Toby A Ik. Everyone thinks that it is the kids being taught that genders are a certain way, but it is the personality of the characters. In my opinion, they shouldn't have used Barbie and Ken, and instead maybe pictures of men and women or dolls that aren't as popular.
Then all parents must be forced to change gender roles so we can break this gender oppression! Men need to start wearing dresses and women must start dieing at work 90 to 1.
Newbskin there’s a reason why men do certain jobs and women do certain jobs were not gonna try to change basic biology just to make kids feel both man and women do the same
true, but it is surprising that the supposed female roles is playing in their head, this was what it was when... the 50's, 70's... this isn't now, so what is making them think that?
The media. Everything from movies to TV and advertising. Girls are supposed to be beautiful, wear make up, and appeal to men where men are supposed to be strong and muscular. People who advertise the make up and clothes we buy are usually digitally altered to be the most appealing wearing certain clothes so we buy them. Movies sometimes have a "damsel in distress". Usually hero movies, the movie often finds their true love near the middle of the movie and the romanced couple play their counter parts throughout until the end. e.x.: Hero trains, finds a damsel in distress, she becomes a major part of the plot, and in the ending after the hero succeeds their destiny, they fall in love or get married and live the rest of their lives. Other plots that are less romantic usually involve the female role to be a sidekick to the main character. In TV, women are rarely portrayed without make up or fashionable clothes.
@@santismith5286 By asking if boys wear dresses, you are asking the kids to make an observation to the current state of the world, which doesn't say much about the psychology behind the answer. Phrasing it as "should" or "can" would allow for more thought process to be included in the kids answers
This is unfair. They didnt get the option of both, so if you had to choose one it would be the more stereotypical gender. Of course kindergarteners will say boys don't wear dresses, that's all they know. It's better to do this experiment with higher grade levels that know better. Btw I like your background music choice
Is barbie still even going on? I never heard much about it in school and the only person who I knew liked it was my older cousin. I thought it had pretty much died out :p.
both the kindergarteners and third graders were answering based on their home-life situations, friend groups, and self identity at the time, having them point at a doll is a difficult way to justify their thoughts beliefs on gender roles at their age. Maybe try the experiment again by asking other or more questions starting with, "Could a boy...?" or, "Could a girl...?"
Also, by using Barbie and Ken, they're using not just generic basic dolls, but ones that have character and known likes and dislikes. It's well known that Barbie loves shopping, and likes to cook, and Ken is very often shown as being athletic and playing sports. The question about hair length was worded a bit odd, maybe "can girls have short hair" would be better. As well as the dress question, instead of do boys, can boys wear dresses would have likely gotten better results. They may not know any boys that wear dresses, so they don't know if they do or not, but that doesn't mean they can't wear them.
Why couldn't you just ask the kids what they think of men and women, not dolls? These dolls are characters that have a lot of things built up around them. Their marketing heavily relies of gender roles and stereotypes, so what a child thinks about the dolls isn't going to necessarily be an accurate way to gauge what they think gender roles are.
Totally. For example, when they asked which doll is stronger my thoughts were "well, I'd like to say Barbie could be as strong, but because the doll itself has much thinner arms, and much thinner everywhere that should have muscle, there's anatomically no way for that particular doll to be stronger"
well it was surprising when people said barbie didn't work bc she's had millions of jobs.Sure she isn't the best body positive doll but she isa good role model for young girls. She shows they can do anything
the purple cheescake zebra ya both in generaly should both work together and the guy wearing a dress thats your choice but tbh its weird and the sports could be for both the guy just looked more fit this wasnt fair
How is it that nobody chose Barbie for "Which doll goes to work?" Barbie has like a thousand jobs. She's a movie star, a fashion model, an animal doctor, a teacher, a chef, an astronaut, a hotel manager, a ballerina, a cowgirl, a scuba diver, a toilet plumber, a scientist, a princess, a superhero, a shopkeeper, a toymaker, a stripper, a zookeeper, a DJ, a waitress, a video game designer, an accountant, a construction worker, a cartoonist, a surfer, a musician, a clown, a wrestler, a soccer player, an undertaker, a blue collar cubicle worker, a babysitter, a religious leader, an elf for Santa Claus, a professional nose picker, a janitor, a cashier, a knight, a businesswoman, a firefighter, a super villain, a butler, an acrobat, a slave, a slave owner, a lawyer, a news reporter, a police officer, a dancer, a sensei, an artist, a game show host, a maid, a drug dealer, a taxi driver, and a president. Ken is just a fat, lazy slob who sits on the couch all day drinks beer, eats nachos, scratches his butt, watches TV, and acts like a lazy idiot.
In my primary school whenever a teacher needed something moved they would say "I need four strong BOYS to help." Even if a girl stands up they would only pick boys.
It also pisses me off when they do boys vs girls or girls in one line boys in the other, etc. It really hurt confused me. I was and still am always forced into the girl roll, and it's not good for those struggling with gender identity. Besides this, I also feel like it's little things like this that keep the world from changing into accepting non conforming genders and things like that. I know someone is gonna come here and tell me that the world isn't ready for this or it doesn't matter, but to me Saying things line he/her or she/him is annoying. They exists for a reason, and it should be used in that way. Gender reveal parties are horrible. I'd have no problem with it if it was SEX reveal and it didn't enforce stereotypes, but no. Sorting kids, or people in general, into the boy group or the girl group is horrible. Stop saying "This goes for boys and girls," or, "Girls and boys/ Ladies and gentlemen." This continues to enforce the idea that there are only two genders. There are other ways fo get a group if peoples attention, like the word everyone. Or, in some cases you don't have to say that at all. Instead of someone at a show saying ladies and gentlemen, they can just say welcome. Again, I know most people aren't going to understand this and will feel like I'm being too pushy and annoying, that I'm getting annoyed by things like this. Some people will think that it just doesn't matter. But to me, little things like this is NORMALIZING the multiple genders. Which is what should already be done. Sorry for the rant. I just wish the world would change.
Omg I absolutely hated when teachers would do that cause every time I raised my hand to help then would just brush right passed me, like yeah I might be short but I’m strong enough and it just really makes me upset thinking about how people always stereotype things
I just got my hair in a pixie cut and I didn't notice this before I saw the video but lots of people think girls should have long hair!!! It upsets me that so many people believe this!
You guys had the most sterotypical looking dolls EVER. It wasn't possible to find a male and female doll wearing the same/close clothing to each other?
Julia Ratliff Even if they changed the dolls out the children would more than likely still choose the answers as in the videos. The children are influenced more by their parents,if they had only 1 parent the children would most likely choose the same doll for each question. Also at a young age they are prone to see females behaving a certain way and males behaving a certain way hence why the female roles were on barbie and males onto ken. If they asked at a date where the children were teenagers/older the children would say both more as they would know women and men both can do the same things.
I didn't find the answers that the kids gave surprising, but it kind of hit me hard, you know? could the answers probably be influenced by the fact that the barbie doll was actually wearing a dress?
even the fact that the interviewer was saying "which one" like there was only one option instead of both. some of the kids did say both, but they did have to think about it.
I feel like it would be better if they just asked boy/girl/both instead. Im sure the answers would still be kinda sad to see, but I think they would be at least a bit better
Well, scientifically men are stronger than women probably from evolution and all that, so I feel like asking which is stronger may not be a good question for asking about gender stereotypes, but I don't know I haven't done proper research and am not in Sociology so....
Elani Scott but women can have period pains equal to the pain of giving birth (my mother said she'd rather have cramps as opposed to labor contractions) and don't complain about it but if you kick a guy below the belt its "worse than labor". Personally both sexes are strong, but strong is about more than lifting things, its physical and mental and emotional. Guys are faced with expectations like "your a boy you dont cry". But both have to be equally as strong. Like a woman giving birth when every midwife would say "oh and by the way, you're gonna die" but some lived, that's strong.
This experiment didn't use the best examples because barbie and ken are known characters that have defined personalities. So some kids could have been giving their answers based off of that, especially the kindergarteners. Maybe you should have used lesser known dolls. I'd also like to add that the younger kids probably based their answers off of their parents.
xXMarillXx Blue But you don't know which job the child is thinking of. And Barbie has a show and she doesn't have a job there which could have also influenced their answers. I didn't say this but I think the younger kids based their answers off of their parents.
SAMEE. As someone who is viewed as female, I do not act female, but if I was viewed as a male, I would die my hair pink, wear pink clothes, some makeup (although generally as a person I don't like makeup) I'd also wear nail polish, necklaces, allsorts, it's hard to explain why I would do this xD
I think gender stereotypes are downright idiotic. I play basketball, but I hate going shopping and I hate pink. People call me a "tomboy" because of this. I'm a girl. A boy is a boy. What the hell is a tomboy/tomgirl? Who made up these foolish words?
well, you cant expect people to know every single girls in this world's personality rite, thats why people usually stereotypes, and a tomboys are girls who behaves like most boys
Honestly, if I was my younger self, and they asked the questions like "which one plays sports", I'd just look at the Barbie's dress and think *okay, so she's wearing a dress that looks extremely hard to play sports in, so it's only reasonable that the other doll plays them.* Like, I think I'd look at the dolls rather than the expectations for girls and boys in general.
Eren Bombastic I agree but in third grade I would have questioned the question! "why is that even a question, why would boys wear dresses!?" =P I was an air head as a child tbh
also, in the show 'barbie life in the dreamhouse'. barbie has, like, 300 jobs (was a president before), is displayed as a a shopinatic and a fashion superhero. so thats understandable. but i understand what youre saying, that shows do IMPLY gender roles. idk what im trying to say anyways
digitalatbest 。 true, because my dad cooks a lot but my mom doesn't. I would have chosen the Ken doll when I was younger, these kids might have mom's that cook or just in cartoons a lot of the mothers cook dinner
Ha lol i have short hair as well. I used to have long hair hen i got it cut to a bob and when it was a bob and i was in the womans bathrrom a little girl came up to me and asked why i was in womans bathroom I replied with.. becaus eimma girl lol then I grew it out then got my hair cut to a pixe cut :3
"Do boys ware dresses" me: have you seen anime? Or any comedic show/movie? "Do girls have long hair or short hair" me: OK NOW THAT WAS A STUPID QUESTION!!!!! LOOK AT YOUR CLASSMATES!!!!!
I'd be like: BARBIE'S KNOWN FOR SHOPPING BOI HAVE YOU SEEN THE BARBIE MOVIES, SHE HAS A THOUSAND JOBS I WATCH ANIME SO BOYS CAN WEAR DRESSES IF THEY WANT TO OR NOT either hairstyle works
Trash I personally don't think they were having trans etc people in mind?? It is usually seen as "unmanly" for a man to wear a dress and/or wear makeup and so that would be a gender role and therefor in my opinion the question is just as valid as the others. However if you see it differently I respect your opinion.
well, they don't need to. You don't need to be one of the above to be cooking as a man or doing sports as a girl. Maybe except for the dress thing, then nothing was very controversial. If they would have asked "which doll likes boys" then I would have got it cause no one had mentioned that to me when I was little but I was aware of the gender roles.
hoping my younger brothers won't agree with stereotypical gender roles, though I doubt they will. one time they glanced at my nail polish and asked me to do their nails to match and they loved it
If she did it with pictures of a girl and a boy it would have worked better especially because Barbie can be known for her particularly girly personality also if they used pictures the kids wouldn't know what kind of life they have
A kid in my orchestra class asked our teacher, "Can a boy wear a black dress to the concert?" Our teacher replied, "One year a boy did wear a black dress to a concert. I didn't care as long as the dress was black. No one noticed because he was in the back with the basses."
I definitely know some women who deadlift and squat heavier than some men. Yes, biology makes the vast majority of men physically stronger than the vast majority of women; what does it matter unless you're a lumberjack or something?
Lola Cate lol exactly. unless a woman works out to the extreme and is a body builder and is ripped. men naturally are stronger. they get stronger and form stronger mucles when they go through puberty. women, not so much or maybe not at all
Yes for example my mother birthed me right? So she has been alive longer than me and she works out and works and has pretty much been conditioned to lift heavy right? And when I was 13 I remember asking her for help lifting heavy stuff and all this other shit but then I hit puberty and I never worked out ran nor lifted to be stronger yet once I hit puberty I was significantly stronger than her and now she was the one asking me for help and shit, so yes! Males are naturally significantly stronger than females. There is no denying and unless a female dedicates her life to lift and be a power lifter she won't be as strong as men and even those women are easily matched by men who just started working out and lifting.
their probably just going off what they see at home not saying that a girl can't wear a suit or have a job or replay sports or men can't wear dresses or go shopping, I'm just saying, a lot of kids are not exposed to that. and this is proof of that. pleasedonthateme
RainbowSmash im a 4th grader id be like. Person "Can boys where dresses?" Me " uhmm how is that a question. Duh of course where the law where boys can wear dressed. Nowhere"
Notice that the guys answered less stereotypically than the girls. I honestly didn't expect that, but at least we can say that their parents did a good job raising their boys not to be "go make me a sandwich" boys. I'd be proud if I were their parents. Even though it's not that big a deal, it's progress. Our generation's youth aren't seeing much more than the stereotypes though so we can't blame the ones who went with the obvious gender role answers.
Kenya Jewelz I feel like if they interviewed, say, 7th graders, their answers would be a lot less stereotypical, because they've had time to learn and understand these things. For example, those kids probably don't know about LGBT, and would probably be really confused if they found out, but older kids would know about it and would have already formed an opinion, and it would hopefully be positive.
I don't like that there are people who hate on girls who like wearing pink or wearing makeup or cooking/cleaning. gender stereotypes alone are not bad. gender stereotypes do not equal being sexist. if you are using these stereotypes to discriminate THEN that is sexist. but it is not a bad thing if someone does/does not fit into these stereotypes necessarily
Maddie okay oml yes I have a friend who likes sewing but she's annoyed at herself for liking it because it means shes 'perpetuating the stereotype' but really what's wrong with being a stereotype? Just like what you want :)
In my opinion, I think the choices are based off of the child's family. Being influenced by their parent's actions and chores that they do, I think they interpreted that by the dolls. Another one is that Barbie and Ken are iconic dolls, so the younger kids choose by Barbie and Ken's traits
we did one of these when I was in year six. my teacher put out a Barbie, and a ken doll, she then said "which one is stronger? the man, or the woman?" so I said "well, it depends what physical state they're in, I'm not gonna stereotype them. And who's to say that they aren't transgender?" then my teacher turned to the TA and said "this experiment is useless"
This is honestly kinda sad... I can't believe up to now kids think of gender roles like this... Personally, I don't think we should label people "girly" or "tomboy" or "manly" or etc, because that would mean that there are still stereotypes.
+cheyhippy GT Simple, you're you! Don't worry if you fit more than one stereotype. That's good! After all, I like TMNT, Cars, Blue, Green and Video games. "Boys stuff". But I also like Barbie movies, painting my nails, lipstick, and purple. "Girls stuff". But I like reading, math, science too. "Nerds stuff". And I like swimming, running, and even Tae Kwon Do. "Athlete's stuff". If you don't belong to one stereotype, it means you're just yourself!
Sam I think you should teach a boy how to sew because if he ever needs to do a quick fix it job on the hem of his suit jacket or do a quick pin in the back of his pants he won't be lost paying money for a quick fix or asking mommy to do everything. My brother knows how to alternate his suits himself if they are too long or whatever it maybe. Also teaching your son to cook ,wash his clothes and iron them is vital. Unless you want him always ordering take out or having dirty and wrinkled clothes. They both need to learn to fend for themselves .Lastly if your daughter wants to work let her work. Yes it says husbands should be the "main" breadwinners but that doesn't mean she can't get a part time to have her own money to get the things she wants or to treat herself . Shoot in this economy all habds on deck .Both should cook, clean, and share the responsibilities of rearing the Children . just my thoughts as I'm going through UA-cam. I was never one for dresses I couldn't wait to throw it off And put on comfy clothes.
My parents didn't want to know what sex I had before I was born, so they always asked the doctor if one could see anything and if you could, they didn't look. Then they bought a bunch of green and yellow stuff
"Why do you act so girly Sometimes?' Act like...? "You look like a boy though..." Look like...? "Are you a girl or a boy?" I am what and how I feel like being :3 Can be girly to some and manly to others! "Yeah but like... If you could only choose one?" Then I wouldn't be me.
Spiritofthewolf1103 In that way I am a boy. But many say I act like a stereo typical girl. People even accused me of being gay. I dont think being homosexual is wrong but it feels bad when people keep throwing it in my face when it's not true. I don't think a penis or vagina matters as long as the person can be happy being the way they want. :)
Stereotypes are based on facts... Yes, some women are stronger, yes some men like to go shopping, yes some men wear dresses but the majority is not like this. Also, most boys and girls in kindergarten see girls with long hair (who are also in kindergarten) and don’t see many with short unless some close relative or friend or person they see a lot has short hair. Of course as they live longer, they’ll see more, they’ll understand better, they’ll learn.
There is absolutely nothing "repulsive" about it, Roger - A dress is just a piece of freaking *cloth*... Clothing isn't capable of being "repulsive". ...However, small-minded people with bigoted views definitely *are* repulsive...
It would really renew my faith in humanity if you lowered your standards for human children. They have not been exposed to breaking gender roles, don't expect them to whip out a whole SJW slam poem on why men can wear dresses.
I think it would've been a better experiment if you had Kindergarten, Third grade and sixth/seventh grade. Tween and Teens have different opinions and if anyone watches the show, Brain Games there was one episode where the host asked a group of teens if they would swim in shark infested water. The teens didn't reply with No immediately like the younger group and adult group. They thought about the question and didn't give a definite answer. I think you would have more variety in your answers.
Everyone is making a big deal about "Do boys wear dresses? or can girls have short hair." GUYS! These are just children, in general they probably have never seen a man/boy wear a dress before so you really can't blame them for saying no. Including, girls having short hair(it's not a bad thing) but they probably aren't in an environment or classroom where there is a girl with short hair. You all keep commenting saying that this gender roles stuff is dumb and not thought out but truly you guys would probably answer the same if you were in their shoes or their age. And don't say no you won't, because that's false. (When you're older that when you see things differently and can actually think for yourself.) These kids were raised to think this way and this is what they're surrounded by. REMEMBER their still children and haven't really taken any part of how society is now with all this equality boys and girls can do the same stuff crap. Once their older they probably will have a different perspective on these type of things.
I feel like gender roles aren't bad if the woman makes this decision. If the woman is forced into gender roles than that's fucked to up. As a little girl I was told to dress in pink and wear bows by the other little girls. I didn't and they said" why not". I didn't care. That dosen't make it bad. Some peoples opinions see different and sometimes women come out stronger and sometimes boys come out stronger. If you are gay or lesbian that dosen't mean someone should shit on you for it. People are born different. When a women decides to shop, she shops if a man wants to shop he shops. Sometimes there are stay at home dads. These kids are taught there parents opinions, most taught that gender roles are good. That may be their reason for the answer. But that isn't bad.
Sarah Rasel What about men? We always consider them as privileged gender but are they? Playing sports, working, cutting hair short are OK in most areas for women but for a man wearing dresses, staying at home, living off his wife wealth considered vain or even taboo.
but wait this isn't fair. Ken and Barbie are like the definition of gender roles. couldn't they have found other dolls that don't already have a character or personality
I have short hair and this made me really sad that some kids at this age haven't been able to see all the different types of people there are so I'm afraid that there going to grow up thinking that boys play the sports and girls only have long hair and we all had short hair as baby's, that counts
First of all kids think this is the real world because they used Barbie and ken and they could have just based them on their parents and they most likely don't think that boys don't ware dresses because most likely none of the boys that they've seen don't ware dresses because they just think that dresses are girls clothing and what they've been told by
Everyone can wear what they want. Just to clarify, I'm not saying to rebel against ur parents/guardian I'm just saying that you be you, and don't ever think that ur not good enough because I have gone through rough things and it may not be the same as you but ending ur life is not the answer and I've tried To end my life, and its hard. Even if u might not have anyone to talk to just try crying, I know it sounds weird but crying actually helps because it lets you cry out all ur feeling and it kinda helps you sleep. (It helps me, I'm not saying it will help u I'm just suggesting)
by using barbies, which have been advertised using traditional gender roles of course results would be stereotypical. this experiment is basically botched tbh
This is stupid. Women can do the same thing as men. Everyone should be treated the same whether someone is gay/lesbian or straight or bi, or whether someone is black, white or in between. It doesn't matter. Women are just as important as men. Just to clarify I am not saying Women are better/more important then men. I just believe in equality and that if u think that's wrong to think then that's ur opinion and its ur choice to make. I'm just saying that Everyone Matters!
No, don't get me wrong I'm not saying it's not possible for a straight male to wear a dress. But i'm saying that for the most part straight males would not wear a dress.
Marrow yeah, it sucks too. I teach my small nieces to be open minded at everything. I'm trans too, female to male, nice to see someone like me (just the opposite) out there ^^
I agree. I'm also transgender (agender) but I generally dress feminine and I'm often mistaken for a girl. Some day I hope to raise my kids to be open minded and teach them that the things you like or wear don't define your gender :)
i don't believe in gender roles but i am 11. i don't wear dreses or skirts i think that gender roles are stupid but thats probably becuse my parents are divorced and my mom deos the things that men have to do like repairing the funiture and ''manly'' stuff in the house
But sometimes its weird. people think I'm a girly girl cause my parents/family buy me pink clothing when I tell them I HATEEEEEE pink but they don't understand.
//Daisy Plays Msp// just think in the past pink was originally a manly color and wasnt popular with women. i know that doesn't help you now but if you do prefer masculine clothing and colors you can just remind yourself that it was once a thing all men would be wearing.
"Which goes to work" Barbie she's had like 300 jobs
So also plays like 70 sports
are there even that many sports? I know you are exagerating but think about it. Are there even 70 sports???
+Blue Jeans there are probably more than 70 sports but she seems to play a lot of them
Blue Jeans Figure skating, roller skating, swimming, soccer, basketball, softball, football, baseball, cricket, hockey, (different dance styles count too)samba, ballet, hip hop, tap, horse riding, boxing, kung fu, tae kwon do, karate, belly dancing, running, synchronized swimming, jumping, gymnastics, rythmic gymnastics, etc.

Lol xD
Hey another kid said both we have to give him credit
RealActual CAT Meow ikr so true
Hahah
the kindergarteners just infer from their home situation, you can tell
yeah and normally its stay at home moms when kids just entered school and by grade 3 they might both work and thats why the answer was both for some.
Elley Henderson EXACTLY they weren't taught that genders were a certain way they were shown by seeing their mom cook and dad work
Elley Henderson That is very true
Also later on is when some parents get divorced, then they might have to both work, cook, etc, so that's why the 3rd graders may have said both
That's why one of the boys was saying 'dad cooks, dad cleans, dad works' most likely because they're divorced and he lives with his dad 5/7 days.
I asked my little sister (6) and for most she said either "neither they're royalty they have servants for that" or "both have you seen how well they're dressed" and I thought I should tell yall tha
sarah-soz lol
sarah-soz that's awesome
She is hilarious
Ikr there wearing dresses
@cookie cookie tv my six-year-old sis would say that
Which doll is stronger
Me: *Attemps to break both dolls*
Did you just read my mind?
I would be like neither... they're both plastic...
Crystal Rose lol
Ali The Hufflepuff well Barbie has noodle arms and ken doesn't so I'm gonna go with ken
Gamster Nah Barbies Stronger she goes on a ton of adventures... according to the movies ive seen my sister watch xD
edit: all of the spelling errors sorry i just woke up from a nap...
Wait...Isn't barbie and ken the definition of gender roles?
India lovespugs pretty much
India lovespugs not really. Barbie goes out a works and does everything while Ken is a trophy boyfriend. (that's how her stories are at least)
Again, am I the only one that thinks "flamboyance" when I see a ken doll?
Nahhhhhhhhhhh. Barbie has like a million jobs, and generally, her movies are solved by herself and other women.
Pie God yeah same
maybe the fact Barbie and Ken are characters from a tv show and in the show theres those stereotypes?
Toby A I love your profile picture :)
Amber Shoffren thanks :3
Toby A THANK YOU OMG. I wish they used pieces of paper that said girl/woman and boy/man instead of the dolls.
Toby A I love your pfp
Toby A Ik. Everyone thinks that it is the kids being taught that genders are a certain way, but it is the personality of the characters. In my opinion, they shouldn't have used Barbie and Ken, and instead maybe pictures of men and women or dolls that aren't as popular.
The kids answers are most likely based off of what their parents do
Regan M. Bingo
Yeah...
Then all parents must be forced to change gender roles so we can break this gender oppression! Men need to start wearing dresses and women must start dieing at work 90 to 1.
My parents are split up an my mom works
Newbskin there’s a reason why men do certain jobs and women do certain jobs were not gonna try to change basic biology just to make kids feel both man and women do the same
"which one likes to go shopping" by the looks of it, the man doll has way flashier clothing than the woman

Mayan Bagels yep

I think this is a bad example. Using dolls that are known to have personalities was not a way to go, maybe use dolls that aren't as common
to be fair barbie has played sports and done jobs. and It can all come down to what their parents do and what they watch
Finders Keepers very true but I feel like some of them don't keep up with Barbie so they wouldn't know that
true, but it is surprising that the supposed female roles is playing in their head, this was what it was when... the 50's, 70's... this isn't now, so what is making them think that?

Carrot Stick barbie(the girl) literally has done everything including going to the moon so
I think the "do boys wear dresses" question was phrased improperly - rather, it should have been, "can boys wear dresses?"
What do you mean anyone can do whatever they want but boys just normally dont wear dresses
Should would be even better
@@santismith5286 that's the point,
That’s what I said!
@@santismith5286 By asking if boys wear dresses, you are asking the kids to make an observation to the current state of the world, which doesn't say much about the psychology behind the answer. Phrasing it as "should" or "can" would allow for more thought process to be included in the kids answers
"which one likes to go shopping"
Barbie is known for going shopping

This is unfair. They didnt get the option of both, so if you had to choose one it would be the more stereotypical gender. Of course kindergarteners will say boys don't wear dresses, that's all they know. It's better to do this experiment with higher grade levels that know better. Btw I like your background music choice
Avery Jett it's better to FUCKING EDUCATE kids that this is wrong!!!
This is carried throughout life. Adults have the ability to give the better sounding, more PC answer, but still hold the same beliefs as children
Avery Jett they could say both if they really wanted
Avery Jett cuz they don’t know about drag queens
Avery Jett some of them said both😒
I feel like the kids were basing their answers on the actual Barbie and Ken, not females and males in general.
juliannacsmith no because barbie actually has many jobs and she does play sports she never does laundry
or their own parents
but barbie has 734623 jobs
Is barbie still even going on? I never heard much about it in school and the only person who I knew liked it was my older cousin. I thought it had pretty much died out :p.
IKR
both the kindergarteners and third graders were answering based on their home-life situations, friend groups, and self identity at the time, having them point at a doll is a difficult way to justify their thoughts beliefs on gender roles at their age. Maybe try the experiment again by asking other or more questions starting with, "Could a boy...?" or, "Could a girl...?"
... what?
Not to mention "do boys wear dresses?" while holding up a Barbie in a dress and a Ken doll in a tux.
TRUE
I agree
the male doll looks stronger and more athletic because of gthe design of the dolls so it would scew the results allot
100% my thoughts
the purple cheescake zebra ya both in generaly should both work together and the guy wearing a dress thats your choice but tbh its weird and the sports could be for both the guy just looked more fit this wasnt fair
But barbie has like 100 careers
**Girl with short hair says that girls have long hair** how ironic is that?
not
Mysterious Flower I know it's a joke

Hin Hin Ikr I was like Hahahaha lol
Wait, which one had short hair? O.o

In my primary school whenever a teacher needed something moved they would say "I need four strong BOYS to help." Even if a girl stands up they would only pick boys.
ikr? I hate it! I mean, I usually don't stand up to help because I just am to lazy to move, but I hate when they say "I need four strong boys"
In my school girls aren't punished but boys are
And if a girl does something wrong they say "you're a girl! Atleast take that in consideration!"
@@AreeeAsh i wanna got to your school
It also pisses me off when they do boys vs girls or girls in one line boys in the other, etc.
It really hurt confused me. I was and still am always forced into the girl roll, and it's not good for those struggling with gender identity. Besides this, I also feel like it's little things like this that keep the world from changing into accepting non conforming genders and things like that.
I know someone is gonna come here and tell me that the world isn't ready for this or it doesn't matter, but to me
Saying things line he/her or she/him is annoying.

"Do boys wear dresses?"
They can if they want too
Correct Answers in order: Both, both, both, both, both, both, both, they can, both.
Em Meif'wa what if Barbie doesn't like to shop :/
• Taylor Nicole • watch the Barbie show...
You're Nurse Men are naturally stronger than women.. just look at barbie, she's stick thin.
Em Meif'wa true that

You guys had the most sterotypical looking dolls EVER. It wasn't possible to find a male and female doll wearing the same/close clothing to each other?
Julia Ratliff Non barbie dolls, especially. Everyone knows who Barbie and Ken are.
It was supposed to be a prince and princess...-_-

I didn't find the answers that the kids gave surprising, but it kind of hit me hard, you know? could the answers probably be influenced by the fact that the barbie doll was actually wearing a dress?
even the fact that the interviewer was saying "which one" like there was only one option instead of both. some of the kids did say both, but they did have to think about it.
Hayley VandeBerg true.
And most didn't say "both" until the work question came up, which might be because both their parent work
marina good point. everything in their day to day lives contributes.
Elani Scott Oh no, I don't study it, but this is the most bullshit study.
I would ask if she meant physically or phycologically
***** Trueee
Elani Scott I think it may be talking about using a voice but if it's like physically then yeah

Aurora Sparks Barbie has numerous jobs and plays many sports
xXMarillXx Blue But you don't know which job the child is thinking of. And Barbie has a show and she doesn't have a job there which could have also influenced their answers. I didn't say this but I think the younger kids based their answers off of their parents.
Aurora Sparks I understand what you're trying to say, but you should most likely include it in your short paragraph.
xXMarillXx Blue Yea I should, thanks for telling me
sometimes i wish i was a boy just so i could put on a dress, heals, paint my nails and show them people whats up

Ehlahnor
Nothing's wrong with being trans, just saying.
NyanCatzRR tomboy is basically a girl who doesnt do the stereotypically "girly" things and the other way round for a tomgirl, theres your answer
NyanCatzRR actually no nevermind sorry im wrong with that
well, you cant expect people to know every single girls in this world's personality rite, thats why people usually stereotypes, and a tomboys are girls who behaves like most boys
NyanCatzRR i like your comment
Honestly, if I was my younger self, and they asked the questions like "which one plays sports", I'd just look at the Barbie's dress and think *okay, so she's wearing a dress that looks extremely hard to play sports in, so it's only reasonable that the other doll plays them.* Like, I think I'd look at the dolls rather than the expectations for girls and boys in general.
No you wouldn’t
My answers.
Both. Yes they can wear dresses. And both long and short.
Katherine Rodriguez, I have short hair and I'm a female, so yeah.
Eren Bombastic I agree but in third grade I would have questioned the question! "why is that even a question, why would boys wear dresses!?" =P I was an air head as a child tbh
Eren Bombastic yes
Eren Bombastic same
Eren Bombastic no...these children don't just see men walking out and wearing dresses so they don't say, they wear dresses
these answers can also be deprived from personal experiences
also, in the show 'barbie life in the dreamhouse'. barbie has, like, 300 jobs (was a president before), is displayed as a a shopinatic and a fashion superhero. so thats understandable. but i understand what youre saying, that shows do IMPLY gender roles. idk what im trying to say anyways
yes that's what I was waiting to hear thank you thank you
digitalatbest 。 true, because my dad cooks a lot but my mom doesn't. I would have chosen the Ken doll when I was younger, these kids might have mom's that cook or just in cartoons a lot of the mothers cook dinner

"Do boys wear dresses?"
Well, Ken's wearing a suit and Barbie's wearing a dress, what'd you think they were going to say?
Yea, I don't think that is a fair question at all especially since boys don't typically wear dresses unless they are feminine.

Madison Erickson Yeah, Ciel was so cute in dress and pigtails! Nagisa Shiota was also super cute in his skirt and tank top!
"Girls cook dinner"
I'm 16 and never once has my mom cooked dinner, its always my dad who cooks
It's the opposite for me like I've seen my dad cooks only when it comes to chicken and that also hardly
The kids are too young and most won't understand the concept of transgender, drag or crossdressing I think that the dress question is sorta pointless
Maybe its testing their knowledge on history because men used to wear dress like things

If she did it with pictures of a girl and a boy it would have worked better especially because Barbie can be known for her particularly girly personality also if they used pictures the kids wouldn't know what kind of life they have
Exactly. This "study" was almost unbearable
A kid in my orchestra class asked our teacher, "Can a boy wear a black dress to the concert?" Our teacher replied, "One year a boy did wear a black dress to a concert. I didn't care as long as the dress was black. No one noticed because he was in the back with the basses."
And this kids,
Is how parents ruined the world by learning children the wrong thing.
How the hell is this wrong ?The kids base their answer on their caretaker
being physically stronger is not a gender stereotype or misogyny, it's basic biology
THANK YOU
I definitely know some women who deadlift and squat heavier than some men.
I'm strong, but I admit I'm not as strong as a boy.
Which doll is stronger?
Well one is anorexic and one lifes at the gym, so yeah...
Barbie is stronger 10/10
Jassienib... LoL. Even progressives make fun of soy boys.
their probably just going off what they see at home
not saying that a girl can't wear a suit or have a job or replay sports
or men can't wear dresses or go shopping, I'm just saying, a lot of kids are not exposed to that. and this is proof of that.
pleasedonthateme
RainbowSmash Agree.
I think they just decided based on their parents to be honest.
+Natalie Modiano But what does LGBT have to do with this video?
eon star nothing it was just an example
I'm confused how the example helps your point though.
Just like what you want :)
hmmm... in third grade I would have said
"bitch I don't know their life."
And who's to say that they aren't transgender?"
then my teacher turned to the TA and said "this experiment is useless"

glittsy does it matter??
Parody Girl Many females at my school have pixie cuts and neck length hair cuts
Exactly I have short hair too.
MY LEG it does she's making a point that girls don't ONLY have long hair.
This is honestly kinda sad... I can't believe up to now kids think of gender roles like this... Personally, I don't think we should label people "girly" or "tomboy" or "manly" or etc, because that would mean that there are still stereotypes.
Lila Hamato idk who what am I cause I have a boy character but i love being beautiful but I don't like makeup
+Xx BigBoss xX Exactly why it's sad. When I was this young I knew both could do either choice.
I'm so looking forward for having kids which I can raise without these gender roles
Me too and scared
"Why do you act so girly Sometimes?'
Act like...?
"You look like a boy though..."
Look like...?
"Are you a girl or a boy?"
I am what and how I feel like being :3 Can be girly to some and manly to others!
"Yeah but like... If you could only choose one?"
Then I wouldn't be me.
Yas! I am the same! ^_^ I am gender fluid and proud! :D
Hyped Apple You're a pleb lol
flipnotefan fan [Trคƿƿ૯ძ ᔕ૦υl] You're a twelvie lol
Spiritofthewolf1103 In that way I am a boy. But many say I act like a stereo typical girl. People even accused me of being gay. I dont think being homosexual is wrong but it feels bad when people keep throwing it in my face when it's not true. I don't think a penis or vagina matters as long as the person can be happy being the way they want. :)
There are only two genders
Stereotypes are based on facts... Yes, some women are stronger, yes some men like to go shopping, yes some men wear dresses but the majority is not like this. Also, most boys and girls in kindergarten see girls with long hair (who are also in kindergarten) and don’t see many with short unless some close relative or friend or person they see a lot has short hair. Of course as they live longer, they’ll see more, they’ll understand better, they’ll learn.
It would really renew my faith in humanity if just *one* of the kids had said that, "Yes. Boys can wear dresses."
Autumn Phillips why? that is repulsive
There is absolutely nothing "repulsive" about it, Roger - A dress is just a piece of freaking *cloth*...
Clothing isn't capable of being "repulsive".
...However, small-minded people with bigoted views definitely *are* repulsive...
You should take a look in the mirror, Roger...
I really do pity you.
To be fair, she asked DO they wear dresses. Not if they could. Boys for the most part don't.

Everyone is making a big deal about "Do boys wear dresses? or can girls have short hair."
GUYS!
Which will is stronger?
I be like: We talkin' emotional or physical?
Penelope Dreamweaver you didn't understand the comment. She just said do whatever you want. She just used a woman instead of a man.
Sarah Rasel I'm stronger or as strong as most of my guy friends :)
Sarah Rasel Why just women?!
but wait this isn't fair. Ken and Barbie are like the definition of gender roles. couldn't they have found other dolls that don't already have a character or personality
Here is my answer to the questions everything is both but when she says do boys wear dresses 👗 yes they do
Lps Otaku Zara Dashies yeah but your not a second grader
Laine Stultz none of the kids in the video where second graders
DCney close enough
I'd probably just be like "it's a doll so neither"
I have short hair and this made me really sad that some kids at this age haven't been able to see all the different types of people there are so I'm afraid that there going to grow up thinking that boys play the sports and girls only have long hair and we all had short hair as baby's, that counts
Hannah's hangout well they have all the time in the world to see.
"Which UA-cam video has the most background noise?"
First of all kids think this is the real world because they used Barbie and ken and they could have just based them on their parents and they most likely don't think that boys don't ware dresses because most likely none of the boys that they've seen don't ware dresses because they just think that dresses are girls clothing and what they've been told by
Everything is both. Gender Equality, Boy Can Wear Dresses If They Want to. (Something called drag race and trans gender roles)
I personally think a boy that smelled like flowers and wears dresses would be cute :3
I would point to Barbie for all the "which one" questions, because Barbie is literally marketed to be anything she wants to be!

(It helps me, I'm not saying it will help u I'm just suggesting)
by using barbies, which have been advertised using traditional gender roles of course results would be stereotypical. this experiment is basically botched tbh
which one makes the sammich

Joshua Robinson the subway worker

This is stupid. Women can do the same thing as men. Everyone should be treated the same whether someone is gay/lesbian or straight or bi, or whether someone is black, white or in between. It doesn't matter. Women are just as important as men. Just to clarify I am not saying Women are better/more important then men. I just believe in equality and that if u think that's wrong to think then that's ur opinion and its ur choice to make. I'm just saying that Everyone Matters!
Pineapple Savage thank you! Thank you for being rational
Pineapple Savage I agree with most things that you said but women can't the some of the things men do
yeah... but men are usually stronger. Thats just biology

Niki and alex play games likely not should or would
No, don't get me wrong I'm not saying it's not possible for a straight male to wear a dress. But i'm saying that for the most part straight males would not wear a dress.

Wtf thats gay af
My Cousin did too, a while ago. It was really cute
Cool :D
I WAS WAITING FOR THE THIRD GRADERS TO ANSWER THE QUESTION "Do boys wear dresses.",and say "If they are transgender."
The Levitating Cat How would a third grader know about transgender people?
That's not what transgender is so why would they say that?
I hope your being sarcastic
The Levitating Cat I would've said if they want to
why would he need to be transgender to wear dresses
Okay this gets on my nerves.
Girls work too, boys can like to go shopping too, etc..
LpsBeth7 m and my dad go shopping together
okay but by the looks, Barbie really doesn't look as if she's doing sports.
3:58 Most intelligent guy from the group, I say :/
It's sad that kid still today believe in gender roles. me myself being a trans girl
Marrow yeah, it sucks too. I teach my small nieces to be open minded at everything. I'm trans too, female to male, nice to see someone like me (just the opposite) out there ^^
Marrow it's not that they believe in gender roles. They're just answering based on their own home situation and what their parents do.
Logan-berry im nonbinary
Well if you use the stereotypical barbie and ken, the kids will answer with the stereotypical answers.
I'm a tomboy, And if I see a dress I feel like puking. But my mother forces me to keep my long hair -.- it makes me pissed
