Cheers & all the best for 23 mate.
Wow... amazing..new subscriber here
Cheers for that mate. Hope to have another update on the yard coming this weekend.
Have a top one.
We use to have guinea pigs and they loved eating the extra greens.
They loved to hoe through all the lettuce we had that went to seed Rob. Not too fussed on the amaranth though.
Cheers mate.
Happy holidays Man and family 👍💪
Thanks Julian.
i hope you & yours had a top one.
Hello Rob Bob! Nice quick update that is full of inspiration. I like your tip to use calcium hydroxide to address the brown leaf tips. What would you find as a well balanced approach for adding nutrients to a brand new chop-n-flip? Thank you!
The hydroxide I primarily add for pH adjustment with the calcium component just being a side benefit Seymour.
I would add in a general nutrient tonic such as a seaweed/kelp additive to help with any deficiencies.
One thing I would suggest is that you don't fully plant out the bed to begin with. Just a few leafy greens or herbs then add more as the fish start to produce more waste.
Hope that helps some.
Excellent. Been curious about guinea pigs for backyard meat production for a long time but am still in the city so balcony garden and indoor aquaponics will have to do. Research indicates rabbit and quail are easier to prepare though.
Quail grow a lot faster as well. The down side is that the males can be loud & they do generate quite a bit of waste you need to compost.
@@RobsAquaponics there are some interesting stacked cages for quail that use conveyors to help manage waste. Some conveyors mount a roll of heavy brown paper on the side and the sheet underneath so you can pull through a fresh sheet and compost the used sheet with the waste. I bet you could fill a tray under a wire cage with those wood based cat litter pellets and it could balance nitrogen and carbon pretty nicely in a small surface area material for convenient, fast composting.
hi rob watch the water temp of the ginea pig water supply the sun will cook it
Thanks mate. We have 2 bottles, one on either side so there's always one in the shade. 👍
Loving the idea of a guinea pig tractor for lawn mowing. 😂 Do you put them inside something at night, to prevent predation? I am intrigued!
That cage is predator proof & is wired on the base to exclude the pythons we get here as well. 👍👍

Cheers Ramone. 👍👍👍
Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday from the US!
Thanks Ken. I hope you had a top one mate. 👍
Hi Rob,
Not sure if you are aware but guinea pigs shouldn't have wiring on the bottom of their cages as it is uncomfortable for them and they have sensitive feet and can cause infections and such. As a guinea pig owner I just wanted to share this information with you. Apart from that I enjoy watching your content.
Hi Sarina. The wire is there for their safety due to the carpet pythons & other snakes we get regularly through our yard.

Cheers & have a top one.
Are you sure the calcium hydroxide works? CH is barely soluble in water, solubility is less the 2g/liter. I was going to use in my system but I'm in doubt now, I might try the eggshell+vinager to make the calcium acetate but im not sure if that is OK for the fish as well... Have you ever used Calcium Acetate? Great content. Best regards
I've been using it for over 10 years & it always fixes any issues I've had.
Ca(OH)₂ is use predominantly to adjust pH, not for the calcium, that's just a bit of a bonus.
I haven't made or used the acetate but probably should just to see how it goes.
Cheers & have a top one Gustavo.
get 2 chickens they will strip it bare in a weekend
These are "rescue" animals so decided we needed to put them to work. They may go back to their previous owner if they find a suitable residence.
What about Calcium Chloride?
What do you think adding protein skimmer in aquaponic system?
I haven't found I needed to include one Shane. The solids all move through to the solids settler for removal to the mineraliser when it's cleaned. I know commercial farms will sometimes include them though but I think it could be a bit of overkill for backyard systems.
Cheers mate.
Guinea pigs for fun or eating?
Yes!
🤔 I promised the lad we got these from that they will just be lawnmowers.....
Their progeny, if we get females, might make it to the menu.
can I use calcium chloride into water?
For what purpose mate, to prevent nitrite poisoning (brown blood disease)? I wouldn't recommend it as it's caustic & exothermic when it comes in contact with water.
I think you're better off sticking with other forms of calcium & chloride. 👍
ED to add, Potassium chloride would be a better form to add it if you're worried about sodium levels.
@@RobsAquaponics yes for too much nitrite and fungus? but not too much. it is fine?
@@ThePentavia I think you'd be better off using the potassium chloride.
@@RobsAquaponics Thank you mate. i got catfish in my pond. but my plants was to slow to grow
