Dennis is so much fun to watch during this performance. His reaction to a broken stick is priceless, his stage presence rich and his enthusiasm so infectious. I love how he shakes his head like crazy. We miss you, Dennis.
Gotta love Dennis Wilson. One of the few drummers who played open-handed style (non-crossed, left-side ride cymbal). What he lacked in technical proficiency (and perhaps subtlety) he made up for with enthusiasm and sheer propulsive power. At one point he breaks a stick, and literally doesn't miss a beat.
Dennis always got slagged for not being consistently good & Brian regularly used Hal Blaine in the studio. But for energy, enthusiasm & chick appeal, Dennis had no equal. Remember - this was pre Keith Moon.
I hate when people talk about Dennis Wilson's "lack of drumming skills" well this should prove them wrong. He is a great drummer. You don't need to be flashy, just keep the rhythm. (He can do both)
Hal Blaine, the top session drummer of the 1960's and 70's who played on more hits than any other drummer also said that Dennis was an excellent drummer.
I dont know if you like 80s Rock but check out Edge of Seventeen Live 1982 or something like that where she is wearing a White dress. It way better than studio.
The entire show was like that. Steve Bender did a trail burning level of production on it. Broke the norm for music shows. Bender also produced the Elvis Singer (Comeback) Special in 1968.
Wow. there is such a profound difference between the first impression of the beach boys and the underlying reality - and it really comes out in this song for me. It combines the carefree aesthetic of beach boy's surf rock with the haunted underlying musical genius of Brian wilson's composition.
Absolutely LIVE! Carl's amp looks like a clock radio, but his Rickenbacker nevertheless can be heard ringing out above that snare drum Dennis is ferociously beating into submission!
When dennis broke and threw his stick....that was a pivotal defining rock and roll moment. Nobody had ever heard anything like this when they came out. They were a sensation
As much as I like Hal Blaine's drumming on so many of the Beach Boys' studio recordings (including "I Get Around"), Dennis had a style, energy, and excitement to his live playing that is great to watch. RIP, Dennis and Carl.
Dude is one of the, if not, the most prolific pop musician post WWII. Great singing voice, immense musical understanding, visionary ideas, inspiration for Sgt. Pepper's, and the reason pop music could establish itself as a serious art form in the 60's. Is there anything this man can't do?

For all the talk of Brian Wilson being a genius, and I'm sure he is, for me, it's his falsetto singing, on so many of the early and mid 60s Beach Boys songs, that blows me away. Brian was a big, tall guy, playing bass guitar when performing live, at least, and yet he can simultaneously sing this incredible falsetto. I'd like to say Brian Wilson's singing, is as iconic and essential to classic rock history as even that of Robert Plant. And, despite so many commenters here, and in general, being negative about Mike Love, I think his lead singing is outstanding (I think he's in some Vocal Hall of Fame, for his work with The Beach Boys), and I appreciate his maturity and stage presence.
@@roseforyoubabe yeah but he couldn’t write wouldnt it be nice. And The Beach Boys were a groundbreaking group that helped create the California sound, while gibb helped create disco. Disco sucks!

There's a motel across the street from Disneyland with a coffee kiosk (called Kowabunga) that played Beach Boys 24/7. Great live performance! It is such a shame that Brian had the anxiety disorder because he had a great stage presence to go along with his amazing vocals and bass playing. Had he stayed healthy, they might have really given the Beatles a run for their money!
