FOR YALL PEOPLE WORRIED: i got the A2 first day it came out here in china. i fly it every day. ii tested every mode and made several different anti jello mounts. - battery time is no problem at all. while you swap lipos just snap the cam on the charger and thats enough to be able to fly for many hours. - internal storage is big enough for hours in the field of filming under normal circumstances. - the transfer to internal SD is slow? yes for now but i hope they will fix it with firmware later as some other small things. for now you just copy the files over wifi to your phone. its fast at 35mb/s. dont know why you got 25mb/s josh. - video quality is brilliant for the size. not same as gopro10. there are some distortion at the most outer edges compare to gopro. its not much and doesnt bother me at all. - stabilizer is on par with gopro and co. nothing to be ashamed of. its epic! - overheating is NOT AN ISSUE and same "bad" as gopro. inside without airflow both cams will overheat. (i tested it inside a case in my car and it runs 12minutes and then shut off) in flight inside case it NEVER overheats. i fly at 40C° weather here. no problem at all at standard heat setting. - give it some time for firmware updates. the cam is just out 1 week. i love it more every time i fly this cam.
Are the magnetic mounts strong enough for 5 inch. I don’t really crash and mostly fly my cinelog not a 5 inch but I just am worried that I will land and my camera will be gone. Also is it durable from his crash I think it did well as I’ve not had a crash that bad ever so idk I’m more worried about losing it not breaking it. Also my is in the mail got it for half off lol
On the bright side it sounds like a lot of the negatives can be fixed with firmware updates. As for the power issue, maybe we can use a mag adapter to power from quad power?
@@rjsvids I think this video is highly biased. I had a gopro hero 10 a few days ago till i took it back and the image quality was terribly muddy and not nice at all. I found the action 2 footage much sharper and nicer than the gopro hero 10. No matter what settings i used on the hero 10 i could not get sharp image.
This is SO almost good. It's so frustrating that all the technology exists to make the perfect FPV recording camera but the market isn't big enough to make it happen.
I picked one up and I love it. But, there is no way of use it like a GoPro or any other action cam for deaf or damaging it. Lol The design is amazing, the look and feel is incredible, but I baby this thing like no other just because the lens and screens are so exploded and not easily replaced. The audio is surprisingly good with the lens mod attached also.
I'm guessing the DJI would win in this comparison for resolution/ frame rate bitrate, but it still just looks weird with the fisheye which I believe is a big reason no there cube cams has been big a success
you should have kept the DJI on superview or ultra wide and compared the details with the gopro to avoid the cropping as you mentioned. that way we're testing the potential of the cam. also you should compare the DJI Action 2 to the Hero 7 which a lot of us use over the 10 for FPV since it's the best GoPro for FPV IMO since it's lighter, doesn't have a big front color screen, replaceable lens cover, etc

Sharpness comparison is good - good for gopro! At least the scaling isn't as sloppy as we've seen it on some older cams (Foxeer?) You got your own editor? Congrats - but where's the fun then? :) If you read at only 35mb/sek from SD to PC - I'd switch to using either a proper SD Card reader or use the USB 3 instead of 2 - just saying ;) Great review - still looking forward now to testing it myself. I'd wanted to an in-depth comparison like this but only had my hands on the camera long enough to gather footage and just review my reaction to using it in the field on an FPV trip. And great to see they've fixed the stabilization glitch on roll... I was able to replicate it consistently on my pre-production version; nice to see you didnt have that issue. Thanks for the pixel peep, DJI advertised 130mbps, which should translate into a much better quality image but unfortunately there’s isn’t much of a difference to justify the workflow
I own one and the battery life and no SD-Card sucks. So here is my plan: When the "no screen battery" version comes out, I get one of them. Then I disassemble it! Try to remove the battery and add a lipo balance lead connector either through USB-C or "internally". Then I probably 3d print a case for this "socket". That should not increase the weight by a lot but let's use the drone LiPo for charging the camera internal battery while flying, recording to the internal SD-Card, and even has the USB-C if needed. If some company is clever there is a huge opportunity to make such extension commercially (Beta-FPV as usual?). The image quality is good enough I guess. the durability will be much better with a proper case. I think this to just another level!
Man I’m still going to keep my pre order in for the one with the battery module. Just the weight savings will add the performance edge I’m looking for by getting back to that 620ishg mark with decent hd.
I feel u get the action 2 over hero just to save weight. From my hero 9 to action 2 I'd save 62g even with hero9 with no battery My thing just can I get 30mins or longer recording for long range 🤔 This just be an upgrade over Go2 Go2 at pro does 24mins .. much longer at regular video
Great review as always!!! I cancelled my order from Best Buy after seeing how long the transfer times took for Drew’s video and a few other videos. I REALLY want this to be a Session5 replacement but honestly, if I wanted excellent footage, Id go for a Hero 8 or Hero 10…naked if doing cinematic work. If I was doing casual flying and just wanted good footage (like what I would use a Session5 for at this point), I’m opting to “good enough” with a Peanut or Instago2/wired connection. That allows for easier sharing to social media without any fuss unlike Session5. So Action 2 really never fit for me and this review just confirms it. It’s an amazing camera, but not worth it. Someday…maybe. But not yet.
Dude. Runcam 2 orange/Caddx ORCA is 99 bucks and you can throw it through fire. With 500 bucks I could buy 5 of these badasses. Inexpensive and guilty free to wreck them all up
Personally, my Orca was DOA which is why I never reviewed it. RunCam Orange has mediocre image quality, but usable for some situations. These cameras are certainly marketed at those who want to pay more for higher quality image and more performance.

I think the issue with the battery can eventually be solved with external power through the mount. But only 22g of memory is laughable, even instaGo2 has 29, and there's already 64g go2 version. DJI needs to come out with a 64g version of this. I really want to love this camera, but the price and memory size stops me. Good thing the season is over and i'm only gonna be looking for upgrade next year.
No battery replacement, slow file transfer speeds, too expensive. This is not for me. I love my hero 7, it's still widely available here in my neck of the woods. Maybe Runcam can come to the rescue with a better version of their orange 4k cube. That would be great. You know what else is great? JB temp measurements in metrics! DJI won’t give us the action camera we want because they have a DJI FPV drone to sell. Let’s just wait for GoPro’s answer and hopefully they’ll release a new Session.
I did buy it and I will never go back to go pro for couple reason. Its half the weight and and 1/3 the size whcioh gives me more flight time. The fact its so easy to use and gives me all I need taht go pro did. Sorry GoPro you were good bro.
Limited storage and battery life is not a deal breaker for me, not even the activation. What kills it for me is the price. I'm even wondering if the Caddx Peanut might be better value if you don't need high quality footage.
Not having a swappable battery I'm totally fine with it. I started with the session 5, so I'm used to having to charge it. Not having swappable memory is a massive fail
it is insane slow in the test I have done getting footage from the camera to the sd card. at least 15 min for me when I have done it. i bypass it to USB c cable straight to the computer.. that has also caused issues with it seeing my sd card after. to fix it I had to reformat the sd card in a freggin gopro than put it back in the action to format. go figure. lol
I am willing to bet that gopro will release a camera with internal memory and internal batterie. they did mention that in survey. When they do the Action 4 will have 128gb and better batterie life.

Hi, Joshua. Big fan. I fly, fly, fly. All-day and night long. I could care less about recording video. My question is, Is there an easy way to use The Dji goggles with one of my Walkera F210s? I'm not afraid to spend money such as buying the iFlight 7" long flying drone if that's what I have to do to get a "Ready-To-Fly" setup pairing the DJI goggles with a kick-ass drone. Please answer this question. I'm scared to death of going into The Beta Flight system. -Bill Howes.
So basically DJI has a lot of little things to fix to make this a good camera. Looks like I'll be waiting for better firmware. Note that regarding the battery limitation, some people are already working on adapter to plug it to the lipo directly.
It sad to think what this camera could have been though. A session with a screen and higher quality video recording was all I and most people wanted. The year is 2021 for christ sake, all of the technology exits to make this the perfect FPV recording camera yet here we are with this incredibly limited POS. Like 22GB of non-expandable internal storage on the base unit and no replacable battery, what the hell where they thinking?
Hi, I'm passionate about lightweight action cameras but I don't use drones but rather off-road motorbikes. In your opinion, is it possible to take a 10 bones and glue a mini battery like the one from the 5 session to it so as to make it "portable"? crazy or possible idea, however I'm only sorry for the fact that it's not waterproof but I'm intrigued by the performance, the low weight and the high level cooling
I picked up this camera to replace a naked GoPro on small cinewhoops for commercial use. I though I had a setting wrong bc the footage seemed soft, I’m on the fence about keeping it. The only reason I haven’t already returned it is the durability vs a naked GoPro.
Yeah ... you pretty much nailed every thought I had about it when DJI launched & all specs definitely were available, instantly put all Action 2 ideas to the side & ordered a GoPro 10. I could have lived with all caveats ... the built in battery, the low battery life, the storage & offload problem, yeah, everything even the lower video quality ... but not for that kind of $$$. This weekend I flew 15 packs with my 5" with the GoPro 10 on, without battery only powered from the balance lead ... the work around the camera & videoing only consisted of one ND filter change & attaching the power cable to each battery balance lead between the flights ... nothing more. With the Action 2 I most probably had left it there in the woods in pure frustration. With GoPro ... even though also expensive, it's a no-brainer to use & manage & I don't feel at all ripped off. With it's lightened 118grams it's not anything for my smaller quads, granted ... but even if I buy a Runcam 5 Orange or a CaddX Peanut extra ... for in total more $$$, I still wouldn't feel ripped off. Rest in peace DJI Action 2 ... for me you're dead.
hey Joshua, I am about to make a purchase , either a used gopro hero 6 for 170€ (sadly even these got very expensive), or an action 2 for 239€ brand new with the power pack... is the dynamic range with the shadows and stuff worse than the gopro 6? I need something cheap, that is able to stabilize in post with gyroflow. which the gp6 is capable of, gp8 is not worth the price to me, and the lens cover sucks. compared to a 9 or 10. and something like the insta360go2 does not get the image quality I like (worse than gp6 I think.) even though it is nice for my smaller quad... I think I'd rather go with the 6 which I can convert to a naked one if necessary... would love to hear your opinion on this..
Thank you for the honest review :) i have one thing to add in the durability section, if you have to use an insurance it isn’t a really durable camera. It shouldn’t be necessary to have one. Also the newer GoPro generations are weaker then their predecessors. My Session 5 did take tons of hits over the years and is still working fine. With that in mind i think it is not near as durable compared to the session.
There is less resolution on the action 2 because of the wider fov. Imagine if you put 180 degree field of view camera 4k and then you zoom in. It’s going to be more like 2 k. It’s just a different camera
Great review from a practical point of view. Recently there was a firmware upgrade which sped up the internal copy process by 50% or so. And reduced heating issues a bit, according to some other users. DJI is one of the few companies who do not just "fire and forget" but constantly improve their products by software upgrades. The Osmo Pocket became a way better device after one year of software upgrades. Same with the Mini-2 drone and many others. I would not be surprised if DJI really worked hard on this products software too. Let's wait how this device will develop over the months simply by firmware upgrades.
I don't understand why FPV pilots feel the need to run a heavy GoPro at all, whether it's a Session or a newer model. You don't need (or mostly, want) image stabilisation so might as well stick something like a Runcam2 or one of the dozens of similar cheap chinese small action cams on there to keep the weight down and capture good quality movies. Or, if you don't mind spending a bit more, an Insta 360 Go 2 which is probably unbeatable in weight to image quality ratio.

For me I went with the action 2 upgrading from a hero session 4. Main reason price I got the screen combo for 46 percent off or 278 usd. Also I fly a cinelog 25 with my session so 150 grams is not an option so for me it was quite obvious.
I really do like the action 2 as an upgrade from the go2. The screen makes is easier to use, it has less jitter. The bad news is I had it activated in E.U. Can I restore factory settings and reconnect when (pretending to be) in the U.S? To get rid of the temperature limit?
Max lens mod will make hero 10 to be able to do horizon in 360 spin (in 2.7k quality) . 9 had it, but 10 just promised it via firmware update that does not seem to have arrived yet.
Hi Josh I just love the size of the DJI Action 2, but that's it. I don't care that it doesn't have a SD Slot. But the worse part is the power. The video is great but then the price kills it. I have a problem with HD cameras, I fly mostly micros and I can't carry a GoPro. Unfortunately it means that I don't use a action camera. I have to rely on my googles for videos. Thanks again for the video and information about the DJI action 2.
For me as an amateur, i will keep my caddx orca. Cheaper, a bit of stabilisation, no screen to brake, could do 4K but prefer 1080p50 to edit, SD card, USB, picture is ok...

I live in a place were, because of location , both Celsius and Fahrenheit are used interchangeably.

Runcam 5 Orange. I know i know it's not expensive so it gets glossed over but it's great.
Digital goggle recordings are better quality then an orange so whats even the point

I did buy it and I will never go back to go pro for couple reason. Its half the weight and and 1/3 the size whcioh gives me more flight time.

Limited storage and battery life is not a deal breaker for me, not even the activation. What kills it for me is the price. I'm even wondering if the Caddx Peanut might be better value if you don't need high quality footage.

Not having a swappable battery I'm totally fine with it. I started with the session 5, so I'm used to having to charge it.
Not having swappable memory is a massive fail
Though the wifi transfer is quite fast. You could just wifi out the footage while it charges. Just remember to have a big sd card in your phone.

it is insane slow in the test I have done getting footage from the camera to the sd card. at least 15 min for me when I have done it. i bypass it to USB c cable straight to the computer.. that has also caused issues with it seeing my sd card after. to fix it I had to reformat the sd card in a freggin gopro than put it back in the action to format. go figure. lol
I am willing to bet that gopro will release a camera with internal memory and internal batterie. they did mention that in survey. When they do the Action 4 will have 128gb and better batterie life.

Hi, Joshua. Big fan. I fly, fly, fly. All-day and night long. I could care less about recording video. My question is, Is there an easy way to use The Dji goggles with one of my Walkera F210s? I'm not afraid to spend money such as buying the iFlight 7" long flying drone if that's what I have to do to get a "Ready-To-Fly" setup pairing the DJI goggles with a kick-ass drone. Please answer this question. I'm scared to death of going into The Beta Flight system. -Bill Howes.
So basically DJI has a lot of little things to fix to make this a good camera. Looks like I'll be waiting for better firmware. Note that regarding the battery limitation, some people are already working on adapter to plug it to the lipo directly.
It sad to think what this camera could have been though. A session with a screen and higher quality video recording was all I and most people wanted. The year is 2021 for christ sake, all of the technology exits to make this the perfect FPV recording camera yet here we are with this incredibly limited POS. Like 22GB of non-expandable internal storage on the base unit and no replacable battery, what the hell where they thinking?

Hi, I'm passionate about lightweight action cameras but I don't use drones but rather off-road motorbikes. In your opinion, is it possible to take a 10 bones and glue a mini battery like the one from the 5 session to it so as to make it "portable"? crazy or possible idea, however I'm only sorry for the fact that it's not waterproof but I'm intrigued by the performance, the low weight and the high level cooling
I picked up this camera to replace a naked GoPro on small cinewhoops for commercial use. I though I had a setting wrong bc the footage seemed soft, I’m on the fence about keeping it. The only reason I haven’t already returned it is the durability vs a naked GoPro.
Yeah ... you pretty much nailed every thought I had about it when DJI launched & all specs definitely were available, instantly put all Action 2 ideas to the side & ordered a GoPro 10. I could have lived with all caveats ... the built in battery, the low battery life, the storage & offload problem, yeah, everything even the lower video quality ... but not for that kind of $$$.
This weekend I flew 15 packs with my 5" with the GoPro 10 on, without battery only powered from the balance lead ... the work around the camera & videoing only consisted of one ND filter change & attaching the power cable to each battery balance lead between the flights ... nothing more. With the Action 2 I most probably had left it there in the woods in pure frustration. With GoPro ... even though also expensive, it's a no-brainer to use & manage & I don't feel at all ripped off. With it's lightened 118grams it's not anything for my smaller quads, granted ... but even if I buy a Runcam 5 Orange or a CaddX Peanut extra ... for in total more $$$, I still wouldn't feel ripped off. Rest in peace DJI Action 2 ... for me you're dead.
hey Joshua, I am about to make a purchase , either a used gopro hero 6 for 170€ (sadly even these got very expensive), or an action 2 for 239€ brand new with the power pack... is the dynamic range with the shadows and stuff worse than the gopro 6? I need something cheap, that is able to stabilize in post with gyroflow. which the gp6 is capable of, gp8 is not worth the price to me, and the lens cover sucks. compared to a 9 or 10. and something like the insta360go2 does not get the image quality I like (worse than gp6 I think.) even though it is nice for my smaller quad... I think I'd rather go with the 6 which I can convert to a naked one if necessary... would love to hear your opinion on this..

Thank you for the honest review :) i have one thing to add in the durability section, if you have to use an insurance it isn’t a really durable camera. It shouldn’t be necessary to have one. Also the newer GoPro generations are weaker then their predecessors. My Session 5 did take tons of hits over the years and is still working fine. With that in mind i think it is not near as durable compared to the session.
New dji tech always has caveats never fails to disappoint. GoPro need to do another session and fast
There is less resolution on the action 2 because of the wider fov. Imagine if you put 180 degree field of view camera 4k and then you zoom in. It’s going to be more like 2 k. It’s just a different camera

Great review from a practical point of view. Recently there was a firmware upgrade which sped up the internal copy process by 50% or so. And reduced heating issues a bit, according to some other users. DJI is one of the few companies who do not just "fire and forget" but constantly improve their products by software upgrades. The Osmo Pocket became a way better device after one year of software upgrades. Same with the Mini-2 drone and many others. I would not be surprised if DJI really worked hard on this products software too. Let's wait how this device will develop over the months simply by firmware upgrades.

I don't understand why FPV pilots feel the need to run a heavy GoPro at all, whether it's a Session or a newer model. You don't need (or mostly, want) image stabilisation so might as well stick something like a Runcam2 or one of the dozens of similar cheap chinese small action cams on there to keep the weight down and capture good quality movies. Or, if you don't mind spending a bit more, an Insta 360 Go 2 which is probably unbeatable in weight to image quality ratio.
You clearly have no hands on experience in testing different cameras on a fpv drone

For me I went with the action 2 upgrading from a hero session 4. Main reason price I got the screen combo for 46 percent off or 278 usd. Also I fly a cinelog 25 with my session so 150 grams is not an option so for me it was quite obvious.
what happens when you compare the action 2 superwide with gopro superview? I actually like that super wide with blurry edges look!
I really do like the action 2 as an upgrade from the go2. The screen makes is easier to use, it has less jitter. The bad news is I had it activated in E.U. Can I restore factory settings and reconnect when (pretending to be) in the U.S? To get rid of the temperature limit?

Max lens mod will make hero 10 to be able to do horizon in 360 spin (in 2.7k quality) . 9 had it, but 10 just promised it via firmware update that does not seem to have arrived yet.
Hi Josh I just love the size of the DJI Action 2, but that's it. I don't care that it doesn't have a SD Slot. But the worse part is the power. The video is great but then the price kills it. I have a problem with HD cameras, I fly mostly micros and I can't carry a GoPro. Unfortunately it means that I don't use a action camera. I have to rely on my googles for videos.
