So me saying Sacha should be a utility back is obviously contoversial and I understand why😅. So let me explain my thinking (And please tell me what you think)
Im NOT saying that Sacha isn't a primary 10. That's his best position. What I'm saying is that IF he could also slot in at 15 and 12 then that puts the Springboks in an amazing position in terms of flexibility for selection.
Damian Willemse is (probably) the Springboks' most important player because he's so versatile and it makes the 6-2 not as risky as it normally would be.
Now imagine if we could have 2 of those players on the pitch at the same time. All of a sudden the 7 - 1 becomes even less risky (though it'll still be risky). Your team selections suddenly become a lot more versatile as well. You can now put a winger on the bench because the other positions are covered. If you go for a 5 - 3 then you can add a lot more attacking flair.
Not just the team composition but the actual on field tactics are more versatile as well. If you had a 10 and 15 that could interchange during the match then that adds a whole new level of dynamism. Both your attack and backfield becomes stronger because you have 2 excellent first receivers and fullbacks.
Can't remember who it was but one of the Stormers coaches said that he's really good at fullback. So I don't think it's out of the question.
I think we can all agree that regardless we need another specialist 10 to make the position stronger. But having Sacha be a utility back would only benefit the team in my opinion. His regular position would still be 10 but having the option of moving him if need be or if tactics require it can only be a good thing.

Damian Willemse, willie are also great utility backs, so was frans Steyn. All of them eventually got established at 15 after being played around the pitch. Granted Sacha's ability with the boot. He is a great candidate as future captain. He must settle into a position in the next few years. It should be 10.

@@jacquesverster1473 That's fair. But I struggle to see how Rassie won't utilize his flexibility though. If everyone is healthy then it's awesome and everyone can play in their preferred position. But injuries will always happen.
But yes I agree that he should settle in at 10. It's just never a bad thing that a player can cover multiple positions.

@@thegainline Rassie can utilize his flexibility as a starter too. It's what makes 6-2's and 7-1's work. Remember Willie was the only backline sub in the RWC final. And he was only gonna come on as a fullback.I believe every Bok backline player besides Mapimpi plays multiple positions. Being a specialist '23' should be a way of gradually introducing Sacha into test environment. Pollard needs a successor. Bok fans want a kicking 10 and I believe that is what's coming.

While there's not many obvious prospects for after 2027 at this point in time, I think the Boks will be fine. Thanks to the SA clubs playing up north nowadays, more expat players feel they have a better chance at playing international rugby for South Africa and aren't committing to their countries of residence.

Sacha a utility back? Man thats sad, he is a proper fly-half. I'm afraid I have to disagree with you on this. I see him as having the flair of Libbok but the physicality and kicking of Pollard. Forget about him at FB. I agree that Full back is a concern. Great content, keep it up.

I agree that Sacha's best position is at fly half but... It would be amazing if we had 2 proper utility backs in the team😅.
It would give Rassie such a vast amount of selection options. Is Sacha not good at 15?
I've seen him play there before and he looked quite good.

I know he’s been out injured (at least when it comes to Bok duty) since last year, but not mentioning Lood as one of the stand out locks since the Bakkies/Matfield era.
As for the future of Bok rugby, besides a whole bunch of young guys that will inevitably come through before the 2031 WC cycle, the Springboks generally and Rassie specifically has always had a knack for finding guys in that 25-28 yo bracket that suddenly make themselves known at just the right time. Considering how deep the rugby talent pool runs in this country, I’m sure we’ll be just fine.
I’d also just like to mention great video and I’m really enjoying your content!

Its too early for this much worry thats why you plug in and blood in the youngsters now and measure them against the specialists now sow they know where to get to and understand the systems so its no biggie for the next two years. I like the way Rassie is going about itm widen the pool of players and create depth

Sorry don’t agree, you have to look at SA rugby from school starting at craven week for under 13s. The machine starts before that but starts kicking in then. The quality of rugby played at school level in South Africa is not matched by any other country. Then you move onto club rugby and uni rugby second to none. Then you move onto the big clubs and the elite comps again some of the best teams in the world. There is no issue with talent pool, it is all down to talent development, player management, selection, and most importantly preparation, planning, and execution. And that last 3 is where Rassie & team are impressive. The challenge for SA is who replaces Rassie?

Sasha is not a utility back. The boks are going to use him for utility back Yes.
Sasha is going to play that position until damian is back. I think later the season we will see sasha starting and damian as utility back.
    Slowly working handre out.
Horn or fassi will become our new full back options.

Sacha might have played utility by the Stormers, but his natural position is flyhalf and that's the position he wants to play for club and country. His kicking on Saturday suggests he's got the stones to pull it off. He's the ideal understudy for Pollard and in my opinion would be wasted as a utility player - too much natural talent and too many creative instincts.
I think we should give him a run of games at 10 and see if he can control some games. He'll definitely feature in the first test against the Irish, although I'm still not entirely sure whether he will start. Players sent on for media briefings generally do, but Rassie could be doing this deliberately to fool Farrell and co.

  • @groenrizla2513

Alot of unnecessary worrying 😂 We'll have no problems until after the next RWC and think about it, after the next RWC the young talent currently at Craven week now will be the same age of the young players comming into the Bok squad now like Henco and JH Wessels, then we'll have the kids of the 2007 generation Boks putting their hands up so the conveyer belt doesn't stop and no doubt the clubs are following the next batch of kids very closely.
So to start worrying about future Boks post RWC27 you need to be looking at the next gen Craven week players, that's where our new enforcer locks will probably come from to replace Etzebeth as they'd be around the same age Eben was when he started playing for the Boks.
I think there's any gaps and when it comes to the front row they always tend to be older as they seem to peak later.
And Mngomezulu not being a flyhalf? You going to get alot of stick about that.

      I wish I had your confidence😅
And with Sacha I agree that he is best at 10 buttttt IF he can play at 15 as well (or 12) then we will be in a very good position in terms of flexibility.
      Thanks for your thoughts😁

@@thegainline Yes I think we have less worries than many other countries do and hey SA love their utility players, we won the RWC with them and it enabled the Boks to put on a 7/1 split, something few other squads could do.
I think by RWC27 we'll be talking about the next young bunch comming through the ranks like we are now about Hanekom, Sacha, Henco, Wessels, Elrigh, Roos etc Rassie says they follow the progress of 98 players so let's see... I do think the next Eben is on the horizon though.

Overall, I think we are in a very healthy position, it would be hard to imagine how we could actually be in a better position, so I think we should be very happy at the moment. That being said, I actually think our profile is a little older than you do. I think we need a big rebuild before the next WC, not after it. I would like it if the next 3 years can be spent giving a lot of new caps and giving younger guys time to train and play with the older guys in our setup, I think that would set us up nicely for the future. Of the positions you mentioned, I'm not too worried about 10 actually, I think we are quite strong there. We still have Pollard for the next WC and then behind him we have Manie, Masuku and Willemse, and then the youth options, we have SFM and Hendrikse. I actually disagree about SFM, I don't think he is our utility option. I think Willemse is more that. SFM is a baller and prefers 10 so I think he will be the starting 10 for us for years. Sure he can cover other positions, but like with Pollard who can cover 12, I don't think we will move SFM around and will just let him settle at 10. Also, in the centres, I think we are alright. At 12 we have Hooker, who I think will be the guy to be the long term option there, we have Hendrikse, Willemse and SFM who can cover. At 13, we have Henco Van Wyk and Canan Moodie and then Hartzenburg and Simelane who can stake a claim over the next few years. The position I am worried about is at lock. We don't seem to be seeing young guys really banging on the door.
