I know this video was essentially all equipment driven, one major note is when you see a car at an intersection (you have right away, car has stop sign/right on red) present yourself side to side. Odds are your single headlight is going to blend in with a car way back behind you. If that light starts zigzagging they're not going to pull out in front of you.
I started riding in December and well over half of my 1400 miles have been at night due to how late I get off work, so I'm no expert but personally I think that's great advice that can easily get overlooked

I ride home at midnight every day. You are correct. Any time a vehicle is indicating turning across your path of travel, begin to swerve. A street light is stuck in place so a light moving side to side will draw attention. Stay safe on the road brother.

As a cyclist that had ridden at night several times, I'd recommend getting some of those neon strips that are attached by velcro which you strap on to your legs and arms when cycling. They're compact and can be easily taken off when not needed, plus you can avoid the emergency services worker look. I've also seen guys who ride with AA battery-powered fairy lights on their bodies, that is almost fail proof but absolutely comical to see.

I actually prefer riding late at night. The roads are mostly deserted near where I live, and you can see headlights from much further away in the dark, which gives both cars and bikes a more advanced warning of one another. Specifically, if someone is coming up behind me, it's much easier to notice them out of the corner of my eye in the mirror. Really the only thing I worry about is hitting a deer.

A slightly different take on tinted visors: let me preface this by stating I have *really* good night vision and some over sensitivity to bright lights, but I find a mirrored visor works well for me at night. It cuts headlight glare while still allowing enough light through that I can easily see even where there are no street lights. I'm talking a very light tint, light enough that I still want the drop down sun visor or sunglasses during the day.

Most of my riding is at night due to my work schedule. I find that in busy areas, it helps to stay oriented closer to the center of the road (without riding the line, obviously) and to honk the horn a few times when approaching any kind of intersection. This makes you more noticeable and gives you a little extra room to evade drivers who turn into the street without looking.

Hi vis is most effective during the day, not at night. The term "fluorescent" means it absorbs UV light and re-emits it in the visible spectrum. This is why they appear so bright in sunlight, not just because of the color. Without the UV light from the sun, it's just yellow. Retro-reflective surfaces are probably more effective at night.

Also, I have exactly 91,000 miles on my night rider with six headlights and over 32 tail / running lights, my tips for night rides are DEER WHISTLES, yes they work, I have 16 of them and they work on most dogs cats rodents and moose and Linx and weasels - also more lights the better - always bring rain gear so it doubles as more layers when cold - stand up frequently to keep your legs fresh and use your cruise control to keep your hands fresh - also add more travel to your suspension to absorb the potholes and shit that you may not see, also make sure to counter lean rather than speed lean so that you can react to critters and deer or gravel you may haven’t seen in time……also don’t ride fast in the fog, the deer love fog……also stay hydrated…..it makes you fatigue less and prevents you from sleeping

Despite the fact that it is actually a moving violation in many jurisdictions (which I wish to hell the cops would actually crack down on), a LOT of idiots seem to drive/ride with their brights on in urban areas. (I guess the lights need to be bright when the drivers are decidedly NOT...) Can't do much about it on the bike, but if I'm driving my truck I'll usually give them one warning flash with my own high beams... and if they don't drop theirs, I treat them to a flash from my off-roads. Inside a hundred yards, at night, that's pretty much like looking straight into the sun. I usually watch them in my rearview pulling over to try to let their eyes readjust and wait for the floaty bits to go away! I'm guessing it kinda gets the message across, loud and clear. I know... vindictive and a little bit dangerous... but at my age, I've just plain run out of patience with stupid, rude, incompetent drivers who should never have been given a license in the first place.

I love my transition visor for my Shoei RF-1200. Solves my tint during the day and clear at night. As someone who can't do sunglasses as I wear prescription glasses, it's a great plus.

I bicycle commuted for 10 years so I have no shame in wearing a reflective vest. Reflective stuff is the most visible thing you can get. I bought reflective tape that matches my bike, it's barely visible in the daylight but pops a lot at night.

reflective stickers helps as well esp on the back of the helmet and on the side of the bike as well. you can get it in many colors so even matching the color of the bike shouldn't be to hard not to mention if you're able to find it the clear reflective vinyl works wonders as well and really won't be seen until night time for non added lighting ideas.

I can recomend the self shading visor that comes on some of the Bell helmets. Had one for years and was riding at 50/50 day and night, even in unlighted areas.

A strip of electrical tape on the top edge of your clear flip up visor can help at sun up sun down with that glare... also always cary clears and sunglasses. And buy both with prescriptions if you wear them...... Yellow works well at night with road glare also.......

I find myself pulling over and letting people pass me when I have to ride at night, because typically I'm having somebody just riding my ass and flipping their highbeams back on because they get pissy when I'm riding as fast as my eyes and headlights will let me.

I wear glasses, so I'm partial to wearing a helmet with a drop-down sun visor. This allows me to avoid having to switch back and forth between my regular prescription specs and a pair of prescription shades. It also allows for fast and easy transition in quickly changing light conditions, such as sudden weather changes or riding into tunnels, parking garages, etc., which can outpace even Transition lenses and leave you at least momentarily blinded.

My old scopion exo 500 had that and it was super convenient but I wish the inner visor was taller than it was. Ended up melting the visor trying to clean it with methylethylketone at work thinking it would be like rubbing alcohol.

I wear a high vis jacket during the day and the night and I have reflective strips on my helmet. Yeah I look dorky but hey I get looks all the time, which is good because it means people see me. Thank God I have not been hit.

I have a transitions lens, I easily get the best of both worlds. They are rather expensive but I value it alot. I also wear prescription glasses so I can't just throw on sunglasses. I love the amazon light strip add to this video..hilarious.

It kills me that most motorcycle accessory stores have rows of black jackets and pants. It literally makes no sense to proactively choose colours which will reduce the chances of you being seen. Note to manufacturers, we want colour and bright options! Make them!

Had a interesting ride last night coming home from work with this subject specifically. I bought a brand new headlight but since I work 12 hours I never got to actually test it until yesterday.. it was storming and pitch black and my new headlight was as dim as the old one. Came out from a turn couldn’t see shit, hit a medium at 45mph and had to dodge the signs on it lol. Turns out the bulb wasn’t the problem the position was it was scattering the light everywhere pulled over a few times to try an get it right but it’s still a bit off. Was literally like having a dollar store flashlight but pointed everywhere except in front of me had like 5 feet max of dim visibility

DEER!!! Have had a lot of buddies hit deer and a few have moved on because of it. I don’t ride at night outside of town any more. It’s like playing Russian roulette here especially during the rut in Georgia my friend.

Cornering visibility! The headlight doesn't turn with the handlebars. The path isn't well lit at night, making it more difficult to see debris and pavement conditions.

The fun begins when you are riding in the afternoon with your prescription glasses which are also darkened and you prolong your trip so when you go back home you have to choose between brightness or sharpness of your vision 😅

I just had some those extra lights under the headlight added , 2 low on the fork and 2 higher. Amazing the confidence they give while riding. Most get them for daytime. But if I get caught out like I seem to do , I know I will see alot better to make it back safe .
