracing and such. Now games don't necessarily need all that to look great but if you're a pc enthusiast who wants the absolute best of everything a high end 40 series definitely has value.
Roughly yes. I get benchmark results and actual gaming performance similar to that of a desktop 3080 12gb - or Ti with my 4080 laptop. In games that support dlss 3 and FG the performance is better on the laptop. I get 80 or so frames in Witcher when in Novigrad with everything maxed at 2k whereas my desktop with 3090 was struggling to maintain 40 - 45 frames in the same extremely densely populated area.
I think its pretty clear that instead of getting a really “good” gaming laptop you could just do a “budget” 4070 ti (or maybe 4070 when it comes) desktop build for around 2000$ and also get a m1 macbook for around 1000$ and still be a lot cheaper than a 4090 laptop with similar performance (and you get an actual good laptop which is stable, goes to sleep properly and performs full power on battery)
nope, 3070 ti laptop was only 17% slower, this one is like 40-50% slower. Because there isn't much difference in specs between the laptop and desktop 3070 ti, but a big difference in specs here.
Interesting that we’re seeing the Nvidia laptop gpus dipping heavily in the 1% lows in a number of newer titles 😱🤯. Not something you wanna see on a ~$3k laptop 💻! Might as well buy an RTX30-series GPU OR power limit your expensive new laptop GPU to keep stable fps averages and 1% lows 😢🤔
My old 1070 ASUS finally bit the dust and right now I can get open box in excellent condition M16R1 with 7845HX and 4080 or $1650... 16 gig Ram pre-installed is a minor bummer but 50 bucks I'll fix that 1 TB SSD240 hurts QHD16 inch display.... Really think and I'm gonna go for it, how are you 4080 laptop owners feeling with your purchases? What did you all get as you set up would you pay and how you liking it?
Would love to see what kind of laptop you'd have to get to meet and exceed the legendary 1080TI desktop card. I realize that may be an unreasonable test, just a wild wonder of mine

The cost for desktop should also include similar display, speaker, and keyboard vs laptop
Yeah that would be helpful
Well, even it included. Although it may cost same. I believe desktop is way better overall. Better display, better speaker, everything else
100% agree
I've had the same screens/mouse/keyboards across my last 3 desktops. So no, don't include them.
Those are user variant, raw performance is only what's compared here
you should compare desktop 4080 to laptop 4090, then it's pretty much identical specs except the energy use
U can underolt the pc gpu with no performance impact
There's like maybe a 10-15% uplift between the laptop 4080 and 4090 at best
Exactly, that would be a more logical and interesting comparison. We already knew the naming is irrelevant and I don't need to watch the video to know that the desktop obliterates the laptop 4080. What would actually be interesting is comparing the most powerful laptop to its nearest desktop equivalent based on the specs (not the naming)
true, RTX 4080 Mobile is using AD104 that is also used by RTX4070TI and RTX4070 desktop variant. RTX 4090 mobile is using AD103 that is used in RTX4080 desktop variant.
It's pretty clear Nvidia just bumped the names of their laptop chips up one tier.
Whould be very interesting to compare Laptop 4080 VS Desktop 4070/4070ti since they share the same GPU die.
Mobile 4080 performs very close to a dekstop 4070
It would be nice to see a comparison between the RTX 4090 Laptop vs the RTX 4080 Desktop since they use similar chips. Great video by the way!
Same here 😊
4080M vs 4080..
Only Big thing we easily to see here, that they had not same Die note GPU..
- AD104 vs Newer AD103 (?) Seriously ?
Totally agree..
Also please compare these two:
"X13 Flow with XG Mobile 3080"
vs "4080 Laptop" aka Mobile
...many of us are considering cheap-ish 3080 while in stock (or used)
And because the laptop 4090 is the true successor to the laptop 3080. NIVIDA moved the naming scheme over one notch in the laptops to get people to pay more for less. That's why you can get a 4090 in a laptop this generation but you could only get up to a 3080 before.
A few people have asked for it, so it'll be coming up this week.
It would be interesting to see comparison between 4080 desktop and 4090 laptop as they have very similar chip. Also NEO seems to be quite poorly cooled by air as most other 4090 and 4080 laptops don't hit temp limit on GPU, though they are much louder
Agreed
The desktop version is basically as big as the laptop itself. I'm not surprised by the difference in performance, or rather I am but in favor of the laptop version being so tiny yet so performing with reasonable temperatures
Exactly, when Jays two Cents showed the size comparison over the years I was blown away at the 4090s size.
I mean like, yes, but 5 years ago we had Rog G703s with gtx1080s actually OUTMATCHING the desktop gtx1080
I have the same problem on my 4090 laptop
Thank you for making all of these comparison videos so informative!
Glad you like them!
They should bring back the "M" suffix on nvidia mobile GPU
The level of quality and professionalism of Jarrod’s videos is unparalleled 👌
Great comparison. I think including the avg energy cost comparison would show that the laptop really is a eco friendly solution in the long term. That desktop build is going to draw around 700w at best, whereas the laptop is around 330w max.
EXACTLY what i was saying about operational costs. 180% more power for 33% of frame boost (looking from laptop GPU side) ...GLHF
RTX 4080 laptop should be %34 cheaper than desktop
It should perform similar to the machine in this video.
They are likely resold Clevo/Tongfang laptops, just like the XMG Neo in the video. I think they should be fine.
Can you compare cards with the same dye like desktop 4080 with laptop 4090
That should be coming up this week.
I plan on releasing that this week.
@@JarrodsTech thanks❤️
to me personally nvidia is just borderline scamming people by naming their mobile gpus like their desktop gpus. theyre factually not the same products. bring back the "rtx 4080m" or at least max q naming scheme or people will trust you less year by year. if the laptop 4090 ist weaker than a desktop 4070 something is REALLY wrong.
Suddenly I miss the days when NVIDIA used MaxQ to designate the laptop version of the cards. At least it was clear to average customers that the desktop and laptop graphics cards were two distinct lines of products.
Bro now all laptops gpus are maxq. The Titan of today, the MSI GT77 HX, is sooo much lighter and smaller than the gt75
Kinda ridiculous, anyway would love to see your website cover more areas soon TM.
pls compare desktop 4070ti and laptop 4080 since there is only 3% or so difference in cuda cores.
very useful comparison n presentation! thanks for ur hardwork!

Good job man!
Should compare 4080 of with 4090 laptop as they’re are the same chip. Good video though
That video should be coming up this week!
Please compare rtx 4080 laptop with 4070 desktop and rtx 4090 laptop with 4070ti desktop, will be very same I think
I was hoping for a rtx 4080 laptop vs 3080 desktop 😢
You can see the comparison of these cards at notebookcheck (UA-cam removes the full link), in general 4080 laptop is faster in some games, slower in others. Same for benchmarks
yeah... seems about right. 4070 die power limited and called a 4080. typical nvidia
As expected, 4080 desktop has 30% more CUDA cores than 4080 mobile and it also clocks 15-20% higher. Translate to 35 to 45% more performance.
Yea... and eats 180% of power. Add this into calculation, 5 years of power bills. GL HF

I should have a 4090 laptop vs 4080 desktop video up this week.
@JarrodsTech I read somewhere that the 1% low issue with Forza Horizon 5 is because of G-Sync. Playing the game at fixed refresh rate fixes the issue.
I have the RTX 4080 in my laptop and no matter the differences it really really does move. I'm extremely happy with it
I know it's too much work, but I'll just throw it out there -- at least highlighting and pointing out the median when you do the multi-game fps comparison at different resolutions might be more valuable than focusing solely on the average.
This wasn't a dumb comment at all, I agree with this take heavily.

Very helpful video!
I wonder why Nvidia didn't used a trimmed down version of AD102 for RTX 4090 laptop GPU and cutdown AD103 for 4080 laptop GPU (and so on) instead... 🤔
The reason starts with an m and ends with a y
it's AD103 for 4090m and AD104 for 4080m actually. The reason is greed.
If you want a laptop, you are gonna get a laptop regardless
If you want to play all the latest games at the highest settings, you are gonna get a desktop.
Laugh as much as you want, but laptops still perform really well, even at much lower power limits.
thanks a lot!!
Hello Jarrod! What about a video of 4070 vs 4080 laptops, but just with the dlss3 and/or FG also enabled. So we can see if the difference after those options are still pretty big, or if those options reduce the gap between both. Thanks as always!!
Thank you again.
Good video. Can you review the framework laptop and show us its performance.

@@JarrodsTech thanks
There's no point of high end GPU for me. Most I'll be able to afford is a 3050 or 4050 laptop. So Jarrod, when can we expect a video on that??
I barely find rtx 4050 laptop axepecially on budget gaming laptop like asus tuf, acer nitro, hp victus, etc on my country
Agree, especially with undertcolting!
you won't match the laptop one by just undervolting it. You'd also have to underclock it as well or limit the wattage.
Afaik a 4070ti desktop is about a 4090 laptop
Hey Jarrod, I really enjoy your content! So, I have a question: Are you planning to do a comparison of the 4090 vs. 4080 vs. 4070 vs. 4060 on the XMG NEO 16 platform ? Also, will there be a bigger NEO 16 Review coming any time soon ? Thanks (:
Yes to both!

Please compare 4080 laptop vs 3080ti desktop
So after 2 gens of using desktop chips in laptops it's reasonable to think Nvidia is continuing this trend.
but the laptop price includes the display and the PC not so thats not really a fair comparison

GPU prices are a joke these days. Laptops are the way forward and massively cut electricity bills.
Can you do a comparison between Intel i9 13980hx vs amd r9 7945hx laptop cpu please
waiting for that.
The only golden gaming laptop years were around 2018-2021 when the only difference between laptop and desktop CPU was the clocks and power consumption
So is the 4080 laptop equivalent to a 3090?
I'd like to see a 4070ti desktop vs 4080 laptop...that feels to be a good comparison
4070ti desktop is better than 4080 laptop.
Thank you. I feel that the industry should change names based on wattage. It will make purchasing decisions much easier.

Considering the laptop version has 12GB VRAM, and the desktop 16GB, your intuition can kind of guide you on how the laptop version will perform compared to the desktop.
I think it will be the same as a 4070ti performance
My hot take:
Nvidia should've named their 4090 laptop GPU as 4080 instead since the performance difference isn't far off with the 4080 desktop.
It will save them from the "not really a 40*0" cycle.
They're technically the same die.
3 months later in my country, there is MSI with their 1970 USD converted, 12900HX RTX4080 selling here. It's probably a bit weaker than the model you shown here but the price difference is massive. I'm definitely getting that laptop since it's so much cheaper now
I am very impressed woth how close Laptops are actually getting to desktop performance, i remember just 10 years ago, a gaming laptop was not even close to a realistic option but now im considering a gaming laptop for when traveling with work
Damn we didn't know you're are fan of ENSIFERUM. That's really cool dude!!!
To be fair with the RTX 4080 laptop, it's faster than the last generation RTX 3080 desktop GPU. So can you bring or stuff your desktop with RTX 3080 into your backpack?
Bought a 3080 for 400 xD 3070ti laptop for 1000€ and with 2000€ i made a desktop and a laptop ahaha. Saved 1000€😂🎉
This test would change if using the new Framework 16 with upgradeable GPU :)
You know that they will still be using mobile gpus right?
still mobile gpu. the idea sounds cool. hopefully the cooling can keep up.
The laptop 40 series is great but pc gpu this year are overkill. Nice job jarod like everytime.
Another great comparison, well done
Excellent vid
I vote for a laptop 4090 vs desktop 4080
Is the 4080 mobile basically a 3080 ti desktop?
Roughly yes. I get benchmark results and actual gaming performance similar to that of a desktop 3080 12gb - or Ti with my 4080 laptop.
In games that support dlss 3 and FG the performance is better on the laptop. I get 80 or so frames in Witcher when in Novigrad with everything maxed at 2k whereas my desktop with 3090 was struggling to maintain 40 - 45 frames in the same extremely densely populated area.
@@Coonakoswaiting for fsr3. Hell ya amd on this.
Very similar to 3070ti laptop and desktop comparison Jarrod did a while ago. This mid area of gpu’s are where desktop and laptop are more equal.
nope, 3070 ti laptop was only 17% slower, this one is like 40-50% slower.
When is the rtx 4050 vs 3060 video coming please?
Yes
4090 laptop vs 4080 desktop please
Dude that laptop is insaane 😮
Would love to see what kind of laptop you'd have to get to meet and exceed the legendary 1080TI desktop card. I realize that may be an unreasonable test, just a wild wonder of mine
Hey, I wanted to ask you that you should make a video on laptops we can buy right now
And if it's okay to buy laptop with RTX 30 series or we should wait for RTX 40 series laptops
