  • I originally purchased this unit to have an example of Atlas imported Roco units for my Atlas N scale buyer's guide. I picked it up off of eBay, paid a little more than I think it should have been but it was by far the cheapest one on there at the time. Let's get it on the workbench and see what we've got.

Thank you! Some videos are definitely more helpful than others depending on how far I have to go to get something running. Glad you enjoyed this one!

I do own a 1975 Gp-30 Atlas/Rico in the Chessie System paint…Yes, I did work on my to get it running… The Santa Fe Gp-9 is very similar to the Gp-30… They need a lot of power to run… I did put a light bulb in my…. I run it from black wire to the frame… Right now, I pair my with a CSX life like Gp-38… They both run well together…. They both can pull 20 cars maximum….I also bought a another Atlas/Roco parts locomotive on Ebay…. It for keep the other locomotive running..If you need a wheel for you Gp-9… I be glad to spare one for you…

Thanks Bryan. I think this one is good to go-ish. It's not something i'm going to be running on my layout. I had originally bought it just to show it in another video. lol.

Use kapton tape to prevent the frame parts from coming together, and cut the 'long' pin to the right length.

Your struggle to remove the shell takes me back 52 years to the first time. I did it on an identical unit to strip the shell and repaint it SP&S. That yellow paint is THICK. Mine was used too and cost me $ 5 Considering I was earning $ 1.25 an hour then, that was my monthly train budget.😂. W Alsdorf

Hey William. I have found that a lot of the very early stuff is difficult to disassemble and reassemble. Bachmann comes to mind. Their metal geared units were great. but taking them apart and having to get that stack of plastic shims back in there JUST right was a monumental pain.

You MUST remove the worm gear covers and worm gears if you're going to mess with the motor...and LUBRICATE the worms...the worms and bearings should lift right out. Makes installation of the dog bones a breeze!

Yeah I should have just taken the worm gear cover off. It's not dissimilar to the old Life-Like units in that regard.

I bought one today for under $40. We will see how it does. I won’t have any issues tearing it all the way down now that you were the Guinea pig. Clean the contacts, ultrasonic everything and grease the gears. Might even put some lighter wires and fix the headlight mount. Get yourself a selection of copper or brass shim. .001-.003 is handy. I will figure out how to add a decoder or put it in a dummy behind

Thanks Jim. That's why I do these videos. To give you guys some info rather than diving in blind. Let me know how your refurb goes.

Pop the black gear retainer off the worm and slide it all back together easy peasy

    Cool tinkering.

Also these are notorious for axle shrink causing the wheels to spin on the axle. A little super glue can fix that

Interesting. I knew the Roco E7 had worms that pivoted with the trucks, so I was expecting something similar here. This looks quite a lot like a metal-framed equivalent of a Mehano mechanism.

Maybe the Austrians and the Yugoslavians were sharing ideas.

@@Trains-With-Shane I wouldn't really say that (though *later* Roco and Mehano collaborated on some models for Con-Cor). Most mechanism design ideas recur across multiple brands.

Stop beating yourself up !! If you're going to work on n-scale locomotives, you shouldn't let the various 'difficulties' create frustration, All the older locos have their own little quirks, just looking for you to find the solutions. I get great enjoyment out of solving the insane number of problems that can arise while improving the performance on a non functioning, or poorly functioning locomotive. Enjoy the 'journey' and the results.

You need to disconnect the handrails from the the cab first.

Kapton tape is used on locomotive work.

I've used kapton tape often in working with laptops and other electronics. I didn't see any in this unit that I recall. Although it may have disappeared a long time ago given the age of this unit. Bachmann's earliest N scale diesels used little stiff plastic shims to isolate. An even more frustrating pain in the butt than this setup.

It was most difficult and cruel cure of a patient ! But why didn`t you clean and lubricate all gears and bearings? It won`t work correct with dust and hair !
