  • Welcome to our PU surfboard wave pool test!
With so much chatter around EPS and epoxy boards in wave pools, we thought it’d be great to grab a few of our favourite PU surfboards to put in the water at URBNSURF to see how they go…
We were lucky enough to grab two great C.I surfboards straight off the rock at Onboard Store in Mona Vale Sydney - that was the Happy Everyday and the Bobby Quad:
Channel Islands Happy Everyday - www.onboardstore.com.au/surfb...
Created by Britt Merrick from what was initially the Two Happy performance shortboard model, CI's new Happy Everyday fills a need in every surfer's quiver: the everyday shortboard.
Coming off the heels of CI's Pro Team loving the Two Happy, Britt wanted to draft off its performance attributes but modify it to address the everyday conditions most of us come up against. The kind of conditions where you want to rip and aren't feeling the groveler vibes, and at the same time maybe not quite the epic stuff you would use your high performance shortboard for. To achieve this goal, Britt shortened the rail to create a curvier outline, especially through the tail area. For both the entry and exit rockers he lowered them to increase paddle and planing speeds to cover a broader range of conditions. The single concave under the front foot acts as a gas pedal and generous double concave through the fins provides rail-to-rail ease and plenty of lift in the small stuff.
The CI Pro Team has been loving it, and the design was further validated in the recent Stab in the Dark that featured Taj Burrow in West Oz - not only for the way it looked under his feet but the fact he chose to paddle out on as the wildcard for WSL's Rottnest Islands event.
The Happy Everyday is a great all-around design that sits right between your high performance shortboard (Two Happy) and a step down/groveler (Rocket Wide).
In short, a board designed for high performance surfing on the majority of waves the majority of us surf every day, the Happy Everyday.
Channel Islands Bobby Quad - www.onboardstore.com.au/surfb...
If you're after a speedy, playful, short-railed board that stays loose yet crisp in the pocket on smaller, weaker days then look no further than the new Bobby Quad.
Santa Barbara's Bobby Martinez challenged CI to build him as short of a board as possible with the goal of maximizing his fun in tiny summer surf.
By shortening the rail line and distributing the volume into the width throughout the plan shape, Bobby is able to skate over the flats and carry enough speed on this four-finned design to still fit in his signature turns. Bobby's dimensions landed at 5'2 x 19 x 2 5/16, quite a step down from his 5'8 standard shortboards.
The Bobby Quad is designed to be ridden 3" to 6" shorter and 1/4" to 1/2" wider than your shortboard.
    Tyler Warren Zipper - heartofglassbyronbay.com.au/c...
This board Tyler desighned with Midget Smith in 2006. The original was a diamond tail thruster. A fishy outline allowing for effortless speed and drive. This board can also be ridden as a quad, bonzer or single fin.
This review was a great chance to check out the new Blackstix 4.0 by Futures Fins - futuresfins.com.au/pages/blac...
Futures Blackstix fins feature a V2 inside foil that generates and maintains speed throughout turns. The precision carbon and fiberglass matrix construction paired with specialised epoxy resin provides a very lightweight fin with incredible response, making your board feel livelier.
    V2 Foil
    SPEED GENERATING
Future’s revolution in fin and foil design. The inside surface of the fin is concave at the base and transitions to a flat surface at the tip of the fin, improving how water flows across fin. The V2 foil creates an effortless feeling rail-to-rail so you can keep speed while setting up big maneuvers down the line, even when the waves you’re surfing lack power.
Thanks for checking out the review, and thanks to URBNSURF for having us, it really was a blast!

love my bobby quad...fast, groveley, accelerates out of turns , and can hold in bigger surf. The tail is something special.
I would recommend with the parallel outline and forward volume not to go too long, or else there will be a front-to-rear imbalance in the board causing the rear to sink. Sinking the rear half of the board causes the buoyant front end to come up out of the water losing drive.
I would stick to the 6" off your normal shortboard or size it from a chin to nose height. Going a bit thicker first, and secondly a tad wider to get your volume. It's a slightly thinned out board overall. So, a touch thicker for starters.

      Hey, thanks for sharing!
Yes, my previous one was custom adding width and thickness, and had I had time to order one, I’d likely do the same again ✌️

Great review! Thanks for doing these. Just picked up a Bobby Quad in XTR 10 construction. Excited to see how it goes.

Epic! You can’t really get that in Australia, but I’d be frothing to check it out!

Thought the BQ was an average board until I tried it with H4 fins. Game changer!

      @TheSurfboardGuide  7 місяців тому

Ah, I don’t think it needs the H4’s or a speed generating fin, but it doesn’t hurt!

The Bobby Quad looks the best of the three under Craig's feet

Yeah it felt good, but the Zipper was the one that suprised me. It felt good through turns, and watching the footage I really liked how looked in the water.

32 litres looks way to low for you. Jordy is lighter at around 90kg and surfs 33-34 in average waves. Why do you think 32 is your volume? I'd love to see some comparisons in the pool where you try the same board in different sizes and volumes. Some more foam in the same boards around 35-36 litres would give your surfing much more flow.

How tall is Jordy? I’m 5’10 1/2. I think height also plays a part in volume and distribution of volume.

How do you reckon the bobby quad would go with the new futures Flow Quad fins?

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  6 місяців тому

Don’t know… I prefer a more classic-upright fin, so I don’t think they’d really be my go. But if you wanna cruise and draw longer lines, then maybe they’d be good!

Is the Tyler warren more of a good wave twinnie or a groveler?

You're shorter than the 5'10 board Craig. You look spot on with that 5'8. So I would think you're over shooting your height. I'm 5'11, around your size and I'm 110kegs. No stress bro, nothing wrong with being a big boy, your still out there doing your thing!
