Wow, so you're using SmartThings, with ActionTiles, Google Nest Hub, Google Home, Alexa Devices, Hubitat, and mini hubs for various IoT devices!!!! Kudos to you to even remember which item triggers what automation. This is certainly a Hub overflow!
Well, this is a tour of everything I have. :) I have many of these things for the purposes of the channel. Primarily, I'm using ST w/ActionTiles and Google for automation. :)
@@AutomateYourLife Thanks for your reply and for sharing your smart tech. I understand. I'm similarly using ST w/ActionTiles and Alexa for voice commands. Automations on Alexa and WebCore.
The fire tablet for the cameras is a very neat setup . Mine and your kitchens are very similar! I have smart things sensors connected to every drawer and cabinet that correspond to the light closest to it
I am impressed with this video. You have a lot of smart devices, and they are in your kitchen. Cool! I have at least two takeaways from your video. I must get some of that two-sided tape so that I can install a couple of LED light strips. I also turned off all the mics onl my Google Nest Hubs. It hasn't been a real problem, but your video reminded me to turn the mics off. I will be looking at this video again to see if I can get more takeaways. Much thanks.
Good stuff Brian! So many great ideas. It's funny, my kitchen is probably my least automated room in the house. I recently counted 205+ IoT devices in my house and as I'm watching your video, I can only count 3 in the kitchen.
Great video Brian. You got me intrigued with the one click buttons. Correction on how apart the access points have to be. It's 30 feet max not centimeters, for best performance. Of course walls can reduce that. One thing I have found, at least with the 1st Gen Google WiFi, is that when you are moving them around to find the optimal placement, it's best to factory reset them if you have moved them a significant distance. Otherwise, the mesh test is not accurate. Also after you have moved them and are satisfied, run a network wifi test for all the devices so you can see to which access point each device is connecting to. When you reset the access point everything will reconnect to the other access point and stay that way until you reboot or power cycle the devices not connecting to the closest access point. The device will have a slower connection because it's connecting to a point that's farther away.
Hey Hans! I was actually talking about general distance from humans, not distance from the other mesh nodes when I said 30 cm. That's the safety testing distance that's used and so spending significant time within that 1 foot space is not necessarily healthy for you.
Excellent video, I thought I would mention a great way to stick devices to the wall or other compatible surfaces, is the 3M Command strips hook and loop. They hold extremely well, I use them for several devices.
Great tour and video, Brian! You put a lot of work into what you have and the video showed it. Since it was a kitchen tour I kept expecting you'd show us your moose-a-matic that I'm sure is an essential appliance for folks way up there in Alberta!.
Besides costing too much for what it does, you have too many control interfaces and few questionable choices: $40 tape instead $4 box of white cable staples if not running wires in the wall; sensitive strip is $50 disposable after
You're pretty sure you have it all figured! You should show it off. PS. Had the sensative strips for 2 years already. Totally fine in my installs. And I've moved.
Wonderful collection of ideas and devices. Very helpful and inspiring. Especial like the Flic button and Switch Bot and have bookmarked the video for future reference. . I have a related question and would like to hear your thoughts about a device. Is there a smart wall fan timer. One that could be turned on for a number of minutes via remote button or command. Importantly reliable turn off even if connectivity subsequently is lost. Every kitchen and bathroom could use one of these. Follow up comment added on added June 7. Thank you Brian for your smart switch tip. Turns out TP-Link Kasa has a Smart Action for an Auto-off timer. So when the fan switch is turned on the smart action will turn it off a few minutes later. Works when turned on manually or by voice command.
I’ve added a Dyson TP04 Pure Cool to my kitchen, it’s pretty neat, can control from my phone or Alexa. Reports air quality and kicks in for kitchen smells and smoke. Not totally magical though, some smell still drifts upstairs.

I think that Safera Sense on the stove is going to be SO powerful! I'm glad you're interested, as I met the owner at CES this year and he's a great guy!
Regarding the access point on the fridge/// Most solid objects will reflect a portion of wifi signal. Especially big metal insulated boxes, like fridges. Particle board cabinets also add several layers of signal blocking between your access point and the upper floor. While i am sure your wifi works fine, and probably supports your incoming speed just fine, the max theoretical is definitely being affected by the placement of the access point between the fridge, wall and cabinet. max speed between in-network devices would be affected. In my day job, half of my time is spent on consumer wifi troubles.... seeing that just makes my skin crawl. And while I, myself have done things outside of the norm in certain situations.... I would not put it on film.... or at least I would have temporarily moved the access point to better follow wifi best practices during filming.
Ahahahahahhaa, I knew I'd get a few of these. Totally aware and yes it does totally work in that configuration on the fridge. You're the first to say it though! Thanks for sharing it for everyone's benefit!
Yeah I moved mine to the top of the fridge and it scored poor on the WiFi mesh test even though it was closer to the primary router access point. Glad there was a reason. Thanks!
Loving your kitchen. I see you have nest wifi extender set back and the reason why, would you have one in your bedroom? I'm thinking about one for extended wifi upstairs.
You absolutely can Kev. As long as you keep the distance between the device and where you spend significant time over that 1 foot distance, you're definitely good to do so. So don't stick it right next to your head on your nightstand...k?

@@AutomateYourLife Even though Google can see my Smartbot "Coffee" it doesn't see the sensors. Alexa doesn't see any. I've synced and discovered numerous times.
Your camera work is very good, and your presentation is smooth and very informative. Easy to watch and learn. Interesting though, your intro animation says "saves time and money" , and then you list about $1000 worth of electronics you've bought and didn't add up all the time it took to research, buy, install, configure, and tweak all your gadgets to save you that time and money. Not hating, I'm a subscriber.
Ahahhahahaha! Good point! Come watch the other stuff Paul and I'll help you save time and money. I spend on this stuff so you can see the best and levae the rest out.
Ohhhh, ok. So, FCC guidelines (and most countries) around wireless transceivers put you with these frequencies about 1 foot away at least. That's for any extended length of time. It's not that this is a guarantee to be an issue for you, but I would suggest that you just follow that general rule. Stay back at least a foot for your daily living situation.
I wish I could control my Keurig with a smart plug. I tried but my Keurig has an electronic toggle switch on the back and the smart plug won't turn it on.
You must have a very understanding wife. Great setup and I agree about the Nest Hub, best screen on the market. Might have to get the bigger one in the future.
Apart from leak sensor and floor robot i do not see the point in this type of automation - you still have to switch on or off the lights and devices - why not use the supplied switches. Plus all the devices need power so lots of wires and increased cost. Never left a fridge door open by accident and a light on reminds me to switch it off as i go out usually placed near the door.
I don't switch on anything. Motion and contact sensors control all of my lighting, timers and schedules deal with my coffee maker and many appliances. Voice control for things I do on a more random basis. I save power on lighting because at half lumens, you save about 2/3rds. You gotta stick around and watch some other videos. This was made for subs who follow us.
Hey 👋 Brian, can you tell me, does the WiFi setting on your Google home max work with the first generation Google WiFi? Or is it just the generation you have?
I BELIEVE...you can only get that setting stuff with the new Nest WiFi right now. It's still actually in beta but anyone can sign up with that. Have you tried looking up WiFi in the list of additions in the Google Home app though?
@@AutomateYourLife Great kitchen! Anyway, do you have to have google wifi or any wifi to bring up the wifi on the drop down list? I have google home hub (not Max) and no google wifi....I don't see the really neat wifi option
I hate to be that guy, but there is a lot of stuff that could be done with "dumb" things. The oven temperature and humidity thing? I don't understand why that has to be connected and can't be just a thermostat? The flic buttons to control the hue lights? Why not just a lutron light switch on the wall with regular dumb bulbs? Could even have a switch with a motion sensor. I'm not trying to kink shame, but in my opinion there seems to be some rethinking of how stuff works for you to optimize.
No that's fine Ryan. It's not intended to be perfect and the fact is I moved in here about 6 months ago. Still changing and reconfiguring. What's maybe not clear is that the tour is with a ton of devices because I test so many for the channel. I'll be clearer next time! However, I'll give you some examples related to what you said. The Flic buttons can also control my Sonos (I have a few around my home), my Yeelights, my Wyze gear, my SwitchBot, and also can even send webhooks. Hue control is minor, but very nice. There are 3 temperature sensors around the oven because I'm testing them all for a video for protecting seniors and others who need the help. All can be used to trigger different safety mechanisms. The visual one from SwitchBot goes into Smartthings and can be used with notifications from my Sonos speakers, my Hue Go, push notification, and many other methods. Anyways, I hope that explains it a bit for you and gives you an idea of what this is video is about and who it's for.
Oh! Sorry, it's on the about us page (I don't write it in comments because it'll end up with endless spam): ua-cam.com/channels/tRSKEipM17PF7n0mi66btQ.htmlabout
Does Sonos actually support proper Chromecast now? I knew they had the assistant, but I thought Chromecast was still not possible. This is a great walk through of products in a real life situation. I did think maybe the Hand Sanitizer was your favourite item :). Your eating habits look a bit like mine! How do you find IFTTT these days? I just found it a bit unreliable lately. I love SwitchBot. I remember when Paul Hibbert reviewed it. It just made me laugh so much, but they are amazing little products to fill that gap where you need to automate a non-smart device. You lost my respect at comparing good latte's with Starbucks though. I live in Melbourne, Victoria Australia so I guess I have a lot of choice with coffee, but Starbucks holds the bar low here :).
Lol...you've given me pause here. I had a look and the icon is not...what I expect. I'm not sure how I have that icon on Chromecast! I gotta look into it, but I do know the new Ikea Symfonisk Bookshelf Speakers I had went right into the Chromecast list.
Flic is expensive. The difference is some of the very different connections you can make. If you have ST throughout your home, they work great. I've also found my SmartThings button to be very unreliable. One click doesn't seem to work most times and with Flic...it's every time when I have the hub.
@@AutomateYourLife Brian, I had the same issue with the ST buttons which seemed to require a press to "wake" things up followed by another to make it work. Magically, though, about a month ago they started working perfectly the first time every time. I don't know if they were affected by one of the hub firmware upgrades or not, but if you have one around, try it and see if it's working better for you now.
@@HughD Yea the buttons themselves had a firmware update on there micro-controller to keep them awake all the time now. They work pretty much every time now. But have noticed a big hit on the coin battery they use. Seems to use a lot more battery power. Building my own capacitive touch button for this very reason.
@@HATipsByLarry Thanks, Larry, that explains it. I just checked the battery levels in two of my, buttons, and am not seeing anything unusual here. One I've had in service for over six months is still showing 87%, I'm finding the 2450's are pretty good in sensors. I admit, though, my time since the upgrade is very limited. Thanks for the response.
Automate Your Life yeah, I was thinking Having smart lights(or a switch) then a (Wyze) motion sensor then a (Wyze) Door Sensor(Wyze since it’s cheap and easy) so when the door is closed lights are always on, but when the door is open, motion is detected the lights would turn on for 5 min. Have you found a way to view the Smartbot sensors with Google or Alexa? Is the Actiontiles fee once a year or once.
Oh I can ask the temperature (not the humidity) with Google! I believe you can do the same with Alexa, but haven't really paid attention.
Wait, why exactly should you not spend a lot of time really close to a router? (I ask, sitting inches away from a mesh repeater)
Hey Freddie! That's why SwitchBot is so powerful! Those toggle switches are big though, so I know it could be a bit of an issue
I am still looking for a smart portable heater that will respond to voice and not just on and of, but temperature and timer. Cant find one.
Ooooh that's tough. I think the new Dyson integration with Google might. Check our Google video from today!
@@AutomateYourLife I will check but I meant a "reasonable" thing, I dont want to sell my second kidney yet :)
@@philipperostin can't help ya there...kidney it is!
@@AutomateYourLife ha ha ha
You must have a very understanding wife. Great setup and I agree about the Nest Hub, best screen on the market. Might have to get the bigger one in the future.
Aahahhahahahaha! Let's just say she was never in love with all the automating :)
I think I'll make the demo for this! Stay tuned folks.
You very kindly offered to help with my my Melross problem and said to email, but I don't know your address. Sorry.
Oh! Sorry, it's on the about us page (I don't write it in comments because it'll end up with endless spam): ua-cam.com/channels/tRSKEipM17PF7n0mi66btQ.htmlabout
My favourite smart home kitchen appliance is my Sous Vide, you simply can't cook better steak, pork or fish without one....
So gooooooooooood!
Surprised that a metal fridge with insulation does not affect your wifi off that pod.
I haven't found any issues! I've even tried moving it and there hasn't been changes in performance.
@@AutomateYourLife I heard the IKEA Symfonisk Speakers were cast capable.
How are they with sound quality? I've heard mixed reports on that.
They're OK. Not Sonos quality, but close enough that you won't be upset. I liked them...but didn't love them.
Flic seems expensive. Smartthings buttons are about $12, What's the difference?
Flic is expensive. The difference is some of the very different connections you can make. If you have ST throughout your home, they work great.
I've also found my SmartThings button to be very unreliable. One click doesn't seem to work most times and with Flic...it's every time when I have the hub.
Yea, I've had issues with ST buttons also. Maybe I will try Flic. Thanks
Nice
Thanks Mark!
@@AutomateYourLife Amazon has a smart oven that you might want to test out too
Oh man I've wanted one of those for a while!
When blink will finally work with google...
We will have to ask Amazon that one...
DOO BATHROOM!
Bathroom eh? I want to gather a few more things for the bathroom I think!
I’m not too sure as I have no idea how to do it in Alexa Routines, but I could be possibly in IFTT but I’ve never used it!
Automate Your Life Oh and also For the Voice control Rice Cooker, Pressure Cooker, Slow Cooker, what is the voice control able to do? Maybe for a video about a review of it and real world scenarios when using voice commands.
Alexa(or Hey Google), Cook me a meal is closer than I though 😀
