Glad Gyllenhall in Nightcrawler got credit here! I watched the movie randomly and was blown away by how his performance made the movie so eerie and grim while staying interesting
I was disagreeing with heath ledger as number one. Then I rewatched the dark knight and realized that heath kind of changed acting in superhero movies the same way Marlon Brando changed acting overall.
@@dutchvanderlinde346 I would disagree. I would not say the acting in general is just bad, it is at least serviceable most of the time. In general I would say it just really isn't anything all that special though. If you want to see really great acting, you often times find yourself watching a lot of dramas, biopics, period pieces and war films, mainly because actors know those are the kinds of movies that are most likely to win awards. Not to bash those types of films, in fact some of them, like Lincoln, 1917, Darkest Hour and Dunkirk are among some of my favorite films. But it does seem very apparent that actors who win a lot of awards most often do so for specific types of films.
@Lau G Well he was the one that got famous, and without him there will be no De Niro, Pacino, Nicholson, Hoffman and without them there would probably not be any of the great actors of today's generation. Marlon Brando changed acting and revolutionized cinema in general, his instructor might have taught him but that doesn’t mean she didn’t teach any other guys, and who got famous? And it was Brando. Anyway you look at it, Brando, changed acting.
I've come to the chilling realization that this man will forever be overlooked for anything he does. I don't kill myself thinking about it anymore I just don't.
Joaquin phoenix’s portrayal as someone with pseudobulbar disorder (uncontrollable laughter) in joker was some of the best acting of all time. I know he has been credited so much but somehow i still feel like he doesn’t get the praise he deserves. Maybe because of how mainstream the joker film got
I've heard it said that "Heath Ledger did the best Joker in the DC comic world." - "Joaquin Phoenix did the best Joker in the real world." I tend to agree with this statement. Both were fantastic.
@@ajpat9620 ledger was better. It would make more sense to say that phoenix acted better in the master than ledger in dark Knight (tho I liked ledger more)
@@shauryaa5687 Everyone knows that Heath Ledger's performance of the Joker is iconic and legendary. To be frank, Joaquin Phoenix was also great as the Joker and he made a unique interpretation of that movie. Same statement also applies to Jack Nicholson as the Joker. The less being said on Jared Leto's horrible performance of the Joker, the better.
@@ajpat9620 ledgers joker felt much better to me than Phoenix's joker. Yes, Nicholson, ledger and phoenix all portrayed much different kinds of The Joker but in terms of acting I think ledger completely stood when compared to any other joker. The more playful, insane, intelligent joker. The kind of messy joker makeup with the brilliant detailing of the scars on his face actually looked better than Phoenix's clean and immaculate joker/clown makeup. You could feel the tension everytime he comes on the screen and yet you would keep waiting for him to show when he's not on the screen. The fact that despite being the supporting character in the movie, joker took the spotlight from the Batman (this speaks more about Nolan's writing of the joker character in the film in a way tho) is enough to make him the quintessential joker in any Batman film. I think phoenix in the master gave one of the GOAT acting performances just like ledger in Dark Knight and if phoenix has ledger beat in terms of acting, it would because of his role in the master rather than the one in Joker. P.s I don't agree with ledger at no. 1 spot. Him and DDL's positions should be swapped imo but it's not that big a deal. Both deserve to be in the top 2.
I feel like Leo should get an honorable mention for “Catch Me If You Can”, even though I couldn’t stand the character, that was the whole point, to love/hate him which he did astonishingly well.
Daniel Day-Lewis - There Will Be Blood Heath Ledger - The Dark Knight Javier Bardem - No Country For Old Men Christopher Waltz - Inglorious Bastards Leonardo DiCaprio - The Wolf of Wall Street Matthew McCounaghey - Dallas Buyers Club Jake Gyleenhal - Nightcrawler Christian Bale - American Psycho Adrian Brody - The Pianist JK Simmons - Whiplash Frances McDormand - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Sam Rockwell - Three Bilboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Toni Collette - Hereditary The best performances in my opinion.
Yes you can talk about the Ledger's and the Bardem's, but is anyone gonna talk about Andy Serkis as Gollum? Seriously it's still one of the most accurate and spine chilling performances of all time!
I feel so validated that so many people are pissed that Christoph Waltz wasn't on this list. IMHO he should be #1. It invalidates the whole list! Yes, I've been in quarantine too long and am quite emotional. MOJO owes me and apology-LOL!!!
Eoghan Whelan awsome movie I watched it when I was twelve on Hulu which wasn’t a smart decision but I was raised on reservoir dogs and goodfellas. It does sound wrong but I was very mature for twelve . I was twelve 7 years ago !
Glad and surprised to see Toni Colette on this list. She usually doesn’t get the recognition she deserves. Phenomenal performance in Hereditary for sure.
Casey Affleck for Manchester by the sea, Kate Winslet for eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, Marillon Cotillard for La vie en rose and Christoph Waltz for Inglorious Basterds should be here imo. Otherwise the list is fine (though I think Day-Lewis in There will be blood is the best performance in this century)
He should’ve gotten one for Nightcrawler. Jake Gyllenhaal might be my favorite actor simply because he plays characters that I hate so well. He actually makes me feel something more than other actors
Before watching the video I just knew Daniel Day Lewis was going to be on the list ❤️ watching his performance in There Will Be Blood inspired me to pursue acting. His truly an inspiration 😊

Patrick Bateman is more of an INSANE NARC. Completely agree with Nightcrawler, naturally thought of this for best performances in this millenia. I also agree Phoenix does a phenomenal job with his roles. Gangs of New York (2002) had great character development between Leonardo DiCaprio (cuz let's face it:he's awesome!) & Daniel Day Lewis. Nicole Kidman & Colin Firth did an amazing job in Before I go to sleep (2014), and Rami Malek did an outstanding job as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody (2018). Jessica Chastain as Molly Bloom in Molly's Game (2017) should also be on this list. oh...and since we have clowns on this list let's not forget Bill Skarsgård's performance in it chapter 1 (2017). My favorite movie performances would have to be Jude Law as Dickie Greenleaf & Matt Damon as Tom Ripley in The Talented Mr. Ripley (with Gwyneth Paltrow & Cate blanchett supporting), but, sadly, this was released in 1999, so it had to be excluded :/
Hard to just pick 20, but Christoph Waltz’s definitely was a snub. I was expecting to see him in the top 5. Daniel Day Lewis is my number one. Ledger’s Broke Back could have also been a top 5. Same with Joaquin’s The Master. I also would have liked to see Bradley Cooper’s Silver Lining performance at least as an honorable mention. So underrated. Same with Octavia Spencer’s performance in The Help. Adrian Brody in the Pianist. Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk. Nicole Kidman in Dogville. Cate Blanchett in I’m Not There.
Which performance of the last 20 years is your fav?
Zombieland Double Tap
Charlize Theron.

Glad Gyllenhall in Nightcrawler got credit here! I watched the movie randomly and was blown away by how his performance made the movie so eerie and grim while staying interesting
Night crawler by Jake Gyllenhaal was criminally underrated. His character was a genuine psycho
Ellen Burstyn was SOOOOOOO GOOD in Requiem For A Dream!
And SOOOOOOOO robbed of an Oscar!
The fact that she lost the Oscars to Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich is the proof that that award is a joke.
I was disagreeing with heath ledger as number one. Then I rewatched the dark knight and realized that heath kind of changed acting in superhero movies the same way Marlon Brando changed acting overall.
Tbh I disagree. Superhero movie acting is usually bad. Really the only exceptions are Ledger and Phoenix’s Joker, and Jackman’s Wolverine
Marlon Brando didn’t. A woman, his instructor did. I studied it
@Lau G
Well he was the one that got famous, and without him there will be no De Niro, Pacino, Nicholson, Hoffman and without them there would probably not be any of the great actors of today's generation. Marlon Brando changed acting and revolutionized cinema in general, his instructor might have taught him but that doesn’t mean she didn’t teach any other guys, and who got famous? And it was Brando. Anyway you look at it, Brando, changed acting.
Looking at the world through a key hole
I think you putting Rosamund Pike on the list for “Gone Girl” was great
I love that Nupita Nyong’o was mentioned for 12 years a slave, but I feel like her performance in Us should have been included too

I've come to the chilling realization that this man will forever be overlooked for anything he does. I don't kill myself thinking about it anymore I just don't.
Samuel L Jackson as Samuel L Jackson. He's in almost every "big" movie

Heath Ledger's Joker all the way.
Nah, both Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix as both Joker, all the way....
@@ajpat9620 Agree, both are equal and great potrayal in different way. But i talk about role on this list.
I feel like Leo should get an honorable mention for “Catch Me If You Can”, even though I couldn’t stand the character, that was the whole point, to love/hate him which he did astonishingly well.
hated him ? i was rooting for him lol

Thanks for including Toni Collette. But Hugh Jackman in Prisoners is always overlooked
