As someone who has finished Pac-Man 2 at least once, I can assure you that no matter how bad you think it looks, playing it feels _even worse._ It is an adventure game in which the main character is a separate entity from the player, with their own POV, emotions and reactions, priorities, etc. Now, this isn't necessarily a recipe for disaster. Look at, say, Lifeline on the PS2, in which you remotely control a character by giving her voice commands. (Also, ignore the fact that the game's voice recognition isn't very good. Just hear me out for a second here.) She has her own goals (which happen to line up with those of the actual player-character, a civilian locked in a security station), voices her opinions and feelings when given commands that she doesn't necessarily agree with, and occasionally refuses to listen outright. Aside from Lifeline allowing for much more specific guidance, the key difference between Lifeline and Pac-Man 2 is that the controlled character in Lifeline _doesn't just stop fucking listening to you if she doesn't feel like it._ When you tell her to look under a dresser, it doesn't matter how low her health is, or if she just saw a monster fucking kill someone, or if she just barely escaped death herself thanks to your timely intervention; she will look under the damn dresser and find whatever health-restore item or collectible is underneath. In contrast, if Pac-Man is in a negative mood, he will actively ignore your Look commands and slingshot strikes. If you trip on that rock at a bad time and he gets angry, he will not listen when you tell him to look up at the skateboard that is rapidly falling in his direction, and it will knock him out, costing both him and you whatever progress you've made since your last checkpoint. This can be extended to any game in which you control a character indirectly. Even Hey You Pikachu doesn't punish _you_ because _Pikachu_ did something wrong of its own volition. TLDR: Pac-Man 2 is a second-person-perspective game in which you give orders to something close to an actual person, rather than a loyal artificial intelligence that occasionally shows signs of independent thought, and the problem is that actual people generally don't follow every random impulse they get from voices in their head, let alone voices that aren't their own.

This is the first video game I ever beat, at the age of four. I got it as a Christmas present along with Dynamite Headdy. I was too stupid to get past the first few levels in Dynamite Headdy (I beat it about a decade later), but I was just stupid enough to understand Pac-Man 2.

controls on the slingshot can be a bit sensitive and some parts like the mine and hanglider minigames can be frustrating. i played this game a lot as a kid and i really enjoyed it, i can see past those problems and my frustration is subjective anyway. holds up pretty good for its age in my opinion.
As Joel said, this would have probably been better for PC than console, because with a PC, you could always just look up guides or instructions, and yes, even in 1991 or whatever year it was released in, not just in contemporary times. Namco is a professional game company, they aren't the type of people who would release a bad game directly under their name and domain. Also, I believe they are based in Japan, so their work ethic is spot on. The problem with this game is just direction. They tried to utilize a new and innovative concept but because of their lack of experience with it ended up making it very direction based, without any concrete instruction. Joel has chat, but think about some kid in the 90's who played this. They would be constantly cross referencing the game with the manual but since games were cheaper to rent, appealing to most people, they usually did not come with a manual. If the directions weren't directly in the game, how would one know they had to make pacman feel a certain way or to do something *very* specific? How would you be able to utilize what the game provides if you didn't know it was there to begin with? Pacman 2 has the time and quality put into it, it just doesn't present it in a very appealing way, especially when the target audience are kids, not adults.
The Pac-Man 2 episode of GCCX has one of my favorite moments: When Pac-Man hits the "pans" at the ghosts' names, it reveals the number 415. 415 as *goroawase* means *Yoiko,* Arino's comedic duo with Masaru Hamaguchi.

The moment I saw this in my recommended Joel brought memories of a game I thought I would never see mentioned again in my life and I've never clicked faster on a video. This game reminds me of a Super Famicom game that is Pinocchio themed and it's about you raising a robot to be, like, an upstanding citizen and love and be athletic. there is a sequel too and both have been fan translated to English. Most of the game is spent trying to get the robot child to read and not eat baseballs. It's called Wonder Project J. I thought it was fun.
Ever since you've mentioned this game, it's been sitting at the back of my mind for YEARS. -There was this recent indie game about a Robot-Doll Girl with the same premise of "Going through life", & it gave me flashbacks to the game(s) you've just mentioned. As Joel said, this would have probably been better for PC than console, because with a PC, you could always just look up guides or instructions, and yes, even in 1991 or whatever year it was released in, not just in contemporary times. Namco is a professional game company, they aren't the type of people who would release a bad game directly under their name and domain. Also, I believe they are based in Japan, so their work ethic is spot on. The problem with this game is just direction. They tried to utilize a new and innovative concept but because of their lack of experience with it ended up making it very direction based, without any concrete instruction. Joel has chat, but think about some kid in the 90's who played this. They would be constantly cross referencing the game with the manual but since games were cheaper to rent, appealing to most people, they usually did not come with a manual. If the directions weren't directly in the game, how would one know they had to make pacman feel a certain way or to do something *very* specific? How would you be able to utilize what the game provides if you didn't know it was there to begin with? Pacman 2 has the time and quality put into it, it just doesn't present it in a very appealing way, especially when the target audience are kids, not adults.
I remember getting it for cheap years ago just because I knew about the "secret" Pacman port inside the cartridge. Good stuff.

The music timings and Pac-Man's voices on SNES version is a reason why I like the MD version: Doesn't sound better, but at the same time, is stable and zero *reverb diarrhea.*
There are a few spots here where the sound isn't reverbed though, like the part of town where the Hot Dog stand is.

In all seriousness though, this game is a guilty pleasure of mine. The gameplay is horrible, but the graphics are very nice, the music is quite catchy, and Pac-Man's expressions are just begging to become a meme.
I honestly don't think the gameplay is that bad once you know what to do. I honestly consider it a hidden gem on the SNES.

The Ghostbusters MIDI part made me want a second Ghostbusters album.
This game reminds me of a Super Famicom game that is Pinocchio themed and it's about you raising a robot to be, like, an upstanding citizen and love and be athletic. there is a sequel too and both have been fan translated to English. Most of the game is spent trying to get the robot child to read and not eat baseballs. It's called Wonder Project J. I thought it was fun.
