True comprehension involves interacting with the text and actively constructing meaning from it. And often, the meaning that an individual makes will be profoundly personal.
While reading, listening or viewing, we dissect and reconstruct plots and storylines. We make predictions and ask questions. We personalize and adopt experiences as if they were our own. We visualize and create mental images. We look for symbolism and make connections with other stories that we know. We judge protagonists and evaluate their decisions. We identify with characters and form bonds with them. We put ourselves into the narrative. And we find our own stories within it.
There is never just one story. We may read the same book, watch the same film, or listen to the same podcast. But the meaning that each of us creates will be remarkably different.
By asking questions like the ones suggested above, we can encourage students to go deeper into the story.

Excellent video. The convergent questions are ones that I would have posed before reading, for skimming/scanning, but the divergent questions are absolutely not what I would have expected in a language lesson - that's inspired me with some ideas. I'll be implementing that kind of idea soon!

I've never thought about comprehension questions from such a perspective. It was refreshing, thank you!

Thank you Tamara. Yeah - I think it's fair to say that we regard comprehension and understanding as being the same thing. Glad you like it.
