(April 2023!) Enjoyed the relaxing nature walk so much! I’ve become interested in dyeing yarn (inspired by your successes 😊) and have been watching videos and reading a book on natural dyeing… Mushrooms and lichen! And, isn’t it fascinating that avocado pits and skin make a lovely pink? I look forward to trying it. (Now, back to the future… 😜) 🐳💦
Strawberry DNA Experiment 🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓 You need: - 2 decent sized strawberries (bigger is better!) from the fridge so they're cold - 1 tbsp isopropyl alcohol (otherwise known as surgical spirit! You can get it from a pharmacy for under £2) - Muslin/cheesecloth or similar filtering material - A narrow-ish glass - Some washing up liquid - A pinch of salt Put the isopropyl alcohol in the freezer (you can stick the whole bottle in) for 30 minutes before you start. Put the 2 strawberries in a ziplock bag, seal it, mash the strawberries really well with your hands. Add about 1 tbsp water, a dash of salt and a small squirt of washing up liquid. Close the bag and gently smush the contents together for about 1 minute (try not to make a load of bubbles). Put the muslin over the cup and pour the bag contents into the muslin and let it filter into the cup (this can take up to 15 minutes) Once there is at least half a tbsp of liquid in the cup (more is better) discard the fruit and the muslin Hold the cup at an angle and slowly pour 1 tbsp of the cold isopropyl alcohol down the side of the cup so it forms a layer on top of the fruit liquid. Set the cup on the table and watch what happens between the clear alcohol layer and the fruit layer. You should notice a white-ish "slime" forming between the layers. You can dip in a toothpick and gather up this "slime" - it's actually DNA from the strawberries! The soap/salt mixture breaks open the cells of the strawberries alowing the DNA to escape and the isopropyl alcohol makes the DNA precipitate out of the fruit liquid. Strawberries work really well for this because they have 8 copies of each chromosome (octoploid). Humans have 2 copies of each chromosome, one from each biological parent (diploid). 🍓
Sending good thoughts and prayers for Dan to land a job he likes!! Sorry the girls are out of school again. You are all doing a wonderful job of getting back into the swing of things. Lilia is very talented!! Hoping you all stay well. Take care!!💕🧶🧶💕
Sending you all positive and healthy thoughts! The constant rollercoaster is what makes things difficult for everyone, I think. I’m being very, very careful with my exposure to others because my 96-year-old father (who still lives alone in his own apartment) can call at any time that he needs me to come over to help with something. I doubt if there is anyone in the world who has been able to remain uneffected by this virus. We’re all in this together! Dan, you have “Dan Fans” around the world cheering and hoping the very best for you with your job hunt. It will hapoen . . . the perfect job! Salam wa sa’aadah.
Ali,,,So sorry about lockdown again and no school for 2 weeks!! You guys are so Busy! Numbers are up here,,,,and lucky we are in the country,,, Not going out much ,either,,,Just shopping and home!!! Thanks so much,,Loved it all!! Elaine🏡🏡🏡
Just wanted to say thanks for the Oat Biscuit recommendation! Whipped them up in less than 1/2 hour! Had to substitute some of the ingredients as I didn't have them all in stock (normal flour instead of wholemeal, honey instead of syrup, and I think my baking powder is out of date but oh well!). They still tasted fab though, it's going in my recipe folder. Thanks!
Lovely to see you and as always you make the best of things with a bit of added sparkle thrown in. Hope the job news for Dan is a positive response 👍🏻❤️🙂
Well done Dan sending more Prayers 🙏🙏🙏 from Australia 🇦🇺 for the next stage. I am not a religious nut either just a good catholic girl who believes in the power of pray so Dan 👍
The jazzy festive music is marvelous and you heath-bound mushroom hunters are fabulous! Thank you for taking us with you. Not many mushrooms are here in Irvine, California (between Los Angeles and San Diego - dry autumn but the beach is nearby so that's nice and watery :)). I can't remember, have you read Erin Morgenstern's book, The Starless Sea? I am working on my Strictly socks and will post a picture of their golden goodness in Instagram and Ravelry soon. I send every good wish to you all.
Thanks Diana! 🎶 No I haven’t read that but I’ve just looked it up and it looks so good! I’ve added it to my wish list 📚 Thanks for the recommendation 😘
Here in Minnesota we have gone into lock down also ... eeeeek!! We just celebrated my grandson’s 10 th birthday. They came to lunch and we had a banana split.
Oh what a lovely surprise this unexpected vlog was! I am in awe at how organised you all are, and at how cheerful you remain despite having to isolate. Thank you for sharing your family doings with us, and everything crossed for Dan’s second interview . Whoopeeee so happy you are doing Vlogmass xxx
What a lovely surprise to see your vlog in my in box this morning, the perfect pick me up for a rainy Friday... hope your all doing okay still? It's such strange times. Fingers crossed for Dans second interview, sending all positive vibes. 💕and 🤗xx
When we go hiking I usually take a bag along for trash. Fingers-crossed for Dan!!! I think we all have spots in our homes that are neglected, hey that's better than the kids going hungry! haha Lillia did beautifully on the flute and the painting! YaY! for vlogmas!!!!!!

Great to see you all! Keeping fingers crossed for Dan’s 2nd interview. Looking forward to his good news. 🤞🏽 We’re in lockdown in California too. So you’re not alone in that. Stay safe & healthy. See you again soon. ~Colleen
It made me so happy to see the science experiment! This vlog has really uplifted me from a rather crummy day. As another said, fingers and toes crossed for Dan! 🤞
Your vlogs are always entertaining, good variety of content, funny, good music selections. You are inspirational(i think i will makes those slipper socks, and learn to knit and make oatmeal cookies) Funny about the unplanned stockpile of oatmeal. But it is a good food to have on hand. Use it in bread(i have a great pumpkin bread recipe that uses oatmeal) cookies (of course) bars and cake, crumb topping on apple crisp, granola, filler in meatloaf and meatballs and just for breakfast. And, I am just a bit jealous of how clean your fireplace is. I have crud all over the floor, dust, soot; it's a never ending battle.
Take care in this unexpected isolation. And I really hope Dan will get the job. Hahaha never seen the DNA of a strawberry...😂🤣 We have watched ‘Jingle jangle’ too, it was a nice movie.
We did it as a hands-on activity for a university function and the kids loved it but also the adults thought it was so neat! Many of them asked to keep the DNA in a little microtube. 😆
Sorry the girls have to isolate, but best to stay safe. The 2 weeks will whizz by. Good luck for Dan's second interview. Is that gingko leaves I spotted in your garden? A beautiful tree with prehistoric roots!
Yes apparently so! I only know that as soon many people mentioned it last time 😅 They’re a pretty colour but the trees are ginormous 🙈 They’re from next door’s trees 🌲
My granddaughter’s birthday is also on Nov 30.. she is also on homeschool for two weeks because my son her Dad a ER doc has covid.. he is doing fine and feeling better.. she will be 9.. I am hoping to see her on her birthday if her mom and her don’t get covid..I haven’t seen them in months as my son is aware he was at a greater risk to get covid And didn’t want to expose us.. Love your life and crafty videos! Best to your family.. we will all get thru this covid someday ..
Ali, I love every minute you share with us. We are still mostly isolating. I drove my car for the first time since March to shop for the stocking stuffers before the holiday madness ramps up. Those ginkgo leaves make a lovely color for eco printing and leaf rubbings. Your vlogs with all the blathering and rambling bring warmth and comfort.
Here in Philadelphia the school district has decided to keep them at home until January. My thoughts this school year they won’t be returning to their schools. I get it but with everyone being in the house sometimes I just wanna hide but they have discovered my hiding spot so I can’t pretend I’m doing laundry in the basement anymore.. lol
“Tirrebly wonderful little drop “ Hey ho isolation your working from home machine kicked into gear without a hitch I hope all remain fit & free of Covid The girls made an effort on garden clearing well done them Oh to have a wood burner 🥴 envious but no chimney or outside vents in my home See you soon 💖💖💖💙
Here in my town in Oregon, the children never went back to school. Hopefully spring brings better things.😁 I'm so excited for vlogmas. Happy early birthday greetings to Phoebe!🎁
Here in the Midwest we are going through the same thing. Most of the neighborhood is in lockdown. Our teachers are feeling it, my granddaughter has been tested 3x already and negative.
Lovely to spend some more time with you and the family, Ali. Hope the next few days don't prove too difficult wih the home schooling and everything. xx
I am from America and my grandson has been doing his school at on the internet. Some kids were going 2 days a week but now our city has closed the schools until the first of the year . So everyone is going to be on the internet
Lovely to see you! I stopped half way through to get an order in for badges! Feel really sorry for our young people during this pandemic. One of our Grandsons was sent home from school for the same reasons as the girls and it is so disruptive for them. You all seem to cope admirably though! Take care all of you and see you for Vlogmas xxx
I have everything crossed for Dan I have had one son off self isolating for a week than two boys the second week and now one goes back Monday and the other has to stay home for another week. Hope your all ok! roll on Christmas I say (after birthdays of course) xx
Always nice to see you, but sorry for your current circumstances. Hopefully all will be well and situations will improve soon! Thanksgiving will be very different for us without friends and family this year. Looking forward to Vlogmas! Blessings from Arizona. :-)
Oooooo so excited this video is here . Gotta now get my housework finished quicker so I can sit and relax and watch . Btw you have hardly any padding on that certain area lol x
Sorry y'all are stuck home again. My brother teaches and expects daily they will close soon. Are you sure you don't own that cat by now? Thanks for all the vlogs and the crafty ones too. Stay safe.
What is your museum’s you tube channel? would love to watch it....I have enjoyed going online since I can’t visit museums because of the need to also be in lockdown in my State......
Also hate spending money. Would steam clean carpet to get it right properly worn out. How about using car as alone space for everyone in rotation. Really thought you would be homeschooling much sooner... In illinois we are on stay home or it will be lockdown.fine by me

Lovely to see you all. My daughter is an English teacher and is having to self-isolate for two weeks, frustrating isn't it? Keep safe 🍂🍁
Oh no! I hope she’s ok, yes very frustrating but at least it’s only two weeks 😅😘
Were the dandelion coasters part of a kit? I’d love to make one for myself. I love dandelions. 💛

I thought if you were self isolating you were not supposed to leave your house. Have I got that wrong?
If someone in your house had symptoms nobody can leave the house (except for essential shopping), but if you’ve got someone isolating because they were in a bubble (or possibly could have been) with someone who tested positive then only they need to remain indoors, the rest of the household can carry on as normal unless someone in the household develops symptoms. Those are Ginkgo Tree leaves!!!! THOSE are insane rules!!! The two of you were no where near any other people 😡
