Just love these videos Saskia. Foraging is definitely one of my favorite activities - there's so much free food out at the moment (still winter here). I put all the hay from the piggies cages on my garden as mulch. I give them oaten hay (and ryegrass) every day and the seeds sprout once they are in the garden and there is some rain. I am now picking big bunches of beautiful, lush oaten grass and the piggies just love it. It's such a joy just listening to them all munch contentedly. Happy times.

Do you live in an Area that has Council owned gardens? I live in Queensland country town and I know 1 of the gardeners on the council. So I can pick weeds from the park gardens and even the local council office gardens. My friend gives me time to pick the weeds and then the gardening team will dig out any weeds I haven't picked. I also have a couple of friends who own Local businesses and I can go and pick grass and weeds from their gardens and lawn.

Around here people use a LOT of ornamental sweet potato vine because it grows like mad. The leaves are edible and my wheeker loves it. A popular plant combo or border pairing is the fountain grass in back with the sweet potato vine in front. Easy way to landscape guinea pig food, ha.

Tip to all piggy owners , get yourself some seed trays , put some compost in about 1 inch , cover in grass seed , sprinkle some compost on top , water , and wait for luscious new grass to grow .
When grass is 2 inch high, present the tray to your piggies, they will love you , when they have finished a tray , put back’ out to grow or in conservatory . Rotate trays (3) and you will have all year fresh grass for your little ones.

They do love wheatgrass and it grows fast indoors BUT BEWARE. I fed it to my pigs for months and it was not good! I forget exactly what it was but I stopped all of it right away. It could have caused sludge in the urine which leads to bladder stones and that is something to watch for. As pigs get older, they can't handle exotic feedstuff as well as the young can. Strawberry Clover was another very bad one for sludge and stone formation. Learn from my mistakes, it'll save you heartache and money!

I have an agreement with my pet free neighbours to pick dandelion and plantain from their lawns, plantain makes a great poltise for humans too. Once chewed apply to insect bites or stings a great natural anti inflammatory. My girls are huge forage fans and wheak whenever anyone comes through the front door in the hopes they have some. I'm so thankful to have found her! New piggy mom here and so much to learn!! It's winter here and wondering if I can feed them the mint I've grown outside? It's dead but I didn't cut it down so not sure if it's still good for them

Really interesting, especially because i've never heard of many of these! Luckily, we can grow different things through spring, summer and autumn. Palm kool is a favourite, a little bitter but tasty with potato. Herbs, lettuce and cauliflower are great too. Herbs and fresh grass we also feed to our rabbit.
Really great video, thanks for sharing 🌻🐹🌾

Hi Saskia,🥰 my husband and I just finished watching your video. Thank you so very much, for sharing all you do. We follow your page and watch every video you post. Still we would love to talk to you in person, so many questions... 🤔🤔 it would be a very long post. Our year and a half old Piggy (Earnest T.) was acting out of sorts, we took him to a vet. I just don't feel he knows about Piggy's like you do. He got a clean bill of health, and gave us some antibiotics just in case. I'm unsure about giving it to him. Just so hard to explain in writing. Thank you again for all you do. Tracy and Jeff

Convinced my neighbor to let a patch of piggy safe weeds grow in his yard bc my yard gets treated. The city gave us a fine apparently they didn't share in my excitement over a patch of weeds lol. Its been all good sense I put deco gravel around it like its a special flower bed

Hi Saskia, I absolutely love watching you work with these lil guys:) You are so gifted, in all that you do with them. I believe that you are bringing out their true beauty & personality. & also showing people what they can have with just a little gentle loving kindness.
I must mention, before I go... You probably already know this, but. Feeding rice can become dangerous, when the animal then drinks water. The rice swells & can burst. It's become illegal now in CA. to throw rice at weddings because of this... I feel very awkward mentioning this, as knowledgeable as you are... But I thought, just in case:) Thanx.

I live in west michigan in the city. But my apartments are off the road by a creek. You would think that we live out in the country side with all the dear and small animals around. But we get a ton of wild black raspberries and I just cannot bring myself to eat them. I am afraid bugs/mites may be on them or birds may have pooped on them. The animals eat the ones on the outside but they can't get in where most if them are because of the thorns. So they just bloom and die every year.

Saskia. Thank you for this. I a.m. enjoying researching everything for my first piggy. You, Scott and skinny pig 1 have really opened my eyes about issues with care, feeding, energy levels, and even the sizes of herds and the c&c layouts. I would like your thoughts on using colloidal silver. I use it on my cat's. Also, I would to make an observation pertaining to your spinach. Very few things do well growing in the acid soil next to a pine tree and yet look sick in normal soil-- my conclusion would be that your spinach plant needs acid soil to grow Just like blueberry bushes. Please let me know if you read this, I have an idea for free helpers/ gardeners you may not have thought to check into.

Oh wow that is very interesting. It would explain why I cannot get the spinach to grow that well! Colloidal Silver - yes I am all for it! Would love to hear your idea.

@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue Thank you for getting back with me, I a.m. hoping that this isn't something you have checked.
      1) I learned about plants in the Master Gardener program. It is offered thru the county extension service. They beautify street intersections, roads, etc. They have to maintain the certification by working so many VOLUNTEER hours yearly. Because yours is a nonprofit, you might be able to get free landscape or Guinea garden area as well as them maintaining it. They also host plant sales and could possibly have one on your property. You would have more foot traffic and I a.m. sure the write up in paper would bring free publicity. I am sure there are more ideas that you might see that I don't.
      2) I know several public/private high schools that require the kids to complete volunteer civic duty to pass to the next year. My daughter spent 1 Saturday per month helping fill boxes to be picked up by needy families. Some kids volunteered at stables, local dog and cat rescues - the purpose is to help the teens to feel as part of the community and learn empathy. I also have seen catholic kids join together as groups to help in community. The leader brings them in and stays with them to keep them on point. I remember a time when my daughter was barely a teen and she joined in to help weatherize homes for senior citizens. I know of atleast 2 large Baptist churches that also help in our community. It absolutely never hurts to ask or send letters of Introduction to ask if they such programs. Check with your city, find out how to be included in free events like earth day celebrations. Our local girl scouts have sign ups, vendors have tables at them. Why couldn't you have a furry friend table to introduce the rescue to people that might not have known otherwise. Tip jars at the events don't hurt, either.

@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue my volunteer hours were usually accomplished by driving the visitors at the botanical gardens on a golf cart, some people worked on model trains or lighted Christmas decorations (galaxy of lights). One lady worked with a daycare to decorate pots and grow plants for holiday presents. They approved most everything for MG hours but it really is up to the local county extension service or person running it. Growing up, I always loved participating in the 4H. Does 4H consider showing prize piggies as a contest? My friend in Ohio runs a skunk rescue and they hold skunk fest yearly. Maybe you could hold a piggie pageant? I hope these are fresh ideas to you.

Hi Saskia. I don't know if we have plants of the same names here in Australia. One thing I was wondering, we have alot of Nut Grass in our lawn...is that safe for them to eat? Also dandelions. Any info you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Heather
